- I’m not usually this harsh, but it was late and I needed to vent and I’m pregnant so I have an excuse.
Here I take some time to compare scenes from the animated and the remake BatB to illustrate how much more disappointing the new one is.

In Spanish we say "Courtesy doesn't mean you don't have courage". Animated Belle is one of my favorite characters, so kind, gracious and gentle and so brave and intelligent. Emma Watson fails to project her warmth and sweetness. Feminine qualities don't mean weakness. That's insulting. And don't get me started on the horrible Beast CGI. Cartoon Beast is so alive, so expressive and endearing. I was really disappointed.
Don't forget Beast fluffiness ❤️❤️, his smile , the way he touches Belle....the CGI one looks like an awful Halloween costume in comparison
I really hate the over-reliance on CGI these days. Live-action Beast has already been done, and done so much better than this. Hell, it was done even before the animated movie was made. 1987's Beauty and the Beast TV series with Ron Pearlman as Vincent. Yes, its a little dated now, but at least you can tell what the character is thinking and feeling without that weird uncanny valley tripping you up.

Can we stop with the ridiculous notion that qualities are feminine or masculine? Kindness doesn't have genitalia. Bravery, graciousness, gentleness, sweetness, etc. don't either.
One of the best parts in the animated movie is when the angry Beast is holding Gaston by the throat and Gaston is begging for his life. The Beast's expression softens. He feels compassion and decides not to kill Gaston. The Beast isn't showing femininity. He's showing compassion.
I really don't understand why this is such a difficult concept.

I think one issue is that what you (and so many of us) love about Belle, her kindness and politeness, is seen as weak by there filmmakers and something that needed to be corrected. But you’re right, we see her strength in that she’s always polite but her boundaries are firm. That she would turn down his invitation for dinner that first night, with a polite no thank you, shows her bravery. He’s a huge monster, probably capable of ripping the door down and eating her, and yet she will not budge. She’s amazing, one of the best princesses, and they did her dirty.
They don't understand the amount of willpower it takes to be polite and nice to someone being a jerk. Clearly none of them have ever had a customer service job.

This 100%. It is why some modern critics incorrectly call princesses like Snow White and Cinderella “weak”. They aren’t able to appreciate that strength can be shown in many ways.

I'm never going to stop being salty over this garbage remake and I'm never going to stop autoclicking on UA-camrs ranting about it.

Yes, Emma was miscast here. They thought her popularity as Hermione would translate to the “bookworm” Belle. But Belle is a dreamer, she has warmth, she has grace and patience.
They should have cast a more expressive actress.

What this movie taught me was that Emma Watson is a sometimes ok actress who should definetly NOT allowed to sing and to take decisions about dresses or the script. I blame her ego because she wanted to be """""""""""feminist"""""""""""" and she wasnt. She was rude, annoying and really cold with everyone.
"Emma Watson in a castle" was a huge nostalgia bait.
Emma Watson's Belle is so boring honestly. I'm not trying to be rude or anything. I actually really like Emma and she seems so sweet in real life, I don't know why she portrayed Belle in such a bland way. She seems so cold and distant and the reason why I loved Belle is that she's the complete opposite. She's warm and kind, dreamy, and excitable. She always wanted to go on an adventure, to have a change of scenery, so when she arrives at the castle her childlike curiosity is shown when she explores the west wing. Emma's Belle just went through the motions. There was no motivation behind her actions displayed in her acting. It was so disappointing. Emma Watson is a hit-or-miss actress for me. I loved her in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Harry Potter, but this performance was so lifeless. It seemed like instead of playing Belle, she was playing herself dressed as Belle.
Plus she can't sing. At all. The autotune was so cringe.
I totally agree. Also she was involved in the screenwriting, she wanted Belle to be a "feminist", so she wanted her to be an inventor instead of Maurice. The script was awful not just for Belle and the Beast, it was awful for all the cast. Gaston having a PTSD?? , Gastón didn't need damage, he was a bully and that was enough; Le Fou being gay?, Le Fou paying to the people to sing ??, The teleporting book?... Many thinks done very bad for being only focused on Emma"s acting
@@ingridsuperfreak I agree as well. I am majoring in film and there’s a big rule about leaving actors out of the script writing process in the professional world and the editing process. It just makes the film worse because the actor is biased. It’s such a huge no no. I don’t know why they allowed her to break those rules. Your job is to act and not to direct. The director directs, not the actors. I think that’s why the film doesn’t work. The powers behind it weren’t balanced and those who were supposed to do their jobs weren’t doing their jobs.

I remember during my first time watching the remake, when Belle said the line, "If you hadn't frightened me, I wouldn't have run away!"
I was sitting in the theater ready to scream, "YOU LITERALLY TRIED TO RUN AWAY, THOUGH. REMEMBER? THE SHEET ROPE?"
When you change things for the remake, you gotta commit to the changes.
I haven't seen the remake. She tried to escape? That goes against everything her character stands for. Belle CHOSE to be there in the first place. It was HER decision to take her fathers place. She stayed, not because he kept her a prisoner, but because of her honor. WTF?
@@byMidnyt I know, right? In the remake, if I remember right, Belle tricks both her father and the Beast into letting her be captive in her father's place. This... works, for some reason, and then she tries to escape basically the first chance she gets. Only reason she doesn't succeed is that Mrs. Potts catches her about to leave and talks her out of it. I... guess Belle likes Mrs. Potts and doesn't want her to be sad that they don't have a prisoner anymore? I don't know. It's been a long time.
I'm pretty sure Disney thinks that rejecting traditionally feminine traits like empathy and politeness is how to be a feminist. Which. Ugh.
That scene felt a respond to a criticism that didn't actually exist. (Also why did she think scaling down an iced covered tower in the dead of night was a good idea? This is supposed to be the improved version remember.)
The part that trips me out about that first escape scene in the remake is that when Mrs. Potts sees her tying the sheets together, she's just like, "Understandable, but have a little tea first." Then when she's leaves the second time after visiting the West Wing, Mrs. Potts (like everyone else) is trying to accost her. Why the change? Also Belle trying to leave an extra time doesn't make her any more independent or strong. 🙄
@@ArmednotTriggered I think it's because Mrs. Potts at first thinks she can talk her into staying, she doesn't actually want her to escape. (Which is way more messed up than it's meant to be, no one in the castle actually cares about Belle they just want the curse broken. Understandable but the way it's played makes everyone way creepier than in the original.)
Another thing that was taken away that I'm just now noticing, was how the beast when falling deeper in love with Belle he became shy towards her. It is such a small, sweet character development for him and how he just wanted to make Belle happy but still cautious because she's so beautiful to him 😭. Especially in the balcony scene, they sit down to relax and he is so shy around her, he slowly slides over and asks if she's happy there with him.
I died from laughter and cringe at the live action, how they robotically walk to the small balcony and just stare out in the distance 💀💀💀.
Even before the dance scene he shows how shy he was , when he was taking a bath , Lumiere asked him to confess his love for her , but he said he can't. He was no longer the self confident Beast he appeared to be , now we were watching the real human inside all that furr and anger . Here in the remake , even when he is taking the bath, I can't see that change, he is being almost the same jerk he was at the beginning, no character development at all . That's why the animated Beast is my favorite character of the classic movie and of all Disney in general , his development happens because of his own volition, because he wanted to .
Yes, I loved that tiny detail and it showed how he was becoming human even tho he was a beast. That’s how humans get around people they like. They get a little shy.
My biggest peeve was when the beast can't even admit himself that he loves belle without mrs. Potts interjecting it for him! That was his pinnacle "I'm selfless and I've now changed " moment. Emma Watsons belle was also trash and she should have never had as big of say in belle's character as she did. She obviously did not get the character
I actually like her character a lot more, it just doesn't fit with a love story. The captor captive aspect ruins everything, the Beast deserves the condescension he gets from Belle, she doesn't owe it to him to be polite or to teach him things. It seems a lot more like making the best out of a bad situation. But in my opinion, the story of the Beauty and the Beast could've been way more interesting if it were not a romance in the end.
@@realimereads2707 But that undermines the whole point of the movie's plot? Also, if they didn't fall in love then it would've ended with The Beast and his servants remaining cursed forever. So, basically, you wanted the bad ending. Where Belle ends up with a misogynist asshole who sees her as a trophy wife. And The Beast and the servants to live forever cursed. Okay.
i agree, emma watson definitely and completely missed the context of why belle was seen as an outsider, in the 18th century it was so rare to see an educated or even a woman who knew exactly what she wanted in life, you were mostly relegated to being arm candy of your husband, and if dared to have any dreams outside of your gender role and gender norms you were outcast.
@@Pinkstars1605 BINGO. Instead, her changes gave the townspeople valid reasons to hate her. In the animated version, they looked ill on her for her love of reading, which most women couldn’t do. But Emma’s version was self-centered and rude.
Yes! I wanted to hear Beast himself say, “Because, I love her.” Plus the anguish that we see on his face. I have no idea why they gave that line to Mrs. Potts!

