I hope you feel better soon Scott! Love your sense of humour as always. Thanks for the time you took to share your research on abuse, because so few of us have time to go down all the rabbit holes. Crazy title - when you started Gunpowder Fiction and Plot, I am guessing you didn't see that in it's future.
I think we agreed about The Mighty Red but for different reasons and that we arrived at or final rating coming to the book from different experiences with Erdrich
Great video as always! Love the title, although being stuck here in the US, I feel like there’s no book good enough to make me forget how horrible Musk is. I did read The Road To the Salt Sea and thought it was okay, but absolutely brutal. I feel like I just wanted something a little bit more from it. Interesting rabbit hole on partner violence. Have you read In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado? It was about her experiences of domestic violence in a queer relationship. In her authors note, she mentions writing the book because she couldn’t find any books on the subject. Ahh Erdrich. Is it that you’ve grown or that she wrote a better book? I personally find her writing hit or miss. I liked The Sentence, but have struggled with some of her other books. Definitely adding The Fisherman to the TBR. I really enjoyed trying Obioma’s writing for the first time this year.
Great video, Scott. Many thanks. I have been so good in 2025 sticking to my book buying ban.....not anymore! The Lions' Den, The Road to the Salt Sea, and Tiananmen Square are now in my Blackwells shopping basket 🛒
Thanks for the video. Glad you are feeling better! Took one book mentioned off my TBR and added 2. For the moment, living in the U.S., I find myself reading books like In Ascension (quick read and enjoying the story) and non-fiction about the deep ocean and deep space. A little bit of escapism to maintain sanity. 😱
Watched your 2023 review of In Ascension. Lol..brutal!:) I don't disagree. I am shocked this made the Booker longlist that year. The prose doesn't stand out and there is basically no character development. The main character has no personality or depth. Science aside (letting this part slide), I am mildly entertained by the plot because I need something mindless and escapist at the moment and it is a VERY easy read. I thought it would be much more existential.Never trust marketing! It's kind of like a low budget sci-fi paperback or film. Will be interesting to see what the Booker judges promote this year;)
Get better soon Scott. Watching your video in a brief period after storm Eowyn. The electric has come on after being off since 0am and it could go off again at any point? Will I get to see all the video?
An interesting selection of books. "Other Names, Other Places" sounds fascinating although I don't intend 'frying' burgers in ice cream any time soon. Hope your eye heals up.
Gahhhhh I HAVE to read Gifted because I'm reading the full Republic of Consciousness longlist. Folks I'm reading with are having some trouble with it too. Darn it. As you said, at least its short!
Hi Scott, I remember you mentioning in one of your videos that you are interested in stories set in Kashmir... There's this new story collection called Loal Kashmir by Mehak Jamal.... Also I'm currently reading My sister's keeper by Jodi Picoult... I like it very much so far... Would like to hear your thoughts on it if you have read it please....
Wish I had seen you video before spending my walks listening to Clean. Something was missing, interesting structure about without much for this reader. Just finished Old God's Time by Sebastian Barry. Talk about a misery read. that one took 1st prize. Mighty Red sounds like one I might pick up.
I’m reading Gifted now and feeling all the same things. I was excited about this because it’s longlisted for The Republic of Consciousness Prize - US and Canada but it is not delivering. There is so much potential here and I think that if this were a 250-300 page book and she elaborated on things, I would be loving it. Big disappointment for me.
Did you read In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, portrayal of domestic abuse in a same sex relationship? Yes it definitely happens. I hope you feel better soon, Scott.
Agree to disagree about Clean. I liked it. We don't normally have such polar reactions to the same book, do we? Weird. Thanks for the sidebar about abuse in the LGTBQ community. It's a topic that needs a louder voice, for sure. Hope you feel better soon.
Suspect Clean is exactly the type of book we might disagree on. South American literary horror/thriller/mystery is really hit and miss for me, it always seems like something I will like, but often it's only pleased other readers.

I'm not sure I even knew who Musk was 5 years ago, but if I did I certainly thought he was a less abrasive character than he is.
Thank you.
Feel better soon Scott. You always find such a great selection of books.📚
Thank you, already much improved from the video.
We needed this video! Thanks! I'd put a smiley face on here, but maybe not given the circumstances. But please keep up the good work!
thank you, you do a great job of book reviewing. I enjoy and benefit from your videos.
Great video and much appreciated! More to add to my TBR.
Thank you. 😊

the mighty red also beautifully describes rural america and transported me
Indeed it does
Love the title.😂

😂
Haha, if you're going to break your book buying ban, at least you broke it with good books.

Haha, I didn't want to tell you what I thought as you were currently reading it and I hoped you might have a different opinion to me.

Good luck! Hope everything is back to normal soon and everybody is okay.

Perfect video title

Thank you for the recommendation, I will look up Loal Kashmir.
I've never read Jodi Pucoult, sorry.

Oh no, I such had high hopes with Gifted :_ I have it on my way in the post.
It has been longlisted for The Republic of Consciousness Prize, so maybe you'll disagree with me.

Exactly! 250-300 pages is what it needs.

The tittle of your video is inane
I honestly can't tell if this comment is a typo or if the silliness of the title has gone over your head.
