The Partridge Family - I'll Meet You Halfway

  • The Partridge Family was the '70s successor to the Monkees. Both were totally fictional rock/pop "bands" produced by Screen Gems, the television branch of Columbia Pictures. While the Monkees (TV series and band concept) were styled as mid-'60s counter-culture zaniness à la the Beatles' film Hard Days Night, the Partridge Family was strictly wholesome with traditional family values despite the lite quasi-hip tone of the show. The top-rated series first-aired on ABC from 1970 to 1974, premiering September 25, 1970. Besides the face and voice of David Cassidy ,one of the other draws of the show was the uncanny deadpan timing of Danny Bonaduce as Danny Partridge and the simmering neurosis of the group's manager Reuben Kincaid as played by Dave Madden. When sharing a scene together, the two were hysterical.
Starring stage and screen veteran Shirley Jones and then up-and-coming actor David Cassidy, The Partridge Family was loosely based on real-life family pop/rock band the Cowsills ("Hair," "The Rain, The Park & Other Things," "Indian Lake," "Love American Style"). The other Partridge siblings were Susan Dey as Laurie, Suzanne Crough as Tracy, and Jeremy Gelbwaks as Chris during the first season. Gelbwaks' parents felt uncomfortable with the ensuing mania that surrounded the show and took the youngster out of the cast. He was replaced in the role by Brian Foster. The only members of the cast heard on the records are lead vocalist Cassidy and Shirley Jones on background vocals. All of the Partridge Family records were originally released on Bell Records. The harmonies on the Family's records were quite similar to another Bell act, the 5th Dimension.
In the premiere episode, the Partridge siblings ask their mom Shirley to help them make a record label demo. Recording "I Think I Love You," the family gets signed to a record label and has a number one record their first time out. "I Think I Love You," written by Tony Romeo and producer by Wes Farell, actually did become a number one million-selling pop hit, holding down the spot for three weeks beginning November 21, 1970.
Other Partridge Family hits were: "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted," another million-seller hitting number six pop in early 1971; "I'll Meet You Halfway," which hit number nine pop in spring 1971; and "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" from summer 1971. Besides "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," none of the other Partridge Family singles broke the Pop Top 30. The huge album sales were fueled by the show's practice of fully featuring two songs per episode. As with the Monkees, top L.A. session players the Wrecking Crew (bassist Joe Osborn, drummer Hal Blaine, and keyboardist Larry Knechtel) were recruited to play on the Patridge Family hits. The Crew can also be heard on the background music of the TV series.
Of course, with a phenomenally successful Top Ten TV show comes the opportunity for a merchandising bonanza. There were Partridge Family games, magazines, coloring books, music and paperback books, pillow cases, toy guitars, dolls, lunch boxes, beach towels, paper dolls, and a line of children's clothing, which generated about 500 million dollars in licensing revenue for the studio. With so much money being generated from his visage, Cassidy wanted a piece of the profits. As the show became increasingly popular, Cassidy became more at odds with the squeaky clean image of the Keith Partridge character. To alleviate the dichotomy, Cassidy did a scathing interview in Rolling Stone, basically knocking the show, admitting to his marijuana use and groupie sex. He also posed for a frontal, semi-nude poster that was included in the issue. To no avail, the show's ratings remained high. After four seasons, Cassidy decided to call it quits, and the producers, deciding that there was no show without him, stopped production on the show.
Berated by some, just as the Monkees were ("the Fabricated Four," a snide variation of the Beatles' press-tagged nom de plume, the Fab Four) for not being a "real" band, the Partridge Family (the TV show and the record releases) have outlasted their contemporary critics, selling over 25 million records and leaving a lasting legacy of fan clubs and enduring rock/pop/bubblegum music. ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide

      Stop writing nonsense.
David Cassidy inherited his father's talent.
David's father was the famous actor and singer, Jack Cassidy.

When I was 10 years old, I wanted a trampoline for Christmas and my mother gave me the Partridge Family's first album instead.......and I still have it after 42 years. So glad I am not the only person who still thinks PF music is some of the happiest to be heard. :-)

I started guitar lessons the following summer, and you may see the result to your left. "I'll Meet You Halfway" is still in active repertoire (I played this video in just now in rehearsal).

I've seen a lot of early (and recent) David Cassidy concert footage, he never hit bad notes, and his vibrato was amazingly smooth and controlled. Funny thing, he wanted to be an actor, not a musician. When his career took off, he was a solid Blues and Rock&Roll fan. He was a great singer and a very good guitarist. I would recommend reading his autobiography.

