- Before you demand my head (if you liked this movie), I actually enjoyed the 2017 live-action adaptation of Disney's 1991 animated masterpiece Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Josh Gad as Lefou, and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. BUT....it's objectively flawed, a lot of people hate it, and it could be better so let's fix that thing!
If I left out anything you had beef with, please comment below and explain how you would correct it? Also what do you think of my corrections? Lily Collins as Belle? Ryan Gosling as Beast? Less auto-tune? More depth? Lemme know!

Hermione and Belle are *NOT* synonymous AT ALL. I *hate* it when people (especially Emma Watson fans) try to justify the casting by using the "bibliophile" rationale. _Hermione_ is a SCHOLAR. She reads because she has a thirst for KNOWLEDGE. She's the quintessential know-it-all and overachiever. _Belle,_ on the otherhand, is a DAYDREAMER. She has a rich inner world and reads because it feeds her IMAGINATION. She's seen as a weirdo because she's dreamy and vague and always has her head in the clouds. In conclusion, no two bookworms are the same and it's about time people realize that fact.

I'm glad I am not the only one who thinks that Lily Collins would make a perfect Belle as she has a lovely beauty and personality. She can also sing. Emma is just too stiff and does not give off elegance that Belle has
Another thing to note about the live action Beauty of the Beast is that in the end when Cogsworth asks why The Beast let her go, MRS. POTTS intervenes and tells him that it's because he loves her. But in the animated version, The Beast answers Cogsworth HIMSELF with "I love her"... I feel like this is a verrryyyy small detail that's probably not important but just hearing the beast himself tell the others (Cogsworth, Lumiere, Mrs Potts) that he loves Belle really solidifies how much growth he's gone through because of Belle
That was the big issue I had with the remake was NOT ONCE does he actually say that he loves her. EVERYONE ELSE says it, but not him. It really bothered me because at the end I did not feel convinced he really felt more for her than maybe like.

But yes i cannot deny the fact that i too felt that casting for Belle was not appropriate. Emma sort of brought the vibe of "Hermione" to Belle's character. Which is not what I would like to watch. Belle is "NOT" Hermione at all. Well she likes books, likes adventures and she is smart but that isn't all. There is more to Belle than just those typical similarities. Belle is sweet, bubbly and so feminine. I would have loved to see those qualities in the 2017 version.
I thought of Anne Hathaway playing belle but now since you brought up lily it makes sense because I watched mirror mirror of her playing snow white and she would've understood belle's character (in my opinion), not only her being intelligent and passionate about books but also her being dreamy, imaginative, kind and sweet loving character.

the biggest complaint I have with beauty and the beast (2017) is belle`s ball gown it looked a cheap prom dress version of the dress that was in beauty and the beast (1991) plus it had bad timing beauty and the beast (2017) came out right after Cinderella (2015) and Cinderella (2015) had outstanding costume design
My biggest complaint is that the movie is too long extended with unnecessary scenes and songs 🙄
It's an irony that I make my own 'Beauty and the Beast' inspired novel and the cast is Lily Collins. That's why I 100% agree that Lily Collins is really suited as a live-action Belle.
I love Emma Watson tho.
Another thing to consider where Belles ‘updated’ character is concerned is that damned washing machine/book scene. When the school master comes over and chastises Belle for teaching a girl to read and then later the towns people destroy her washing machine-Belles reaction is to just…keep her head down and accept that kind of mistreatment…….now, the original animated Belle wasn’t aggressive or in your face but she was HARDLY a spineless push over, and Emma’s kind of was. In that scene she could have stood up for herself and declare she’s done nothing wrong but she doesn’t…in their attempts to make Belle ‘stronger’ they made her more of a pushover. Oh the irony!!
Another thing I would have changed was towards the end when the villagers attack the castle and the Beast is just up in his tower moping…leaving his staff to fend for themselves. It shows that he’s too self involved with his own self to put that aside and protect his supposed friends-this hurts the idea that he’s supposedly changed and learned to be less selfish. 😕
Yes that always bothered me the live action could have been an opportunity to fix that for the Beast to get involved to protect his people and that’s how him

Henry Cavill is wayyy too sexy and handsome to play Gaston. Women would want him to be the Prince. 😂

Gosh, I hate everything about this movie... The casting, the screenplay, the costumes, the soundtrack, the CGI characters... It's a big no from me. And the original is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Except T-Pain is actually a really good singer when he’s not using autotune. It’s a stylistic choice he made because it seemed to sell more…, but don’t be fooled, the guy can REALLY sing and has fairly good technique. On the other hand, Emma can sing on pitch and has a nice tone, but feels like an everyday person singing instead of a trained singer 🤷🏽♀️😅
my issue is belle's dress, such a downgrade..
Well, Lily is already a princess isn't she? She's Snow White. Maybe that's why she couldn't be casted.
Mirror mirror is not disney live action remake
You know it’s funny; I recently had a similar idea for a series like this, where I talk about the positive and negative aspects of certain movies and then talk about how the negatives could be fixed. Not only that, but I was thinking about doing this movie as the first video. I’m still trying to figure out how I want it to look visually. Also, I, too, would have casted someone else as Belle (and Lumiere).