Yeah, even if he has a muscular body, all I can say is “Yeah, it’s just the midriff of a human in an anthropomorphic animal’s body”.
Kinda reminds me of Mr. Rourke in Atlantis: The Lost Empire because even though he is well-built, that doesn’t do anything to improve his appearance (from the outside and inside).
Are you kidding? Why would a furry take this thing over the original Beast?

I thought I was the only one who thought Belle and Beast lacked chemistry in the live action version. In the animated version, it feels like "I'll see your gesture of kindness and raise you a gesture of appreciation until we gradually earn each other's love by bringing out the best in each other." In the live action, it feels more like "Meh...I'm not really feeling it, but it's in the script, so I guess we're in love now, right?"
Yeah saw this review and another video talking about chemistry and I am agreeing that this film could of displaying romance better

Just like Belle and the Beast have to earn each other's love, they have to earn the audience's favor, or we don't care what happens to either of them, and one of the best ways to impress us is through their interactions with other characters. If Belle really convinces us that she has a strong bond with her father, is working to see past the Beast's outbursts of temper and help him embrace his better nature, and truly wants to befriend the castle servants, treating them like they're already her fellow human beings and not objects, we tend to like her and think she deserves to marry the prince because someone who helps govern a country should have a compassionate heart. But if Belle just seems to be going through the motions and doesn't really click or bond with any of the other characters, we think, "No wonder no one in your village likes you! You sing about how boring they are because they all have to work for a living, and then you can't be bothered to do anything to show that it's all just a lot of misunderstanding on both sides, and you actually want to connect with others. Seriously?" I think Belle in this movie attempted in a few scenes to show her kindred spirit, but for some reason, it just didn't work out. All the moments that were supposed to tug at the heartstrings just felt forced, and I think that may be for the reason you mentioned: Belle doesn't really have chemistry with anyone.
It's never too late to see people roasting this movie, it's always welcome.
I'm having a cathartic marathon of these videos... Ughh I'm so angry hahaha, how they butchered the perfect score at the begining and in the transformation scene
One little thing that annoys me so much with this movie is the mirror-father-scene. Animated Belle says "Show me my father, please" ... New-Belle just demands to see the father, but has no time for simply courtesy. But it shows so much about Belle's character, that she's able to thank an inanimate object.
I also think Emma Watson was a horrible choice. Belle is a very feminine and kind character, not a tom-boy-activist. But femininity, kindness or any other traditional female-character-trait is evil nowadays, I guess?!
She was all wrong for that role. She lacks depth, maturity, and any kind of sensuality, and all of her "feminist hero" moments just make her come off as strident, petulant, and rude. It's almost as if they cast Hermione Granger...
Belle is so polite that she still says please to an inanimate magic mirror. 😊

