Please let me know what other parts of building our house you want to see in more detail!! We have a billion catalogues. I could literally do a Twitch stream going through them if people are interested, lmao.
We were very fortunate to find a decent-sized plot of land so we'll have a ton of real plants outside as well!! And we're also designing windows everywhere so we'll be able to see them all the time. :D
Well we accepted 5 freaking sponsorships this month, so that definitely helps! But on the boring side of things, Japan actually has some pretty incredible housing loans. There's a type backed by the government called Flat 35 (based off of you paying it off in 35 years, though the actual timing can differ) where interest rates can be as low as 1%, AND if the person whose name is on the loan becomes incapacitated and unable to work (or heaven forbid, dies), the entire loan can even be forgiven and their family can stay in the house. Historically, the Japanese government was very worried about providing housing for all its citizens after WWII and they took a lot of steps to make it easy and affordable for everyone. Anyway, we have a great loan and our interest rate is so good that our housing company (through which, long story short, the loan is provided) even suggested that if we're able to pay it off early we instead invest the money, and pay the loan off later. That said, we still want to try to pay it off as quickly as possible so we don't get stuck with troublesome bills in the future should something happen to one of us. We're doing our best to earn what we can right now! We just came out with new merch last month, and we're working with a few different companies in other ways that we'll talk about later on!

(Those vertical lights in the mirrors might make a short space feel taller, but not illuminate the whole room, so you would need like, recessed light for general area lighting. That is the idea, I don't do residential stuff normally)
This was really interesting to read! Thanks for posting this comment. :D Some really good advice here that I'll have to keep in mind, should I ever one day get my own home and be able to afford one. Lighting really is everything. lol

Rachel is right, America's schools have incredibly cheap tiles for the floors and the ceilings are almost always missing a giant one. To think that schools could have beautiful hardwood is paradise.
In uk atleast our school halls / dining areas in older schools are wood (some have a thick seethrough gloss on to protect from the floorpaints for sports markers) and they’re cleaned and buffed by cleaners.

Hey guys! I saw that you are struggling with the idea of style and trends. Me and my mom we've been trying to renovate our summer house for the last 5 years so I tought that I can give you guys some ideas. 1. Instead of following the trends try to imagine what style you feel most comfortable in. (as far as I see from your last two houses you guys seem to enjoy Scandi vibes) 2. Using natural materials is a great idea! Just like you said nature never gets dated. Try to look for the real materials not the immitations. 3. Try to create a moodboard before you start your project. Also making a general color scheme really helps. 4. From my regular trips to hardware store I learned one thing: Materials change each year. Ask people is the model you choose is a constant or seasonal in case anything happens in the future. (the tiles we used in the balcony became dated around the time we finished and could not be found anywhere) 5. Using wood planks instead of laminant is a great idea. However humidity is a huge problem in where I live so we opted for seramic tiles which looks just like wood. Most importantly don't stress about it. You can always change the way your house looks with small diy projects. Good luck guys!
Wow, I remember when they were still talking about dreaming to build their own house one day, and now, when those dreams are slowly - but steadily! - becoming reality, it's so cool to see!

I really like the way Rachel and Jun do sponsorships. They make them sound interesting and it sounds much more fluid than just reading a script. I hope that you guys are able to get all of your dream doors!!! :)
And I love the fact that they included a little bar on the bottom of the screen to show how long the ad takes so if anyone feels really inconvenienced, they can skip it or at least judge how much longer it will be! It's so thoughtful of them and I haven't seen anybody else do this yet.
@@alja4991 Actually EvanandKatelyn do it too! They have a lot of cat projects so I discovered them from Rachel and Jun. They're really funny and do a lot of cool projects

Jun & Rachel: has tons of furniture with surface Sponsor time: Use cats to put item....😄 I agree with Rachel on the mirrors, I don't like segmented mirror, I like one big mirror, also don't like tiles flooring, prefer wood plank flooring or marble, but that expensive...
segmented mirrors usually have a cabinet behind it though so you can open it from whichever door you want without having to open this huge single like 2ft wide mirror door. i think it helps in a small bathroom

When we pick out new floor tiles we like to do the Keyring Test. Go to the store and (with permission) drop a heavy keyring on the display tiles to see if they can withstand the impact.
We got floor samples and scratched them as much as we could. The least scratched is the winner and we now have amazing floors without spending a lot on real hardwood.
Remember to bring a glass with you to check if the glass can withstand the impact if you'd drop one. I'd recommend rather soft surfaces, especially for the kitchen. (Linoleum?)

