The trouble is nearly 100% of the time these kids are already coming from a less-than-stellar home life.
They generally also live in areas where it can be a situation of joining the local gang or die or have your family threatened.
They are already so damaged psychologically from abuse from inside or outside the home.
Any chance of them being rehabilitated is intensive psychological intervention while being removed from the situation.
I agree with Daz though having the prisoners sit down with them and explain their life and how they got there and their regrets would be better.

Kids are actually more dangerous than adults on average on gangs because of their underdeveloped sense of danger, long term consequences, and lack of emotional maturity. They're willing to take a life with a weapon much easier than a man with a sense of morality, if that makes any sense. Child soldiers/gang members are to be respected like adults from the victim side of things because they're so unpredictable and erratic.

When I was 13, I got sent to Arizona Boys Ranch. Orientation was a lot like this. That lasted about 4 months, then you went to a different part, where it's not this bad. More like a Military academy. I was in there with straight killers from Cali(95-97), and being a small white guy from Indiana, I wasn't as tough as I thought I was..lol Set me straight.
They ended up shutting it down though, cause too many kids were dying in the Arizona heat, because they would run us for hours. The place has an interesting story, if anyone wants to google it. When I got back, I was a good student, did sports, and then went into the Army. Being at ABR made Basic training a cake walk.

People say this show is fake, I guess to some people scripted always means fake. A few of the teens on this show ended up in jail/prison, or killed over doing illegal things years after being on the show I am going with it was real but scripted.
Apparently the inmates are all handpick based on if they can be trusted, they then go over the scrips when things are stagged such as the door scene in the 2nd clip, but as for interacting with the teens it seems they can do and say anything they want as long as they do not physically harm the teens.
Theres also scared straight program, these are what the show is based on I think and are well nothing like the show.
The programs cost $2,000 to $10,000 a month and are for parents to send at risk kids, part of the program the kids are sent to a prison where prisoners talks to the kids about how crappy prison is, how their lives are over, the things they have to deal with in prison, how thye cannot see their families etc.
I found a Q&A the producer Paul Coyne made assuming this was truly him.
"As the Executive Producer of Beyond Scared Straight, I can tell you that the inmates do not get compensated. The diversion programs we featured on the show were established by those jails and prisons long before we arrived with our cameras. The inmates don’t receive special treatment from the prisons either. In all truth, they do it because they know the route their own lives had taken and they now have the gift of experience, which they give to these teens in order to put them on a better road.
It is an interesting dichotomy, that these killers, drug dealers and thieves are trying to be role models by detailing the wrong decisions they had made. When we shot the pilot, this was my first real exposure to hardened criminals. I was grateful but also quite scared to be around them. I was trying to find the humanity behind their eyes.
It was our first day shooting in a prison and we were perfecting the process as we went along. When it came time to break for lunch, we had pizza brought in and the prison gave us permission to give some to the inmates who were working with us. (We did not do this after that day, as we realized prison food was a good deterrent for the teens as well).
The inmates were brought to the pizza and deputies gave each two slices. I sat with the inmates and I noticed that one was not eating. He was just staring at it with a slight smile. I asked if he was not a fan of pizza. He loked up at me with a smile.
“This is the first piece of pizza I have had in 18 years. I just want to smell it for a few minutes and let it sink in.”
That moment always stuck with me. After, I could look at these inmates as bad guys, as killers and thieves, but I could also look at them as human beings who were just trying to make the most of the moments that mattered. Both could exist at the same time - and changing lives for the better was the only compensation they were after.".

Easy to act tough on a TV show where the kids know that nothing bad can happen except a couple convicts can yell at you, make you do drills, or try to force you to eat an orange! That's why the show didn't work. A better premise would be to have these guys tell horror stories of what can & does happen in prisons, murder, sexual assaults/rape, beatings, stabbings, theft of your belongings including food, the list is endless. Describe a few of those assaults in detail and they may think twice about living the life of a convict. Even better, show them pictures, now that may scare them straight. Prison is no joke in the U.S. Not the worst in the world but much worse than many countries.

Little man syndrome. Being bullied also either at home or at school. The list can be endless. All this show does is show them what prison is like but I dont think it deters all of them. What these kids need is proper treatment and above ALL proper parenting..... and to add to that is that now these kids are going to be scarred for life. It’s really annoying how the narrator keeps calling jail and prison personnel “police.” They’re not police. And jail and prison are not the same.

They’re not paint balls, they are rubber bullets that hurt like hell if they hit you, but aren’t deadly

Single mother households are the worse environment for children to be raised in. In comparison to traditional and single father households there isn't a single positive statistic.

8:05 oh bull theres plenty that'll sell their mom out for $10 too and smack their baby mommas around like it aint nothing. Theres ALOT of hypocracy in jails & prisons. And these are all filmed in county jails not prisons- huge difference

Rubber bullets are used in prison not paint balls it’s for non lethal crowd control 😂 they’re not fun to be shot with, hell if someone came shooting up the Ob office with paint balls they ain’t gonna tickle either 😂

Those are not rubber bullets. They are pepperballs. You can literally see them explode on impact.