Okay.... I just want Melissa Benoist to play belle because her character on Glee as Marley she was pretty much like belle.... and I wouldn't mind Chris Wood to play beast. .. but I like Dan too
I think you are spot on!!! I agree with all of the points you made. Disney should hire you as a consultant! I disliked ALL of the additions they added to pad the script. The Broadway version is much better written than this screenplay. (I would have enjoyed several of the Broadway versions songs as well, like Home!)
They completely changed Maurice’s character and eliminated all the humor from almost the entire film. Last point - Be Our Guest should have been a Technicolor dream sequence, not restrained with realism. It should have been a dazzling showstopper - but they were to rooted in their so called realistic live action… what a huge missed opportunity.

I cringe at the second scene when we are introduces to Belle and Emma Watson, I love her as an actress but she wasnt suited to this role, just based on her look alone. Then I hated the look of the beast.
I think Beast and Gaston should’ve been recasted for the live action Beauty and the Beast. Robert Pattinson should’ve been casted for Beast instead of Dan Stevens. They show emotion, they sing, and they can be savage at times. Also for Gaston, I agree that Henry Cavill can play the part.

Shortly after the release of the film, Sean Bailey said that Walt Disney Pictures will "explore possible [live-action] spin-off and prequel scenarios" for animated and live-action Disney films, including Beauty and the Beast. Emma Watson and Dan Stevens have both expressed interest in reprising their roles in a potential sequel or prequel to the film.
On March 6, 2020, ABC Signature Studios announced that it was developing a limited series focused on Gaston and LeFou, for Disney+. Luke Evans and Josh Gad will reprise their roles from the film, and will executive-produce the series alongside Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, with Gad, Kitsis and Horowitz serving as showrunners and writers for the series. Alan Menken was reported to be in talks to return as composer for the series, which he confirmed in April. The series will be titled Little Town. In June 2021, Brianna Middleton joined the cast as female lead. In January 2022, Jelani Alladin and Fra Fee joined the cast. In February 2022, Rita Ora joined the cast. However, only days later, it was announced the series was postponed indefinitely due to creative and scheduling issues.
I enjoy this alternate concept/cast! I am happy enough wuth what we got, but musically it could've been stronger; Emma Watson was apparently cast because it was uncertain if the film would be a musical at the time--which is INSANE to me.

I dislike Emma Watson's casting, but in all fairness to her, it's impossible to have any chemistry with a guy encumbered by a bulky suit full of electrodes or whatever it is they use. I'm a fan of practical effects. And Lily Collins, by all means.
I would´ve made "Beauty and the Beast" a NON-musical. Yes I know unlike the earlier Disney movies like from the 50s the Renaissance movies are very obviously made for Broadway and theatre musical and therefore harder to adapt, but still. NON-musical. And I would cast Lily Collins as Belle, Chris Evans as Adam/Beast (and use much more practical effects for the Beast) and Henry Cavill as Gaston. Costume wise I would choose a lot of inspiration from 1890/late 1880s (since the animated movie has lot of stuff making it seem like its more "modern") but with still enough fantastical and creative liberty. For Belles ballgown I imagine Christine Daaés (from "Phantom of the Opera" 2004) pink rose dress, but in gold instead

I personally think her singing is really good, but I agree that they used too much autotune and I dont like her dress. Beauty and the Beast was always my favorite Disney movie, and Belles dress was a literal DREAM. this movie took my Hope's and just crushed them with that dress. It was way too plain and where the heck were her pretty gloves??
Edit: I also REALLY hate the Beasts spaggeti cloak thing. It ticks me off so much.
I will never forgive people ruining the magic of film for the sake of social statements. Feminism doesn’t destroy awesome dresses Emma, your unwillingness to compromise or do your job portraying a character (someone you are not) does.
The story is fine but Emma Watson as Bella is not good
When I saw you had Lily Collins in the thumbnail I had to watch. I’ve been thinking to myself “Why didn’t they give Lily Collins a chance?” She’s really prettier than Emma and looks more like Belle. Plus she’s Phil Collins daughter-see how well she can sing then.