Emma Watson and Dan Stevens had exactly zero chemistry..that doesn't help. Plus the truly terrible autotune was so distracting that it was hard to focus on anything else. I really didn't like this version.
Agreed. Some performers could have chemistry with a table lamp, while others can't have chemistry for all the atmosphere the production crew creates. No matter how crap the story got twisted, it was down to the actors to sell it, and it flopped...hard.
the fact that Stevens looked like he was 20 years older than Watson didn't help either
Watch the French dub. The voice acting by actors who can actually sing and emote actually do a lot to make this movie not only bearable, but actually nice. We can’t change the way Emma and Dan look at each other, but at least there’s emotion in the voice that isn’t condescension, and the singing is beautiful. You couldn’t pay me to watch the original cast, but I might watch the French version again just for how impressive of a job the French cast did in changing the way many scenes can be perceived.
I recommend watching sideways video on this, he explains it’s not the auto tune precisely, but the fact that they sang live, then also did a studio recording then cut between the two for a better take (which was worthless because it sounded bad anyway)
If only they had sung on camera rather than in the studio as Lés Mis did.
Why was his back injured instead of his arm? Part of why the 1991 version worked is because Belle & the Beast had to make eye contact throughout their exchange.
I never thought about it, but that's a great point. There are so many reasons why Beast having a back injury isn't as effective as an injured arm. First of all, these are wolves, not lions, so they're not going to leap onto his shoulders and try to snap his neck or break his spine. They're going to grab and pull down. Arm injury makes sense. A lot of survivors of dog attacks have injured hands/arms, and when I was bitten by wolves, it was around the wrists, thumbs, and throat. (Thankfully, the ones who bit me were just puppies having fun instead of adults seeking a meal or defending territory, so everything was okay, but I digress.) Second, being wounded in the back is not generally seen as heroic, especially in a movie, because it implies you got the injury as you ran away from the fight, whereas injured arms/face/chest means you bravely stood your ground. Third, like you mentioned, there are a lot of reasons why Belle tending the Beast's arm works a million times better. They're actually forced to have a face to face conversation instead of arguing through a closed door or talking over their shoulders or standing several feet away or turning to flee. Belle has also just seen those paws break furniture and overpower an entire pack of wolves, so she probably realizes if Beast hits her, it could do some serious damage, but she still doesn't back down from standing up for herself during their shouting match. Beast is also having quite the problem because even though it hurts, he has to practice self control. If he hits her, he condemns not only himself, but his entire castle. Furthermore, he's in a situation that's definitely bittersweet. Finally, a beautiful young woman has her hand on his. Just what he's been hoping for, but what he feared would never come to pass. But instead of it being an affectionate gesture, it's because their constant bickering indirectly led to a wolf attack. I also think Belle tending the Beast's arm adds more to the line "And when we touched, she didn't shudder at my paw." She probably had some concerns and possible hesitations about touching his paw to clean his wounds (since it was the night they first met and they still were a far cry from being friends), but she clasps his paws to thank him for the library, and in the garden, it's just a natural gesture for her to help adjust his paws to draw in the birds. Progress! And then he gets to where she lets him stroke her hair because she knows she can trust him. Definite progress from the scene where he breaks stuff in the West Wing!
I completely agree. You said perfectly what was so wrong with this film. This movie is the perfect example of how NOT to do a romance.
Also the scene where Belle goes to the West Wing and the Beast scares her away was just done so poorly in the remake. In the animated it was truly scary and naturally Belle ran off terrified. In the remake I didn't understand why she was so scared. It wasn't that scary and he didn't act any meaner than he had been. Also it made the scene of Belle trying to escape earlier pointless. If she could leave that easily, why didn't she just walk out the door sooner? While it made sense in the animated since she was trying to keep her promise till that huge fright. Also, I didn't need an explanation of how the Beast got on the horse. That time could have been used for better things. Like showing they actually care for each other. Though I can't see how Belle would like this jerk. And I don't see how Beast would like Emma's uncaring Belle either. She was way too fierce with no softness whatsoever.
In the end one of the biggest problems with this film was Emma Watson was determined not to be Belle, but for the film to be her own self-insert fanfiction. And the director sure shares the blame as he let her. She wasn't Belle, she was herself. Because apparently to her having any kind of traditional feminine qualities is a bad thing and being feminine is weak (that's very problematic). I am definitely glad she wasn't Cinderella like Disney originally wanted, she would have ruined it.

I completely agree. I also hate that they took away that little scene from the animated movie in the West wing scene after Belle runs away where the beast realizes he made a mistake. Like that we know he wasn't intentionally mean but lost his temper and it makes him going after her and saving her more believable . In the remake he just turns to the rose instead of actually caring that Belle ran away. Like that him saving her from the wolf comes out of nowhere. God, I hate the remake!!!
@@mariechen4375 Oh, yes, taking away that scene was a huge fail. It showed so much of the Beast's character and that his anger was rooted in fear and that he wasn't really that awful. And it showed that afterwards he truly cared for Belle. In the remake it seemed he would be quite fine with her being killed the woods.
Also changing it from the Beast taking Belle to a room from the dungeon to the servants doing it instead was awful too. It showed the Beast cared for her comfort and health. Especially showing his bit of remorse beforehand when Belle was crying. In the remake he was quite happy to let her rot in a cell. And changing it from Belle crying to trying to escape was another fail. It was seeing Belle crying (which there is no shame in and she's not weak for it) that made the Beast start to realize his own faults and that he was wrong in how he treated her. That's crucial.
Also we didn't really need the scene at the beginning showing how awful the Beast as a human was. That was a waste of time and made him really unlikable. The quick narration of what happened was much better and kept him more mysterious as it wasn't a defining moment for us. In the animated we saw from the moment the Beast saw Belle crying for her father glimpses of his humanity and that inside he was capable of being good.
And it's just so ironic how Emma Watson's Belle likes a truly mean jerk, who insults her books. That's one of the reasons animated Belle hated Gaston. While in the remake Gaston does try to be nice and take interest in her books and she just hates him and is so mean to him still. The "Nobody can change that much" line was just so mean. Yeah, Gaston later showed a darker side, but remake Belle wasn't there for it, so her meanness to him didn't make sense like the animated.
In the remake the Beast and Belle were two jerks who were together because the script said so. Yeah, the remake is just terrible and the more you look at it, the more awful you see it is. It's really hard to stop talking about all the awful bits as it's almost the whole film.
Cinderella was garbage even without Emma Watson. It suffered from the same thing this movie suffers from (and what all the live action remakes suffer from): they exist to correct what are preceived flaws in the original. Cinderella is often criticized for having a weak female lead. She waits around for a man to save her, etc. The new Cinderella decided to fix that. She now speaks multiple languages, has friends, is well-educated, goes out riding, etc.
However, by making her stronger, they actually make her weaker. Why doesn't she leave her evil step family? In the original, Cinderella is orphaned when she is a very young child. She is subjected to a lifetime of abuse by her step family. There's nothing to suggest that the stepmother educated her in any way beyond being a servant. we don't see her participate in music lessons with her stepsisters. She never leaves the house, her only friends are mice, a dog, a horse, and birds, etc. There's nothing to suggest she has been taught how to make a life for herself outside of being a servant for her family.
In the new one, she's orphaned when she's an adult. She has lots of skills since her parents loved her and educated her. Her excuse for not leaving is that she wants to care for her father's house. But then she walks away the minute the prince shows up so that doesn't make sense.
Still, the original Cinderella wants out of her situation. When she gets locked in the attic, she yells for help, she directs the birds to get the dog to sic the cat so the mice can get her the key. In the remake, she doesn't even know the prince is there. She's just singing in the attic daydreaming. The prince finds her by accident because he hears her singing. She doesn't even open the window herself!
Disney just needs to stop with the remakes unless it's for a movie that wasn't done particularly well. I'm thinking specifically about the Black cauldron. The Black cauldron is actually the second in a five-part series called The Chronicles of Prydain. It's an awesome series that the movie messed up. I would love a live-action remake.
@@rosenightingale5611 don't forget the part that in the animated version when Belle runs away the servants try to talk out her but they fail. In the remake they instead try to lock the door before she runs out. Live action servants are irritating and jerks as well.
And what stupid idea was that that if the last petal fall they will eventually die. Beast just simply wanted to kill offs everyone.
In the animated version, Belle is never a true prisoner. She leaves on her own will at first. After only one day mind you. She then out of the goodness of her heart saves the beast and returns. Not Stockholm syndrome at all. Much more of a genuine tale than most remember
I know I’m in the minority when it comes to the song Evermore, but the ROAR that the Beast gives out in the animated version as Belle is leaving shows much more heartbreak than the entire Evermore song.
I love finding other people who aren't crazy about Evermore. When this movie came out, my entire tumblr dash was blowing up with how heartbreaking and beautiful it was, and when I finally got a chance to hear it I was...underwhelmed, to say the least.

