I tried watching Frieren! Is this anime really as good as everyone says?
Frieren:Beyond Journey's End / Sousou No Frieren is an anime that surprised everyone who didn't already know about it from the manga with how crazy good it is. It follows Frieren with her party members Fern and Stark as they go on an adventure. Together they relive Frieren's old memories from her journey with her original party: Himmel, Eisen and Heite.
It's honestly such a rollercoaster of emotions watching it from start to end. It's taken the place as the highest rated anime on the internet and it looks like it's staying there. ANYWAY, here are my thoughts on it! Is Frieren really that good or is it overrated? I tried to keep this review / reaction as spoiler free as I could!

The scary part is…the studio who did the Frieren anime is notoriously known for never making a second season for anime.😱😭
What I really love about the anime is how good it is at showing the differences in perception between Frieren and practically everyone else. I don’t remember the exact episode, but at one point Frieren just declared they were going to stay in a town for 10 years. While Fern told her straight up they’re staying for a week at most. That the anime doesn’t make either of these statements sound absurd coming from each character is a credit to the creators for putting in the work to both characters, story and world building.
Frieren treats demons like a bug infestation; don't bother torturing or gloating, just get ride of them. Then there's the act of using their own method against them in a version of poetic justice. It's like she wants demons to feel small right before dying, but only if she doesn't have to waste extra time or energy in the process because they aren't worth it.
She does toy with that one that tried to cut her neck.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq It wasn't toying with. She was literally just using her standard anti-demon strategy that she's been using for centuries:
1) Keep your true power hidden (so they will underestimate you because they can't tell the difference)
2) Lure them into a position of weakness (in this case, tricking them into using the magic item against Frieren rather than using the army to wear her down enough to be defeated)
3) Finish the combat quickly and decisively (in this case, turning the magic item against its wielder as soon as she was able to do so)
As Frieren noted, if the army had continued the assault there may have been a risk of Frieren losing the battle of attrition. She won not because she was OP but because her enemy foolishly felt safe enough to take her on directly.
The demons of Frieren are the Uncanney Valley turned destructive. Demons use tricks and social traps to gain access to people and kill them. There is no reasoning with them, because they genuinely want the people to die.
Frieren looks down on and despises the demons because they absolutely are not deserving of a first chance, let alone a second chance. If you don't destroy them, they will destroy you and everyone around you. And they will use every possible trick and lie that can be conceived to achieve their desire.
I LOVE that this series straight up runs counter to so many other settings with humanoids that are just discriminated/persecuted/etc. It's not a question of racism, hatred, or disagreements, it's entirely about survival and protection against creatures that truly only want you dead.
(That's not to say that I dislike series with demons that you can be friends and family with. I love a lot of those!)

But your point still stands with slightly different details. She cut his arms to immediately disable his attack. Every other safe option would have let to more collateral damage. And she assumed the guards were still alive at that point.
The Demon King gave the Order 66 against all elves. It is poetic that an elf would be part of the hero party that defeated him.
And the demons' hiding in fear of Himmel gave her freedom to explore the world on her own accord for 50 years that most of them forgot about Frieren the Slayer in the hero party.

I love Frieren because it is a simple anime that takes place after the adventure is done. I love stories that tell what happened to the adventurers after the journey is done.
What is good with Frieren is that it's not boring. Usually, anime that happens after the journey is done -just like manga-, are amazing at first, but quickly become pretty boring. But Frieren doesn't
I went into Frieren with no expectations outside of hearing that it’s very good early on into the shows run. So when I started watching I was immediately entranced by the relaxed story and music, and surprised by how amazing the animation was at all times. Frieren quickly became one of my favourite animes and I started collecting the manga so that I can relive and continue Frieren’s journey
It feels like someone watched lord of the rings recently and wanted to make a similar anime about what happens after the ring is destroyed. xD
It's one of a kind anime that takes place after the heroes defeat the Demon King and go their separate ways when the journey is over. It's worth the watch 10/10

A personal fav of mine was Firefighter Daigo: Resucer in Orange, but just because I relate so much to it. I know it's not popular, and I do kind of put the other ahead of this one, but it really would be nice for another season...

Frieren was a wonderful and relaxing anime from Start to finish. Her obsession with magic grimoire and her weaknesses with treasure chest were relatable and funny. I would love to see a video on your take on the Apothecary Diaries Wolfy. Thank you for the helpful information about getting some Japanese merch with ease.
I absolutely love this anime. It's wholesome, funny, has some action that's really great, and it's overall a adventure all on it's own. I won't spoil anything but I do agree with the message of this anime. And of course who can't forget all those times Frieren gets stuck by a mimic.

