Nervous twitch or a tic? How to find out if your child`s nervous habit could be something more

- Does your child have a nervous habit like eye blinking, shoulder shrugging or a verbal tic? These common behaviors often are passing phases, but what if you notice the behavior lasting or getting worse? Akron Children's Hospital recently has been recognized as a 'center for excellence' by the Tourette Association of America largely due to the work of Dr. Katrina Lindsay.
Dr Lindsay helps children and families dealing with tics and Tourette Snydrome and she brought one of her patients, an inspiring young lady, to the Fox 8 studio to share her story.

Man just watching these kind of videos triggers so many of my tics.
@@hibuhemu2311 I started ticking when I was very small but I suddenly stopped, but for some reason Im starting to tic again and idk what to do, my ticking got so much worse :(
@@hyubo7704 same in my tics i swear now to
RaviRossFan 27 EXACTLY the same is happening to me. I keep twitching my neck but it mostly happens when I think about it happening, and it was mostly happening at school today not when I got home
I don’t know what type of tics or if I even have tics at all, like this month and last month whenever I think about tics or get a tiny bit nervous I feel like I shrug my shoulders and my neck like moves or something idk help ;-;

Tourettes is not fun btw
Yeah they embarrassed me today....
We know
No it’s not. No one will ever understand what we go thru but we have to keep pushing thru
Yeah
Fr my neck hurts and i make so weird ass noice which is embarrassing and plus i hit myself when im made and cannot stop or constantly tapping my foot 🧍♀️
my shoulders jerk and shrug and sometimes i bang the table or something in front of me. i even sometimes stomp and everyone around me just looks at me like i’m dumb lmao.
No you are a troll and you people are ignorant!!!!
i’m a troll? lol i just shared my experiences i dont see a problem with that
Yeah, how are they a troll?
I blink my eyes really hard all the time and I can't control it and I have to yank my legs up when I'm laying or tighten my thigh or yank my arms and If I don't I get really uncomfortable and I'm not sure if I have it
Clementine I do that with my eyes too I have to blink hard and repetitive
This was amazing, I am 35 and have Tourette’s and as a child it was hard for me (bullying) even getting older people still look at me funny, but I know my worth.
I’ve started to “tic.” Eye blinking, making high pitched noises every once in a while, and neck movements, but they almost always happen when I’m thinking about Tourette’s or tics. I genuinely can’t tell if I’m doing them on purpose because thats what I’m thinking about or if they’re actual tics. What’s your experience?
@@hibuhemu2311 if you tink you are doing them on purpous or faking it chances are you arent. as someone withsevere ts i thought i was faking it ect but when i got a dignosis i felt alot better
@@hibuhemu2311 and thinking about it or talking about them do make it worse
mine are so embarrassing I've hit people in the face at school because of swinging my arms around and my muscles constantly hurt because of punching them, stretching them, jerking them and moving them into awkward positions compulsively
i've hit myself in the face as a tic in public before omg it's so embarrassing
I’m beyond stressed right now because of school. I’m like twitching and doing this thing where I tilt my head, bring it down, and lift my shoulder. And then sometimes if something really stressful pops up into my mind, I do that and then yell. Very much confused.
Yours are like mine and I sometimes jerk my arms in front of my mom and she’s like “why do you do that??” I even told the doctor about it in front of my mom and they thought it was just bc of my adhd medicine in till I told them even when I was off of it, it still happened. My mom thinks I’m faking them for so random reason too I’m just like- ➖👄➖
@@SingSongSavy Oh ok Thank you!!
Same.
I literally break my neck it hurts so bad

Well done by the reporter
I didn’t know about this illness .... it’s very informative and I wish more people know about it so they don’t treat them badly ....
I feel bad for the girl ... it’s like she’s trying so hard to control it ... I hope anyone with this illness stay strong and be cured one day
Thank you Joel, coming from someone who has tics, i've always wanted it cure and it is a very interesting illness. I recommend watching this 17 minute video called "Girl living with worst ever case of tourettes | 60 Minutes Australia" It will really give you an insight on HOW BAD it can be in certain people. That video will be very informative to you if you're really interested! It's very heartbreaking, i cried a lot when watching it but a great video!
Interesting.
Thank you.