You know i feel Bad for Dan Stevens because i'm sure he gave his a material and he can actually sing but the roar of the beast in the good movie is more effective to me
And don't forget the OST sounding in the background ! I gets me chills even now !. When I was a girl and watched that movie for the first time , I almost cried at that scene. Evermore ....meh just skip because at that time I was falling asleep 😅
Emma was playing Belle As Emma Watson The Feminist instead of as the character of Belle (who was a very feminist character, just not feminist in the way Emma feels demonstrates female agency.) . She was so wrapped up in this concept that “strong” female characters can’t be kind or wear corsets that she missed what made Belle, Belle. The interpretation of the character she brought to this film would never have fallen in love with The Beast because she’s so emotionally closed off trying to be so brave and feisty. Spoiler alert, being a contrarian isn’t strong or feminist..
Also screw the writers for leaving out the promise she makes to stay which is really the thing that their whole relationship hinges on. She can’t claim she wouldn’t have run away had he not frightened her (and he never told her not to go in the west wing so the crossing of that boundary means literally nothing in the remake) because she never promised she would stay to begin with, she TOLD he father she intended to escape, and we literally see her making a rope to climb out her window. The sacrifice means nothing because she doesn’t intend on staying forever and animated Belle absolutely does in good fairh when she says “You have my word.” But Emma’s Belle is strong woman” and strong women escape and go looking to antagonize their captors. Or something. As opposed to the strength the original Belle has in making that sacrifice to take her father’s place to begin with.
Is it ironic that the changes done in order to make Belle "better" kinda resulted in her losing a lot of what made the character likable in the first place?
Another example I can think of is her encounter with Gaston, where, unlike in the animated version, he's actually a gentleman when asking her to dinner but Belle acts insulted that he dared speak to her.
@@CoolG97 she absolutely comes off as a snob not as someone being harassed by a chauvinist. Also he didn’t propose to her. So it’s weird she says she won’t married him.
@@sheroxtheboat Yeah Gaston seems to be one of the few in the town that actually likes Belle and she treats him like dirt. It's weird how he of all people ends up being likable. (And I can't even blame him for what later happens with Maurice because Gaston is making rational points but Maurice refuses to listen and chooses then to denies his blessings.)
Her father is the inventor and Emma thought why not do that as well, what the point of the dad then if you take his character to get a rose and that’s it. She should of been dubbed for the music she atrocious.
@@natasha8966 It also makes the dad look stupid as he stops mid escape to get a rose. (If Emma wanted Belle to be strong and independent she should've petitioned to make her a tutor or schoolmistress those were jobs for women at the time.)
Edit-Maurice largely exists now to give Belle pep talks about how she's the best and everyone else is just haters and be put into deadly situations mostly caused by his own stupidity. (And not in the funny way)
Belle & Beasts romance in the remake is Awful. The Beast is a Brat and Belle is rude and obnoxious and snobby
What I don't get is the remake is longer than the original, yet the important moments are shorter? The "fixing" parts just made it worse honestly.

The live action remake should be called Emma Watson's feminist movie.
I think the actors could have pulled off the roles, but I think that the biggest reason it didn't work is because the remake writers didn't believe Belle would fall in love with the Beast if he weren't her intellectual equal. So they made him snarky (I think they were going for wit, but all it seemed like was snark).
Comparing the versions: In the animated movie, Beast's childlike aspects are magnified because kids are the audience and it's likely they can relate to the Beast if he's more of a kind of goofy, confused kid than if he's brooding or huffy throughout the movie. He has tantrums and lashes out because he is self-loathing. Belle is a kind person who is patient and understanding, and she recognizes that he has a sensitive core. With positive reinforcement from her he tries to improve and he wants Belle to be happy. He grows to care about her more than his own happiness.
In the Stage Musical: Beast is probably the balance that the Remake should have gone for. His self-loathing is given more focus with his song "If I Can't Love Her" and he comes off as definitively like an adult when he sings about how vulnerable his heart is that if she won't love him because of his curse he'd want to die ("Let the world be done with me"). I also love that in the Stage Production it kind of explains why he is such a brute at the start. Everyone in the palace's curse is becoming more pronounced. He is becoming more beast than man before Belle comes and brings out his humanity. He can't even remember how to read and asks her to teach him how.
In the remake: They sort of just make his narrative less the focus and his journey is hardly a transition that feels like a big deal. He doesn't really get as stand out moments as the animated version. Like in the library scene in the original he does it because he wants Belle to feel happy. In the remake he just shows her the library just to brag about how well read he is.
I disagree with you in some points, Beast wasn't childish because to be related to the kids in the audience, he was childish because when he was coursed he was a CHILD, he was just 11 years old , he was also goofy because of his isolation and becoming more beastly (in fact in his room you can see an animal carcass when Belle enters to the room, Maurice was the first human in years that entered to his castle and he reacted in a very rude way, thinking Maurice was looking at his appearance.
I think this movie was once compared to Snowwhite and Pinocchio because it captured Disney's spirit, Walt made movies not for children, but for the children inside if all of us
Honestly, I'm not sure that Emma could have pulled it off. I don't dislike her, and I have not watched the remake (nor have I seen the musical) but in all the clips I've seen (there are quite a few out there), the emotion on her face just doesn't quite make it. In the scene where the Beast lets her go, I'm not sure what that look is, but it doesn't read as regret or indecision to me.

@@ingridsuperfreak I agree with most of what you said however I think the curse is meant to be interpreted differently… and that time passing differently for beast versus the objects his innocent servants is involved, he‘s shown to be a teenager of around 15-17yrs old when the curse happens so what to the outside world might’ve been 10 years is only like 5 in the castle but beast doesn’t know how much time has passed - another part of his punishment. With him aging slowly whereas his servants stay as they are as they weren’t meant to lose time on top of being cursed

