Sounded like me talking lol. I've come to realize that I want to be self employed rather then " a company ". Yes less work I can do, but the quality is at its highest. Hardly any call backs and no drama of employees. I schedule what I can do for a good week, being able to pick and choose, and I've learned to not worry with the rest. Communication is key with customers. As long as your honest and forthcoming, there will always be work out there.
How do you find work? I'm in florence ky so as long as your not round here then spill it ha. Im.only 4 years in and not expecting to start bus anytime soon but its gonna happen!
@@andypatterson8991 We have used local radio and Google ad services. Google is expensive, but it works. Radio is hit or miss, plus has a larger area that's hard to cover.

Ima same way No real advertising only word of mouth maybe sponsoring some baseball leagues or something. Luckily I have my mother which is retired that takes care of the office bookwork which allows me to be able to be in the field and I usually have at least one or two employees. but I do almost strictly service,change out and maintenance. We have a couple industrial clients like Johnson Controls and another company that does manufacturing for Mercedes. That’s the best thing for you to do because you get paid four times a year to do just an inspection and write up Adamas estimates on what it will take for all of the units to get back running and one time of year to do used for maintenance but the important thing is is when you’re doing those maintenances if a residential customer calls and you know they’re not gonna wait around you got to get them immediatelyyou can come back to those industrial preventive maintenance is if you get a call out from a residential customer. Rarely do much new construction once in a blue moon and for usually a customer that’s building their house not for contractors and rarely do any real duct jobs. I’m in Tuscaloosa Alabama-but I do suggest you at least having a helper that you can trying to be a decent service tech and help you to make it to where you’re not strictly doing it yourself at least I can do preventive maintenance while you do paperwork at the office if you don’t have someone doing it and you got to be careful about that because you got a trust who is doing the paperwork-- Also pay as you go don’t try to get a brand new truck and get all brand new stuff and go in debt when you start it and start out as early as you can before you have a family that’s what I did that way you didn’t have very many bills that she had to take care of so if you could make as much of a salary as you think you need
Same here. I have a one man show here in FL, no helpers, no headaches, no advertising just word of mouth. Nice and simple and I want to keep it that way. And a majority of my clients are friends or friends of friends, so I have a good relationship with them as opposed to just being a “customer”
For those jobs that you don’t want to tackle there’s a company that would love the referrals from you. A mentor of mine was a big advocate for strategic partnerships. You could be getting paid a percentage of whatever those referrals charge for the job which would bring you additional money just for the lead turnover. I think it’s worth consideration. Everyone who commented has good and true ideas, but is it for you because it ain't easy running large crews along with the large projects. I have been in the business 43 years, in business 24 of them. The older you get the more help you need. What is your vision for the company, and exit strategy you need to ask yourself. How much is enough to keep you happy and secure your future? Keep it simple... We are all built different and want a different quality of life.

Very similar story with me. But, I sub out installs, and some big jobs I don’t take. I normally go home at 5 and I only work on the weekends when I want. You have to take care of yourself. I limit how much I take on. If I can’t get to it by 5 they’ll have to wait.
I literally hear myself in your words. It’s crazy! When your family relies on the income, it’s tough turning work away that’s the biggest stress on top of the behind the scenes stuff. When it’s hot and busy, you lose sight of things and run yourself into the ground. My wife is my therapist during those months. Great analogy!

Thanks for posting this. I'm literally in the middle of getting my state contractors license after working for other companies the last 20 years. Even though I already knew a lot of this, I still needed to hear it. Especially the part about not feeling the need to be everything to everyone and tailoring your work. Very smart.

I don’t know about your state , as Iowa they will ask for a MASTER HVAC AND REFRIGERATION LICENSE first. If you have that then go a head apply for statewide contractor license. They will need a bond, and liability insurance. Iowa is $5000.00 bond, and $250,000.00 minimum
You got this! I've been in business for myself for 35 years. Did it most times myself. Sold my company in PA and "retired" to SC and was bored. I started another company, by myself again and do just home warranty stuff. Free leads and I work as much or as little as I want. Fix and replace. Easy Peasey. Only problem is some packaged units on the ground are hard to move by myself if I can't drive right up to it with my trailer. Over 60 here.......

That’s it right there! Don’t fear failure, fear regret! You’ll regret it if you look back at things and wish you would’ve done this or that. But it’s to late now. Oh well if we fail or succeed, I’m always afraid of failure. But that’s inspiring to me what you did!

I can fully relate to this video. I started my company for the freedom to do things when I wanted. It soon became the opposite haha. My company is on the verge of its 10 year anniversary and I’m actually a smaller business now but I’m way more relaxed. Great video mate.

