"Stand up and shout, Shout!, Justice Forever!" - (Road of Resistance)
They could have had an easier, if more limited success, if they had decided to try and cruise on the novelty aspect of the group.
Instead, they recruited some of the best musicians in Japan to back the girls up, as well as great songwriting and choreography.
Of course their producer, Koba, was lucky to spot Suzuka Nakamoto early in her career, and built the BABYMETAL project around her.
She was a member of the JPop trio Karen Girl's when she was 10 years old.
Then at 12, she became a founding member of Sakura Gakuin, the school-themed Idol group that BABYMETAL literally grew out of.
I think you'll be happy at the diverse range of BABYMETAL songs.
Can't think of many groups with a range like theirs.

Thank you for your reaction. I loved it! BABYMETAL performs many of the different Metal subgenres from Ska Metal to Death Metal to Industrial etc, so there is a lot to discover and explore. I am always amazed at how the Kami band (their backing band) can switch so effortlessly between genres. They certainly are some of the most talented musicians around.

  • @tskwerl
    @tskwerl 5 років тому +35

Babymetal's first album was more about combining different genres of music with metal. Their second dove deeper into the sub genres of metal, so you have power metal like this one, progressive metal, thrash metal, a pop metal ballad and even a nu metal type song. Their band is really talented and made up of about 10 musicians who rotate in and out when needed. Sadly, one of their guitarists passed away recently in an accident. Anywho, love to see you guys reacting to so many different bands.

For Babymetal musical diversity you could go for:
    - Musical proficiency - Rondo of Nightmare
    - More japanese - Megitsune
    - Heavier - Sis Anger
    - The most 80s power ballad since Scorpions - No rain no rainbow

    • @MacTaipan

I think that’s a pretty bad description of „No Rain no Rainbow“. Perhaps you meant Power Ballad, but even that is not accurate in my opinion. To me it‘s just simply a ballad.

Babymetal is one of my favorite bands. Listen to any of their songs and you can't go wrong. Su-Metal (lead singer) doesn't get the appreciation she should for such a great voice.
A band for all ages (I'm 55) and their live performances are better than studio. Go with Karate next. It's a great production.

And for some industrial metal #FearFactory Edgecrusher or Dielectric

The good thing about Babymetal is that their songs are very different, they don't have a specific genre, they're all over the place. This one was power metal, which is repetitive by nature, but they have songs for all kinds of metal, even black metal or metalcore. What they have achieved is truly remarkable.

You can never get bored listening to Babymetal. No song is alike. Like others have said, they hit just about every metal sub-genre. Within that, they have songs that are fun and cute as well as songs that are a bit darker. You will hear songs where just the lead singer, Su-Metal, is on stage showing off her beautiful voice. Su's solos are incredible. They also have songs where just Yui and Moa sing. Those are a wonderful combination of adorable and hardcore that will mess with your mind but you will love every bit of it.

You might like #Babymetal - The One, a ballad. And Kel hit the nail on the head with the Manga/anime soundtracks. Babymetal sound is Always big and epic. Babymetal is a total different animal to Band-Maid though. You might also like Karate, Head-bangeeer, Ijime, Dame Zettai (go for live at Sonisphere) or Megitsune. The band playing behind them live is the Kami-band.(God-band) The wear white robes and facepaint (ie Japanese Ghosts). They consist of drums: Hideki Aoyama , bass: Boh, Guitarists: Mikio Fujioka (deceased 2018) and Takayoshi Ohmura. But bandmembers may fluctuate during tours because of many side-projects. Babymetal were formed in 2010 and released two albums: selftitled (2012) and Metal Resistance (2016). Always try to go for live versions for reactions but official video's are fun too. Beware of Copyright strikes!!!