I agree completely, but also, unrelated to their chemistry but I need to comment it somewhere, one change that ruined the movie for me was the curse. In the animated version, by letting Belle go Beast is basically condemning his staff to remain as objects, which sucks, but fair enough, it's unfair to keep Belle there for them, it's not her fault, she's not even aware that the curse can be broken, and because he will also remain a beast, all of them are accepting the same punishment, but in this one, they will DIE if the curse is not broken, there are kids, and they will DIE if she leaves, while he will actually just remain a beast, but he is as nonchalant about it as in the animated, as if the stakes are equally high? But when I was watching it I was just like, if I was Miss Pots, whose child is going to DIE because Beast was feeling romantic and cute, I would literally find a way to push him down the balcony. Anyway, it was an unnecessary change and it just accidentally made the Beast seem super selfish and self-absorbed.
💯% agree. And I hate how he actually has a conversation with them about it after she leaves. It makes him look SOOO selfish.
The one scene that got to me was when Mrs. Potts was frantically looking for Chip before they all died, and he was looking for his mom, and they couldn’t find each other and then died (either died, or were alive as fully animated objects, which is a horror movie and a half). As a mother, that part actually made me cry. If they wanted to go with that, it needed to be clear early on as their motivation. Instead, the given motivation was that they felt responsible for him not being raised to be kind, as if they had the power to do that. If their motivations as they were going to DIE, then trying to convince Belle to stay would have made sense. They didn’t try to get her to stay in the original since she didn’t try to leave and was determined to stay on her own accord. They also could have had Dan’s Beast have a massive internal conflict about this issue before releasing her. He didn’t really even seem to care that the staff and their children would just cease to really exist. He could have decided he couldn’t demand she stay when doing so would destroy any chance of love anyway and so they’d all basically die, so the only thing to do was to release her and then a lot of self-loathing for what he caused. It could have been heart-shattering. But it wasn’t. The only thing that hit me was the thought of a mother and child being in fear and trying to see each other once more.
You did great at saying how sweet Beast is to Belle!, when he asked her to close her eyes he brings her so sweetly inside his library and talks to her all the time so she could be able to trust him; when he plays with her hair softly, maybe trying to tell her through actions how much he loves her ; then when they reunite he touches her face ; and then when he is about to die he touches her again, proving he is a sweet and gentle guy. Compare when Gaston enters her house , chasing her, being too close, trying to imprison her , being brute , Beast was always giving her a space , not being invasive , letting Belle to be the leader when they go to the Ballroom, she put his hand on her waist and putting herself closer to him, the Beast was SHOCKED and it was SO CUTE!
What happens in the remake???
Just dancing and barely looking at each other, no touching, no putting closer to one another....when Belle says her father is in trouble, the Beast just says "no time to waste"....
And many people saying that The Enchanted Christmas was bad, compared to this remake, IT WAS A MASTERPIECE 😁😁😁😁

Page O’Hara brought so much dimension, warmth, and personality to the character with just her voice. Emma Watson’s two dimensional interpretation just fell completely flat.
I think the musical is the perfect extension of the animated movie. They had such as incredible blueprint for a live action movie and just squandered it.
I hate the live action. Belle is not likeable and neither is Beast. I don’t buy their supposed “chemistry” at all.

So, like CATS 2019: all that Disney had to do was...
1. Hire a makeup artist to have Dan Stevens wear a Beast costume w/practical makeup (VS the CGI mo-cap)
2. Have these actors perform a theatrical version of Disney's own stage musical. (This second one is also a criticism of TLK 2019, where Disney had a TONY-AWARD WINNING musical w/a Nala-centered song that *Beyonce* would have knocked out of the park--seriously: you have BEYONCE KNOWLES, and you don't give her "Shadowland"!?)
You know why the stage version was even better?, linda Wolverton who wrote the Beauty and the Beast screenplay was also involve in the stage version, so the script even get better on stage . I stink everything would have been different if Linda would have written the script for this remake

I think Dan was great choice for the role, but Cgi Beast was really horrible & unnatural (its not his fault). 2014 French film version of the tale has Vincent Cassel wearing FULL BEAST COSTUME (except face) and to this date its the most handsome looking on-screen Beast.
The entire relationship of remake Belle and Beast feels very awkward and cold, almost like they don't want to be near each other. Unlike animated Belle and Beast where they're warm, sweet and close.

As soon as I heard Emma Watson was playing Belle, I lost hope it was going to be good because I felt it was such a terrible casting choice. Belle was always my favorite princess because of exactly what you said. She's charming, smart, witty and polite at the same time while being a strong person. Almost everything that came out of Emma's mouth or her facial expressions didn't make me think I was looking at Belle, but it did make me think I was watching Emma Watson playing herself. Paige O'Hara had such a wonderful, warm voice where you could hear her smiling when she spoke certain lines or was singing. Even seeing a live person on the screen, Emma just didn't have that kind of presence and warmth.
I watched it and it amazed me how much they took from the original film, yet removed or changed the most important scenes where the two connect. The library was the part where I just stopped trying to force myself to find a way to enjoy it. That was such a pivotal moment where the beast actually wanted to do something nice for Belle and they butchered it and made him so unlikeable.
Also, the dress was awful. I'll leave it at that haha.
I blame Steve Kloves for how Emma Watson turned out as an actress. The only movie to really adapt book Hermione was Harry Potter and the Philosopher'shilosopher's Stone. And I thought Emma Watson did a great job. of the main kids, she gave the best performance. In fact, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is her best performance to date. She's bossy, condescending, and arrogant. You can see why two months into the school year she doesn't have any friends. Probably my only complaint is how she tells Ron the spell to use when they're saving her from the troll (is the book, she's frozen in fear) and how Ron is the one who panics in the devil's snare as opposed to hermione in the books (I get that one a pass, since they removed Hermione's logic puzzle). Then, starting a movie two and solidifying in movie 3, Kloves apparently developed a real crush on Emma Watson because Hermione stops being Hermione and just starts being Emma Watson. She's she's poised, cool under pressure, speaks well, is self-assured, and always right. It's hard to blame Watson. If all your acting jobs are "be yourself," you don't really get to grow as an actor.
After philosopher's stone, I think her best performance as Meg March in the Little women movie. While I certainly prefer the Winona Ryder version of little women, I thought Emma Watson did a good job interpreting the character of Meg March.

I'd do what the animated movie did to find their Belle: grab a Broadway actress. My top picks were Samantha Barks and Katherine McNamara. Barks is a little old for the part but has an amazing voice and the look. McNamara would have been the perfect age (21 at the time) and she played Fredrika from A Little Night Music in the revival. If you're able to sing Sondheim on Broadway as a child, you've got chops.

Emmy did quite a good job playing a film version of Christine - and she would nail Belle, cuz Belle songs are much easier.
I looked upon you 2 mentioned... Katherine has Belle facial features, true, but Samantha Barks has nothing of it (and shes not old lol, she is the same age as Emma).
In all honesty I really don't like Emma Watson as an actress. She was great in the first 2 HP movies, but something in POA happened that made her so much more angry. After that I felt like the only emotion she could truly portray on screen is anger/frustration. If she's not angry/frustrated it just seems like she's bottling it in. It's kind of like Kristen Stewart only being able to be gloomy. Emma Watson is only really able to be angry.
you know what's the ironic part here? Kristen Stewart eventually grew to become a really good actress and Emma watson.... well let's say that may work.