It just has a lot of meaning to where, as we all grow up in life, we will always be able to love someone, and to be loved right back. Getting back to 1971 could've never been so heartwarming.🎼🎶🎵

I've saved a lot of vinyl over the years, but the ones I miss the most are The Partridge Family albums. I was 10 when the first one came out and I listened to it over and over and over. Those albums planted the seed for me to become a multi-instrumental musician, taught me about song structure, verses, choruses, harmonies, drum breaks, etc. I believe The Wrecking Crew were the LA studio musicians on these albums and I couldn't have had better teachers. I could tell by watching Jeremy Gelbwaks on TV that he definitely didn't know how to play the drums. I saw Hal Blaine's name on the liner notes as the drummer, and wondering if he was a cool dude. When I listen to PF songs now, it takes me right back to sitting on the floor with a record player and dropping that needle over and over. 10 years old, singing at the top of my lungs. Pure joy.

I was fortunate to meet him in 1993 at Tower Records in Philly when he was on a promotional tour for the 20th anniversary of one of the Partridge Family albums, and I found him to be a sweet man, who had no problem signing my original PF album, which I bought as a 13 yr old in 1970, along with the Christmas card from the PF Christmas album and several photos I took when I saw him at Atlantic City's "old" Steel Pier, where he appeared in concert in August, 1971. We also chatted a bit and he chuckled when I, then 36, told him that had I met him 20 years prior, that they would have had to peel me off the floor. Funny how we see people and things differently as we mature. Sweet memories of an extremely talented, but, ultimately, tragic man. So sad that he left this world far too soon and under such heartbreaking circumstances.

We were so blessed to be the original generation to experience and enjoy 1st hand, now our children and their children can enjoy it also if we show these 60's, & 70's episodes of Thw Monkees, The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch. I Think I Love You and I'll meet you half way. David and I share the same birthday. April 12. And both of Our Grandmothers names were Charlotte. And when We were younger We both went to Trinity Church. His was in West Orange, N.J. The one I went to was in South Jersey. My Maiden name was Madden. I use to tell People Dave Madden was my Uncle, and that one year he took me to the Studio to meet David Cassidy for Our Birthday's. The fibs we would tell Our Friends back when We were 12. I also had the famous lunch box. The one David complained about. I think he was more upset that they ripped him off. He should of been able to sue them. They made millions off of him alone. He had a unique voice. His favorite Mansion, out of all the homes he Owned through the years. He had to Auction it off, just two years before he passed. Because of his Divorce. Two Male Fans bought it, and they rent it out. It's in Palm Springs, Florida. They rent it out at $25,000. a night. There's 6 bedrooms, so if 6 Couples got together , they could rent it at $4,150. a. Night. It's a really nice home, and kind of private.

I dedicate this song and these lyrics to my brother…
    I’LL MEET YOU HALFWAY
Will there come a day when you and I can say
We can finally see each other?
Will there come a time when we can find the time
To reach out for one another?
We've been travelin' in circles such a long, long time
    Tryin' to say hello, h’o!
And we can just let it ride, but you're someone that I'd
    Like to get to know
I'll meet you halfway, that's better than no way
There must be some way to get it together
And if there's some way, I know that some day
We just might work it out forever

My favorite song under The Partridge Family name, followed closely by "Only A Moment Ago". Both songs are incredible because of David Cassidy's voice. He was an awesome singer and had an achingly beautiful face. I will continue to listen every day, even if it's just a song or two, as I have been doing for years, until my time is up. Whether it be the epilepsy or something else that takes me out of the picture, I will listen to you sing until then. Thank you, David.

Also like the colorful robe Keith is wearing at the end. David was so cute as Keith Partridge because he had that baby face and was short! David was such a good talented actor, people couldn't believe he was completely opposite Keith Partridge. Cursed, rock and rolled, did the 60's stuff before the show, he claims he was bad! Now I see a kind man who touches my heart when I see him in pain. God Bless.

God, David's mother must have been so proud to have created such a beautiful son! He always came across as so very sensual, sensitive and thoughtful. And he was probably very lucky to also have Shirley Jones in his life during these professional years and perhaps even afterwards. Such a pity that he couldn't stop obsessing about his father not admiring him for his beautiful work! Because that was at the root of all his alcohol problems that ended up totally ruining his life and ultimately killing him...

I always loved this song but although i cherished it, it was super sad in my eyes and in my heart and i didnt know why???
Fast forward.... I honestly didnt hear this song in thirty something years but recently came across it and immediately after prior years of councelling realized it was because my father never had time for me and then died when i was a teenager without anything bring resolved. The sadness came from this prior wishful subconscious or buried loss of connecting with him.
I had never put it together until it recently played.. it hit me like a ton of bricks now that I healed from it all.
Amazing complex minds that we have!!!!
