That's only part of the point, I think. It's also that through the wide eyes of children, even the crudest of old Hollywood special effects have magic. Jaded adults, coddled by CGI, can't see the wonder that's right in front of them. A child can. Movies often seek the child in us, particularly fantasy movies. I am a middle-aged, analog man in a breathless digital world. I get more out of the exhaustive, intimate, handmade sorcery of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen than I do out of all the motion-capture precision that clogs movie screens since the 1990s. Ich bin ein skeleton!
This is just an amazing homage to all the old film techniques. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how much effort and work goes into these media. To this day the modern Alien franchise can never really beat the suits and animatronics they used in the originals. It's just not as scary, not as much heart. Same goes for Jurassic park. The original puppet they had to dry out every few minutes in the rain scene near the beginning has never been matched in quality in my opinion. Then there's all the old films such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal that are such gems. Even the new star wars series 'The Mandalorian' has recognised this and the child they use is a puppet. It's just so much more real. This is beautiful, and I honestly thought it was gonna have a bad ending, but the hope he has at the end just made me smile. Even if the critics don't find him scary for the movie, he's a terrifying monster anyway. Scare on little bone dude.
The Mandalorian would have used c.g.i. But Werner Herzog, who is one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, by the way, attacked the producers, exactly because people nowadays use c.g.i to replace animatronics.. and, lo, and behold. Baby Yoda became a puppet.
Just saying, I heard the rebooted Dark Crystal series on Netflix are a series of new gems themselves, as a perfect fusion of old & new. I myself hasn't got the means to watch the series but they look so awesome in the previews.

Congrats, I'm crying. I've dedicated my life to practical effects- and now like so many in the entertainment industry I'm stuck without work during the pandemic. This hit real close to home. I love it.
Stick with it mate! There are those of us out there that adore practical effects. I don't go to the movies anymore, like, at all. But the second a Laika studios film is released I'm there and the practical effects are the biggest draw for me (though most of their stories are fantastic too).
@@shreyandatta1910 the stop motion animations were out-dated and raplaced by the 3D CG.The skelecton represents the conventional cartoon artists or old film workers, the passing of time made them unemployed, they can just wait to be abandoned by the society.
I like the scene where the skeleton and the other old school visual effect characters burn the studio and the skeleton guy melts and then wakes up from his revenge fantasy, its a metaphor that many peolpe hate to hear; Revenge might be satisfactory...but it also destroys yourself.
Revange is good, there is some people like us that follow Satan and for us that's okay, we don't agree on the fact that revenge is a bad thing but I get your point.
I mean, I twatted someone with a rock for revenge and I'm still intact. I don't hate hearing it, but it's not always right. Sure, most people regret doing something and not "being the bigger person", but I don't regret it. The only thing I wish is that the fucker died, as I was 9 at the time, meaning I couldn't have been prosecuted. Fucker somehow survived a caved in skull.
Um, I think it's a scene for comic effect, illustrative of the skeleton's frustration and anger, not a scoldy moral lesson on the wages of revenge. If it served to give you a thumbnail education in basic ethics, fine. For me, it simply and delightfully "fleshes out" the skeleton, which is the goal of the movie.
I can't just stop thinking that the little girl at the end of the movie, after realising that this guy is the Skeleton Monster, decided to cheer up his day and act scared.
That's a boy, and I think he was actually scared. He assumed the skeleton was an effect, and just that. He didn't think it was an *actual* skeleton. That was genuine fear, not just 'oh I'll make this guy feel better' thing. He had no idea what the skeleton was going through.
This 12 min short elicited more emotion and more kinds of emotion than most of anything else I've scene recently. What a great tribute to the great practical effects of days passed.
Or moved pretty well for having no muscles? I think in this universe the characters can do whatever they did in their original movies. So if in the movie they added a sound effect to make him roar, he can roar.
Stop motion's grave was sealed with cement the day the lago movie came out. It's become nothing more than a novelty, which is pretty sad considering the amount of creativity that comes out of those who still use it, but still the fact that we have a movie where nobody knew the difference kinda makes it obsolete for anything other than to show off your skills.
@@chrisatlatenite If you blokes do get funded to make a larger story, I do dearly hope you'll (do your best to anyway) give the audience something important. Inspire them, show them what matters as a human. Stop motion and vfx take enormous time and talent, please make yours count.

