      This might sound dumb but I think a shot-gather video might help some people. I myself struggled early in my high school days gathering the ball effectively off a dribble, which totally limited my ability to drive and shoot. This video could be similar to your "feet pointed away from basket when shooting" video, just a demonstration of real-life examples so we get a detailed look at how the pros do it. Then you could probably show us counters such as fake-gathers + head-fakes that lead to easy layups.
      OK, I talked too much and am going to shut up now. :) Any content you release will be cool regardless. Cheers.

      It's not a real move or something that is taught or practiced. I hate for kids to see this and start doing it. It's exactly what you said...wasted movement. And gives a smart defender additional time to adjust. How do you even accomplish a move like this, with your back to the sideline, without stepping out? There are plenty of fundamentals in the game, but this ain't one.

Negative step is effective I seen lots of clips where Melo does couple of times in a game. If it helps your game do it, stop listening to those who says otherwise because maybe they just cant do it, and they jealous so they too dont want you to do it.

      Basketball is a dangerous sport. Jumping, sprinting, landing, stopping, changing directions is all dangerous.
      Repping this move out with good form will minimize the risk of it ending badly. Every hooper (hell, anyone playing any sport ever) is gonna make this move multiple times every game both onball and offball no matter if trying to or not. Might as well practice doing it properly.
      KD did the move badly biomechanically. Overstride + heel way too close to the floor. Him returning way too soon from his previous injury likely contributed as well.
      Dwight Powell did the move terribly biomechanically. Heel almost touched the floor. It looked like he had no clue what he was doing. If he had practiced the move I doubt he would have gotten hurt.

    • @JoseMaloof
      @JoseMaloof 2 роки тому +3

      I was about to mention this, this move is now being associated to all those achilles injuries. They need to further review this matter, as many players that pop their achilles happen while doing this neg step. I am not a specialist, but I would assume that the position with the knee completly extended and also bringing the heel to the ground causes a lot of strain/extension on the achilles, need to perform this move with less leg extension, so that the calf muscles also do some of the work not just a rebound effect from the achillies.

    Negative step never works against me. It just gives away the intentions in my opinion.
    It's nice to have several moves and maybe it'll work on most defenders.

    You negative step because you're not able to pivot off your right foot. Constantly using negative step instead of pivoting of your right foot to a stagger stance will create physiological imbalances

      Every person in every physical activity in the world ever uses some movement patterns more to one side than the other.
      Doesn't seem to be a huge problem for Lebron, Kobe, MJ, Steph, Doncic and Harden. Players use a permanent pivot for a reason and the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks if there are any.
      You negative step and split step the other way a lot while you're dribbling (hesitations to the right) and a lot off ball. So you're getting a lot of reps both ways.
      Should guitar players spend time playing flipped? Should tennis players practice playing with their weaker hand? Should Gordon Ramsey be cutting onions with his weaker hand? Might be fun, but time could be spent doing other more important things.

    It also takes takes away your first step. Secondly all these players doing the “Negative Step” are all right handed going left pushing off the right leg. Plus all these players rocking mids wondering why they are always hurting and tearing something.

    • @flossbee
      @flossbee Рік тому

      That's because these guys are exploding in the direction of their pivot foot. You have to push off your right leg going left if your left leg is your pivot foot. They could do the move going right but the right foot would need to be the pivot foot. The first step only really comes into play if you're leading in the direction of the "free foot" or the non-pivotted foot which is when an experienced player would unlikely use the negative step.

      @@flossbee Thank you going into further detail about what I originally said. Only a fool would negative step as a righty going right. Most of the examples are righties going left because if they didn’t it would be a travel. Kobe for example when going left doesn’t negative step.. he steps forward with his right leg shielding then explodes. Unless your Paul Pierce you chooses his pivots.

      I mean there are other moves you can use to go left. Jabbing sideways for example.
      But stepping backwards is the simplest and most explosive.

    This move is not a good move. It is really a crtossover step when you pivot on the wrong foot. A lot of times, players try this in a panic, especially when they catch the ball in a corner and the closeout is coming, and they ALWAYS get called gor steppinng out of bounds. And the old head Announcer goes, "you gotta get out of that negative step. What I teach instead is prior planning, the ability to pivot off either foot, so you can move forward left or right, depending on how the closeout is coming.
