Moreover, there were only a few engineers that handled recording, and they made every note from every instrument sound crisp and clear. Now days, when the occasional real musician slips through the gate keepers, their talent goes to waste with a muddled recording, despite all the digital tools.

I like Dust in the Wind but it is kind of plain compared to this song. I would be more partial to The Wall or Miracles Out of Nowhere. There is a lot more going on in those songs to analyze than there is in Dust in the Wind. Also it feels like there are roughly 40,000 UA-cam reactions to Dust in the Wind and maybe a dozen between The Wall and Miracles Out of Nowhere combined.

Kansas was the first band I got into.
My mom bought me the cassette tape, AND a clock radio with a tape player for Christmas in like 1980 or some shit.
I wore that cassette the fuck out.
      Next cassette was Asia.
      Then Prince. Then...
I delved deep into punk rock, speed metal, death metal, and hip hop.
      Now...
I'm all about classical music, old school country, Eastern European rock...
Basically everything but modern country and hip hop.

Hello, Jess! My first time seeing you come up in my feed. ☺
I don't know if you've ever covered Prog/Progressive Rock bands before but Kansas was one of them, though they also leaned heavily into Rock and Folk, even Spiritual. The majority of Prog bands were Classically trained musicians who turned that influence to other forms. The different sections of this song are similar to the sections of a Classical piece, compressed and tightened into a radio friendly Rock song.
One of the great aspects of older music, something newer efforts have lost, is the wide array of differing styles that have influenced the music. One single band can display deep knowledge of Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk, World, R&B, Doo Wop and even Opera. These varied styles kept the music fresh and interesting, as opposed to the stale repetition of modern.

You will love to analyze the incredible Steve Walsh of KANSAS. He is considered by many as one of the top five singers of this era. I highly recommend "Journey From Mariabronne" which is an astounding composition in either the studio or their live version from "Two For the Show" album. Also "Angels Have Fallen," "Miracles Out of Nowhere," “Song For America” and their only blues track where Steve absolutely kills it called "Lonely Street."

Brilliant analysis... I grew up in the 70's listening to so many of these great bands (Led Zeppelin, Yes etc.) and Kansas is one of my favorites. They were so creative and talented, and yes, they were a prog rock band.

This is the first time that I've seen you in my feed and what a wonderful surprise! As a writer, what pulls me into a piece, whether it's cinematic, literary, or musical, is the story. This has long been a favorite song due to the profound prose of the piece. I've always understood how music adds dimension to words and leads the listener toward a desired emotion, but I always felt that the words were the foundation. This is hubris, of course. After listening to you explain the genius of the musical composition of this song, I can see how intrinsically words and music are bound together and how each uplifts the other. Brava!

This is a very good example of Kansas, however, I always preferred their "Dust in the Wind" tune. I'm glad you discovered them. I have been listening to them even before they got famous from Topeka, Ks. I think they were all classically trained, at least that was often the route for us boomers. They have a very long list of tunes (early 70s to the early 90s and I think they are still touring some but I have lost track). Thanks for covering them. As to another artist, If you have not already looked at her I would suggest Phoebe Snow, "Poetry Man". She is really mellow.

100% agree. This album, "Two for the Show" is easily one of the Top 10 live albums ever. At the same height as the greatest live albums like "Live at Leeds", "Get Yer Yaya's Out", "Made in Japan" by Deep Purple or "Live at the Star Club" by Jerry Lee Lewis. Easily better and more exciting then any other prog bands live albums, including Yes, Genesis or ELP ones.

Fun Fact: their record contract required that they put out 3 albums in just over 2 years! Kerry Livgren (blonde haired guitarist) wrote all of their songs. He said in an interview that he would bring in the sheet music to a song and, while the rest of the band was learning that song, he would be working on the next one!
I’m sure that you noticed the talent of Steve Walsh (vocals, keyboards, percussion ) and Robby Steinhardt (the big, grizzly bear-looking guy who comes in at the onset of the song) also sang, played guitar, tambourine and other percussion and VIOLIN!There are so many great songs in their catalogue…The Wall, He Knew ; Point of Know Return (yes. That is how it’s spelled!); Sparks of the Tempest; Dust in the Wind; Cheyenne Anthem…the list goes on and on.
    They were PHENOMENAL live!!

As far as what to react to next, anything by Kim So Hyang is always welcome. 'Lean On Me', 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', and the Korean folk song 'Arirang Alone' are all world class performances. In the 70's, WPLJ in New York would play entire albums the day they were released. I can remember hearing it for the first time and thinking this is a hit. I remember thinking that this is one of the best rock songs I have ever heard.
I saw them in concert twice in the 70's. They were so professional and provided a wonderful experience. This was rare at the time. Most groups would show up so inebriated that the performance was not enjoyable.
Kerry Livgren would later become a Christian. He was so professional and knew the technical aspects of the music industry that he single handedly revolutionized Contemporary Christian music.
Kansas is a pivotal group in rock music on so many levels it begs you to spend more time on them. You will love "Dust in the Wind". My favorite is "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel".

🇨🇦 I have been trying to put this into the right words for months now !
There was a sort of musical renaissance which gave us the Classics by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Beethoven and Bach ! Then there was another phase in the 1920's 30's and 40's which gave us Jazz, Dance music, Big Bands and then Crooners !
Then came WWII and the freedoms won for us by that generation, who were so ready for peace and change, that they encouraged another music renaissance called Rock and Roll !
All of the music that had come before was laid out and exposed to this new generation of Baby Boomers ! This then, influenced and sparked new ways of approaching music ! Most of todays music is still influenced by most of the best music created between 1959 and 1989 !
It is unfortunate that nothing has sparked a new renaissance since !
But as you listen and react to the music from this era, also thank those that fought for our right to be mavericks, outlaws, and degenerates ! LOL