The script is hilarious at 2:56. "He blows chunks all over TRICA who plummets into the ocean." TRICIA: "I can't swim". GRIFFITH: "Here, take this pool noodle." LOL
What i like more of this is that this is why we should cherish older animation methods cus they're just unique and make filming projects (though difficult at times)become more recognized and staples for there time
Love watching the evolution of your style and humor ever since the Doomday Arcade days. This has a lot of heart, despite the clear lack of one in the main character. :)
I like how most of the "real" things the Skeleton King interacts with have motion blur, yet he does not have it, being a stop motion figure. Except the scenes, where the "figure" was not animated frame by frame, but in a continuous manner, like at 5:17. The amount of detail put into this short film is really breathtaking. I did enjoy this a lot. Maybe some day we will see another movie completely made without any digital processing involved. I know, the cost would be too big to justify. But, if this would have been done without digital technique, it would be not that crisp and precise. I just checked the behind the scenes and a lot of CGI was involved. Those pioneers who did this in the 1960s were truly masters of their profession.
When he roar'd and the talent agents didn't even bother to look at him, i died a little inside. Way to make me feel something I haven't felt in a AAA-movie or TV show in decades.

I think this video was symbolic for the career of Ralph Macchio who was famous for his Karate Kid role. Then his career took a downturn he never truly recovered from. Granted, the first Karate Kid was great.... but all those sequels were unnecessary money grabs and he paid the price.
Anod to Ray Harryhausen here, and all the practical effects artists ,that made [and still make] such memorable films ,like this one ,real characters ,yet not one word spoken, loved it.
Usually, a school will force you to pour hours into something ten minutes long, and you end up hating the original product due to whatever laborous work you have associated with it. However, despite my school pushing this down my throat, this truly is something special. It’s a small, wordless, but beautiful story that deserves all of the praise it gets. I legitimately don’t understand why this has any dislikes.
It's because 99% of the world nowadays is stuck on the idea that if it isn't digital, realistic in every way, and 'modern', it's useless, dated, and obsolete. I mean, how many people watch the old "Jason and the Argonauts", "Sinbad", or any other stop-motion movie, let alone black and white movies (other than "A Christmas Carol")? What's worse, is that, as with the 'Rebooted" script in this film, the prevailing thought process is to take a classic, use all the new and modern techniques possible, rework the original script with modern ideas and ideals, and current ways of looking at everything, and produce a worthless piece of crap to put on the screen and pass it off as a modern take on an original (cue full-screen shot of the poster for the 'Clash of the Titans' remake). I have YET to see a modern remake come out that matches the originals in quality, despite their age - INCLUDING the prequils/ sequels to the original movies. There have been a few sequels that improve a few things by explanations given or the like, but by in large, almost none have been better.
I was showing my appreciation for this particular piece. If you don’t like this work, or me as an extension, for liking it, then that’s okay. But yes, I’m acknowledging that other movies exist. Didn’t think I would have to say that but here are we.
I have to say that it's great Phil and Mid-90s-Liquid-Metal-Man are still getting jobs. Two very underutilized actors if you ask me, which you most expressly did not.
I know this has a lot of love already, but what an inspiration. Don't let the old ways die too, use everything we know to our advantage and make magic like this film. I'd actually like to see this as a full film. Such a good movie!
I really love how they made this, I think the small dragon is one of my favourite characters because he's made out of paint, ink and acetate, just like the regular cel-animation which was then replaced with graphics-tablet animation.

Nothing beats practical effects. Too much of animation takes away the element of magic that was.
I'd throw you some work, but...

Jason and the Argonauts is one of my top favorite films, have seen it easily over 100 times and it never gets old. Love the reference.
I can give credit to the Skeleton for being courageous. Despite having no guts.
I like the scene where the skeleton and the other old school visual effect characters burn the studio and the skeleton guy melts and then wakes up from his revenge fantasy, its a metaphor that many peolpe hate to hear; Revenge might be satisfactory...but it also destroys yourself.
True, I think also the idea was that he realized he's essentially (made of ) the same thing after all
Revange is good, there is some people like us that follow Satan and for us that's okay, we don't agree on the fact that revenge is a bad thing but I get your point.
@@paulitikox I don't see much use for revenge other than getting myself locked up in jail, what is your view on revenge?
Um, I think it's a scene for comic effect, illustrative of the skeleton's frustration and anger, not a scoldy moral lesson on the wages of revenge. If it served to give you a thumbnail education in basic ethics, fine. For me, it simply and delightfully "fleshes out" the skeleton, which is the goal of the movie.
Shows how difficult stop-motion was for the early pioneers.
yeah now you can just do it on your phone (but I mean it still takes skill and patience)

Honestly, I'm surprised the Black Lagoon suit is still out of work. Taking over someone's body against their will like that is absolutely terrifying.
I can't just stop thinking that the little girl at the end of the movie, after realising that this guy is the Skeleton Monster, decided to cheer up his day and act scared.
That's a guy, man.
That's a boy, and I think he was actually scared. He assumed the skeleton was an effect, and just that. He didn't think it was an *actual* skeleton. That was genuine fear, not just 'oh I'll make this guy feel better' thing. He had no idea what the skeleton was going through.
