How Do You Get An Entire Train Into A Sealed Tunnel? | Huge Moves

- In London we follow the unenviable task of moving £20 million worth of brand new Tube trains 200 miles across the UK’s treacherous roads onto London Underground’s Waterloo & City Line. Once the trains reach the city, he has to thread each of the twenty carriages down a narrow hole.
In Manitoba, Canada, we chart the emotional journey of husband and wife wreck chasers Pat Madden and Annette Spaulding as they attempt to lift a long lost aircraft off the bottom of a lake. Can the team haul the aircraft out of the water before winter strikes?

The Waterloo & City Line, aka "The Drain", was built by the Waterloo & City Railway and operated for most of it's existence by the London & South Western Railway and it's descendant companies, Southern Railway & BR until 1994 when it was handed over to London Underground.
Also, to get the rollingstock in and out of the tunnels, a lift was provided at Waterloo that allowed vehicles to run off the main line and be lowered down into the tunnels.
This was removed & the shaft buried as part of the rebuilding of the West side of Waterloo when the temporary Channel Tunnel platforms were built at about the same time as the line was passed over to LUL.
I know this stuff is outdated, but at least Spark puts this stuff on UA-cam for free. I feel like most people just re-upload it in 240p and call it a day until it's taken down for copyright reasons.
Q how to get the trains, back onto the waterloo&city line. A same way they got them out in the first place
Yeah, they're making a big deal about putting them beck, how the hell did they get them out?
@ Jamsie, exactly! They got the old tube trains out. And I don't think they used the crane.
The original Armstrong lift was removed to make way for the International platforms in the mid-90s. So the W&C trains didn’t come out in the same way as they went in.
@@bfapple That wasn't the question, how did they get the stock out before taking them (the latest stock) to Doncaster for refurbishment?
@@michaelhunt4445 wasn’t clear.
Well Well, I always thought that they got big blokes to carry them down the escalators.

I wonder where Geoff was! I hope we'll see him here again once the 1992's are getting replaced by the NTfL stock.
the 92s are only around 20 years old and have only just reached halfway of there life expectancy
Fascinating, but overly dramatized, as you would expect for the American market, lol!
I agree on the over-dramatization. Crane operators likely have safety contingencies in place for wind, etc. and lifting refurbished tube stock into and out of a hole is probably just another day on the job. Same goes for diving - as long as they dive to the tables/computer and take a safety stop or two on ascent as needed, the risk of getting bent is relatively low.
I know this is off topic, but it does prove my point. Just compare the 'Kitchen Nightmare' series from Gordon Ramsay, the UK series and the US series. Drama all around in the US series, while the UK series is much more normal and down to the ground.
I agree with you when it comes to cable tv shows (which this smacks of). It’s all meant for the older generation, whereas Millennials are way to cynical for this 😂. There are a lot of great American docu’s too, though, just not on tv. That’s why I love CuriosityStream, there’s zero drama. German docu’s are probably the best, though, and British next. Anyway, sorry for the rant 😊
I would disagree that Americans like it. We roll our eyes at it. Idiotic TV producers think they need it, convinced that everyone but them is stupid. What they need to do is look in the mirror.
0:15 I remember that episode very well and I remember that tubestock lifted up in the sky and lowered down into the underground and become part of the new Waterloo and city line from Waterloo to bank
THIS IS UNCOMFORTABLE TO WATCH
i think the issue of the correct order could have been easily solved by simply writing down on a piece of paper what order they go in according to carriage number and print out numbers 1 to 20 and give to the lorry drivers so the co-ordinator simply would have to say: "ok, lorry number 12 now it's your turn"...
Would have been easier but for some stupid reason they make it harder and then mess up and blame someone else
@@b21playa At least they got some overtime.
the sad thing about that train car delivery? it used to be easier with both delivery of the cars from the railroad and getting them down to the tracks but the original access point was paved over when the short-lived Eurostar terminal nearby was built!
Great video .Love it thanks
IM GOING UNDERGROUND, AND THE BOY'S ALL SHOUT FOR TOMMOROW ! LAL,LAL,LAL
Oh my god so long since I've seen Monster Moves, I had to bang my fist on the table
That’s quite dangerous dealing with two machines to get the trains into the underground as no stations above connect to it. That’s very hard work.
I feel good watching videos like this :)
Glad to see they're finally wearing safety glasses!
My lucky day.. 👍 Appreciate it..
The first car already had the pogo-sticks attached before the wind picked up. Also as regards the wrong car order, the depot may be full, but trains can leave the depot.
As a note for those wondering why it’s suddenly become a problem on the W&C, the cars (yes on the underground they’re cars) they used to be put in and taken out using a lift that was removed to make way for the Eurostar platforms at Waterloo
Ah! But The Drain, despite being underground, was not part of the Underground until fairly late in it's existence so under LSWR/SR/BR custodianship they were coaches.
And in the '80s I worked on the 1940 stock at Eastleigh Works when they came in for overhaul.
Are there facilities for repair somewhere along the line then? One would expect that equipment has to be taken out of service from time to time for repair and general maintenance. How do they accomplish that?
@@timothybarney7257 there is a depot at Waterloo, with a lifting system for removal of bogies, maintenance pits, cranes etc. Tyre turning is done by removing the bogies and exchanging the wheel sets (turning is normally done at Ruislip) there is a programme to take advantage of the current shutdown to turn the tyres on the entire fleet)
@@timothybarney7257 The W&C does have maintenance facilities, but for a full refurbishment the vehicles do need to go to a main works. The "running sheds" have neither the equipment or the space to do such work.
What the video totally misses out is that the removal of the vehicles was by the same process in reverse, i.e. a bloody big skyhook to lift them out and onto road transporters.
@@timothybarney7257 the repair depot is just meters from the crane’s access point, anything major that the depot isn’t able to handle requires a crane and that’s really only for a major issue: fire, collision, retirement etc.
Excellent animations.
I can tell this is old because the East London Line is on the map, and all the national rail trains are in there old liveries.
You can also tell it’s old because it said Wateroo was a international Station which it was until HS1 was built
also "2006"
@@RWL2012 Yep
And the fact Waterloo is "international", and GNER and "Centro" is still a thing.
10:16 priceless.
They even spent there honeymoon searching for the fucker :)
You would expect Geoff Marshall to do the train on the crane stuff here!!
I wonder were he was. He does mention this 'hole' at the depot in his "Secrets of the Waterloo & City line" video for Londonist.
Also this will happen again when the 1992 stock trains will leave the network. So we can only hope he'll be there for a video.
They came out the same way - so they knew where to place the crane. Also the cars had to be delivered the correct way round - no room to swap them end for end. The original Waterloo & City line trains were taken in and out via a single car train lift but that is now beneath the Waterloo International terminal. I think a steam engine may have fallen down this shaft while moving cars in the past.
Memo to self - don't build underground railways with no link to the surface.
Yeah it’s almost like London did that and this video makes it seem like they didn’t. Oh wait....
It seems odd to me that the ‘hole’ wasn’t constructed with some sort of lift built in place to enable trains/ parts/ construction materials to be brought in without the need for quite so much temporary infrastructure. I get that retrofitting it now might be seen as too costly, it just seems odd it wasn’t designed in when the thing was built
@@johnd6487 Looking at Wikipedia, it appears that the line was built with such a lift at a different location - indeed, it's hard to see how the rolling stock of the time could have been put into place otherwise (unless it was built in situ). This lift got buried when Waterloo was modified for the Eurostar trains. Seems a strange thing to have done. Almost as if someone didn't care what would happen on someone else's watch.
@@sylviaelse5086 ah, the thoughts we state without bothering to do the research :-) thank you for your diligence. As for what happened, unfortunately, that sort of thing is not uncommon, especially when the tax payer is footing the bill - save it for now, someone else can pay later. Had much the same experience working for my local council a few years ago.
thats a cool suwbay
At some time or other, they got it out of there to work on it, didn't they? This looks like another fabricated energency for TV.
That is my question. To rehab something you must have something. What comes up should go in the same way.
At the time I think these were new trains. But of course you would need exa tlythe same set up to remove the old trains. Classic TV dramatisation
easier to remove than put inside, unlike yanking them out you need exact placement inside the tunnel and on the tracks
It is too bad they break up the tasks instead of doing one complete followed by the next making it unwatchable.
i think thats the point so they can make you watch the entire thing
They dumb it down to the most basic level a kid could understand it on purpose. For adults it's like torture to watch. The thing is kids prefer not to be pandered to. The difference between a UA-cam channel that might cover this Vs a traditional TV channel like this really shows.

