    Why is it that so many of you feel the need to criticize others without knowing what each of these people have endured to reach this level and without knowing them individually?
    How can you feel good by diminishing someone's personal accomplishment?
    Real Karate is a journey to find your self and your character through your work and your own personal efforts. Is for you and you only. Not meant to be a display to please clowns like some of you which, with your nonsense comments are poisoning the fundamentals of the Art for the entire Shotokan community.
    Just the fact that someone's hard work takes that individual to test for DAN is an incredible achievement and shows persistence and strong character which all should admire. OSS!

      +Nicolo Caldera Oh you didn't know? Everybody's on UA-cam's qualified to judge. Especially the ones who are 20-something who've never actually been a test panel judge, they're definitely qualified to. Never mind they nothing about what it means to be in a 50-year-old body, to deal with medical conditions. Never mind that they weren't actually there at the test...just watching these videos is enough for them judge.
      And God forbid they post of video of their own performance, displaying the perfect form they talk about so much...no need for that.

      Nicolo Caldera I fully understand what you are saying about it being a personal journey for each individual but honestly, over the years I have seen the standard of Karateka slip tremendously. I have had the honour to train and learn from both Sensei Enoeda and Sensei Kawasoe and can honestly say that if these people were training with them they would be nowhere near a Dan grading, they don't even have the basics, all they are doing is going through the motions, no Kime, lazy stances and even in the Kata there is very little or no head movement, I'm afraid to say but too many clubs out there these days are more interested in making money and not teaching the true form of Karate.

      Testing can be a strenuous and nerve-wracking experience. Not to mention the fact that, if faced with a real life fight situation, one would probably only be using 30% proper technique in the moment. Everyone's body is different as well. So you aren't going to see "perfect form" unless it's a person demonstrating for show. Karate is not about showing off or impressing anyone. And the ultimate aim of karate is to never use it. Watching this test, I don't even know if it's being performed correctly or not because I've never trained in Shotokan, I train in Shorin-ryu.

    theese days its too easy to pass karate exams... i remember my exams from white belt to yellow and from yellow to orange, and so on until red belt... every single person that was being examed passed right away and only from red belt i started seing some people that didnt pass... i think that the senseis that are evaluating are too soft... i never failed a test neither had a kari, but despite the fact that i always do my best to overcome my dificulties i know that the system is too soft with the kareatekas that are being examined...

    brido1888 and all: Karate is a martial-art of self-expression and self exploration open to everyone, at any level with any physical ability. Yes we should "strive for perfection", but of character and personality above all. The ultimate goal is to find harmony & learn to respect one-another. People that decides to embrace this infinite journey do it for various reasons; Some of you for becoming extraordinary martial warriors with impeccable forms and others to find, reach their own self and challenge their own life obstacles. There is no one-way. Please accept who is different and celebrate those, like you, have embarked on this beautiful sport (because is indeed also a sport). The day that I was awarded my first black belt it meant everything to me since it was the first recognition of many years of hard work. I am sure you had the same experience. However I did not celebrate my physical abilities nor I thought to have gained incredible skills. Rather, I felt a champion because I won against my biggest opponent : me, my limitations and the fact that when I started, I never thought I was going to make it. Isn't it the same for everyone?. So, why don't we celebrate when someone wins? We are a fortunate group, unique and all dedicated to following the same "principles". We are part of this incredible "vision" and through our efforts (everyone) we keep it alive and also make the world a better place.
    Please welcome the new black belts, keep on learning and spread the positive attitude. OSS!

    When I was in my early 20's there was a older guy in my University JKA cub, mid 50's I'd say. While no one made fun of him directly there were snickers between us when he made 3rd Dan. Only now that I had reached that age I see how much more effort he had to put into everything than we did.

      I never saw worse in my dojo in the 80s! These guys are terrible. I flunked my 1st dan test twice because Okazaki sensei said he would not pass me until my kata was on the same level as my basics and ippon kumite, which he said was near 2nd dan level! Even when I passed my 3rd dan test(7 years later) Okazaki sensei still told me my kata sucked!

      It is “storming the fortress” for a reason. This was closer to “kicking a sand castle”. There’s no full body Kime to be had from any of these brown belts.

    • @USGrant-rr2by
      @USGrant-rr2by 4 роки тому

      @Henrick Boot You're correct. I was speaking specifically about the organization of the JKA. Even Sensei Funikoshi's original Shotokan is also a somewhat sportified version of the "real" Okinawan hard styles of Shuri-te and Naha-te that Funikoshi actually practiced before going to mainland Japan. Almost all the early Okinawan masters resolved never to teach "all" the advanced techniques to gaijin(foreigners). They considered even the Japanese to be gaijin. REAL Karate IS NOT a SPORT! It was and is used for self-defense in life and death situations! Funikoshi didn't even believe in free sparring(watered down actual kumite). I probably will not watch it in the Olympics because it will be a game of tag!!

    I trained in the mid 80s to mid 90s. The fact that these guys are even 1st kyu is an indictment on how far the JKA standards have slipped! This is one reason why so many different factions of the JKA have broken away. ISKF, ISKA, SKIF ect. Testing is about money now, not skill. People don't pass tests, people go elsewhere. I say good riddance! All those old Okinawan masters would puke if they saw what their "te" has become....

    I assume few here have their own dojo's. Gradings obviously take into consideration age, physical ability and the fact that they have shown they understand and can perform these katas as they passed prior gradings. Only the panel knows what the focus is this time. Saying they should do this or should do that means you are wanting them to meet your expectations about what you think important. Im sure if the panel were challenged, they would easily justify what they are focusing on. I'm quite certain that a Japanese run JKA grading panel for first dan wouldnt be a walk-through grading. Considering the grading goes for at least half a day, maybe there isnt time to slow katas down to a competition standard. ... just my thoughts.

    a karate student should never criticise another student. you should only criticise yourself. watch yourself on video can be eye opening, do a kata wearing normal clothes and video yourself.
