Risk is a genuine classic board game that you can pick up used for a few bucks. I have three copies in my closet, all packed into one box, that I paid less than a total of ten bucks for. The dice combat is fun in this case because the game is fast and easy for the entire family. If I start with any piece of Australia, that's where I'm going to amass my army, take over the continent, and use those extra armies to take over Asia and then the entire freakin' world! If you love Risk, there's an old Fantasy Flight game called Dust that is a step between Risk and something like Axis and Allies. I haven't played Dust in years, but I remember loving it because it has multiple unit types and a very light economic system, but never turns into a slog, like Axis and Allies.

If you want to fix the infantry problem, say cavalry is 3 units and cannons are 5. 5 and 10 is just too much.
While I would still enjoy a game of Risk I'd rather play pretty much any of its variants (I own quite a lot of them).
Still happy to see someone who isn't just shitting on Risk for a change.

I've always loved that the different versions of Risk were actually different games! I don't know why people hate on it so much when I can recall HUNDREDS of threads maybe even thousands, on BGG asking if there were modern versions of Risk. I mean, shit, there has to be a reason why people are looking for more Risk in different forms.

The many shortcomings of the game have been well documented. But as a very light war game to teach someone who has not played these types of board games it is one of the best. Easy to understand and quickly figure out what not to do. It is still a hall of fame game for those merits alone.

Agreed, a game that I would play anytime over the horde of SLEUGs.
I was given RISK for Christmas 1960, must have been first edition- wooden cubes and lozenges.
And it’s not “luck” but probability, experienced players know the odds and play them.

Awesome video, keep it up. I played this game with my friends back in the day. My top 2 problems with this game were not enough of infantry units and isolated Australia from other continents. So easy fix: if you need some infantry, just borrow some meeples from Carcassonne. it looks great on the talble. :D Also Australia problem - just draw a line with a marker across Pacific Ocean from South America (Argentina to Eastern Australia) and problem fixed. Have a great day everyone! :)

Also I suggest looking up the "Nuclear Risk" Rules which were published in Dragon Magazine circa early 1980 , but can be found in a lot of places today.
You will need older versions of Risk pieces to play it though . Not these newer "cheap" miniature versions😎

  • @chrisperrien7055

The "mission" cards were borrowed from Castle Risk. Old Risk didn't use them.
The wood block armies were nice, the plastic "caltrops/ asterisks" were functionally better to handle. Yes , the newer injection-molded figurines were a stupid/mal-functional idea.
The plastic star/asterisks Risk pieces also were useful to use in other games or home-made war-games.
Way back in the day (1978 or so) I used the plastic Risk pieces and Scrabble wood pieces to make a helluva open floor miniature space-ship battle game . 😎

Risk starcraft is such a good time if you have a whole day and 3+ people.
Plants vs zombies risk is better than it has any right to be (2 player only)
And star wars risk isnt really risk, but still fun.

When attacking each die has a 41% chance of defeating a unit, meaning that you need at minimum 10% more troops than your opponent for a coin flip.
By rolling more dice than your opponent your odds will go way up. If the attacker rolls 3 dice and defender 2, attacker has a 66% chance to win. While 3 dice vs 1 is approximately 90%.
The game is called risk because there is no 100% sure way to win
