It's devastating to loose our hearing as nurses. I'm struggling to accept this new life. Sshl.....autoimmune...now deaf I don't know sign language. I don't know where to begin.

Thank you for making your YT channel and posting videos on your life as a Deaf nurse! I myself am Deaf and use CI, I always wanted to go into medical field but never did because the technology wasn't there and a lot of people around me thought it impossible for Deaf to do anything in medical field. Thanks to you I can now go to my phlebotomy course with confidence, and then take the next steps into becoming a medical assistant and one day nurse! I am starting out older but better late than never!

I got accepted to a respiratory therapy program and will be starting this Sept but I've been so worried about how I can use the thinklabs one stethoscope in loud/acute environments and watching your videos make me feel more reassured! I do have a conductive hearing loss so I'm stuck with a BTE hearing aid but I do have a streamer that I think I can connect to my hearing aids. I'm glad to see that your hospital is open to hiring people with disabilities! It speaks to their efforts in removing barriers while also committing to safe health care.

Great to hear from your experience. We have a 3 year old deaf boy with cochlear implants. Your descriptions help me a lot to understand his way of hearing.

Thank you so much for your video. An eye opener for those who think cochlear implants is a 100% cure. It is not. You will always need support. I’m sure it makes your life a bit easier.
As for the mask you should prolly encourage clear mask during your shift there are some nice ones out there that don’t fog. Keep pushing and advocating for the deaf cochlear or not.
Your speech is remarkable not sure if you were born deaf or what. Good luck to you! Keep those videos coming!

Hi Nurse Alley, just come across your video. Thrilled that you can use yr Sonnet 2 in ICU. And yr great advice for having breaks, this applies to all CI users plus Hearing loss people. I luv my Medel CI.
Wished I had this device when Nursing. Keep up the good work 👏 Cheers from Aotearoa!

You’re amazing and an inspiration! I’m hard of hearing. I face very similar issues. I’m soon beginning my first semester of Nursing.

Are you able to wear the plastic clear face Shields? I believe that would help so much! I'm sorry this has been difficult for you and others that are hear impaired. I admire the strength you have and believe I and others take advantage of our ability to hear.

when did you lose your hearing? Thanks for the video. Getting a listening/hearing break is a great idea. I think I will try to get that at work. Maybe it will help me be less tired by the end of the day.

Hi Nurse Alley, I am based in the UK currently a student paramedic with bilateral cochlear implants - implanted 2 years ago. I wondered, what happens to your hearing dog while you're on shift I thought they had to be with you 24/7??

This is very interesting. I just learned about the Cochlear Osia and Baha. I have SSD due to an acoustic neuroma I’ve had since 2003. I had Cyberknife surgery in 2012. I’m still a little bit pearly about it all: I’m a musician, and I’m also a caretaker. I’m also retired. Just not sure if I can take a chance.

I had my right ear activated in December and I use a Sonnet 2 and Rondo 3 do you have any advice about how to train the ear ; I listened to this streamed through my implant. Thanks for sharing , I’m an editorial photographer and it’s helping already when for example I have to ask someone for their name as I’m not as distracted by my tinnitus etc

Great to hear you have a Bluetooth remote Mic Nurse Alley. Should make life so much easier. Would you mind if I asked why you only have one cochlear implant?

Hi! That was the recommendation given to my family in 2000- i think MED-EL had not done a lot of pediatric bilateral implants yet. They attempted to implant my left side in 2010, but too much time had passed and the cochlea had ossified too much!

Thanks for sharing this Nurse Alley. I was curious as there seem to be quite a few implantees with monaural implants. I wondered if it was a 'cost' thing. In your case, it wasn't.

Do you know any midwife nurse who is deaf? I’m deaf with 2 cochlear implants so I’m so nervous about admitting into a nursing school for a year. Just wanted to get a good tip from you and others.