YES!! Help is a great thing. I am finding myself slipping recently, I used to be really really good at diagnosing but now that I do more install’s and different jobs I’m losing touch with my diagnostic skills. In order to offer the best service you need to be able to focus on what you are doing. When you have help you can direct more work, and be opened up to stop staring down the barrel and get that 10 ft back perspective to see the bigger picture.

Great video brother. After starting my one man show 3 years ago, I’ve fell in that same trap trying to take on anything and everything. So recently I’ve had to start telling people I can’t take on certain work like complete duct changeouts, big commercial jobs, etc. Also trying to do less attic work, starting to have back issues. And you’re right about your customers being loyal even though you can’t provide every service they need. My customers understand that I’m just one guy and can only do so much. Seeing your kids right before you start your day is a bitter sweet feeling. My son's always get sad when I have to go but we make the best of the little time we have together. I am about to be venture out on my own in the next coming months, I have a Master's Plumber License, EPA Certification and other certifications burning in my pockets, been in the trades for 10 years now at 27 years old. I don't see myself working for anybody after this year, I have dabbled on side jobs and dealing with GC's, home owners, difficult people, unprecedented situations, long hours/no hours, no money, stretching my dollar. I am hungry for my next endeavor in life, 5 grand in my pocket right now that I need to make something out of myself.

When you did the video about that old building I was wondering how in the world a solo guy could tackle that. Good on you to realize this. I worked by myself (different trade). I was on call 24/7 I think I lasted 3 years before I hired help. I have a full crew now and haven't been on the road in probably 20 years but it all works out. Best of luck to you.

I understand your feelings. I was working at my family business with my dad and brother and I was doing a majority of the work, the paper work, answering phones. My dad passed away and my brother was never a show up to work on time and ready to go guy like I am. I got burned out and quit. I miss it but I could not keep going on like I was. Having all your business and running it right is very tough. Been debating trying to start up something mobile now. I still do a few jobs for my old customers that I really liked.
It is very tough to turn customers away also. They come to you and like your work and you don't want to disappoint them. Hiring good people is very hard when you have a strong work ethic. You put in 100% and expect that from your employees but most folks don't want to do more than 30% any more.
I'm training in HVAC now because of the same kinda story. My employer was a one man company and getting too much work for just himself. I was just going to get into electrical, but I'm enjoying this a lot.
We need the guys like you in the HVAC business. Please, don't leave!

This is the video I needed.. just got my truck, topper and decked drawer system so I can go out on my own. All of my friends and family think I am a fool for not focusing on install.. I can only handle what I can handle, and I really enjoy service and maintenance and have several friends that are willing to pay me for the leads on installs. You have been a great find on UA-cam. I hire sub for installation but I do all my service calls by self. it is been four years since I’ve started my business. I tried to hire someone who can handle my business but could not succeed. Been in business since 1991. Iam 62 years old. Like what I do. But what started to get to me was stress. Way to much stress. You may cope with it while your young but eventually it'll get to you. So take it easy no rush do work that you your self can handle by yourself. It'll work out in the long run. Don't think you'll be losing any customers. Seen the great work you do buddy 👍. Take care of yourself and family.
I feel you on the one man show thoughts, I've been in business for a year and I'm already seeing how unsustainable it is.
That's exactly how I've been running my one man business for 30 yrs. As I have been getting older, I've been cutting down on the more physical work and doing what I could handle. No more climbing roofs or new construction. Mainly service and changeouts. The changeouts are mainly basement jobs, not attics. I have a part time worker that helps me with them. Your choosing the right path, don't burn yourself out. Do what you could handle.

@@Deltron6060 I usually go away a couple of weeks a year plus a couple long weekend trips. When I do I have another company that I trust cover for me. I work until about 5 every night and rarely work weekends. The reason I went on my own is because I wanted to be able to control my own hours. I didn't like being on call, or getting back to a shop at 430 and then being told, " we have an emergency furnace to put in" Screw that! I was able to coach my kids in sports, something I probably would have never been able to do working for somebody in this business. It worked out for me and I'm fortunate, but you have to be good at what you do and be honest with your customers and they will call you back.

Your story is very similar to mine i have been in business for 12 years for myself ran most everything by myself or just with a helper for years then hired a couple more guys and ran all over fixing their stuff so now its just me again. Im at the point of wondering what to do and not completely get out of the field the money is great but doing it all alone is exhausting over time. You were correct on everything you said sounds like me talking. I am pretty much doing the same thing as you Im just noticing the drastic cut in cash once you quit doing all the installs it takes a little getting used to I always feel like I have to say yes to everyone too. Man I fully understand where you are and how you feel. Wish you the best. Thanks for the videos.