Excellent reaction, as always. You talked about musical predictability and bands which can diversify and change their sound ... you have absolutely nothing to worry about on those fronts with BABYMETAL, they incorporate virtually every metal genre (power, speed, thrash, death, Viking, black, prog and so on) into their songs as well as fusing those with other genres to some degree like ska, reggae, Japanese folk etc. No two of their songs are the same, yet every one of them is the best possible quality because of the incredible talents of first the girls, then they have the best musicians with them in the form of the Kami Band and finally their producer is meticulous to the last tiny detail in the song writing and getting the best people to write/craft them and then everything within each song exactly as he wants it. Best thing since do'nuts? I'd say so - and just as sweet. :-)
Dragonforce and BABYMETAL are great friends and even played this song together at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards in 2015.
If you really want to see just how diverse they can be, I know for a fact that you will love #BABYMETAL Tales of the Destinies and The One live at Tokyo Dome 2016 www.dailymotion.com/video/x5ggoil 19 minutes of magic (and an homage to prog rock bands like Dream Theater). You will have to use 'link & sync' for a reaction - it will be worth it. All the other suggestions you've had are also great - and all are different.

I second Grington300 300. You have to watch the whole 19 minutes. I get sad when I see people react to Tales Of The Destinies or The One individually, they are missing possibly the greatest physical, emotional and spiritual demonstrations of what makes this group so amazing. They are in a league of their own. They invented the genre then buried the blueprints and no one will ever be able to compare to them.

If you really want to go down the Babymetal rabbit hole id suggest watching their videos in chronological order. Then you can see the transformation and growth from just an act with 3 super talented girls with a backing band, to a world wide phenomenon. When the Kami band was put together to perform with those 3 girls, something just clicked. Babymetal became more than just some weird Japanese metal band.....the music Kami band plays and the vocals of the girls ( specifically the lead vocal Suzuka Nakamoto ) crosses language and cultural barriers.

I am one of your latest subscribers and requested BABYMETAL recently in the comments of your BANDMAID - PLAY video.
I was happy to get home today and see this reaction posted and I'll tell you why.
    Firstly, Kel is correct...
BABYMETAL is a genera of its own invention categorized as Kawaii Metal, or "Love or Cute Metal" and has been together since 2010, when the girls were 10 - 12 years old.
Secondly, Rich is right, Sam Totman and Herman Le of DRAGONFORCE arranged the guitars for this song and even recorded the original album tracks...
    BABYMETAL are...
Lead singer - Suzuka Nakamoto as Su-metal
Scream and dance - Moa Kakuchi as Moametal
Scream and dance - Yui Minzuno as Yuimetal (left band due to health issues this year).
The instrumental band backing them is referred to as the "Kami" Band or "the Gods"
They have their own mythos, including their own religion and God, The Fox God, who guides them on their metal journey.
Their symbol is the Kitsune or "fox" represented by the shadow-play fox hand gesture, not to be mistaken for the "Devil's horns" sign.
This band has accomplished some INCREDIBLE things!
    Just a few...
Youngest performers to ever play Budokan.
Sold out Tokyo Dome, two nights, 55,000 people a night and never repeated a song.
First Japanese band to headline Wembley in the UK where they set a record for merchandise sales that I believe still stands today.(?)
They have shared the stage with Rob Halford, performing painkiller and Breaking The Law with him at the 2016 APMAs.
They have Toured with Korn, Stone Sour, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and opened for Lady GaGa.
There is so much more simply enchanting back-story and history to them, and as you go deeper into this amazing act you will come to know how unique and special they actually are!
In the fan community (The One) the saying goes, "first BM song, "WTF?", second BM song, "this is pretty good", third BM song, "OMG, I love this band!"
"The One" (as we call ourselves) call it falling down the "Fox-hole" and you both just skipped at least the whole first step!
    You know why?
    JOY.
You two have it, and Joy is BABYMETAL'S stock and trade.
    ~Peace!
    P.s.
BABYMETAL is not a "one hit wonder" each of their songs is masterful and after 9 years together they have many.

you will see a lot comments for Babymetal mentioning band-maid but me I cant compare the two. if no Babymetal then band-maid would not be relevant. the lead singer at this time was 17 I think so not bad for a little girl in front of a great group of musicians. they started their own genre of metal and some have tried but none come close to Babymetal. been a fan since 2013. you will be correct when you listen to more Babymetal no two songs sound alike. they tackle a bunch of different style metal genres. and some songs are serious and some are just fun and even some are a big fu to the haters. there is a show where Babymetal was on stage with Ron Halford. the drummer from Babymetal is one of the best drummer period. the bassist also is a great bassist.