There’s something else about this movie that rubs me the wrong way. Actually, there is a lot.
1. Gaston is actually making an attempt to be nice to her and Belle is giving no reason why she doesn’t like him. In the original, even though she is... tolerant of his obvious rudeness, she gives a reason why she doesn’t like him. “He’s rude and conceded...” and he makes fun of her father. Remake Gaston is attempting to be nice and even says he can change, but Belle says, and I quote, “No one can change that much.” Hello, Belle 🤦🏾♀️!!! You fell in love with a jerk of a beast that hardly showed any feeling towards you and you barely connected with! Ugh!!! It’s so annoying. Gaston looks favorable in this scenario and she didn’t even witness his ugly transformation into being evil Gaston.
2. In the animated movie, when Belle said “I love you” to Beast, the last pedal hadn’t fallen yet. That was the conditions of the curse! In the remake, the last pedal had fallen long before Belle even said “I love you.” It’s really quite annoying. Of course there is a thing as never too late, but that was the conditions of the curse! The last pedal falls, that’s it! The last pedal falls, it’s too late! And the enchantress just changing her mind when she heard Belle say “I love you” even though the last pedal had already fallen long ago, is just an insult to everything the movie was supposed to be about!
Gosh I hate this movie. I had such high hopes because Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie. And this modernization of it has destroyed it!
You brought up two more of my biggest irritations with this movie.
Gaston was totally mishandled. By trying to give him more depth they just made him sympathetic. He was even nice to Maurice for a while too (before he suddenly with no explanation decided to feed him to wolves). He wasn’t a good villain.
And the stupid petal falling and Enchantress situation. Ugg. There were no consequences for them not meeting the conditions of the curse. She just decided to let them off the hook. It’s so stupid.
I agree. For the movie to work, we need to dislike Gaston instead of feel like he's a poor misunderstood guy who really just needs a little understanding to help him not be so rough around the edges. Gaston was a little oafish in this movie, but not the kind of guy you'd automatically dismiss. 1991 Gaston is clearly chauvinistic and completely worships himself, so every woman watching the movie is thinking, "Belle could definitely do better!" You also see him gradually sink lower and lower. When we see him in the first scene, he's standing in the shadows with a gun, clearly not a first impression that the "good guy" in a movie would make. Then he sets up a wedding after Belle has made it clear she's not interested. He's constantly hitting Lefou. It's easy to believe he would plot against someone to get what he wants, so when he threatens to have Maurice committed or rides off to kill the Beast, it's something that seems normal for Gaston to do because he's already proven that he's a jerk. In the remake, Gaston just decides halfway through the movie that he's bored or something and doesn't want us to like him anymore, so he's had it with Maurice. Where did this change of heart/mind come from?
I don’t mind Emma Watson, but she squandered any chance this movie had to be good by inserting her own personal agenda into it. She refused to wear a corset to be accurate to the period and she’s also the reason Belles dress is so god awful in the design. I was SO EXCITED to see a real life Belle dress but the one they came up with us so blah. I mean look at the Cinderella dress, we could have had something like that! I don’t get that casting choice at all.

Jfc, the library scene in the remake made me cringe so much. In the 1991 movie, you have him showing her the library because he wants to do something nice for her, he looks so smitten, full of love and excitement as he stares at her surprised face, despite him not knowing how to properly read (a tiny detail in Human Again that I really love because it shows him in a vulnerable position, willing to learn, which, at the same time, serves as a contrast between the Beast and Gaston). In the 2017 remake, he's a condescending asshole who only showcases his library because he doesn't like Belle's favorite book. It lacks emotion and a narrative purpose.
The remake has been annoying me for awhile. The animated version is one of my favorite Disney movies, and it drives me crazy when people nitpick “plot holes” and say it “glorifies Stockholm Syndrome.”
I think this live action version shows a real case of Stockholm syndrome, because Emma didn't 'make an agreement with the Beast as in the original and the CGI Beast is more a jerk in this version , even before she tried to scape, why she stayed with this year?, why she came back with the Beast after he saved her form the wolves if she was trying to escape ????

The live action was such a let down. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney princess movie I was obsessed with it when I was little to the point where my siblings hated the movie because I would watch it three times in a row in one day lol. And Emma Watson is my favorite actress because of Harry Potter. So when they announced that my fave actress will be playing my fave princess I was beyond excited and went in with such high expectations. And I came out of the theater so disappointed. 😭 I agree she didn’t portray belle well she didn’t show much emotion and the writing overall was just not good. And it sucks because there was so much potential but the work for it just wasn’t put in. 😭
So many of Emma Watson's expressions toward the Beast looked like contempt and disgust ... it was difficult to get beyond the sneering which seemed so out of character for Belle's typically polite manner.

The main change that would've work for the live action version on the build up to the library scene. Like he would talk about wanting to seeing a play again then suggests a romance novel like some "adventure romance or something" bell is all like "I never read that." Then beast goes through rapid fire book and she has read none. And beast smiles genuinely leading the way to the library. Boom chemistry!

I agree with you, but I will just add some that bothered me the most (although list can be endless)
1. Giving Adam cruel father backstory - whats the point of this tale anymore, cuz 'he learned how to behave bad' ?!?!? Its not anymore Adams fault, not his change from evil-to-good, just blame the cruel king!!!
2. Magical book - Beast openly says how 'he couldn't find place for creature like him' - why he didn't use that book to seek for help???
3. Horrible overdose of CGI during Be Our Guest - my eyes were bleeding + Emmas stationary pose
4. Dan not wearing a full Beast costume - thats why everything looked so awkward
5. Emma, Emma & just Emma - terrible acting, terrible singing, terrible outfits, constant anger in 85% scenes - why Disney didn't hire Anne Hathaway or Emmy Rossum?!?!? JUST WHY?!?!?
Emmy Rossum??? sorry but I completely disagree on this one , she acted in the worst Live action version of an anime: Dragon Ball Evolution , she acted there as one of my favorite anime characters called Bulma , she did it HORRIBLE!

When I saw the live-action remake, I left feeling confused. This is my favorite thing, and there’s more of it, so shouldn’t I love it? Beauty and The Beast is my favourite animated Disney movie of all time, no contest, so the remake is heartbreaking to me. I knew Emma Watson was miscast the instance I learned she was going to play Belle, and the way they ruined her's and Beast's characters is really sad. I cry everytime I watch Beauty and The Beast because it's so beautiful. The remake just makes me upset and annoyed.