My son has tics and he can't watch anyone else that has tics, he is so afraid he will start to take on someone else's tics. I wonder if anyone else's children feels the same way. It started with my sons eyes, and eye brows and then those stopped and now it's started with him tightening his jaw. I feel so sorry for him.
I’m 16 and sometimes I notice that my face twitches like I have to readjust something like every 20 seconds is this normal
it might be a tic. try and do more research about it! :)
same, 13, but i have a lot of different tics as well such as nose twitching, eye blinking and my head jerks it's really weird and it looks like i have tourettes but i have them for almost two months now so yep
I had a friend and he had tic people bully him bc of that 😕 he had like I basketball tic idk
Wdym basketball tic?
Can tics come out in the blue (slowly came out) because my body keeps twitching on its only and it as been happening for the past 3 hours. And I’ve been getting more twitches too. And now my neck hurts from hitting my neck/head on my shoulder. I had like 20 of them while typing
Do you mind if I ask how old u are or what grade your in? Are u about the same age as the girl in the video? My granddaughter & my nephew are the same age & they both have tics. My nephew has a tic similar to yours where his head bobs sideways down to his shoulder & my grand daughter has facial tics & started wetting the bed at age 7, something she’d never done before. I believe both are vaccine related bc they both started around the same time after getting their shots.
Victory Base, I’m 14, I’ve had them for a month now. I’m also being tested right now to find out why. Also now on medicine for it too
But mine also got more violent, I get episodes everyday that last for half an hour, and during them my whole body shakes, almost like a serizer but it’s not. I’ve been looking more into tics and stuff to help a bit (my parents are too) but I hope your grandchildren are happy and healthy.
And everyone and you are happy and healthy too!!
Out of no where I began to like tilt my head sideways and a noise added onto it. I told my mother (I'm 13) that I think it might be a tic. Here is what she said, "Well, that isnt normal. Just stop it." I didnt know how to respond
I've been dealing with weird head jerks and leg stiffness since I was 19. Anxiety triggers it and it gives me anxiety when it happens. Sometimes it happens a lot but other times I can go weeks or months without it happening. It is so embarrassing and hard to talk about.
oh my god i have this exact same problem, the only thing that triggers it is stress
same school rlly triggers me and i start twitching it’s honestly rlly embarrassing
I've been having these violent body shudders, neck twitching/cracking, yet I have not been diagnosed in a while. I have adhd and ocd, so could this be tics or just me being fuckin weird?
I dont know if I have it or not, like at first, I was dealing with vocal tics, where I felt the need to swear, say gibberish things, make clicking noises with my tongue, or even yell. That was for like a year or so, now I’m dealing more with head twitches, face movements and hand twitches. It doesn’t happen all the time, just randomly happens.
It sounds like you 100% have it. and that isn't a bad thing. it's just another little obstacle, but you can't be sure until you get it clarified. get it checked out by your doctor. You dont want to keep sitting on it for so long and not knowing. I'm glad I didn't. i got a diagnosis and learnt to accept it, whereas if i kept thinking on it, it may have been problematic for me and anything i would do in the future
all the best bud
Why do they sit so far away from him?
Could be one of 3 reasons,
1- Because he's interviewing them and it makes it easier to face him.
2- Because he's black and that's micro aggression.
3- Because he's a man and they might be more comfortable with a bit of distance.
Personally, I think the first one makes the most sense.
@@ozen3348 yeah I agree, It would be weird questioning someone when I’m sitting shoulder to shoulder to them.
Eunoiaa also it’s for camera angles, so they can have a shot with just them or just him
It's called personal space that's all
idk
Bravo beautiful child.
I didn't know that tics were more common than ADHD and Anxiety. It's so crazy to think about or even believe. I have only met 1 person who's had tics and that was my manipulative ex and noticed mine were a whole lot worse. And i've interacted with probably 1000's of people, weather thats online or in real life!
That's really crazy to think that it's more common. wow
Well my mum doesn’t believe me even though she’s seen it and gets annoyed..
my body keeps twitching, and moving, my head sometimes jerks to the side. im not sure if these are the start or some gentle tics but i cant relax my body either, im gonna do some research on it, if anyone has tourettes/tics and this is familiar, please reply (im 13 if that helps)
my best friend does the exact same as that, she's 11. That's why I'm here :)
I always band my desk when I’m nervous
When im alone and I feel safe I usually show more emotion, when I get overly happy/other emotions I sometimes tic. My most concurrent kind of twitching is when I get overly happy I sometimes twitch my head get this small felling that I need to hit my head, and I sometimes start crying from it. Im not crying because im sad, I just start tearing up. Im very confused on what this is, im only a kid.
I’ve been shuddering at random, like super violently and sometimes for no reason??
Tell Dr, might refer you to neuro for scan to check if that is seizures
27 and still have motor tics. Only thing that’s helped lessen them (a little) has been magnesium supplements. NOT magnesium oxide. Look for high absorption chelated magnesium.
can a person have only one or two tics? I only have a neck tic where I throw my head to the back or side and I always get yelled at when I do it
I had the blinking tics badly from age 9-about 19 and it still ticks me off that my parents didn't do anything to help me. I'm 30 now and I feel it sometimes but I've been on medication for the last 8 years that seems to help.
im so sorry you had to deal with that
What kind of medication are you on for your tics
I tic when they are mentioned or if I'm at school but idk if it's because I'm doing it bc I'm thinking about it and I just do it or if it's an actual tic
i developed a winking tic around age 11 and a neck muscle flexing tic maybe around 12 perhaps. my tics went away on their own until my mid to late 20s when my winking tic came back. i have also found myself now randomly cursing and have made up excuses to my wife to explain away why i’m doing it.
My shoulders twitch up and my nose and eyebrows twitch... I doesn’t happen very much but it happens like 50 times a week
What would shivering, neck and shoulder jolts be?
I grunt lile a caveman. At times it doesnt stop until my chest wont react anymore, now my right eye has begun to twitch everyday off and on....