I've been watching SO much of the show Hometown (in the US) that my husband and I have the biggest itch to design and build our own home. Yesterday I nearly bought an old sideboard for $100 to turn into a bathroom vanity, and we don't even own a home yet, lol.. Anyway, it's fascinating to see the process in Japan, so please please keep documenting everything!! ❤
loving all of the videos this month! I dont really mind the sponsorships, they're not too intrusive and personally I always keep in mind that sponsorships greatly help creators. Would love a twitch livestream looking at catalogues
I’d be interested in eventually seeing how really old traditional styles have been made modern there. I love really old buildings but obviously that can be problematic. Are there any really cool traditional things you want?
That would actually be a really interesting video! We're not incorporating blatantly traditional concepts like tatami mats or lowered floors or anything, but the sliding doors and our interior cat/garden room (nakaniwa) are both rooted in traditional design. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely going to make a video about this!
I've heard a lot of companies have yearly budgets so at the end of the year they take the extra and pump it into things like sponsorships. so that's why you got more offers. So excited to see your new house and don't mind seeing the sponsors at all :)
there's no reason to avoid anything in particular if you know yourself and it's something you actually like. they're evidently building for themselves and not for resale value, so....
I absolutely don't mind sponsorship, most of UA-camrs do sponsored videos from time to time. Also, i like the way you include sponsorship information in your videos and the products itself look interesting too, not some annoying mobile game ads.
As someone who used to clean apartments, the split mirrors are ANNOYING to clean. Best of luck to you both in your home journey and thanks for sharing it with us!
jun and rachel building their own home has me dreaming of making my own home with a small art studio with maple wood flooring. i absolutely adore the natural aesthetic theyre going for :))
I feel Jun's pain on the countertop height- I had my bathroom counter and sink built 5 inches taller than standard, and if I can ever afford a kitchen reno would do the same in there!
I wanna see a video of interior cat stuff-cat shelves, cat trees, etc.! I’ve been REALLY curious about where you guys get a lot of your cat stuff for a while; it’s so hard to find quality cat products here in America. Everything is focused on dogs 😢
I’d really like to see your thought process on picking bedroom floors/ walls etc. Also what your “must haves” and “absolutely nots” for each room. I’m so glad your cats love their gifts!!! It so cute to see them 😊
My fear with sliding doors is that sometimes, as they age, they tend to break/jam after all the sliding back and forth. But it could depend on quality too of course. But make sure it's easily fixed if it's something you choose. 🙂
I love that you guys are sharing your house journey with us!! I also love how your cats have their own room, its not like they need it they basically own your apartment already!! Rachel you have inspired me to start trying to rescue stray cats and regime them so thank you so much! Jun you have also inspired me to try and start cooking meals other than Mac and cheese lol.
So, I just splurged and bought myself the earbuds. I have been wanting wireless earbuds for some time, but have put it off. Jun talking about them convinced me. I am excited! If it means getting Jun, Rachel, Haku, Nagi, Poki, and Pichi their dream home, I would even be cool with seeing more than one sponsorship per video.
In my experience, wood around areas that often get wet, like sinks and bath areas, it often rots over time. Parts of the wooden counter around my sink have turned black or grey despite wiping it down after every use. Sure it can be fixed, but that's a lot of work and in some cases money. Maybe my counter was just never laquered that well to begin with, but it's still more risky. As you said, stone is timeless so that would be a good option for any sink counter imo.
I feel like stone, linoleum, granite and other surfaces like that are good for more dirty areas, like bathrooms and kitchens. Places that get wet easily shouldn't generally have or be made of wood or the cheap fake wood. Wood is great for the living room and bedrooms. I love stone/granite looks. They are definitely timeless.
I could never have those cabinets with the bar on the top they were talking about, we have the same ones at my work and I would just have ptsd everytime id go to the bathroom
Yall sold me on the earbuds. Has anyone else in the comments tried them? I have really little ears and I have a hard time finding wireless ones that fit.
I really enjoy looking at homes way out of my price range online and these videos totally scratch that itch for me lol. I would happily watch a twitch stream of the catalogs lol! Also yes get that coin!!! You guys deserve it and deserve a nice home
Honestly Rachel & Jun dont worry about the sponsors, it feels like helping a friend and we're happy for you guys to make some money so you can lead a happy life!!
I'm here in Florida in the US and there are so many aspects of Japanese design that I'm intending to bring into my first home. I'm positively in love with the split dry/wet bath design, vertical soaking tubs, as well as having a Genkan/mud room that also has space for a washdown/pet bath area. So many neat ideas! I can't wait to see your new home
i desperately need to know about japan’s 100s of styles of interior doors now also since you’re buying a plot of land for the house i’d love to know what y’all have in mind for potential garden plans and how those vary vs american suburb gardens
i really don’t know why they ‘excuse’ for sponsorship, their videos are so geniune, honest and truly informative. you deserve more of them in my opinion.
I LOVED this video. I find the trends and styles interesting as someone living in the US, and it was so relaxing to watch :) Please show us more of the house building process!