    Great reaction, guys!
If you're willing to go down the proverbial rabbit hole, there's a world of wonders waiting for you, full of crazy metal and totally bonkers music.... ;-) You wondered what else they can do, whatever sounds they produce? LOL! Well, you're in for a treat then: no two songs are the same by them. Although it always has a solid Metal base, their songs lean towards different Metal genres and are (often, this one less so) infused with other music like, (first and foremost) J-pop, EDM, Dubstep, Ska, Reggae, Ragtime, traditional Japanese music, etc. And every song doesn't just 'copy' a (Metal) genre but is an ode to it, taking it to a next level. Like you said, Rich: "on steroids". ;-) They did a full on Prog-Metal song, "Tales of the Destinies", which got a compliment from John Petrucci from Dream Theater. And, as others have mentioned already, you got it on the nose, Rich: the guitar arrangement for this song was done in collaboration with Sam Totman and Herman Lee from Dragonforce.
What you'll also learn when you'll watch more of them is, that their age will change quite a bit because, although they are quite young, they've been around for almost ten years. The singer, Suzuka "SU-METAL" Nakamoto, is 21 currently. Let that sink in....! ;-)
Looking forward to your next BABYMETAL reaction! Some songs that I think you'll definitely like are "Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischief of the Metal Gods intro)" (ua-cam.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/v-deo.html) or "Syncopation" (www.dailymotion.com/video/x6h1uaj) or "Amore" (www.dailymotion.com/video/x5aducg).
I admire your attempts to reach out to "the artists" about copyright claims, however, I'm afraid that that won't do you any good in this case. For one, the Japanese music industry is known to crack down on use of any material. (As you've already found out, apparently.) Secondly, there's a big entertainment company, Amuse Inc., behind BABYMETAL, who are notoriously immovable when it comes to copyright issues. And it's not like you'll be able to send an e-mail or tweet to any of the ladies or the band members either. But, you could try of course. BABYMETAL is a thing so, stranger things have happened. :-P Your best bet would be through "5B", the company that does their PR and promotion in the US. But, I'm afraid that the will tell you the same that I did.

I have to admit, I was put off by the name at first. When I finally gave in, I watched Sonisphere 2014, and I was hooked ! Managed to see them in Chicago in May 2015, and again in Chicago in May of 2016. Last time I saw them was in Kansas City in 2018. It is a different dynamic now, but still enjoyable. 2019 should be interesting ! #Babymetal "Rondo of Nightmare" , #Babymetal "Headbanger" Live at Budokan Black Night, # Babymetal "Megitsune" . Enjoy !

I really hope you'll enjoy your Babymetal journey.

  • @autohmae
    @autohmae 5 років тому +8

Thanks for reacting ! I had seen some of your other band reactions (I'm also a fan of Nightwish/Floor and Pink Floyd for example), very good.
I think most would agree Band-Maid and Babymetal are not in the same genre. They both have girls/ladies in the band and they are from Japan. Band-Maid is more rock leaning to metal. Babymetal basically was able to create a new genre, a genre of their own. I've seen a bunch of names: Kawaii metal or Kawaii core (Kawaii being Japanese for cute as in adorable).
Actually the first time when they were going to perform this song (which was in the UK) it was at a venue which had a lot of reverb and they actually cut an other guitar section of the song and if I remember correctly that is why they ended up with the long Wow, wow, wow section. And this obviously was an extra long version for the closing song of the show. Obviously as everyone had already mentioned the song was created in a collaboration with the guitarists of DragonForce.
Rockstar girls, yep, that's what they are. :-) It's very usual, but if nobody is doing it yet, doesn't mean it shouldn't happen !
As you mentioned, they are fun, they put a smile on people's faces. A lot of dark metal exists, but Babymetal is sometimes called happy-metal. A lot of the lyrics are about positive things. Or at least fighting for positive things.
For many people Babymetal came before they learned about Band-Maid, because as you can imagine Babymetal got a lot of attention on the metal news websites. This put more attention on Japanese bands and maybe especially bands with girls/ladies from Japan. This brought Band-Maid to the fore front in the metal scene in the west.
As someone that has been following the Japanese bands, reactions and copyright issues, I can tell you reaching out is very likely to get nowhere. I would go a step further, I would take even more precautions if I were you. I see some already suggested link&sync. Basically let people open a link in a separate tab and do a countdown to start the video at the same time. It's even possibly to make a link to a webpage with has both videos playing at the same time, started at the right moment (the webpage already exists, we can even help make the link).
Anyway... welcome on your journey through the land of Babymetal. :-)