@@ekah1234 your welcome, I will have to look for that.
My newest tic is a neck twitching thing and I have to keep wearing a neck brace because it’s hurting my neck and it keeps my neck from moving too far. I’ve hand a few other tics before. Most of my older ones are still here but nothing has impacted me like this tic
I have adhd and I tic but my mom is like “stop it u can control it”. But one of my tics are my shoulder well go into my neck
im not diagnosed but my mom said it was because of my phone💀 and she held my head and said to control it i was so scared
Why is everyone talking about it like it's the end of the world?.
I have this stress feeling for so long, and I kinda have to do these weird movements, I don't do these kinds of faces, I usually just do this wrinkle face because it's the most satisfying and I always look at the mirror making funny faces, that's sometime the only satisfaction I can have
When i get stressed or feel anxiety whether sitting or standing my legs would shake or bounce my leg or my head would twitch. My eyes would sometimes twitch as well or id just roll or shrug my shoulder
I do that aswell. I know 3/4 of those are anxiety.
@@freyaazz684 thats most likely the reason lol
Sometimes I suddenly jerk my neck(makes it cramp) idk why tho. I get those when I get anxiety
What about a 32 year old with at least 7 other disorders questioning if they also have Tourette’s on some level?
I keep jerking my head to the right side and idk what to do about it..idk if it’s motion tics

She will probably be a great engineer! Us oddballs tend to be the smart ones. We have to be. Survival of the fittest still reigns true in a protected environment. By protective, I mean laws in place. This allows for growth, and it will hopefully be recognized some day. I have two special needs kids, and they are both smart and I teach them and show them so much. At school they are pushed into the next grade "undeserving" really, but they are just different and learn different. I thought our son how to play Monopoly at 6. I faired ok with the cookie cutter mold. Bs degree in business yet working fast food as a manager for so long, but now I've restarted at the bottom as a recruiter. Find what works for you! Learning is great. Make sure it is someone you can learn from or else you're wasting your time. Love life and people. Enjoy what you see. I've learned a lot I my last 35 years. Just want to pass on some positivity!
I don’t have tics or Tourette I’m just twitching all the time and my hand is doing weird movements that I can’t control I wanna know what the fu*k is happening right now
When I’m anxious/stressed like someone yells at me or my anxiety is really bad I twitch my head and sometimes I do it really aggressively and it can hurt a lot and I have to stretch my hands and crack my muscles, neck, fingers and on top of I’ve been diagnosed with adhd and when I’m really just ‘hyper’ I suppose, usually when my medication loses effect at night or I don’t take it, head twitch and I shake my hands and I shake so much all the time ehhhhh
That exact same thing I'd my case! I keep telling them it's something more, but they don't listen, and call me a hypercondriac, and hyper, and tell me that I'm faking it, but I'm not! I'm just so confused!
Vastly more interesting is adult on set tics.
I have the same symptoms that she did before they diagnosed her, like nose scrunching, eyebrow scrunches too, etc... I’m 14 rn idk maybe I’ll grow out of it

I have it to..
so now Doctors are saying this is happening due to tik tok ?
I'm just chillin then i go 'paya'

Before I had motor and ice then now I have vocal tics
Idk how I got here but I do a thing where I feel like a little pain or just get the sudden urge to move something so it looks like a have a tic. Like with blinking or closing my eyes for a while or jerking my arm a bit but I have full control and do not have tourettes that I know of. Sometimes I'm so used to moving I accidentally slap myself instead of itching my face or something
I always twitch my neck and shake my head constantly. I don’t know if it’s tics or not.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one I don't want to self diagnose or anything

Oh God I feel so bad for them....who don't even know they have Tourettes......I know this now.....my father have this.....and I was the one to tell him to not to do this.....oh God I wish I knew this
I keep getting jaw jerks and my neck kinda twitches and my nose idk what’s happening I’m 12
The awkwardness was almost my thirteenth reason....
My goodness. I think the mom needs some therapy of her own and would benefit from reading communication books. The words she chooses are either outright or passively demeaning. No wonder her child is stressed.
She is somewhat egotistical as well.
Also... idk it doesn’t seem to give an example on how to mindfully and compassionately understand tics if you meet a stranger with them.
Bizarre interview.
The mom’s body language is so uptight. It doesn’t mention how stresses at home are the cause of some tics. It doesn’t talk about medications that have sometimes helped tic disorder. There is no mention of yoga, meditation, or mindfulness. I’m so confused.
It's called scratching, not itching! 😑🙄
When you're itchy, you scratch.
That little girl has longer upper arms than the adults next to her

I hope things are better for you. My son has some very fast neck movements and I feel the same. I'm trying to learn so I can help. 😢
What about severe nail biting.
Anxiety?

Also if the tables were turned and a white person told 3 black people they look like they could've came from the same family on live TV it would be an absolute outrage.