Me: rewatches ads so Rachel and Jun can get more money to afford the fixtures they want 😘
me too XD
Smart people think the same😉
You have to click and be redirected to the website of the advertiser. Watching all the way through is a waste of time
using your cat as a product showcase background is amazing. i love it.
Rachel: explaining stuff
Jun: oh hey, c a t
I've heard a lot of companies have yearly budgets so at the end of the year they take the extra and pump it into things like sponsorships. so that's why you got more offers. So excited to see your new house and don't mind seeing the sponsors at all :)
The headphones on Haku is everything
And the 'best product model' - award goes to..
HAKU
Jun getting constantly distracted by the cats is so on brand.
custom equalization based on your hearing ability sounds incredible
Totally agree about avoiding "trendy" looks when it comes to home design
there's no reason to avoid anything in particular if you know yourself and it's something you actually like. they're evidently building for themselves and not for resale value, so....
I actually love y’all’s sponsorships! You guys actually take time to give honest reviews on the product. Take MORE sponsorships! We are here for it!
There’s no one else I can think of that’s more deserving to take a sponsorship!
I absolutely don't mind sponsorship, most of UA-camrs do sponsored videos from time to time. Also, i like the way you include sponsorship information in your videos and the products itself look interesting too, not some annoying mobile game ads.
not only would I watch a video on the world of Japanese doors, but i would rewatch it at least 3 times
I love the natural wood and stone options! They’re always so calming. Like an expensive spa.
So cute, Haku just lying there and being used as a live scenic background for the bluetooth earphones. So adorable!
As someone who used to clean apartments, the split mirrors are ANNOYING to clean.
Best of luck to you both in your home journey and thanks for sharing it with us!
I will never get tired of
Rachel: talks
Jun: records nearest cat
I'd like more interior design videos, it's fascinating how other countries do stuff differently
jun and rachel building their own home has me dreaming of making my own home with a small art studio with maple wood flooring. i absolutely adore the natural aesthetic theyre going for :))
Natural themes with windows, plants, cats everywhere etc it's going to be such a calming and pretty house when it's done!!!
7:54 They put the options on a fricken cat. Now that's how you sell earbuds!
I really appreciate how you guys are showing off your entire housing journey. It's interesting to see your thoughts on everything. 😊
I feel Jun's pain on the countertop height- I had my bathroom counter and sink built 5 inches taller than standard, and if I can ever afford a kitchen reno would do the same in there!
Rachel:admires floors
Jun: **war flashbacks**
I wanna see a video of interior cat stuff-cat shelves, cat trees, etc.! I’ve been REALLY curious about where you guys get a lot of your cat stuff for a while; it’s so hard to find quality cat products here in America. Everything is focused on dogs 😢
I approve of your sponsorship-style! Any extra second with cats in frame are good seconds. Really hope you're able to build your dream home!
I feel like a lot of the design aspects (like sliding doors and ledge handles on drawers) are so popular because they're incredibly space-efficient!
Mom just noticed how Haku and Nagi look like Rachel and Poki looks like Jun and I live for it!
I feel like after living in an apartment with no dishwasher for so long, having one would feel like a luxury. I need a little baby one!
I’d really like to see your thought process on picking bedroom floors/ walls etc. Also what your “must haves” and “absolutely nots” for each room. I’m so glad your cats love their gifts!!! It so cute to see them 😊
I second that!
I like this idea!
My fear with sliding doors is that sometimes, as they age, they tend to break/jam after all the sliding back and forth. But it could depend on quality too of course. But make sure it's easily fixed if it's something you choose. 🙂
That is a good point! Have you ever had a sliding door come off its track and land on your big toe? OUCH!! It's happened to my sister. 🦶🥺😧
You can also make a good homemade mac n cheese.
Get those sponsorships! Everyone needs to make a living. 💕
Same i have two different size ear canals. The tragedy. I haven't tried them. But my last ones died so it's time to get new good ones
I haven't tried that product specifically but I have other ear buds from that brand that are great!
Rachel and Jun: talking about toilets
Me: it's a tankless job
even though its not my house, somehow I always got really excited whenever you guys update on the house.
im here for the hundreds of hours of building a house in japan.
me to :)
I really enjoy looking at homes way out of my price range online and these videos totally scratch that itch for me lol. I would happily watch a twitch stream of the catalogs lol! Also yes get that coin!!! You guys deserve it and deserve a nice home
Keep doing sponsors, get that money for the house!
Jun: stops petting poki for one second to film Rachel
Poki: MWEOW how dare you
i desperately need to know about japan’s 100s of styles of interior doors now
also since you’re buying a plot of land for the house i’d love to know what y’all have in mind for potential garden plans and how those vary vs american suburb gardens
I've never thought about that, but using natural home decor is brilliant!
i really don’t know why they ‘excuse’ for sponsorship, their videos are so geniune, honest and truly informative. you deserve more of them in my opinion.
I LOVED this video. I find the trends and styles interesting as someone living in the US, and it was so relaxing to watch :) Please show us more of the house building process!