I'm a huge Dream Theater fan and I almost only listen to progressive rock and metal. Checking out Babymetal for the first time I didn't think I'd end up liking them but they kind of blew me away with their unique blend. The musicianship is pretty damn good but the two things that stand out to me the most is quite a lot of the songwriting and perhaps most of all Suzuka's voice ("Su-metal", the lead singer). Sure, there are many songs of theirs that don't do anything for me, but I was surprised to find so many that I genuinely like.
For some of their songs there are really good live recordings available here on UA-cam. One that you are likely to get a lot of suggestions for is the Budokan recording of "Rondo of Nightmare". That one is good. Another one of my favorite live recordings is their "Akatsuki" (the "Black Night" recording from Budokan). That one has powermetal tendencies as well. If you'd like to check out a power ballad of theirs, I'd recommend the live version of "No Rain, No Rainbow" available on their official channel. And while there you might as well go for their official music videos for "Megitsune" and "Karate". Some might disagree with me but I prefer those over any live recordings and these two songs are a bit different compared to those already mentioned. Megitsune incorporates some very classical Japanese harmonies that blends really well with the metal and Karate has a pretty heavy sound, at least for them. (Think "djent", but of course still featuring their catchy vocals).
There are other good songs as well. As a Dream Theater fan it's hard not to enjoy "Tales of the Destinies" as it is so very clearly inspired by them (and not just "a band like them"). It's easily one of my favorites of theirs. There's no good live recording available on UA-cam though. You'd have to use other streaming services to find it. I think it's perfectly fine to just listen to the studio recording for this though, the way you do most of your reactions. Another song worth checking out that way is "Amore". Okay, I'll stop bombarding you with song recommendations now. ;)

Thanks for choosing to react to BABYMETAL, they're amazing! As someone who is new to the group, I thought I'd give you and your followers a little background on them.
BABYMETAL is a Japanese Kawaii Metal group consisting of (for the most part) SU-METAL on lead vocals, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL on backing vocals/dancing, or "SCREAM AND DANCE" as they like to call it. I say 'for the most part' as Yui & Moa have a few songs that they do as duets without Su and Su has a few songs she does as solos whilst Yui & Moa take a well deserved break.
They were formed in 2010 as part of the idol goup Sakura Gakuin, before touring on their own in 2011 and have gone from strength to strength.
They started singing to backing tracks with actors in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments (known as BABYBONES) but soon incorporated the Kami Band into their concerts, bringing them in full time at the end of 2013. The Kami Band consists of some of Japan's premier musicians on rotation based on availability. The most popular configuration consisting of Takayoshi Ohmura and Mikio Fujioka on guitar with Leda Cygnus as stand-in, BOH on bass and Aoyama Hideki on drums. These are the people you will see most often in videos. Since the untimely passing of Mikio at the end of 2017 they have enlisted the talents of Isao Fujita on guitar.
Below is a list of some of their best performances that I hope you will consider for future reactions. Should you decide to do more BABYMETAL reactions in the future, you should be aware that UA-cam will block almost all videos that incorporate audio. The best way round this is to mute the video and provide a link that we can open in a new window and sync with yours. Just give us a countdown before you start playing it. The BABYMETAL fandom is very used to this way of doing things.

The backing band for the girls is basically a Japanese all-star metal band know as the Kami Band. The three girls all come from the Japanese idol industry, so they are trained singers, dancers and actors. They are extremely professional to be so young. Their mixture of Jpop and different genres of metal make for a very unique sound and style. They are alone in their genre of "cute metal." Yes, they are a manufactured groups.....and a darn good one at that, so comparisons to an organic group like Band Maid do not apply. I love both equally because each one's music is distinctly theirs and always has great melody. For many, BabyMetal is an acquired taste because they are everything normal rock/metal is not...which also makes them great! Let's be honest, this style of music has been on life support for decades now.....it is bands like Baby Metal and Band Maid that are introducing something new and exciting into the genre.

