Hello
1500 players are like a combination of a GM and drunk 900. Sometimes they find absolute beautiful combinations like these either on accident or by pure calculation and sometimes are also able to hang their queen in one move or get back rank checkmated. Its truly beautiful what 1500s can do
Lol so true.
I can 100% confirm this as a 1500 myself
I can confirm, though I hung my queen and fell to 14 hundred
im 1400 and i wholeheartedly agree with this
I am a 1500 Yesterday I played a game , opponent made two brilliant moves, was saccing knights and bishops like crazy, then proceeded to hang a piece and queen and resign
No way a 1500 ELO saw that 11-move checkmate. He saw he was getting mated in one, so he threw a prayer.
hahahahhaha
probably he saw check every move and see checkmate after 7-8 moves
Probably was aiming for a draw and accidentially won.
He/she probably already gave up but wanted to be annoying to the opponent, so he/se searched for every forcing move
Probably, "how I'll check until I'm mated. OH WAAAAAIIITTT"
I’ve been in blacks position, there’s absolutely zero calculations happening. That’s purely survival mode engaged at full throttle. Absolutely fantastic.
Depends on the player, I have had times where I just look for every sacrifice to maybe stall and other times where I see 8 checks in a row which allow me to get in a much better spot.
same but I usually get mated when that happens
Respect for white who actually let the mate to be delivered. Many players just resign or even worse, stall the clock to zero
You really think white though they were getting mated by a queen and a pawn and the a bishop that moved twice in the game?
yeah exactly, this was amazing.
@@DeJay7 As an intermediate, white has the LAST CHANCE to resign when the bishop slides in. That bishop check should definitely be enough for white to realize the mating attack. But no, white let black to finish the checkmate
@@DeJay7 Yeah, I Wouldn't be surprised if neither player realized it was over until black saw he could bring in the bishop, That's just my guess tho.
@@Noschool100 No he definetly saw it, moves were played fast.
Considering their rating, I would say black played Rb1+ when they saw they could get their queen in. Didn't see the entire sequence but then stumbled upon the winning combination after Qxc2. They saw that they could not stop checkmate and played Rb1+ as the final resort. Ended up working out.
why are you assuming he didn't see it?
@@eleonarcrimson858 Considering that it’s definitely not normal for a 1500 to calculate an 11 move combination, it’s a perfectly reasonable assumption
It’s good advice to take. When you think you’ve lost, instead of resigning, look for checks.
@@sidmate13 it's not that hard. They are basically the only checks here. Some 1500 are actually very good but lose because they just aren't good blitz players and lose in time trouble or don't learn theory on tricky openings, silly gambits because they probably play classical games and just "train" or play for fun in online and nobody plays them there (because they just don't work). That doesn't really matter here though. He played the first moves probably because they were only checks or which allowed continuing checking and saw the mate when they played qd2 not qc1
@@onniruusunen9444 wdym it's not that hard. Delusional
Yeah, there's been several games where I'm like "I think I did good" just to see the game report giving me a dozen blunders 🤣
Even worse... "I think I was comfortably winning the whole game."
Stockfish said my opponent had +33.9.
But does it count when 8 of those are (for example) "you never saw bishop b5 for eight moves?" That's not 8 blunders, that's one blunder.
@@yoseftreitman7226 true
@@yoseftreitman7226 In that game, I think it was most of the game that my opponent was completely winning (if only he would attack my king, I don't think in any specific way) he just didn't, and I didn't notice that he could.
Had a game were I had 6 blundered times in a row, not because I actually blundered, but because my opponent did, and I didn't pick up on it . LOL
the best mate I've seen was in 4 moves,it was so brilliant I started crying, since it was I who lose that

The beauty of the Sicilian is that often the players castle opposite sides and we see strong attack with counter attack. Usually ending up in an exciting game.
dammn i didn't know1500 elo play so well..
Even same sides castles Sicilians are rich and exciting.
Yeah exactly, I know levy says not to play it but I love it, I win a lot of games and every game is exciting and different from the get go
@@lewisoutten1610 it's a question of sample and consistency. probably some 1500 plays 1 game of 1000 as 2200

