Dakota Fanning is something else. Beyond talented. You can tell she was wise enough to understand the role she was playing even at such a young age, rather than it being parents feeding her the lines and telling her how to say them. Plus Sean Penn nailed his role as far as I’m concerned it was Oscar worthy. It’s so controversial to go for a role like that you have to do it spot on otherwise it’s offensive, and it was a beautiful movie

she is super underrated in my opinion. one of my go to films is man on fire and I know it's not as serious as this but she killed it in that. such a great actress!

It's interesting back when this movie was made no one batted an eye. They took it for what it was, a movie, great acting and a heartfilled story. Now days if you were to make a movie like this, so many people would say it offended them. Idk, kinda miss these types of movies

I love the way he said it, too.
But, as a preschool teacher who has read Stellaluna dozens of times, I always wondered why they had Lucy have trouble and Sam say, "Keep going" at the END of the story. (I know I'm nitpicking here -- it is still a great scene!)

Sam understood exactly what the teacher was saying. That's the beauty of this movie. Not what Sam knows but what he understands about life and his daughter and just because people don't understand Sam it doesn't make him less. And that's what Lucy understands

He handled the situation (a child defying him) better than a lot of "normal" parents would have. He was firm, but didn't yell. He listened to her concern, understood the problem, and helped allay her fear so that she could continue on.
A lot of "normal" parents would have just lost patience and let it turn into a power struggle.

To be fair, the movie makes it clear that Sam is receiving a significant amount of help from his neighbor Annie, who is far more functional than he is. One of his friends also appears to be fairly high-functioning, aside from his fixation on reciting movie statistics.

Even before i had my daughter....I could never...and i mean NEVER watch this movie all the way through. I STILL cant....especially now. My daughter lost her father to stage 4 pancreatic cancer just a few months before she turned 10yrs old this year. And it still kills me everyday knowing he isnt here for her. She knows she has my dad/her grandpa and her uncles....but it still isnt the same. It haunts me everyday. She is a pretty tough kid......but usually.....that tough exterior is masking something waaaaay more delicate and fragile. I know cause i use to be that way...and so did her father.

The teacher and the premise of this movie are rather silly. Infants require more diligence than do more autonomous 7-year olds - if there was no complaint about him raising her as an infant, and she continues to be well-groomed and progressing mentally, then there wouldn't be any discussion about it.

That's the problem here, that *Lucy* is afraid of change (as all children are!), so she's holding herself back not to overtake her father. Rather than discuss with and reassure Lucy, they jump at the chance to blame Sam. I went through similar where they tried to declare me unfit to practice medicine because I was autistic... late in medical school, then again during one of my job interviews. Autism is very, very poorly understood in my country. Anyway, I'm now considered one of the smartest ER doctors we have and they love sending me to other hospitals to endorse cases because I can easily memorize everything that my colleagues hate because they ask too many questions at the big city hospitals. ^^ Copatients often ask me about stuff trying to get a consultation after I'm done diagnosing and prescribing for the actual patient...
It might sound silly, but ableist people are everywhere and many fear disabled people and act like we'll destroy everything!

I don't understand why Lucy was taken away her father. In scene u can clearly see he cares about his daughter and he didn't want her to stop learning. This movie so sad it's because of this movie I'm scared to have kids myself I and learn disability, ADHD and I have the IQ of a 10 year. I'm scared if I had a kid some one will think in not a good enough mom and take the kid away. I all so have depression and anxiety.

your an awesome mom because my son is 7 right now but I tell him everyday to keep moving forward, and to never stop. when the day comes when he has a child and is a dad I will be there for him no matter what and will tell my future grandkids they are no different then any other child better and smarter. I tell you you can do it don't let anyone tell you anything. your a awesome mom and god bless you

Don't worry i have autism which causes me to be nonverbal sometimes when I'm in times of stress. But I'm higher functioning. Disabilities mean nothing. It is more like a fun challenge to defy the expectations of many. I'm pregnant with my first child and being in school taught me that I am not the R word some folks like to call me sometimes. I am smarter than some in areas that interest me. It makes me good at helping people. Everyone has their quirks but never let your quirks stop you from being who you want to be. As long as the goals are there you can move mountains

As an autistic person, this movie is absolutely not offensive. I'm no fan of Sean Penn as a person, but I'd take this movie over "Music", "Atypical" or "The Good Doctor" every time

In this scene, the two more "normal functioning" adults look as if they think he doesn't understand because he doesn't give a standard response. but if you listen to how he responds even in that parent teacher meeting, he does understand. he understands completely, through the conduit that makes sense to him. and later in the scene with his daughter, his actions confirm that he does in fact understand. so for all their concern about his ability to do higher level thinking and comprehension when it comes to raising a child, he does show he can understand and take appropriate action.

Yeah, he uses The Beatles as his window through which he understands the world, like autistic folks use their special interests. They look at him like, 'Poor, pathetic man, rambling about The Beatles he clearly has no idea what's going on," but he's drawing comparisons: Lucy just has to branch out and try new things, it doesn't mean he or she is wrong, they're just different, and she's ready for new things, but scared it's the wrong thing to do.
