I am so proud of Annie Murphy, what a brave woman. I cannot imagine what she went through at the time and over the years. As for the the women in the audience attack her and as for Gay he was less than professional and very rude to her, there’s no words to describe their behaviour. She was stronger than any of them and I’m sure has no regrets and has had and given much love to her son Peter. I am full of admiration for you Annie Murphy. Live your best live💖

Gay apologised, rightly, to Annie after this interview. He admitted that he had lost his professional objectivity during their discussion. She brushed off his apology. Annie told Gay that his brusque manner was mild compared to her treatment by the USA media. Annie told Gay that his antagonistic attitude towards her was indicative of the contemporary Irish people's view of her. Although a scandal at the time, Annie and Eamon's affair, was mild compared to the later revelations of clerical sexual abuse. These horrendous crimes were compounded by the Catholic Church and Irish state's failure to acknowledge and address the harm done.

I was friends with Peter Murphy during my childhood in Simsbury, Connecticut, and also got to know his mother. They were lovely people. When the Eamon Casey scandal broke in 1992, I reconnected with Peter...but then we lost touch. I moved to Los Angeles in 1996, and am sorry I never connected with Annie while she was in Riverside, CA. Looking back, she was a woman with much bravery, and she and Peter were very, very kind to me.

We have to remember that “Bishop” Casey was revered and fooled every single person of a particular persuasion of his innocence. It is now public knowledge that this person abused his own niece from the ages of FIVE, and how many more. Ireland was still a very immature country in regards to abuse by the church at this time. It was only years later that it all came out. God Bless Sinead O’Connor for highlighting it, but see again, destroyed by the public and the press. Gay Byrne was guilty, like the rest of us, of believing the lies and deception of Casey and Cleary, lies, lies and more lies. We were a very different country then, we have grown up a bit more, but still a long way to go….

This interview is mad. I know nobody knew it at the time, but Casey has since been found guilty of molesting at least three women when they were girls. This guy was a predator, and even though Annie had sensationalized her affair, she was in her twenties at the time; bishop Casey completely took advantage of an immature and vulnerable woman. It's him that deserves the rebuke, not her.

What a difficult thing to watch. I remember this when it was aired and had little inkling of just what an inflection point it was on Ireland's trajectory into the future. Annie Murphy took the heat of the first angry pangs of denial for a nation that needed to admit what huge problems it had been cultivating for so long. Like Sinead O' Connor and some other early whistleblowers, at least she's lived long enough to see the country transform unrecognisably in attitudes in a single generation.

It would have broken their hearts to learn of the crimes and cover ups . A tragedy for all who trusted and for all the many decent priests who have been tarnished by association. Never again will the church wield such power over people.

What a sad and pathetic bunch of people in the audience, bleating like sheep as they try to protect
"Their Bishop". Eamonn Casey was a man who succumbed to his emotional feelings in the moment and expressed them in a normal sexual fashion. He had a cosmic connection to Annie Murphy and she to him, the result was their son Peter, who now lives his life on his own cosmic level having inherited good human qualities from both his mother and father. Hopefully Ireland has become more enlightened since this archaic interview!

The women were given dirty births so they would die and so leave the babies to be adopted by well to do families like the Byrnes. Her book relates the infection she had after the birth and the lady who took her in prior to the birth. She had become close to her and came to visit her after the birth.
