- A video I created outlining an upgrade of an Amstrad PC1640 IBM Compatible from 1987. Also fresh software install of MS-DOS 5.0 and Amstrad software. Then cuts to my own build with description and demo of games and other software. Any questions please fire away!

I resisted a temptation of GOTEK and XT-IDE in my Amstrad PC1512 (although I have to confess I use them in some other comps in my collection) - just wanted to retain the "pure experience" of working, say, with GEM and two 5.25 floppy drives! :-)
Ah man, so many good memories from this machine :) I think i had the same 1640 back when i was a teen. Eventually it broke and it found its way to the bin, but I really liked it, it was quite a robust machine. Also the PC speaker had a volume knob if i recall correctly? PC Speaker sound rocked on this machine.
Thanks for the memories, cheers!
Yes that's right, the volume knob will send it ear piercing loud! It is surprisingly robust, it has taken everything I have thrown at it, and a very capable DOS machine
As a fellow PC1640 owner, this brought back some great memories. Thanks!!
That's great to hear! Did you use any of the games or software?
@@willmoindrot From the pack-in games: I played a lot of Bruce Lee, Dambusters and Tag Team Wrestling! I could never figure out PSI 5 Trading Company - perhaps worth another look! Other than that, a lot of hours on Commander Keen! 🙂
In terms of application software - I did like the GEM apps. I remember a graphics/paint app that I spent a lot of time with!
could you tell me how you set the jumpers on the gotek, I cant seem to get it working
I'll have a look and let you know. One thing that I had to suss out was I also had to be mindful of the existing drive
@@willmoindrot Thanks I have noticed I cant do anything without the A drive connected but every jumper configuration I have tried doesnt seem to work
@@brendan1495 There is something whereby the computer has to have an A drive which is 720kb (not 1.44). I have mine set from memory that my Gotek is A drive and the floppy is B (but that is not the default setup - I think I might have changed something in the config as well). But I'll open it up this evening and take a look - it's good to document for next time I forget!
@@willmoindrot Thanks a lot, I have a 5.25 floppy in A set to D0 and gotek in B set to D1
@@brendan1495 Had a look, not sure how much this information will help: Gotek (AT32F435 / Flashfloppy) is on S0; Floppy (Amstrad 40046 360kb) JP1 is set to 1; Gotek is set to Shugart in FF.cfg, host=unspecified. When I first had it installed I had it the other way round with Floppy on 0 and Gotek 1 and it just worked. I then tried switching Gotek to be on 0 and Floppy to 1 and it did not work to begin with by my notes, unfortunately other than referencing this site they do not say what I did in the end, and there is nothing special about drive parameters in my config.sys. Anyway hope this is enough to help a little bit: www.retroisle.com/amstrad/pcs/Technical/Hardware/DiskUpgradeOnPC1512_1640_2086.php
