Teach her to explain her mental condition in a way that's socially simplified and doesn't impose a disabled view of herself! When I'd be mid-tic and someone in my class would ask why I just did that, it seemed obvious to just tell them I get these weird urges in my body that tell me to "move" or "shift", then I'd compare it to something more commonly experienced such as an itch or a muscle spasm you can't ignore. Then I'd laugh it off and say "I know it's a bit strange, you get used to it." and laugh it off. I don't remember ever receiving any negative comments in return or further harassment over it. It seemed to help the people around me understand what I was experiencing, which was and always is great to bring awareness to peers, as well as helping me practice understanding my own condition and mental/physical health to communicate the "why's" and "what's" through a tool called Introspection.

Everything I read about tics is WRONG, compared to my situation. I remember a bad tic attack happened at 25 years old. I was able to suppress nearly all tics until I hit my 30's. Tics caused some drama in my youth, but generally went unnoticed. I remember complex vocal tics in my 30's, but I was able to suppress nearly all of these (but they did keep me single). Eventually, I got the foot stomping tics, and more complex tics, and these were even more difficult to control, and sometimes totally uncontrollable, especially if ordered to stop (lol). I have had some relief with propranolol, but, it's an awsome partial solution leaving you want for a better solution. I never had adhd, nor any other problems, in fact, i'm an engineer solving unbelievably complex problems. (I'm working on technology for the electrical grid now). I often get a feeling before the tics happen....like a glass slowly filling up with water, eventually it will overflow, and with the tics, you feel the sensation, but you are not aware of the action until it happens. The more you think or focus on a tic, the worse it is. Sometimes I can "walk" and the visual side effect of the tic is not materialized. (or I've suppressed it). etc. Tics wax and wane, and I can control them, until I cannot. (lol), then I need help from meds. I also have tics, which are wrapped around other movements. I have a tic from stepping on or off the curb, or ariving at the top or bottom of the stairs, etc. Something is ticing, and the movement needs the other "locomotion" movement to trigger it. I can tell it's the tics because of the feeling before/after. I am doing better, now that I"m able to identify my tics, and ticking periods (lol, for lack of a better term).
If anyone wants to discuss meds they are taking, etc, feel free to email me.

I am 25 and I believe I have begun to experience complex vocal tics. I never really noticed that I had any tics during my adolescence, I thought I just had a nervous habit of fidgeting and leg shaking. When I notice that it happens, it gets worse and I begin to panic..

This is really informative. My son, who is 9, just developed a neck tic at the end of the school year. He is on the spectrum, very high functioning. I hope and pray that his tic is transient because I do worry about the social implications. He told me that his neck feels itchy right before the tic. Thankfully his teacher also had tics as a child and was completely aware of what he was experiencing. Geesh why is life so hard for some kids?

I have a very serious case of ADHD and I take the maximum dosage for medication that the company makes and I'm only 13. I'm now realizing that I also am developing tics like gripping my hands or fingers when I am holding something or putting pressure on something when I'm leaning up against it. I also rub my face a lot, and breathe out more forcibly, but I still have an eye blinking tic too. All of these are recurring tics and some occur at the same time. This makes it hard to do schoolwork.

Hi there just asking as I live in a rural town in Tasmania.
I have epilepsy, Mild Cerebral Palsy. I have a lot of pain as I have nerves in the spine touching lightly.
They put my latest condition down to cluster head achs but I have ticks all the time. I find it hard to type and even hold a knife and fork or cup my hand will have a sharp tick where I can smash the keyboard or hit the cup in to the table. Would epilepsy and other symptoms trigger cluster headaches to have these sharp ticks?

I am 23 and I have had tics since I can remember, they aren't as severe as some others but they can become suffocating and painful after a while. Recently I keep coughing and I know I don't have a cold and I've been doing it so much that my ribs feel tender and painful. I also have a habit or tic of clearing my throat a lot for no reasons which also causes me to get sore throats a lot.
I've been thinking about telling my doctor about the tics but I get worried that she wont believe me since my tics change a lot and can be internal such as swallowing a lot or holding my breath or breathing from my nose in a certain pattern. I'm worried she wont think I have tics cause idk if shes ever seen me have a tic that was noticeable while in her presence.