Crane them out and put on trucks.
The underground is a place TERRIOST would love to visit..
Underground Bank Jubilee DLR Bow Trian
2020 and they never extended or made a little cross to he network, either the underground or the overground?
The RET in The Netherlands got 1 ad Beurs, so trains can go between the 2 lines(out of service)
See my previous comment - someone else asked the same question more or less. No room to put a spur in without some fairly major engineering and economic impact.
I love how the narrator spends a minute or so continuously restating that the above ground lines won't work.
Especially when it’s obvious than they have a way to do it because they got them out of there in the first place.

Using that ps2 controller like a champ
How did they remove the trains prior to the upgrade, and why not replace them the same way
As memory serves the answer is they did. No other way to do it. W&C line is a very special case though, it's very short, almost entirely enclosed and mostly under the river. To be honest smart play would have been to connect it to the Northern Line track or something for things like this..
Train 🚄
They had one job which was to put the trains in the right order, they should have put temporary numbers on them how thick
This video is from almost two decades ago... please time date vids accordingly...
its not the first time they lifted the trains in they did that back in 1992 whne they replaced he old 1930's trains with the 1992 stock so they would already had the palns and the know how i was there watching the lift back then

That train numbering system is bonkers. Keep it simple!
“BONKERS”
Yeah
it would be easier if they went consecutive numbering with a letter to indicate that it was a trailer or powered car but nope: archaic numbering!
Where do they come from. First Mammy and Daddy train go to bed, then 9 months later a new train comes out of Mammy's tummy.
It would be nice if they used the correct terms - underground not subway, railway not railroad & of course coaches/carriages not cars.
Why London metro is not connected to normal train route like in Finland

@@alexs87 yeah

Like threading a needle ? No , it either fits or it doesn't there's nothing precision about it at all and I comment as a crane operator. and with regards to 'special outriggers' all cranes have outriggers other that some specifically made to use on wheels 5-10 ton iron fairy type of crane
Quality pedantry right there.
@@ezmyrelda Not at all it makes me mad when you hear this nonsense all the time 'giant crane' probably a 25 ton crane , half the time they call them cranes when you're looking at an excavator !
you try putting an object in a hole barely bigger than the object you’re trying to put inside while doing it from a distance away and trying not to topple over.
you might not handle a load like that but that is exactly like threading a needle. i call bs on your claim of being a crane operator as no operator let alone a heavy lift one would make such an asinine claim