"Nah, just the usual ones"
Relatable 😭
Me: every one of them. I'm terrible.
I really enjoy this content about middle - higher rate players. Very instructive, also Levy makes it fun to watch
I love this far more than any video that discusses the many blunders made by terrible players. Those have been done so often that theyre boring. Its always the same format. The intermediate level games are by far the best, theyre not bad enough to be 200,but theyre not good enough to be 2500,theyre very human, and their thought process is very useful for lower rated players
I remember when I was around 800 Elo and sacrificed my knight for around a mate in 15. Obviously I did not see the mate but I did evaluate that it was a pretty dangerous attack and that I would be winning at least three points on material back. Anyway, there was only one issue. The queen that took my knight checked my king across the board. Can't really say I was happy after that.
Lol been there
@@NathanHedglin me too
its like levy is always saying in this series. you can accidentally find mate by checking repeatedly when being threatened with mate
One time I had 3 BRILLIANT MOVES! And I was just 498 in rapids, and it made me so excited. Even “a great move” makes my day :)
@@cewla3348 nah
@@KioDronee he removed his comment what did he say
As a 700 i had 2 brilliant moves in a row trapping a queen
People saying it's easy to find. Yeah sure, thinking of it like a tactic, cuz you know it exists, but seeing you can get mated in one move and possibly can't prevent it and finding the exact move order is VERY impressive. Congrats to the guy playing. Proud of my fellow 1500
Well in this case I'm sure the player didn't even know the check mate was in 11. He just saw he was facing a mate in 1, and so literally the only hope is to block with checks. I'm sure after the first few checks the player started to realize there was incoming mate, not just evading the mate he was facing.
Less to do with finding a mate in 11 and more to do with them just looking for any possible checks. It was game over on white's next move so black just kept prolonging the match on checks and unexpectedly chanced into a beautiful sequence.
Big fan of the b-pawn, which literally just marched across the whole board untouched and helped the queen deliver a mate. Absolute badass
Never allow COUNTERPLAY from your opponent, always check. I learnt this a 2 weeks ago, when I blundered a winning position.
This game shows how the queen is the most powerful piece
its like dominating a soccer game for 90 minutes and then lose 1:0 cause of a 30 meter banger in 90+3

At first I was like “wait I counted 10 moves” but realized that Nb4 to block Qb5 delays the mate by one move.
It was easy to find once I knew there was an M11. Rook b1 was the only forcing move that allowed the queen to get to the b2 square and everything after that is also quite findable. However huge compliments to the dude for finding in it a match (hopefully) without knowing the eval of the position. I am 1750 and I am very impressed. And I was proud for finding mate in 6, seems silly now :D
Thanks for all the amazing content Levy! Your chess recaps and explanation videos are really amusing. You are the number one chess youtuber for me (and im sure a lot of other viewers of your channel probably share my opinion). Keep up your amazing work!
15:36 Rb1 turned out to be a move that really does make sense.
And captures, captures.
Levi "Agadmator" Rozman
ok that was legitimately awesome at the end. that would be a solid weekend puzzle of the day. it's funny cause it probably started with spite checks before he realized he had something but still amazing.
The thing with having a high elo is just constancy. I’m like 1200 and win 10 games in a row with a few brilliancies and I can follow that streak with my queen getting trapped or speared back to back games to put me on a 10 lose streak
Not blundering hasnt that much to do with elo. The higher elo, the better their (natural) understanding of the game is. 1200’s f.e. shouldnt blunder pieces away. Especially not in 1 or 2 moves
@@YouGotTheFlue depends on what kind of match. It is still gonna happen in blitz. Rapid not as much
@@GudMarty I can understand bullet, not blitz. Im also not talking about getting forked or multiple move blunder but if person A makes a move attacking a piece which isnt defended and person B doesnt move or defend it
This is why playing super complicated and dynamic opening like najdorf is so much fun even if you know only till the beginning of the variation. But you have to adjust your mindset when white decided to play boring and solid lines.
The rook sacrifice on b1 is beautiful and the pawn supports the queen after. Don't know how deliberate the bishop position was but it certainly played it's part in the end.
That was a very well explained game levy...i especially like the part where you explained that his queen move was the problem and not the actual idea itself....showing some of us lower rated players these ideas really helps us understand positions better and how to develop and use tactics ....I thank you for that
This was brilliant indeed. One by one or three by three these moves are findable at almost any level. But the 11 move sequence is beautiful.

same thing happened to me today lol. i sacd every piece i had and i was 1 move away from unstoppable mate. but then my opponent found some 10 move mating sequence and i lost
I mean, black was probably like "Oh i gonna get chackmated lets do some checks and see how it goes". Still good rook sacrifice, the only possible move to deliver the check in that position thus it was spotted and probably not with plan to make concrete checkmate in 11 but still good job for the guy :D
Had a brilliant early game queen sacrifice the other day, felt like a genius for a moment 😂
This is an example of the supreme beauty levy mentions from time to time in regards to the flow and tennor of chess.
Damn I really enjoyed this video, the energy is very positive in this one, good stuff.
Can you please cover more intermediate games like these
Please do more of this intermediate analysis!!
totally brilliant man!!!...in that pressure situation of being mate in next move, finding that rook move idea is totally brilliant!!
Levy have my children pls
Just compare his energy level in this video and any candidate video.
I am stunned by me being able to find 8 of the 11 moves. That was genuinely beautiful.
This is relatable as i am usually on the checkmate receiving side 🤣
That 11# combination is both brilliant and easy in the same time. Its brilliancy depends solely on the person who played it - a 1500 player.
There is a reason for calling it "intermediate level" - both players are perfectly capable to attack the opponent's king and to defend their own, but there are mistakes all over the place - inaccuracies in attack and defence, missed chances of small tactics and improvements, simply unacceptable moves (like that "f7-f6", pointed out by Levy himself), a lack of prophylactic moves, again - like "b2-b3" move, which can save wK from any trouble.
The second move from that combination - 2.Rb1+! - implies that Black can use his full attacking potential, which is hard thing to do for this level, it requires sharp eye and broad vision, on the entire board. Beginners and Intermediate players often find it difficult to pinpoint which pieces can participate in attack or defence (or both, or swiching roles...), believe me, I'm dealing with this every day.
So, in our case 2.Rxc2+? leaves black with only 2 attackers - bQa5 and bpc3, wich is insufficient... but 2.Rb1+! also adds bBc8 as third piece in attack and White has no defenders - wRg1 and wBh4 are bad defenders, obviously., no wonder there i a checkmate.
What makes this combination so easy and straightforward then? Hm, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder... every experienced player will find all moves instantly, especially when they have to play under a threat of checkmate in 1.
However, all this isn't so unusual to happen... and I'll explain why - there is a transition period between states of intermediate and advanced player when such a player can play both awful and brilliant moves in one game, it's a part of players overall progress.
Nice instructional video on broad set of themes, how (not) to attack, how (not) to defend, how to counterattack, what is "prophylactic move",... the list goes on, and Mr. Levy fully covered it.