I think Wax and wanes tic but I don't remember if I had it when I was younger because my mind has blocked those years do to a bad life, I'm now 19
"My tics" is eye twitching, saying no, head bobbing harshly that it hurts sometimes, head looking to the left or right, kissing noises, bumping my hand on my head, blowing, eyes widening, tilting head, weird word in general, odd noises, covering mouth and extra (all uncontrolled)
This happens for 2-1 hours or 3 on a bad day then stops for months or weeks, hella tired afterward.

My chin has been twitching for over a year. It’ll twitch randomly or when someone looks at me/I’m nervous. It’s like my chin scrunches but even if I wanted to do it purposefully I wouldn’t be able to even achieve that type of scrunch in my chin. Happens like 15 or 20 times a day. It’s really annoying when someone is looking straight at my face having a convo with me and my chin randomly scrunches up weird.

MrCrazyshots I have the same tic. As a teenager,, my blinking was out of control and even started to develop another one which was turning my wrist when I was very stressed. I'm now 35 and although I still have my blinking tics, I know it's harder for me to try and control it when I'm stressed, tired, anxious, had too much chocolate, things like that. Basically, the better I can handle my stress and nervousness, the more I'm in control. I know I'll have to deal with this for the rest of my life but at least, it's manageable to some extend.

Its mad, I sort of self diagnosed myself with mild tourrettes or something years ago because I unconsciously stretch my face and eyes and scrunch it up again throughout the day (worse when I'm tired or stressed), I never sought a diagnosis as it doesn't deeply effect my life and everyone close to me knows about them and love me anyway. But its nice to dive in and understand more.

so, frequent (q.5-10 sec.) unintentional muscle jerks in an 11yo boy, including a mixture of sharp head jerks, sharp abdominal/chest contractions, and leg jerks (or, if standing, an apparent whole-body jerk) that doesn't occur during sleep or while playing the violin could be considered a tic disorder exacerbation - nothing else - not needing an EEG or neuro consult?

“Unusual after 9 years old” I really really need a neurologist that is not a stupid military doctor. My daughter had a sudden onset of tics at 16. They are not in the face. They are not small movement. They are full body..arms flail..legs kick out. Head therks to the side then jerks up and to the right. Sometime her body spins like she is dancing. Her chest dips and she is forced to blow out the air in her chest. These are rapid..strong and painful af times. They get worse daily. She is exhausted and once lost total strength in the right side of her body. The ER doctor worried it was seizures, but 2 EEGs have turned up “ Something unusual on the same lead, but nothing we can pin point as epilepsy” she had a recent MRI but still no answers..they are trying to push Klonopin, but I’m not convinced this is something to medicate away. I’m telling you there is way more to this. My daughter is forgetting things, unable to understand simple requests and is overly silly. Which is so far from my child I can’t even explain this. The doctors have said stress..but they know nothing about her. This literally came out of no where a month ago and we have been living a nightmare since. ER doctors take it seriously and worry, but all the peds. neurologist at Bethesda just give meds and don’t even call back with test results, or explain what exactly what is wrong with the EEG. Each day gets worse for my child. She was a straight A student who wanted to work for NIH, now she sleeps most of the time and when she is awake can’t even function. We have videos of her tic..wish someone who actually is a good doctor could see her and tell us what is wrong.

mine is not noticable unless you know me and spend a lot of time with me. i flex my arms. heres the interesting part: i have had this tic all my life. my mom said i did it in the craddle as a baby. heres the thing though, its 100% voluntary. my arms look like a body builders even though, i have never lifted a wieght. the best i can discribe it, is i feel an urge to flex my arm muscels like restless leg syndrome. gosh its so embarrasing. do i have torretts?

Please help me I started taking Paxil For my anxiety sickness in the morning and ever since I started taking it, I’ve been having weird things that I do which I believe are ticks and I hope I don’t have Tourette’s . I’m too scared to say anything to people because it’s embarrassing. I used to make faces, and now I just have urges to yell I have urges to snort other strange doings. I know that I’m doing them and I can control him. I just have urges to do it.