Edit: I really love allot of the characters in the anime, manly Ubel because she has such an interesting back story and I really want to know more about her, but the chemiatry between Fern and Stark is just the perfect amount of opposite that they might make it together

The best part is how the story is set in post “story” and that the main character is the elf that has no idea about how humans are. Instead of that character being a side character
It's actually very similar to the story of legolas from lord of the rings, but with dwarves instead of humans. It is probably true with humans too, but Gimli becomes something like a brother to him. =3 Heaven is basically a location you can go to in that world. It's where frodo went to heal from his adventure immediately, but once you get there you can never leave. Elves live forever, but everything else dies eventually. So he goes there with him. I think it took like 100 years for Gimli to finally die cuz dwarves do live for like 300 - 1000 years.
The reason elves hate dwarves to begin with is because a lot of them joined Sauron. Until the descendant of all dwarves was murdered and desecrated by the leader of Sauron's Dwarves. His son spent 3 days in the throne room alone. On the 4th day he made the biggest united army dwarves ever made to kill them for good.

When I first heard of this show I just thought it would be just another fantasy anime because people kept saying how foolish Frieren was when she kept opening up mimic chests. It wasn’t until I saw a clip on youtube that was titled something like “Deep dub voice Frieren hits differently” and I saw this dramatic scene with Frieren herself. It was such a powerful moment from the show with zero context that completely sold the show for me. I too binged watched it as well and have caught myself rewatching it again because a lot of the newer shows coming out just don’t compare to this work of art.
It's also so good at portraying the "what now?" feeling you get after accomplishing a big milestone in your life too! Life doesn't end after your big problem, moving on after regrets and losses is something the show does really well!

The end of episode ten was 11 out of 10 brutal. Just WOW!
I binged watched it like a few months after the 1st season completed. I was amazed on how good this otherworldly anime is. The story, the world building and a bit of character development are all S tiers. Additionally, Im a graduating student so watching what would happen after a journey ends; I learned there would be alot more adventures and memories to make and reminisce the good times you had with your old friends.

Wolfychu i feel like you should talk about Doctor Stone it's a good anime. A modern civilization suddenly petrified and set basically back to The Stone age and one genius that Revived from petropication is trying to bring back the people from the old world and technology.
i recon it would be funny if you did a Jujutsu Kaisen video, i think the contrast between adorable wolf character and balls to the wall fight going on in the background would be funny

Frieren is one of those anime shows where you feel re-imbursed with the storyline and how she has so many adventure memories with her past party members while being alive for 1000+ years. I really did enjoy watching it tbh, it's quite interesting to see where Frieren would go after that and learning more about humans. 🧝🏻♀️🧙🏻♀️

in my honest opinion, Sou sou no Frieren has that magic spark that other fantasy anime doesn't have. Not to mention it's soundtracks. Listening to it felt like walking to a village filled with villagers, adventurers or other mythical creatures. I've rewatched it twice now and it never fails to impress me. Especially frieren's character, fern and stark. it is one of those animes where the protagonist is overpowered yet she still shows vulnerability unlike other op protagonist, moments such as fighting herself in the dungeon or not being able to handle a dragon or not being able to handle curses, it is a well balanced anime
That's a really interesting premise, an immortal being wrestling with not her temporal existence but everyone else's...

If you liked this trope of starting a story after the main story ends I'd recommend Endro! (literally short for End Roll) It's also a fantasy story that occurs after defeating the Demon Lord, but it's a fluffy slice-of-life comedy instead of shonen.

Being an Oldtaku (I'm 51, yes, 51) this show hit me so hard. I felt for Frieren because, as you get older, you see the exact same mistakes she made reflected back at you. Time really does come for all of us and that's what made the show bittersweet, how she has to continue living while those she travels with pass on. It was a joy and a pain to watch. I started it the second week it was out and definitely was not expecting the stakes being constantly upped (the Demon Arc and then the Magical Exam Arc). I tell everyone who will listen to give the show a watch because it was just that good.

I am so excited than ever.. this became one of my top favorite and it's been a while since I had one!! Everything about Frieren is so good animation, soundtrack, character design and storytelling
I would love to see more of these types of videos as well as your storytimes, but, if possible, do anime that is currently airing when the video comes out. Yes, it’s sad when your binging a show and there aren’t any episodes left for you to watch, but, in my opinion, there are a few feelings in the world that top watching an anime as episodes are being added
Edit: after watching the series, I would like to say that my request to see upcoming anime was fulfilled, as there will probably be a season 2. I would love to see more videos like this in the future

I watched it weekly in sub. I actually want to do a compare between the sub and dub, so I really do plan to rewatch it soon. Want to finish the anime from winter 2024 first. Got about... 7 to 10 left. So around next week.

BOOM, not a minute in, and Wolfy has already stated the reason this was my first manga. Just happened to pass my view, read the description, saw it started after the demon king was defeated, and gave it a read. I don't remember why I read it after that, but before long, I was getting off work and pulling out my phone to read another chapter.
Yes, after over ten YEARS of watching anime, Frieren was my very FIRST manga. I recall when I was getting close to running out of chapters, it was in the Golden City Arc, and I didn't know how I was going to handle a cliffhanger. I ended at chapter 92 in May 2022.
I was extiatic about the anime after it was announced later in September, subsequently waiting for a full year for the premiere. Frieren was my first manga, my first manga to anime, and my first weekly anime (watching eps as they release).
I had to hold myself back from rereading it too many times to count, but after the final episode finished, I walked over to my bookshelf, grabbed the volume the episode left off on, and continued reading from chapter 61. I am now caught up to the end of volume 13, chapter 127. Got another intense arc coming. Gonna be fantastic. So very much looking forward.
Bite down on your pride, Madhouse, and announce season 2 already.

