His statement about helmets and concussion is partially incorrect, the hard shell is designed to distribute the force and reduce the risk of getting fractures, while the padding is designed to absorb some of the force and reduce the impact on the brain.

      "Doesn't stop concussion "
Reduce the impact on brain. Exactly it doesn't stop concussion, just reduces the impact because of the concussion. Jarrod is right

Australia is probably about to lose one of its best batting talents Will Puccoski due to repeated concussions.

Getting repeated concussions suggest (to me at least) that he is not one of (Australia's) best batting talents. Unless "our" batting talents are not as talented as I thought/they used to be.

@@4LayersOfStrength not all of his concussions are cricket related. that said, the insurance companies should step in at this point and say they won't insure him to play cricket any more.

@@4LayersOfStrength A lot of those concussions were caused by extremely unfortunate accidents like getting hit with a volleyball or in-close in the field. I do think they've caused him to become more susceptible to getting hit while batting though.

I think a lot of this come back to batting technique. I know Ian Chappell has written extensively on this over the years about pre helmet players training to duck and sway against short pitch bowling. Or moving outside the line if attempting a hook shot. Does coaching need to change, particularly in the formative years of young cricketers?

It is a Q collar that applied pressure on the Jugular Vein increaseing the blood volume in the head. More blood makes the Head move less .

It is an issue even though not as prevelant as contact sports ( rugby etc). Since helmets have come in, techniques against short bowling have declined and umpires have been reluctant to stop repeated intimidatory bowling particularly at tail ender's because they have a helmet on.

Hmmm...now that I think about it - Gautam Gambhir is perhaps also deeply affected by it.
I saw him take a nasty fall and hit his head really badly during the Lords Test of 2011. There's a slow-mo replay of his head hitting the turf, and you can literally see his face spasm, as if he's having a stroke. He's been hit on his head a few times too.
Every now and then you hear the kind of things that pour out of his mouth...

The only way that a helmet could reduce the type of concussive damage that Kimber is referring to is by making the helmet much heavier and insert large amounts of appropriate elastic cushioning. There are two aspects to the impact - energy and momentum. Current helmets are good and distributing the energy around the head. So instead of a large amount of energy in a small spot that fractures bones, the energy is spread around to much lower levels. There is still energy transferred to the brain in the form of waves and momentum. The momentum issue is where the skull is shifted suddenly and into the brain in the direction in which the ball is travelling. No matter what helmet is worn that change in momentum will always occur, but the effect on the brain can be reduced. By increasing the mass of the helmet more momentum is taken up by the helmet and less to the skull. By putting an appropriate elastic cushioning the acceleration of the skull will be reduced even with the same momentum change.
However, it is unlikely that any helmet that could markedly reduce the concussion effects would be wearable for long periods of time. It would be possible to work out what the requirements would be based on a maximal allowable acceleration.
A couple of points on what Jarrod said. There is no doubt that the current helmets must be, per impact, reducing the damaging effects to at least some degree, but obviously not down to zero.

The only sort of thing that could be even vaguely viable would be a full-face motorcycle helmet, and I don’t know if you’ve ever worn one but I’m sure not wearing one of those in the field all afternoon..

Woodpeckers tongues wrap around their brain which protect them from concussions, took me 2 seconds to research that

    • @chriswatson7965
      @chriswatson7965 4 місяці тому

@@njokic2176 Ok, I've found a couple of sites so at least it's forgivable. But the sites are a coarse misrepresentation of the original 2011 Chinese study, where the tongue/hyoid configuration was one factor in many in reducing energy transfer to the brain. It doesn't alter affect the change overall deceleration required which would be lethal to humans. I've made the change to my original comment nevertheless.

I disagree- I don't think helmets stop concussions, what they do is reduce the severity of one. Yes, by definition that would then reduce the number of concussions that affect you in any noticeable way, but I think it's important to say this right, because as has been pointed out, kids seem to think a helmet is some magic shield.

  • @russhouldin5774

Good conversation as usual but the concussion hazard in cricket is much less than in NFL or rugby or boxing. Take NFL linemen. Their brains get jolted on every play and there may be as many as 200 plays in a game, I doubt if any cricketer has had 200 blows to the helmet over their entire career. As to whether helmets have reduced injuries I've never seen any actual facts. I think for players of Bumble's generation and earlier an awareness of danger was part of what, as it were, became hardwired into their movements from an early age and they simply had far fewer instances of being hit on the head. The danger from heading in footy is wildly exaggerated. I've looked at the studies that supposedly support handwringing and they dont.

REdiculous discussion, players in previous eras played without helmets and the bowling was just as fast and it was ferocious. In fact what has skewed the game is the introduction of helmets. It gives batsmen rediculous advantahe over bowlers. lap sweeping fast bowling is rediculous, Batsmen were brave previously, that's why there is no comparison between Sobers, Richards and any current day player
