Lion King 2019 is a faithful update of the 1994 original cartoon, with a photo-real look. It's also terrible. Here's why.

They have to wear out all their original animated features first. I hear they're waiting to make a live action/CGI Snow White for the very last since it was Disney's first animated feature, kind of as a bookend to the whole remake effort. Ah, but then what legacy will they rape? Guess it'll be time to see what's there to plunder in the new toys they got from Fox.

I didn't notice any scene in the remake that wasn't already in the original, but I did notice a ton of scenes that they cut out for the remake. Like Timon dressing in drag and doing the hula. Or the "past can hurt" scene. I feel like there were a lot more scenes with Rafiki in the original in general, but barely any in the remake. "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" was missing, which made me sad as that's one of my favorite comedic scenes in the movie. Scar just looks like a sad and dying lion, and he doesnt have his sassy attitude. They chose to cut important lines: "it doesnt matter, it's in the past. The past sometimes hurts." (rafiki). "you have forgotten yourself, therefore you have forgotten me" (mufasa). And the famous nala and simba song that we should call "can you feel the love this afternoon". My biggest issue with these remakes:
They will never be as good as the originals. This is not because they don’t have any virtue, but because they have a standard to live up to that will never be reached. Why waste your time tainting a story with cheap retellings and strained repeats of dialogue???

Live-action and photorealism can still make great use of colour and be all bright and vibrant. To use a musical example for comparison, look at something like La La Land. That film uses vibrant splashes of colour all over the place, especially in clothes and lighting, to give it a unique, almost fantasy dream-like feel. But it's all too common for films trying for some kind of 'realistic' look to use colour-grading that sucks most of the energy and life out of it, which you don't really want in a fun, feelgood Disney musical.

As a counterpoint to the lack of expression, I thought of the Queen in Brave when she turns into a bear. One of my favourite things in that movie is how she looks like a bear, but with these animated expressions and gestures, but when she turns more like a real bear, she goes kind of dead-eyed, like *she* is not all there. It was great way to show what she was experiencing. It seems to me like in the Lion King, they opted to stick strictly with the latter, and yeah, it definitely comes out flat - like the characters as people aren't entirely there. It's made even more stupid by fact that real animals can definitely show quite a good range of expression...

i dont think you will like animals standing on top of each other and singing.... peoples dont know what they want.. they will complain no matter what it is they always think they want something else... i am pretty sure they will find something else to complain even if they didnt go for realism... imagine a lion making a sad face and crying tears... it feels wrong

@@FruityHachi there's always one smart ass in the room, well Mr smart ass, Kimba: The white Lion and The Lion King are two DIFFERENT films, similar stories yes but different movies, we are here discussing the disaster that is the new live action version of The Lion King; when I say I prefer the original, why in the hell would you think Kimba when we are in fact talking The Lion King, simple, because you sir are a smart ass and nobody likes a smart ass.

the lion king is straight-up plagiarism of kimba the white lion, go watch scene by scene
they are NOT two "different" films, all iconic scenes in the lion king were ripped off of kimba the white lion, all the characters too

@@FruityHachi look i know the story is plagiarized but that doesn't take away from the animators' and voice actors' amazing hard work that definitely payed off.

I'd rather watch the original again and again than spend my money on some Disney stunt to make more money.