I LOVE Frieren!!! Almost every other episode I was bawling! It really shows off different things that, I myself, am absolutely afraid of...being alone, forgotten, outliving others, and so much more. Her words sometimes hit me so hard, that I had to take several days to recover from it. I cannot wait for the next season, I hope it has the same spunk, attitude, feeling, including the art/animation of it all. I'm so excited!!!

Onto the main topic, while I've yet to finish it myself, Frieren has been quite the remarkable show in it's design. The characters are fun, story is interesting and compelling, and overall a fun adventure to take on~.

I binged all of season 1 since all episodes were available and i needed to fill in slots as certain anime hadn't come onto my daily/weekly radar yet to add to my watching list. Its pretty good, not top 5 or 10 but definitely worth watching. Maybe i'll buy season 1 physically to support it as i watched it on aniwave. Nice to see Wolfy talk more anime :)
I've watched the first 10 or so episodes. I think its good. Yes, its been done before, but I love the 'after the adventure' trope. And I love the idea of following from the perspective of someone who lives 1000's of years. Its common to see long lived races in anime or fantasy, but its seldom we see exactly what that means, how they perceive time. And I love how we see that, as time goes on, how much those 10 years of adventuring that Frieren though so little of at the time affected her.
If you require straight up cozy feels, Yuru Camp dropped season 3.

I think Frieren is up there with shows like Arcane in my book. The fact that its able to weave so many things into one package is why I love it so much, also the hero character Himmel is honestly the best interpretation of a hero ive seen. Do yourself a favor and watch it, also love the video great exposition of the show!

I only recently started Frieren, and here I was thinking The Apothecary Diaries was the *chef's kiss*... I am enjoying Frieren a lot too! But I'm still in the early episodes n.n;
I hope she'll bring a video about Mashle next. I'd love to see her opinion on it. It's a nice subversion of a classic fantasy anime. As for me, I'll definitely give this anime a check.

I have seen bits and pieces of this anime, it is a interesting title for sure. I don't know if you will see this Wolfychu, but I wanted to mentioned the names of two animes I happened to enjoy years ago. Sadly they are not magical ones, but they are still good titles in my opinion . The first title is called Angelic Layer and the second is called Kaleido star, which has a second season. Anyway I want to thank you for telling us about this store where we can get some merch normally found only in Japan. ^^ thank you very much, and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
The series has become a phenomenon in Japan, with parents getting their kids to do chores & homework because "It's what the hero Himmel would do." My suspicious are that they are waiting until they have as much of the same production team locked in before announcing the next season, but I do hope they will make said announcement before Summer.
I started watching anime as a kid back in the 60's with shows like "Wonder 3," "Astro Boy," and "Jungle Emperor Leo (Kimba in the US)." I bring this up to lend sufficient gravitas when I say that Frieren isn't just my anime of the year, or of the decade. It's become my favorite series of all time. Meanwhile, since it looks like you watched it, how about a similar video on the other amazing series from Fall/Winter, _The Apothecary Diaries?_ Maomao is a delightful little gremlin.
This anime was so much fun! I love all the characters and the animation in this is really exciting in the action scenes. I'm so excited to see how the characters will grow in the next season.
for the first 6 ish episodes i cried at least once per episode, the later episodes were ok too but they didn't focus so much on emotions. it slows down a bit towards the end before peaking again but i don't mid, since all the characters are so good

I definitely have seen this a lot going around. I can tell it's quite popular because of how it took place at the end of something and showing how much the life of an elf is vastly different from the rest because everything changes and companions grow old. I think it's popular because of this kind of sad drama of seeing things change dramatically from what you once know and seeing once close companions grow old. I like fantasy stories and definitely like (pretty and alluring) elves, but I'm not sure if I can get into this due to the drama.

Here's my opinion : So far, I have now watched the first 4 episodes of Frieren.
The story's so great with her new journey alongside her apprentice Fern, and Frieren gets to enjoy the many good things that are happening in the world.

frieren is one of those shows that reminds me that my time in this world is precious and that i shouldn't just let the days fly by. I should appreciate what I have and strive to achieve more within this limited time frame.

I finished it last week and yeah it was amazing, l've never really seen a show where the characters are in one location for week or months at a time whether it be to help someone or cause they cannot proceed. I love when she says a comment like "I think I'll stay for a decade" But Fern wont let her (>▽

I really enjoyed Frieren. The world building and pacing is nearly perfect, the music is so good, and the characters all stand out and feel so alive! On top of that, the anime never loses sight of its premise, and flows so naturally as it progresses. The awkwardness of the characters to one another feel so real too! It really captures time and humanity in such a warm and charming light.