Hah finally you guys are delving into the rabbit hole which is BABYMETAL. Road of Resistance is the easiest one to get into from a metalhead perspective, it cuts through easily and is not too diluted into the JPOP aspect of this band. But I highly advise to take a step back and hold your breath; not one song from this band sounds the same. You may find this one sounding like a DragonForce, that is because they were consulted for writing this track (only). The other tracks you may hear, are all of totally different nature. That's what may be the box of surprise that awaits you guys. If you want to take it easy and not go too hard on yourselves with this band, I'd advise to (for now) steer clear from the more uncommon BABYMETAL for the time being and maybe continue with the pure metal tracks, such as "ijime, dame, zettai", or "Rondo of Nightmare". If you feel more adventurous; "Karate", "Gimme Chocolate!" or "Awadana Fever". If you really love the band, then any track won't matter as you'll potentially be captivated and in a passionate quest while attracted by the cuteness. If you get into 2018 material, prepare to be slightly disappointed as one of the 3 main girls have left (which every BABYMETAL fan is mourning)....

That's what I was waiting for! Great reaction!
I love Band-Maid and many other bands, but watching the first reactions to Babymetal is kind of priceless. You will be happy, as they hit many sub-genres of metal in their songs. I suggest #RondoOfNightmare as the next song. It's a darker song, Suzuka's solo with a great intro showing the skills of the Kami Band: ua-cam.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/v-deo.html . That performance always give me chills, she puts so much emotion on her vocals... It's amazing!

Here's what they do: prog metal, power metal, symphonic metal, Viking metal, ska metal, thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, black metal....and more I don't know the names of and they nail it every time!
The drummer is Hideki Aoyama. He is part machine! The bass player (6 string) is BOH, and two guitar players, Takayoshi Ohmura (played the pink guitar, he played with Marty Friedman's band) and Leda Cygnus was the other guitar player. They all wear Corpse Paint. This video doesn't really highlight them too much. The white robes are traditional Japanese burial gowns. They are called The Kami Band. That means "God Band". They are the gods of their instruments, and are "manifested" on stage by the Fox God to play for Babymetal as needed. I'm not making this up, it's all part of the Legendarium.
As you go along, you will see some videos with people in skeleton costumes playing behind them. That is "Babybones" and they were not a real band, but actors miming that they played while the girls sang live to a backing track. When they started they were on an almost non-existent budget. Eventually, the Kami Band was put together specifically for Babymetal, comprising some of the best musicians in Japan, and most would agree the world. They started by playing the encores, and then eventually took over completely and became the band. You can't have Babymetal without the Kami Band. They are as vital a part of Babymetal as the girls.
You started something wonderful, but remember, you can't put the Genie back in the bottle once it is out. Prepare for an amazing journey!

@@autohmae You are right, I didn't mention him because he wasn't in this performance. I didn't want to overload them with too much information out of the gate, but maybe I should have. I noticed other people mentioned about the different musicians, I guess I figured someone else had mentioned it. I always feel self conscious if I go on a long essay, so I kept this one short.

@@richardtownsend9107 Don't worry. If you can do a Wall of Death at a Babymetal concert, you can do a Wall of Text in a UA-cam comment. :-)
And the other way around too by the way.

Babymetal are a ton of fun. Its as just a shame so many metal heads hate them. Their loss.

I like both bands (BABYMETAL and Band Maid), but i do like the variety of BABYMETAL songs better. In regards to Rush which is my favorite band, I usually do my own compilation playlists that span all their genre's which helps with the fatigue you mentioned.

3:22 Your face, Rich!!!!! :O So much energy! These girls were thrown to the wolves on their first overseas gig.... and pretty much took over the pack! 50K fans of other bands learned to respect the name "Babymetal" that day! Thanks, laughing buddha! Good reaction, Kel and Rich! Akatsuki is another Babymetal song you could react to..

Try out “Tales of the Destinies” ... it’s sort of experimental, sounding like an homage to Dream Theater; only performed once (Tokyo Dome where they sold out two nights consecutively, 55,000 each night) ...