Are all tics related to tourettes? As a child my parents and grandparents got so mad at me, because i had this horrid sounding chronic "throat clearing" thing i did, and i didn't realize i was doing it until it was pointed out, or my throat started to physically hurt. This video i'm watching now, is the first time i heard of "throat clearing" particularly in childhood as being a tic. However i do remember my grandma always saying "stop that before you develop a tic" i never knew what that meant and always thought she meant "before it becomes a habit" Until now i never realized that could have been an indicator or the beginning of what i am experiencing now.
anyway after a few years i eventually stopped clearing my throat. but than i started to get violent twitches in my neck and shoulder. That was at age 10. i'm 25 now and i still have the same twitches. I choose not to drive as i feel that could be dangerous, but there have been times where i have accidentally broken stuff or even thrown scalding hot coffee in my own face burning myself. Sometimes it comes out of no where and is embarrassing as people definitely notice...also it can be so sudden and intense it cracks my neck quite loudly and can hurt. I can go days or even weeks without it happening but when it does happen it usually has no warning the first time or two but than comes with the "urge" you describe here, usually in the form of a jolt or electric tingling feeling going up my spine into my head. The more i resist the worse it is when it inevitably happens.
I have seen several Dr's about this, but they have never personally witnessed it, as it is not constant, and has never happened in a Dr office. So it is usually brushed off, and i am just given a weird look...i have other health issues and chronic pain i have been dealing with for many years. The separate pain issues i feel are so devastating that i never put much thought into this "twitch or tic" i experience. Honestly it always seemed like the "least if my worries" however now that i am connecting my childhood symptoms to my adult symptoms...i am wondering if i could have a mild version of tourettes or if tics can be separate from tourettes.. either way i don't know if i should just ignore it, or try to ask another dr. though i have so many other problems they don't take serious i'm worried if i pushed this issue they might just think i'm a hypochondriac.
anyway i never would have thought to even look this up except my twitches or possible "tics" have been so frequent this past week my partner of 5 years asked me what i was doing...turns out he has noticed this twitching for years but never mentioned it. now that it happens more he has asked, and i just said it has always happened. but now i don't know what it all means. I saw someone else do the same twitch i do. i never knew other people had the same problem. does anyone know if this is serious?

I used to have very bad nervous tics, which affected my face & hands. I noticed that it got very bad when I STARTED TO DAYDREAM or any loss of concentration. As I grew older, I noticed these tics would also startup when I got anxiety say with exams or interviews etc
However, in the last few years, these tics have got much less admittedly my time for examinations is over & so is my work interviews.
I have never had any medical treatment for these tics although many people at the time said I should.

We just had to take our 10 year old to the ER because of what they say is a motor tic. She's developed a couple in the last 4 years (ie throat clearing, jaw stretching, neck stretching, etc.) but this one made her actually cause herself some physical harm. She bears down and pushes really hard at her tailbone area, while holding her breath until she's nearly purple in the face. This just started a few days ago. On day 3, she caused a blood vessel to burst in her eyeball. I was terrified and so was she, so we took her in to be assessed. I should probably mention that this new tic seems to have arisen as a sort of substitute to using her finger and checking to see if she completely emptied herself after a bowel movement. She is seeing a more specialized therapist in 4 days, but is there any direction you can offer in the way of which diagnosis we should explore first?

To help reduce or 'put off' tic time episodes... It seems tic time inhibits ones breathing... that is- one is often holding the breath as opposed to fluid-normal automatic breathing. It seems one's anal sphincter muscle is cramped closed. That can be let loosed at will. Then, the muscle group behind the small-lower of the back. And of course a tight constriction of the muscles right above the eyebrows. if the anus is relaxed.... the small of the back will be more easily relaxed... and then the brow muscles. This along with deeeeep belly breathing... the diaphragm ...slow and rythmatic... disallows the tic time and /or lets it go.... until next time. which may be soon or off in time for a spell. It seems a big key to relief is deep, relaxed breathing. Never hastened... not rapid breathing. Was informed years ago that one cannot have an anxiety/panic/pts attack and be breathing at the same time. Indeed, the breath is being held or at least greatly minimized... very shallow.... not a wanted thing to do. Hope this helps.
