Herb Alpert - This Guy's In Love With You - 45 RPM

  • Original A&M Records #929
    45 RPM Vinyl
    Debut 5/18/68
Peaked at #1 for FOUR weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
This record was simply a MONSTER hit from 1968!
(but very few people today are aware of that)
Written by Hal David & Burt Bacharach
Produced by Herb Alpert / Jerry Moss
    Arranged by Burt Bacharach
Published by Blue Seas Music Co., Inc. & Jac Music Co., Inc. (ASCAP)
Listen closely during the breaks at 2:40 and 3:56, and you will hear a horn faintly in the background.
This is caused by "print through" of the original master tape from one layer to the other. It's like hearing the future just seconds before!
This could have been avoided by the original studio engineer had he NOT rewound the tape, and stored it "tails out".
However, the print through actually occurred, and then got transferred over to the master vinyl stamper, and then onto the vinyl, which you hear on the vinyl record. The CD's have had this minor problem edited out, so you don't hear it either on iTunes or on a CD. But it's here on the original vinyl record!

Man I miss the days when vinyl was state of the art, no cell phones, no pagers, and people actually spoke to each other face-to-face. And great music like this was abundant.

Yes i agree its so sad that technology has practically taken over society today. I often wonder what happen to all the furniture type writers, etc? When i look at alot of these old shows from early 1970s , mary tyler moore, bob newhart, etc, wheres all the good stuff that was made so much better in those days, being born 1965 i have seen better quality of life and everything else 🌟

I joined the Navy in 1968. I didn't really have a girlfriend at the time this song was popular, but I did have 'a thing' with and for a girl named Judith Ann Smith. I'll never forget her. You never forget 'your first' I was in boot camp at Great Lakes, Ill. and heard this song at the geedunk(snackbar) and all the memories of her and our time together came flooding back to me. I'll always think of her whenever I hear this song. I wonder where she is now.

The story goes that Herp Albert asked Burt Bacharach if he had any songs lying around which hadn't been recorded. Burt looked through his stuff, found the lyrics and score to this song and say "Here, Herb . . . you might like this one." What kind of person has a song this good just lying around? The answer is; a genius.

Absolutely love this song. Such a tear jerker and Herb Alpert is so good on this song. I read that he got this song because he got into the habit of asking songwriters if they had any songs laying around that no one has done and he went on to say that sometimes when he did that it would turn up a lost gem of a song and that is how he got this beautiful hit. Hooray for Herb Alpert!! Dionne Warwick did a cover of this as the girl's in love with you. She did a lot of Bacharach, David songs.

Herb wanted a song for his April 22, 1968 CBS special, "The Beat of the Brass". Burt gave him this one- and it was staged with scenes of Herb and his wife walking through a forest, along a lake, a meadow, and down a beach, hand in hand. The day after the special, people who saw it wanted a copy. A&M quickly pressed a 45 (in advance of "The Beat of the Brass" album).....and it was #1 that June.

What a great record-on 45RPM,no less!!! And to think that Herb Alpert didn’t want to do it at first-he was (and still is at 80-plus years young at this posting!) an instrumentalist rather than a vocalist-makes it even more special!!! The story goes that his band-The Tijuana Brass-talked him into recording this as a singer-a lotta folks were(and still are!) glad he did just that!!!😎🤗🌟🥇🎼🎤🎺🎸🎹🎻👍👍👏❤️

I remember this song coming on the radio when I was a little girl in the car and my father putting his arm around my mom---- pulling her closer to him and singing it to her---back in the days of cars with a front bench seat. I'd love to know what is on the flip side of this 45.

The Tijuana Brass. Now We’re Talking!😁 On TV they had a video of Herb Alpert singing this song to his first wife while walking her through a wheat field. A TV special. I remember watching it while on board the USS Holland (AS32) ported in Charleston SC. 1968. I hear his trumpet real softly just a couple seconds before each verse. If you listen really close with earphones you can hear it.

A lot of the crap we listen to is not decided by us ,but in fact the money they make off of the next generations willingness to put up with anything ...I like this music, my grandmother listened to this...This and Mancini's

Don't know if he were singing to his trumpet. Anyway, I spent a while (with a Burt Bacharach detour) finding the song was an age 7 goodie.

There was a video recorded in 1968 where he was singing it to his ex-wife while strolling through a wheat field.

This is a good choice not only for the song, but also for the record. I wonder how many records you went through to find one this clean? sounds magnificent!

"Listen closely during the breaks at 2:40 and 3:56, and you will hear a horn faintly in the background.
This is caused by "print through" of the original master tape from one layer to the other. It's like hearing the future just seconds before!" WELL I REMEMBER HEARING 45 RPM RECORDS WHERE YOU HEAR THE SONG START FAINTLY IN THE BACKGROUND BEFORE THE SONG ACCUALLY STARTED

I could hear that through my headphones. I wondered how they did that. I have heard that on other records too.

TAILS OUT!!! dammit, now I remember hearing that when I was at studios and forgot why. Hush by Deep purple has that at the beginning of it as well. YOu hear a ghost of the howl before the howl starts.
