1500 players are like a combination of a GM and drunk 900. Sometimes they find absolute beautiful combinations like these either on accident or by pure calculation and sometimes are also able to hang their queen in one move or get back rank checkmated. Its truly beautiful what 1500s can do

Obviously I did not see the mate but I did evaluate that it was a pretty dangerous attack and that I would be winning at least three points on material back. Anyway, there was only one issue. The queen that took my knight checked my king across the board. Can't really say I was happy after that.

Well in this case I'm sure the player didn't even know the check mate was in 11. He just saw he was facing a mate in 1, and so literally the only hope is to block with checks. I'm sure after the first few checks the player started to realize there was incoming mate, not just evading the mate he was facing.

That 11# combination is both brilliant and easy in the same time. Its brilliancy depends solely on the person who played it - a 1500 player.
There is a reason for calling it "intermediate level" - both players are perfectly capable to attack the opponent's king and to defend their own, but there are mistakes all over the place - inaccuracies in attack and defence, missed chances of small tactics and improvements, simply unacceptable moves (like that "f7-f6", pointed out by Levy himself), a lack of prophylactic moves, again - like "b2-b3" move, which can save wK from any trouble.
The second move from that combination - 2.Rb1+! - implies that Black can use his full attacking potential, which is hard thing to do for this level, it requires sharp eye and broad vision, on the entire board. Beginners and Intermediate players often find it difficult to pinpoint which pieces can participate in attack or defence (or both, or swiching roles...), believe me, I'm dealing with this every day.
So, in our case 2.Rxc2+? leaves black with only 2 attackers - bQa5 and bpc3, wich is insufficient... but 2.Rb1+! also adds bBc8 as third piece in attack and White has no defenders - wRg1 and wBh4 are bad defenders, obviously., no wonder there i a checkmate.
What makes this combination so easy and straightforward then? Hm, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder... every experienced player will find all moves instantly, especially when they have to play under a threat of checkmate in 1.
However, all this isn't so unusual to happen... and I'll explain why - there is a transition period between states of intermediate and advanced player when such a player can play both awful and brilliant moves in one game, it's a part of players overall progress.
Nice instructional video on broad set of themes, how (not) to attack, how (not) to defend, how to counterattack, what is "prophylactic move",... the list goes on, and Mr. Levy fully covered it.

I actually wanted to suggest a new format with brilliant moves of your subscribers or amateurs in general. But now you had that idea on your own and I can just say: it's pretty damn fun and inspiring.
I'm about the same level as both of the players in the video and I've seen the start of the combination, but I wouldn't have been able to see if that really is a checkmate or not. But it's brilliant no matter if the sicilian player really calculated everything or not. Those incredible combinations are always fun to watch and I can just encourage you to upload more videos like this, Levy. :)
Keep up the good work and I wish you the best luck for your upcoming tournament. Hopefully you can land a knockout punch just like your subscriber :D

I don't know whether he saw that or just gave a bunch of very good checks. Either way, he saw he could sack his rook to at least get a perpetual which is very impressive and the bishop combination was very cool.

Many, many years ago (about 40 years ago) I was around 1500-1600 ELO and I played in a tournament where in my game I got to an interesting position with a lot of help from my opponent where I came up with a fantasy combination which resulted in a position where I had both knights and my queen en prise. GM Tony Miles wandered past, glanced at the board, stopped and then concentrated on the board for a short time, then wandered off chuckling.
A few moves later I had mated my opponent with a 2 knight smothered mate, I was very proud of myself - subsequently of course I realised the whole combination was fundamentally unsound and at best would have led to a slight edge for me. But at least I had made Tony Miles chuckle (may he rest in peace)

  • @carloseduardoflorescouoh3756

Hi there! I follow you quite a bit. What you said on minute 6.05 was a gem! "In chess time is everything, I mean, also in life, I guess (..)" I loved it because due to the short "I mean" correction or addition, you implied that chess is out of this world, like another universe, and that is so true. Let me share this gorgeous poem by Jorge Luis Borges, you might have to translate if your Spanish is not your thing, however Im sharing it in the original sound though. Thanks again.
    I
En su grave rincón, los jugadores
rigen las lentas piezas. El tablero
los demora hasta el alba en su severo
ámbito en que se odian dos colores.
    Adentro irradian mágicos rigores
    las formas: torre homérica, ligero
    caballo, armada reina, rey postrero,
    oblicuo alfil y peones agresores.
Cuando los jugadores se hayan ido,
cuando el tiempo los haya consumido,
ciertamente no habrá cesado el rito.
En el Oriente se encendió esta guerra
cuyo anfiteatro es hoy toda la Tierra.
Como el otro, este juego es infinito.
    II
    Tenue rey, sesgo alfil, encarnizada

If you're wondering, at 2:35 the knight can't take the 'free' pawn, because you can trap the opponent's queen with a NB5 sacrifice.
