    This is awesome, that's the kind of career I want to have. I am an undergraduate economics student and the main areas I think of working are: working for the government and public organizations (doing research, budget planning, etc), becoming a professor and becoming a researcher.

    Thank you again!

    Thanks for the video, very insightful. I wonder if, sometime in the future, you could make a short video detailing some of your reading techniques for when you a) have enough time to carefully go through a paper and understand it deeply and b) for when you are quite short on time or have to read several papers.

    Hey Quentin! Lovely video. Could you cover the depth of STATA knowledge is required to excel as an economic researcher? Maybe if possible you could show a sample do-file from any past paper/research you did. As an aspiring researcher, I want to solidify my knowledge from the ground up, which I think starts with the initial data cleaning.

    • @the_causal_mindset
      @the_causal_mindset  3 роки тому

      Well, I can send you one ofc. contact me on linkedIn and we'll have a chat. data cleaning is the first step and I'm still doing that a significant amout of time. But then, you find cool way of doing that faster with fuzzy merging for example, simple loops and tricks. The most important thing is to get better in econometrics, then you just google "how to" and find out. But with the years you also expand your toolbox.
      I would say, there are three main axis you can learn.
      1. Tools: I'm using now tons of spatial tool (geonear, geoinpoly, geodist), or network stuff (nwcommands), also string similarity (matchit), spmap for cool maps or the very cool heatplot and hexplot etc.
      2. Regressions: I'm a big fan of reghdfe, it's super efficient and doing tons of stuff (IV, FE, etc.). But you can learn tons of other models: logit, probit, zero inflated negative binomial, two stage heckman, hazard model, etc.
      3. Better and more efficient coding:
      Then you also learn tricks to go faster (cool loops and tricks), and automate more things. My tables are now completely created in stata and exported in Latex with anotations, with rows for fixed effects, sample size, mean value of the outcome etc. I've also a super cool line of code at the begining of the dofile which detect on which computer I have so I don't have to change the path (and for my co-author as well, BOOM).
      Well, I love STATA, I could go on :)

    • @zaeemalehsaan559
      @zaeemalehsaan559 3 роки тому

      Thank you so much for the detailed reply. Since I still feel I am a beginner with STATA, a lot of the things you said seem foreign to me. I will definitely reach out to you to know and learn more. Thank you so much again! Keep up the great work. I love the flow of your videos. Super clean.

    • @the_causal_mindset
      @the_causal_mindset  3 роки тому

      @@zaeemalehsaan559 Ah sorry, didn't know your knowledge. FE=fixed effects, IV=Instrumental variable, logit/probit are models with 0/1 variable as the outcome, hazard model are also called survival models (cox model) and help to predict what "kills" somthing faster (could be humans but also what put an end to poverty or conflict), Two stage heckman models are useful when you have first a stage of selection (some people in some out) and then a stage with people in and you want to evalute the intensive margins (for example if you want to evalute the wage gap between blacks and non blacks in the US, you can't just compare the wage of those working because many will not even be able to work, so you would suffer from sample bias and to correct this you use a heckman model), zero inflated negative binomial is a model when the outcome has a large mass of zero and then it's a discrete variable (for example number of children or number of houses).

      @@the_causal_mindset I find really interesting the item 3. I am used to work with paths in a more generic way, something like:
      global path "c:\user\file location"
      and then I'm able to go back and forth through the code by just simply invoking $path.
      Now I'm curious about this code you developed to detect the computer and/or the path. Would you explain a little bit more about it?

    Dr. Gallea, I am a 3rd year undergraduate economics student, and I’m not sure if I want to pursue a Masters in applied Economics, or go for the PhD. Do you have any insight? I’m from the United States and I am more interested in working for the government as an economist/analyst rather than working in academia. Do you think a Masters would be more beneficial than a PhD? I love your content! Keep it up!

In many top position you ll need a phd now. Check my discussion with a phd candidate who worked in the UN and WB, we talked about the usefulness of a PhD: ua-cam.com/video/57l0XM4jfI0/v-deo.html

    • @the_causal_mindset
      @the_causal_mindset  3 роки тому

      Like everyone, coding is 90% debugging! I ve been coding since I was 10 years. I started with C++, then html/javascript/sql/php, and now for research R/STATA/Python.
      How muxh is needed? Hard to say. It depends. Everyone has a different set of skills. I like programming and hence I do that a looot. Maybe 50% of the time on average.
      Coding is necessary today and even central in most technical jobs. And obviously in research. But many learned a lot during the phd and had only basic knowledge before.
      Hope this helps! Cheers!

    Hey this was a great video. Im studying a Bachelor in Computer Science Engineering, but now i would like to work in the Economics and maybe Finance field. Would it be advisable for me to start over with my studies or could i transition into economics with som extra classes?

    • @the_causal_mindset
      @the_causal_mindset  2 роки тому

      I know a few people who transitioned and got a strong profile due to their knowledge in CS! We are using more and more GIS, coding, scraping, R, Python in econ. As this is growing, the more senior night have little knowledge on those. Hence you have something valuable to offer. It would be a bit brave from my position to say if you can or can't. But sure it a feasible, and it might even be a strength. Depending on your current knowledge, and the master you want to apply to, you might be able to go for a master in finance or econ directly. There are other mixed masters for example one where I teach at EPFL: SMT (master in sustainability management and technology)

So the first step is to reach a bachelor program in economy. And jointly with this first step the question is how far can you go? Will you stay in india, in your area or travel in another country?