12:50 shows part of the problem. “I still have not seen Emma look at all like she cares about the beast.” She’s not Belle. She’s just being Emma. I went to an advanced showing, and the reaction at the end was that Hermione just phoned it in.
Hands down, the change that pisses me off the most is when we see Belle or Emma. When we see Belle, as in the real one, the animated one, she’s primping and preening and looks so excited to be wearing something so fancy. Emma? Just standing there, looking like she doesn’t care to be there. And Emma’s statement about not enough time to tell the love story? BITCH, PLEASE. This remake was LONGER. If the animated one could sell us the love story in less time, this one had MORE than enough!! And a dance scene can’t work to sell the love story if there’s no chemistry earlier.
The library change may be one of the most infuriating aspect of the live action one. REAL Beast, aka the animated one, gave her the library because he wanted to do something kind for her. The imposter Beast was just flexing and gave her something because he clearly didn’t care about it.
The decision to have them both be “smart” came across more like someone had a problem with a girl being the smart one.
They also actually gave the villagers reasons to hate her, like how she was stomping over where the girls were trying to do their laundry, forcing the girls to have to pick their stuff up so she doesn’t step on the clothing they just washed, or her deciding to take over the entire town’s entire water supply to do her own laundry when the rest of them shared. She was inconsiderate toward anyone else, just an absolute snot.
Beast had the magic book and didn't use it to send Belle to her father? Wow Disney! Way to bring in an element from the ancient tale and then ignore it. 🙄
They changed Hermione’s character in the later books to make her better than Ron (even though in the books he is smart in other ways then her, but the movies made him an idiot), and in this I think they changed Belle to make her more of a “I’m a strong independent woman” type, but that’s not how it should be. Belle doesn’t need anyone, true, but strength isn’t always just about being outspoken and loud. Animated Belle was stronger, IMO, than live action. Same for the Beast.

The Beast never even admitted he had feelings for her really. And she never really showed she cared until the very end. I hated the changes they made to the scene where they are getting ready for the dance. In the animated one, he wants to confess and when asked if he cares about her, he says "more than anything". In the remake, Lumiere is pushing him to confess and is calling her the one, the Beast says "I don't know if she is the one or if there even is the one". He doesn't even really acknowledge that he likes her the same way in the remake. And then the balcony scene, when he asks if she could be happy there with him and instead of saying "yes", like the animated version, she basically says she could never really be happy if she isn't free...so basically, "no, I'm not happy and I never will be".
I completely agree with everything you said in this video, thank you. I absolutely hate the remake, they completely destroyed the romance! They turned the beast into such a jerk! And it makes no logical sense that he is so mean and uninterested in her in the beginning because he should know that this is his last chance to be human again so he should at least try to be nice to her like in the original when he at least gave her a room and tried to be a gentleman in the dinner request scene. The new beast is just a selfish, obnoxious, stuck up jerk! And I absolutely hate that they changed the library scene from him giving it to her because he started to fall for her and wanted to do something nice for her to him belittling her taste in books and showing off his collection like an arrogant snob. This new beast makes even Gaston look like a better choice! And Emma's Belle is not much better, she is so unemotional and a Mary sue. God, I hate the remake!!!
The way the remake treats Gaston is so frustrating and confusing to me. I presume they wanted to tone down his douchbagary and give him a reason to be... I'm actually not really sure what aspect of him they wanted to justify by giving him a war background and ptsd. He is not particularly violent or agressive in the first half of the movie (as far as i remember) and even then he goes from 0 to murder in seconds, unlike his animated conterpart from who encouriging the mob wasn't far fetched at all. And not that he didn't have reason why he was the way he was in the animated movie. He is the peak of masculinity in the eyes of this provincial town, he is constantly put on a pedestal 24/7 it's no wonder he is so full of himself and feels entitled to everything he ever wanted. But the remake doesn't frame Gaston in this way. He is pursuing Belle but in a ... less jerky way? He tries to appeal to her interests to win her over without directly dismissing or infantalising her for it, I might not remember this correnctly but he asks for a dinner, implying he wants to know her or wants her to know him. Even if he was being sly I don't think they portray that well enough here. He seems much more genuine about his feelings towards Belle. My gut reaction was that he is genuinly smitten by her he just too caught up in the cultural conventions and traditions, and probably his own package from the war, to properly evaluate his actions let alone realise why Belle's not into him. Not to mention if you give a character something in the league of ptsd you ought have some folk have instatly a little bit sympathy towards him even if you play it up for laughs. My point is I was hoping... no... I was DESPERATE to have this movie finally having the guts to properly reimagine the original stories and put them into a different perspective. For me the moment when Gaston decides to kill Maurice and leaves Lefoue behind is almost a "Dany was ALWAYS MAD" moment. I wasn't feeling "satisfaction" when they killed him off in the end I was utterly disappointed that after half a movie where they were unintentionally framing Gaston to be a more layered character than it meets the eye and after the other half of the movie where i was crossing my fingers to have the story end in a different way (something like he realises the errors of his ways, gives up his murder plot, apologizes to Belle, the Beast, Maurice and Lefou but is not forgiven or he doesn't even wants forgivness cause he doesn't forgive himself and then leaves to journey to become a better person, or idk something!?) they still end on the EXACT SAME NOTE as the original does just with a sligthly less consistant vilain who wasn't even a proper vilain in the first half of the movie and who had a lingering potential to be much more than a vilain who meets his much deserved end. They screw literally EVERYONE up in this remake.
I mean you have like a half written commentary on the effect of social norms in the animated movie with Gaston representing a stereotypical and caricature of the masculine man's ideal whose is ego is created and reinforced by society and you have Belle being the peak of femiminity with being kind, gently, polite and ("most importantly") beautiful but she won't put up being subjugated. I refuse to believe that they didn't thought about this. They wrote the Beast to be a product of his father's uprbringing, whose being an aristocrate would probably raise his child to see himself above most of society and adhere ot social norms otherwise they would be ripped from their privileges. You get a more pronounced reason for the Beast's behaviour in telling the Enchantress off in her need and a perfect contrast to Gaston in the remake whose not a nobleman (as far as we know) yet he is still put on a pedestal by society beause he adheres to social ideals the rest of the men in the town do not or cannot. Both of them being victims, to some capacity, to social norms and the expectations it put on them, corrupting both of them, putting them in a dire need to have a humbling moment. Beast's humbling moment is with the Enchantress and Gaston's humbling moment would be the moment in the end when he realises he stands alone and wrong so many people. (just to note i still think the Enchantress goes a BIT overboard by cursing the entire castle and have their life be entirely dependant on the Beast's character development and have the treat of death for them)
... or maybe i just read too much into it.
Awesome insights, I completely agree. They had an opportunity to make a new and interesting story from an old (and perfect) classic, and they missed the mark in every way.

When you played the wound-cleaning scenes one after the other, I noticed something else that bugs me in the remake. The way Watson delivers the final line in the argument is all wrong, imo. She doesn't sound assertive and confident, but shrill and desperate. She's not arguing anymore, but pleading. It changes the whole tone of the argument - it's not a conversation between equals like in the animated movie but a power struggle, and she lost. In this light her next action, when she reaches for the Beast but hesitates and pulls her hand back, looks like fear. Like she's genuinely scared he might hurt her if she makes the wrong move. In the animated movie this scene shows that Belle and the Beast are equals, and that there's already a trust between them, as he allows her to touch his wounds and she does so without fear or hesitation even after they just argued. She knows he won't lash out at her. In the live-action version Belle ends up looking weak and afraid, while he gets his way.