Glad you didnt close your HVAC company; there's a huge need for honest and skilled HVAC companies and techs
About 20 years ago I had a moment of clarity and realized that 90% of my headaches came from 10% of my work. I was financially secure enough at that point to drop those accounts and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m 68 years old now and I’ve been doing this for 45 years and I can tell you today I just take the low hanging fruit and there is enough of it in my area to make a great living.
I'm a plumber for 14 years I star 3 years ago just doing that today I'm very happy without a lot less stress good point 👍
Good job on thinking more about your overall stress management when it comes working for yourself. Hvac is amazing but we’re often forced to think we have to do every single thing and that’s not what it’s about. No enjoyment in our work means feeling more like it’s a job then a passion.

Don't give up reguardless, your good at HVAC, make sure you have insurance on everything, just incase something goes wrong or someone tries to sue, or lies about a mistake. Been following you for few years now. March 2021 I quit a company and started my own. After first solo install, I told myself never again. Got few phone numbers from tech school and now use guys to help me out. I told them I don't have job every day, but once in a while I will call. And so far works great. I'll rather pay someone $200, $250 and be done with install faster. I also don't pick up any construction work, just tell my customers I don't have man power. Just service, maintenance and change outs. Maybe one day I'll have full time employees. That why you build a business and hire employees. I had no choice. All owners were five different hats until we realize we’re not super man.
Standard fuel/petrol in Australia is around $5.67 to $7.00 per US Gallon ($1.50 to $1.85 per litre). Premium is usually 56.7c more per gallon (15c per litre)
I live in San Jose, Ca and I put Chevron Premium 91 in my vehicle, the price ranges in different places but it's usually around $5, $5.30 or $5.50.
im in the bay area as well and i feel you, the gas prices are insane right now! Does your car require 91 octane? Dont buy from Chevron they have the highest prices.
Geezus.... i only live 15 miles away from San Jose and we arent at $5.30/91octane per gallon... YET keyword... YET. Im despising this state more and more by the months passing.... slowly but surely.

I too have this same feeling, but unlike you, after evolving as a business owner, grown my clientele, and created a quality standard of operation, (also, let's face it, it's hard work) I am ready to get employees to repeat and perpetuate my standard onward.I want the bigger projects, but I also want to keep maintenance as a mainstay in my business as well, in my market, it gets you in the door...I will say though, very nice video, self discovery and knowledge of self are critical in life...nice truck btw...wheels 🔥
This is what happens when your business ends up running you VERSUS you running your business. I went through the same thing about 3-5 years ago , i weeded out the difficult / time consuming customers and jobs and now keep my service area tight. Im down to about 1/3 of the miles on my truck and all the savings that provides from 3 years ago. Im now able to pick and choose my customers and jobs and specialize in 85 % service work and maintenance, also able to provide same day service calls and charge those customers accordingly. Stay the course it will pay off in the end and you will be a lot happier in the end . Good luck

I took a couple of semesters of HVAC while I was still a full time firefighter/paramedic around 15 years ago, never finished. I retired almost a year ago and have really been thinking about going back and finishing (starting over). I have been around the new home home/remodel industry for around 20 years and would have no desire to do new home installs. I am 54 years old now and would like to do just service work and maybe occasional change out. Good video, good info.

Never could make it in HVAC working for myself. With a little help from family in invested in a few rentals. At that point I was able to work the way I wanted to. No emergency calls. Vacation when I want. Turn down jobs I don't want. I'm a licensed HVAC contractor. Been at it for 40 years. Got a good life. One man operation.

I figured out everything that you are saying this last summer. I am trimming down my service to basic repairs and will charge triple on installs/change outs. I will get another hvac contractor to help me and pay him well for full installs.
Up in Northern Illinois gas prices are $3.65 🤬🤬🤬 Coffee that gets me rolling is Bustelo...probably stronger than the diesel you put in your truck! Always enjoy your videos!!! 💪💪

I have a high roof van, made custom shelves And carry most of universal repair parts with me when I go to a service call, and get things done when I'm there, save lot of time to run and get parts and make second trip.
Techin' right now and can definitely say I want no part of running a whole-ass operation. Having to worry about service and install and keeping reliable/quality employees sounds like a bitch. Hats off to anyone with the chutzpah to be the big dog.
Same here . I did electrical . Plumbing . Heating . AC. . Refrigeration . It became way to much . Working 7days a week. 14hr days .
Now I have a friend who does all my install and swap outs. My brother does all the electric. And me . I just do service and repair.