When I watched Beauty and the Beast it was when my mother in Law put it onto the TV. The moment I heard how artificial and auto tuned, I walked out of the room and refused to watch it. I just read a book.
My things is 1991 BATB had my heart and the thing is I wouldn’t have minded a copy paste vibe AS LONG AS you expand upon it! (THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG ONE) The “Story book” beginning with the calming enteramce going into the stained glass story telling (which was sooooo iconic) should have been placed in the live action. The climactic sounding beginning music felt rushed and so much going on and didn’t feel compelling.
I also didn’t like the “gender neutral” term of “if he can love another and earn THEIR love in return” I’m like why? We’re talking about a FEMALE character falling in love with a male character why did they change HER love to THEIR love???
WHY IS BELLE IN THE CENTER OF THE TOWN????!!!! if she’s supposed to be different why is she SMACK DAB IN THE CENTER? she’s didn’t really stand out either because because the towns people represented warm tones which is why Belle had a BLUE DRESS!
Belle (2017) had this attitude presence that didn’t fit Belle (1991) at all 😒🙄
Many things they could have expounded on
1. There’s an extended version of the 1991 BATB and they had a sequence song called ’Human Again’ which showed the antiques singing about life being human again, showed Adam (Beast) and Belle in the library and Belle READING TO ADAM! they could have added that scene!!!
2. Speaking of the library we could have had extended scenes in there and add chemistry while in the library (thank you for talking about the library scene it was NOT grand at all)
3. They could have added more emphasis on incorporating things from the BATB “2” the enchanted Christmas and mentioned how Adam hated Christmas OR SOMETHING!!
lastly what PISSED ME OFF THE MOST was CLEARLY the rule was “if he could love another and earn her love in return before the last petal falls…”
If they weren’t going to follow it THEN WHY HAVE IT IN THERE ??? the enchantress floating through out the movie was really confusing and had no meaning just like the magical book 😒🙄
I truly do not understand how Disney cannot ever think to take a clue from The Greatest Showman in the respect of having the option to dub another singer over the screen actress...
Emma Watson's Belle would have been a great opportunity for that. Also, for all those people arguing that Halle Bailey was perfect for Ariel because of her voice...they could have dubbed her voice and then everyone would still get to see their childhood princess come to life.
I think the film doesn't need to be fixed and i think maybe its not as good as the fairytale or the cartoon but its pretty good for a tale with real people,its easier to much the voices when you cant see the person behind it but when it comes to matching an actor with the voice is really hard
emma is great as belle but i just wish her hair was darker. lily collins would have been my first choice as belle though she would have been so good!!!!!!

As for me I love the live action very well
The rose was so underwhelming. The only thing that made it look decent was the etched glass cloche over top. However there was really nothing there to peek belles interests. They could have made it glow and sparkle yet we get this shriveled rose under a glass with just as much depth as the flat movie
Emmy Rossum as Belle, she has a nice voice but won't outshine anybody! While we're at it can we switch Emma Thompson and Audra McDonald? Have Audra as Mrs. Potts and Emma Thompson as Madame Garderobe? Give my Audra screen time dammit!

It is not a "big" issue in the bigger pucture, but I hate the new take on the pink dress. It is realy ugly, the pink colors are clashing, why dose it has an apron? Why does the apron have embroydery? That is unpractical. The pink cape lookes sheep and unable to keep anyone warm.
I am not one those people that hate it l, i love it and so does my mom, she will only watch this and not the old one

I didn’t like that the beast was kind of an ass not as sweet and gentle. I did like that he also was interested in literature but he made fun of her taste in books which was a turnoff. I didn’t like that they changed him giving her the library into this offhanded moment instead of a beautiful gesture that showed that he realized her interests and passions. I just would have had it be his idea instead of Lumieres.
Belle's mother should have been the enchantress!!! Although I prefer your idea.

I agree with the singing but, WTH the movie is a disney movie just ENJOY IT, if you can't just don't watch it (also it is really sad how they put their all in it and people just HATE ON IT, IT IS A MOVIE IT WON'T BE PERFECT)
I feel like lily Collins or emmy rossum could play belle better than emma watson ,because of their face features.
I had no big issues with the casting except with the two main leads. Emma played the character too casually and with too much indifference. Rather than a bright energetic country girl with too many romanticized ideas(cause she has never actually been anywhere) Emma felt like a modern city girl kind of hanging out with everyone. Not right for the story or location.
Dan Brown is a good actor, but I did not feel he was right for the role…he was not gruff enough, and not masculine enough. Luke Evans as Gaston had more masculine charm than Dan. Now this could be influenced by the fact that the whole character was CGI, so you felt disconnected from it….in that case they should have made it a practical effect. The French Beauty and the Beast that came out around the same time did that…. And oh my you could feel the chemistry. But Dan has a very polite and sweet tone to him, and that did come out in his performance too much in my opinion.
The last part they need to fix is the dialogue. In the whole live action NOT ONCE did the beast EVER say that he loved Belle. All the other characters said it for him. And while he did have a song talking about his love, it was described vaguely and referee to as longing… the lyrics never directly say “I love you”. This firstly makes you feel not quite certain that he really has changed into a better person, but the whole time I kept thinking “does he really like her, or does just want to be friends” And this was also because the actors didn’t have real chemistry. Together… they felt like friends hanging out. A simple “I love you” from him would have helped.
There are other live action remake. And they were bad. And emma Watson wasn't on those flim.
The design of the beast is just awful in this movie
Beauty and the Beast 2017 does not need to be fixed at all. It is perfect and amazing in every way. I love it so much. It is my favorite Disney movie and I watch it all the time. Everything about it is perfect. The actors, singing, dancing, costumes, wigs, lighting, props, special effects, CGI, etc... I wouldn’t change it for anything.
