While I mostly agree, it also makes sense that money-smart parents would raise money-smart kids. Especially if they own a business, the kid could keep it going with some acquired know-how and in that sense have a huge "head start."

Thank you Dave!!! This mindset angers me. I worked at Wal-Mart for a few years, and started using the phrase "Walmart mentality". More than half the people I came across, didnt take any responsibility for the situation they were in, and blamed it on everything around them. This was a huge reason why I left. I couldn't keep surrounding myself with this type of thinking, and hoping it didn't rub off on me.

I used to work at a Wal-Mart too and I totally agree. Worst part is that mindset permeates the entire company much further up the ladder than I thought - it wasn't just the minimum wage folks thinking that way; it was several layers of management too. In fact the upper management seemed to encourage it. Keeps the masses in line 🙄
Very sad, esp. since from what I know of Sam Walton, that's not at all what his company started as/ what he envisioned.

I'm a die hard liberal but 100% agree with everything Dave illustrated in this video. I'm a liberal because I believe we should hold the government responsible for providing a certain benchmark for a quality of life, however the governments involvement (or lack of) should never influence the individuals ability to persevere in their own situation. I think college should be free and we as a society would prosper more if that was the case, however I don't use that as an excuse to not pay back my student loans and keep myself in the gutter.

Dave says 'that's not what I meant' when talking about his tweet. But when responding to arguments that rich people get ahead by being dishonest or self serving he gives a really poor example. What about companies buying rights to life saving drugs and bumping the price by %1000's points? What about work places paying their staff as little as possible while giving themselves huge bonuses, not depending on performance? There are plenty of people who become wealthy and do it in an honest way. However there are also loads of wealthy people who got there by doing whatever it took to make money. It's easy to find a real world example if you look.

    • @pirizzo

I can tell you the average person who makes a lot of money either has a corporate position that pays them a lot or starts a business where they bet the farm on an initial capital investment and it paid off. Both of things are pretty serendipitous. Incidentally, Dave never actually tells you what rich people do. Well, for starters based on my assertion they either fit into a corporate mold or they take pretty big risk, among a myriad of other qualities. Hard work is just one component. Smart financial decisions are just a single component. If Dave really knew what he was talking about, he wouldn't be a radio host because he would actually have a business, instead of just talking about business.

You may not necessarily prosper by charging nothing for a fast repair. If everyone is told they work for free or cheap and then people go there based on that info and they get charged $300 in labor for a much larger job they will feel ripped off because they were told they are cheap. Ask Louis Rossmann on that one. If you don't put a little value to the work you do, even if it takes you 5 minutes, the person on the other side of the counter couldn't have done that work in 10 years. You have the knowledge and the skill to do it that they don't; charge for it. Don't rip them off, but don't undervalue yourself. At the computer shop I work at most people are willing to pay and want to pay for a 5 minute fix because they couldn't do it no matter how hard they tried.

Great video Dave. I believe self awareness is the key to sucesss. Money is just a tool that you use or lose. And the only commodity that is equal in life is time. What sets people's life apart is their thoughts. That's why information is key. Answers and knowledge are everywhere there if you ask the right questions and have the desire you'll seek and find them. The challenge is out of 168 hours in a week how many people that are not in education sit down and study. As the key to wealth building is contribution, adding value to the market place/other people's life. That's why the best investment you can ever make is in yourself. Because as you can become more you can have more. Jay Riley.

That doesn't mean that I don't want the wealthy to pay their fare share (Which I definitely am a part of) and to use that money not to bomb poor countries around the world but to give our citizens healthcare as a right. And to take care of our 3 million homeless veterans here at home.

Do you think me writing a check is enough to get the 1.4 million homeless veterans care that they need?
In the mean while, we are spending 700 billions to send to send our kids to war, but when they comeback is when we stew them over. Think about that.
      We need everyone chipping in.

It took me 30 years to fully realize that most people don't want freedom or social mobility. People who actually want that are an elite few, and you can't tell who they are by looking at them. Most people crave for someone to tell them they are nothing, and they will always be nothing. Then the pressure and responsibility are gone. Most people are happy with no money and no responsibility.

Dave I love your podcast and outlook regarding personal finance. I also happen to lean progressive, believing that society benefits from providing social services (education, eldercare, healthcare, police, fire, defense, etc.) to its citizens. It's frustrating when you deride people who don't understand your message as leftist or liberals. You can believe in progressive policies and also have a sound personal finance mentality. They aren't mutually exclusive. Thanks for everything you do.

well something is amiss in the credit reporting business. my family member just declared a Chap 7 AGAIN , 3rd time. They have a spending problem, and collect credit cards like baseball cards.
not even 4 months after discharge, they ALREADY have another CC unsecured w/ $2k limit and their fico is over 700!
Now, this infuriates me! for many reasons, but mostly because neither of them have impulse control. they spend endless amounts of money on frivilous things like eating out or travel, gambling and toys. They use Bankruptcy like its a game, and then brag about how they just go right back into debt they can not afford. Both are getting close to retirement, neither have a pension but SS.
So if there are NO CONSEQUENCES to declaring bankruptcies over and over, how can ANYONE who plays FAIR by sacrifice, saving and giving feel good while cheaters, liars and THIEVES seem to have it all OVER AND OVER AGAIN?
and why are credit reporting agencies not BANGING FICOs harder after chapter 7s?
IMO... no one should be allowed to do it more then twice EVER!
We ALL pay for that behavior with HIGHER prices!

Are you liberal concerning foreign, social and economic policy?
I'd be considered a right leaning centrist. Socially conservative and Christian, full capitalism up to the point avoiding crony capitalism and monopolies. Example, Twitter and Facebook can do whatever they want. It's their company. But they need to be limited because they've become the public forum where information is spread by public and private citizens. I forget what the term is, but companies like Facebook and Twitter need to be fined when shadow banning is prominent on their platforms.

Take an honest look at some democratic policies such as pensions and overspending peoples money. New York is close to bankruptcy even with high taxes... Illinois has insane property taxes. What is the result... people are leaving those places.

    • @Loathomar
      @Loathomar 5 років тому

Yes, the economies of Califorina and NY are so bad because of taxes that they have a GSP (GDP) per capita of $74,205 and $85,746, respectively. While the ultra conservative states of Arkansas and
Mississippi are at $42,454 and $37,948. Conservative states sure seem to be doing great. Really, the only time Conservative states do well economically is when they have massive natural resources and a low population. Alaska does well with 7th highest income per capita, $73,205, but 1/2 of all non government revenue is oil based. North Dakota and WY also do well for the same reason, lots of oil/gas and a small population. By the time you get to a conservative state who's population is more then a large city, we get to Texas, who ranks 20th and below average for per capita GDP.