You are so real and I respect that l,I have been in the industry for 2 years only (Commercial) but I have been Following you since day one and I would love to work for you.
Me and my partner pick and choose our work 100%. We ask where the furnace is. If it's in the attic we refer them elsewhere. No attic work period. Service work, compressors, new split systems and some maintenance is all we do. It's rare we will get on a roof. The reason why? Old age. Makes for a pretty relaxed day.....and keeps us from breaking a hip or worse.

I know what you are talking about. I work full time doing grocery store refrigeration and also have been in business for 3 years with the state of Alabama. I’m my only employee. I do 3-4 installs a year and bunch of service work. It doesn’t feel good to past on duct jobs. I just don’t have the manpower to complete in timely matter. When a bigger company can knock one out in a day. It would take me 2-3. So I pass on them. Small and simple is also how I operate. Hang in there bud. Love watching the vids keep them coming.
Here in Nacogdoches, Texas " oldest town in Texas EST 1779". GAS prices are about 3.19
I was a commercial/industrial electrical contractor with 35 employees, blanket contracts on new restaurants, office buildings, school facilities, medical offices and industrial buildings. I worked 7 days a week, even on weekends when my guys were off, I was on a jobsite working. Then I done engineering, payroll, estimating and invoicing nights and weekends with a CPA doing my quarterly and year-end reports. I just didn't feel that I had enough office work to justify hiring a office person. At 36 yrs old, I was having severe chest pains and collapsed in my living room, my wife called for help and they got me to the hospital. 36 yrs old getting a heart cath, then the cardiologist came into my room with my wife sitting there and said, "you are only 36, in great shape, your arteries are as clean as an athletes. The hardest part of what I was doing was 35 employees, it was like having 5 good employees and babysitting 30 grown men. After a month of thinking it through, I sat all of the guys down and told them I didn't want to lay anyone off so they needed to start looking for jobs because I was not taking any more contracts and the work we had on the books would last approx. 6 months. In the end you will select the customers that fit you, instead of taking every job that comes along. Working with other self-employed people, to select the jobs you are good at, and actually enjoy doing, is very satisfying. You can create a network of people you trust and support, which in the end will be an enrichment of your life, as a professional person and in private.

Your on the right track man. I’ve been running my one man operation for 23 years now. I’m in southeast Texas between Houston and Beaumont. I’ve had 2 service guys and a full time install crew in the past and a lot more headaches. I used to take every type of job that came along. Now I run all our service and my wife runs the office. I have a great sub crew that I’ve used now for 10 years (and that is super hard to find). I’m very fortunate I’ve found them. I mainly do just residential and very light commercial. I pick and choose my customers and do the things that I’m good at. I get a little burned out every summer but deer season helps me pull through lol. I don’t do new construction. I choose my work that I can make the most $ at and still provide great customer service. The a/c and heating business has always been feast or famine type thing. It has been good to me and my family. Just keep Jesus Christ and your family number one you can get through any difficult times!
How do you handle taking time off for vacation?
yes, you experience what many small business owners do, working in your business not ON your business. Its a leap of faith to hire people and expect them to have the same level of engagement as you the owner has, very seldom that happens you find someone that thinks like an owner. Now you have to generate enough revenue to support 2 people, and so it goes!

Haha this is spot on. I am a one man show and now only do 3-4 construction projects a year. I used to do over 10 a year but I had multiple crews and HUGE overhead. I was working more to keep others busy and it was intense. I am also a one man show. I dream about working for someone else every day. Maybe once I save up enough money and have a few properties in 5-7 years I will start hiring out every little thing even if I take a big pay cut.

Wife does my scheduling, warranty registrations. Also have an accountant. Wife sends her what she needs every month , they deal with the monthly taxes. I WORK, CONVERSATE WITH CUSTOMERS ON JOB, ABSOLUTELY KILL IT THROUGHOUT THE SUMMERS, SELF EMPLOYED ONLY.

It call working more efficient . It better to focus on specific task than trying to eat the whole pie yourself. I notice a lot of business owner trying to juggle 10 balls with 2 hands (even if it manageable it not efficient) .
Totally understand it’s a full time hustle to be successful. A true tradesman with first class skills hang in there and gets some help if need be .
Im in Western NY, normal unleaded near me is sitting around 3.45/3.49 right now depending on where you go. Thankfully Im only a few minutes from a gas station on reservation land that is at 3.19. Still too much for my liking, but that's life