The live-action remakes (apart from Cinderella which is perfect) all suffer from the same problem; they lack heart and soul.
Emma Watson made this movie bad to watch, she is not a good actress and it's clearly shown here. She can't emote properly and she has the same problems in Perks of Being a Wallflower where she doesn't emote well; there is a reason why people can't see her as anything other than Hermione Granger and that is because she plays herself in every role. The writing is terrible and I truly wonder how the writing staff got their jobs because they do a terrible job of trying to convince us this is a love story. Where is the romance? The director did a terrible job of directing his actors because I don't see any romance between them, I don't see any forlorn looks from the characters when they decide to leave each other like we did in the animated version, no looks of curiosity or intrigue and certainly no chemistry.
She wasn't even that good as Hermine. Everyone who read the books would see that since the Second movie it all went downhill.

I’m so glad that someone loves the Cinderella live action too! I feel like because it was one of the first live actions Disney did they put actual effort into executing it and adding something new without making it feel like a completely different story. They gave the prince an actual personality, the visuals were gorgeous and Cinderella’s character was true to the original and Lily James and Richard Madden had extremely good chemistry together. Sorry for the rant, i just love that movie and I feel like it’s extremely underrated, compared to other live actions.
To be fair, acting stiff and stilted on the balcony IS a carryover of their dancing chemistry

The movie was one giant wasted opportunity and it's really a shame. There are areas in the film where you can see a genuine effort was made, but that didn't really carry throughout. It could have been so much better. With the budget they had, there's no excuse. And I HATED that addition of the magic book. It added literally nothing to the story.
Part of the reason why the chemistry is off is Emma Watson was a bad casting decision because of her lack of acting skills (plus she can't sing.) Though, I'm sure it's not easy to convey emotion or affection when you're acting opposite of someone in CGI getup. It's just all weird.

The way I look at Belle in the animated movie is that (believe it or not) she is VERY close to being a perfect person. The only "mistake" she really makes in the entire movie is that she goes to the west wing even though she was told not to by the Beast and the servants try to warn her away. But aside from that, she really has no flaws, and yet she is still written very well and is still believable. Disney keeps trying to make "perfect" characters, especially female characters that have no flaws (live action Belle and Mulan jump to mind) that end up being boring. But animated Belle was nearly flawless and she was wonderful!
I love your detailed comparison between these two movies on when and where the love story breaks waaay too much in the remake, compared to the extravagant love story production of the animated movie. Man, I remember feeling extremely empty and dissatisfied and bored (and actually horrified in a disappointing way with that stupid teleportation book scene) when watching the remakes in premiere. Meanwhile, the animated version is simply timeless, and aged like fine wine.

I don’t really like this beast’s design overall and he isn’t likable at all in the live action version. And Emma Watson felt nothing like Belle. Belle just seemed kinda aggressive and stuck up in the live action opposed to assertive and compassionate like in the animated classic.
Live action Beast did not deserve his "Evermore" in the way Animated Beast deserved that big ROAR.
And at the same time, Evermore as a song is the only thing I really like from the live action.
And I think technically Evermore is from the Broadway show originally, if I remember

You are absolutely right! I love to watch videos like yours because they show more and more flaws in that boring remake. Another thing that bothered me is that they made Gaston more likable in the remake and the beast less likable, when in the original is the other way around! In the remake, Gaston has some kind of trauma from war, so he has a reason to behave like that, I guess they add this in the story for comedy purposes but just made us, the audience, understand him a bit more and actually feel sorry for him...but the beast just made me feel angry hahahah, he is a jerk in the remake, like you brilliantly pointed out.

I say this about (almost) every Disney live action remake, they're just taking the original movies and sucking the life and heart out of them. The passion is just gone. These are all perfect examples of that.

Can I also say that as a costumer and seamstress myself, I could feel my heart stop for a second when I saw Belle throw the “yellow” dress on the dirt ground! Don’t get me started on the dress that’s a rant for another comment!

Let's be honest Emma Watson just ruined the movie completely and it feels like you're watching a movie about Emma Watson and not Belle there's so many people who could have been better don't get me wrong at first I was excited that Emma Watson was playing but now after seeing the movie I wish it was someone else I feel like it was a big mistake considering she had so much influence over the movie that just made it worse like Emma Watson said that she really likes Belle and yet it felt like she didn't really understand the character 😅 and Emma Watson try to push her beliefs and other things on to Bell which just made her worse
At the part beginning at 7:54, I had to gasp and say, "Wait... so what you just described... On top of everything else... this version of Belle is also a manic pixie dream girl?! Seriously?!" Well, a low-energy pixie dream girl, I guess. *Sigh.*
Library scene is so important so short bit it shows that they are starting to develop connection that there is something new being born between them new important feeling them falling slowly for each other him having the need to give her something precious to her in order to make her smile and for her to see that he actually cares for what is important to her as well the mirror scene they both develop a healthy bond after he saves her from that moment she is no longer a prisioner of his there is no Stockholm sindrom its just to equals forming a bond and connection slowly which turns into love not forcefully while the movie misses the point and characters miss most of the behaviour relationship in movie feels toxic Beast doesn't change he stays the same Belle just goes after him trying hard to connect with him while he just doesn't care there is no love its just ok the story is this we just must follow the skript no love connection needed idk it just feels dry

Very good Analysis! I was sooooo disappointed with this remake. The animated version is my favorite Disney movie so to see practically no romance between the characters was beyond disappointing. So happy I’m not the only one who loves that little scene when he lets her go.
Honestly, the TV and Film industries have no concept of chemistry anymore. But then again, neither do most audiences. So many people attribute the charimsa of one actor to chemistry in a pair. Anytime I see genuine on-screen chemistry these days, I'm usually convinced it's a coincidence.
It boggles my mind, that in these live action remakes the two decades old cartoon characters communicate so much more emotion and depth than the living human beings or, god forbid, the CGI characters. One of the forgotten benefits of traditional animation is how much you can express through the simple lines of face or subtle body language when it is animated well.
Make up artists can do so much, and create such imaginative and convincing creatures there is no reason why the Beast had to be CGI. I fully believe that a good make up artists could have created an even more convincing and realistic Beast that Dan Stevens could have acted under and a lot of the problems would have been solved by having them be in the same room and acting together.
Aside from the awful dress, the LA dance scene drove me nuts because Belle and Beast spend so much of the dance physically separated from each other. Ballroom dancing is INCREDIBLY close and physically intimate, hence why It's often used as a stand in for a love/sex scene. In the animated dance, Belle and Beast are almost always touching (plus there's that sly grin Belle gives Beast when she places his hands on her. She making it clear she wants the contact) to the point that she rests her head on his chest and Beast literally gets cheered for it. That scene is the movie's Love Scene and everything about it reinforces that.
And then the Live Action version butchered it! It's been 4 yrs and I'm still angry! I want my money back!
In both the best relationships are between belle and her father. They both really care about each other.
