Mick Delahunty and his big band were a fixture on the Irish Ballroom scene for 50 years. Based in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, the band were
part of the generation of sit down orchestras that preceded the showband era ushered in by The Clipper Carlton and others in the later
1950s. The first advert for the band we have found was in July, 1940.
In 1957, the band was resident in the Showboat Ballroom in Youghal, Co. Cork (and would be so for many years)
In the very early 1960s, a small war or words took place across entertainment columns across Ireland as to the quality of the new
upstart showbands against the established orchestras like Maurice Mulcahy and Mick Delahunty. Mick's band were still considered one
of the top outfits in the country touring as a 14-piece orchestra.
I'm pretty sure that at around the 5 min mark I saw Ted flynn and his wife I think Mary was her name.. they lived below the ink bottle out side Pilton.. often had the egg in there house as a child
Is that noel o Dwyer's from Carrick on suir playing trumpet someone tell me please is it him.
Not fair. He wasn't a showband and catered to a, different audience of his own style.
Did'nt think they served alcohol in ballrooms in Mick Dels time.
@@PadraigKeogh-vt9he it was a charity event not a normal event
My honest opinion is Mick Delahunty was very overrated, most show bands were far superior.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I don’t think there would be many to agree with you.
Function back in the 1950s ? Mick Delahuntys band were outstanding for their era . May they all rest in Peace