this... isn't a bad game...
well yes
this isn't a bad game actually. It's really good tactical game (by intermediate standard) with some extremely aggressive overconfident plays which leads to an entertaining game which intermediate players like us can relate to.
but he is right about the bad games
No regrets watching this, so incredible!!
I actually wanted to suggest a new format with brilliant moves of your subscribers or amateurs in general. But now you had that idea on your own and I can just say: it's pretty damn fun and inspiring.
I'm about the same level as both of the players in the video and I've seen the start of the combination, but I wouldn't have been able to see if that really is a checkmate or not. But it's brilliant no matter if the sicilian player really calculated everything or not. Those incredible combinations are always fun to watch and I can just encourage you to upload more videos like this, Levy. :)
Keep up the good work and I wish you the best luck for your upcoming tournament. Hopefully you can land a knockout punch just like your subscriber :D
For some reason I've just developed an incredible urge to rewatch the Daigo parry.
Really wonderful explanation of Sicilian themes and common mistakes for intermediate players!
This was a beautiful content and WHAT A COMEBACK, I would had resigned as black
That’s why before resigning, look for checks. Just as a last resort. You never know what they could lead to.

I don't know whether he saw that or just gave a bunch of very good checks. Either way, he saw he could sack his rook to at least get a perpetual which is very impressive and the bishop combination was very cool.

High quality intermediate games are great because you see more mistakes and can get models for more ways to capitalize on mistakes.
Levy's presentation make it even more exciting
white was so cocky, with his best position and space advantage, feels good to see him get checkmated
Many, many years ago (about 40 years ago) I was around 1500-1600 ELO and I played in a tournament where in my game I got to an interesting position with a lot of help from my opponent where I came up with a fantasy combination which resulted in a position where I had both knights and my queen en prise. GM Tony Miles wandered past, glanced at the board, stopped and then concentrated on the board for a short time, then wandered off chuckling.
A few moves later I had mated my opponent with a 2 knight smothered mate, I was very proud of myself - subsequently of course I realised the whole combination was fundamentally unsound and at best would have led to a slight edge for me. But at least I had made Tony Miles chuckle (may he rest in peace)
A good player doesn't always have to calculate an entire sequence of moves, but to intuitively drive themselves into a favorable position that could or could not deliver the final blow
16:38 you really revved that fucker up, too. "BISHOP" and then immediately realized the blunder.
Look at how angry Stockfish gets when you don't find force mate in 11
Good stuff! I've studied and noticed the "blue" eval moves are usually assigned after an opponent "red" move on chess com.
M11 is currently out of my reach! Lol

Bishop! That's a good one HAHA
As a low-rated player, I tend to get these when I realize my opponent has mate in 1 so all my moves have be checks.
Doesn't always save the game, but it always feels epic. 😂
there was actually a game between 2 gms in which one was in a losing position so he did a series of checks until he actually won
So black realizes they're losing and fires up an engine to bail them out. Classic online chess.
"King b1, king a1 then fall off the map" got me... 🤣 yeet outta here bro
you can also sacrifice second rook and deliver checkmate on queen side witd queen defended by pawn :)
Can’t see how this is brilliant. He sees he’s going to lose, so as anyone would do he just keeps checking and hoping for something to happen
0:12 everytime I say GG to myself
Analysis : we don't do that here
I think I played a game the other day that broke the record for the most missed forced mate sequences.
Amazing finding M11, knowing that your only way to not get mated is to just keep checking the king
Hi there! I follow you quite a bit. What you said on minute 6.05 was a gem! "In chess time is everything, I mean, also in life, I guess (..)" I loved it because due to the short "I mean" correction or addition, you implied that chess is out of this world, like another universe, and that is so true. I'm kinda proud that I saw all of those moves before Levi said them, I found the rook b1 sac and everything else after that was kinda obvious. The only one I didn't see actually was the bishop to h3 check, that's where I'd have probably fallen down. (I'm only 900)
If you're wondering, at 2:35 the knight can't take the 'free' pawn, because you can trap the opponent's queen with a NB5 sacrifice.
