Hardwood floors are common in houses (especially in more traditional houses), but the vinyl/laminate floors are much more common in apartments due to their cheaper price. Laminate flooring (often marked as "sheet" flooring) seems like the largest market for new home builders right now--most showrooms we visited primarily offered laminate flooring. When we expressed concern with the sturdiness and longevity of laminate flooring, basically everyone just started recommending us higher-end versions of laminate flooring that have better sealing layers on top... Hardwood flooring is incredibly expensive in Japan. The catalogue we have shows prices up to TWICE the cost of the engineered hardwood we chose in this video.
At least there are tons of incredible wallpaper options that are relatively cheap! And there are quite a few places to get decently priced tile (mainly for walls, but for flooring as well). As with everything, you get what you pay for when it comes to quality and design... And of course, designer options exist as well, with absurdly unaffordable prices.

We put engineered hardwood floors in my parents house and it was the best decision we made about the house. We’ve lived in it for over a year and there is not a single scratch no matter how many pots and pans we drop on the floor, very much worth the price.
I would, if it wasn't so expensive. Q_Q Wish I could spend 40 monthly bucks on sweets. :(

**Hardwood tip** Don't use sawdust and glue to fill a dent, just put water on it. The wood swells and usually plumps up enough to get rid of the dent or groove you're trying to fix. Let it dry and re-coat with the top coating. I've done this on my floor, and table, and more (I have kids and cats, haha!) Good luck!! 😁

I can confirm this as a joiner (wood working) it depends on the dent size but small dents can easily be removed that way, sand the dent a little to remove the oiled/varnished surface and but a ball of wet toilet paper on it. Wait a few hours, (best over night) and the next day remove let it dry, and redo the surface. I will say to be careful depending on the texture of your floor, if it's a brushed wood texture then don't sand it at all, because it will be noticeable especially when light hits it.

If you do not tape and mud the seams and screws in the drywall they will show through the wallpaper. Also you need to apply wallpaper sizing liquid to the walls and let it dry before you paper. If you do not apply sizing and later want to change the wallpaper you will never be able to remove wallpaper without damaging drywall. Trust me you do not want to skip any of these steps. don't worry about it, they are not the one who will apply the wallpaper and I think what she meant is that the company does everything for you if you choose wallpaper (prepare the wall right + apply it) but if you want to do paint instead they just leave the wall bare and you have to do the mudding yourself. I don't think any steps will be missed by the company while applying the wallpaper!
I hope you are right! I watched that bit again and I'm still not so sure. I don't know how it works in Japan, but in North America, drywall by your contractor is usually finished ( mudded, sanded, and painted with at least one coat of primer) and in most cities, electricians will not do finishing work like installing fixtures (lights, outlets, etc) until the walls and ceilings have been primed. And like Beverly said, wallpaper on an unfinished/unprepped surface is a NO-NO. Every single bump and dip will show. Unfinished drywall is porous. It absorbs the paste which makes it impossible to take your wallpaper off without tearing the drywall paper with it, damaging the drywall. That's why you need to seal the drywall with primer or wallpaper sizing on plaster.

And Rachel and Jun chose a company that's not cheap. If they suggest wallpaper as the default, it's because they will apply it for you and the right way. Of course Rachel doesn't explain that word for word in the video but it's logical
@@obsessedme5484 Thanks. Totally get what you mean. Sorry if I came off antagonist. (I was actually trying not to. Sigh... trying to convey tone in text, am I right? Sorry again!!) Like previous posters, not attacking Rachel or anyone, just concerned about the wallpaper and would appreciate some clarification/elaboration. I'm very curious how they do it in Japan/if Rachel and Jun knows how it works. If it is drywall and not some other finishing wall board material, the company would have to mud, sand, and prime it in order to apply wallpaper anyway... so why can't the company just do the drywall work up to priming so that homeowners can paint it themselves? Do they do something else to the drywall? Is it special Japanese wallpaper?

Y'all are SO much smarter than we were on the flooring. We opted for the laminate due to the price and we had a small leak that destroyed the flooring just a few years later costing us a LOT more for replacing the floor. Since then we have a hatred for laminate flooring. My wife & I are so very happy and excited for y'all!!! We're looking forward to future videos. Many hugs from the crazy Texas couple!

we have pergo flooring & it is already scratching/denting/lifting in the corners and feels bumpy underneath it! the landlords put it in like a year ago.. we pointed it out to them and all they said was “yeah they don’t make things like they used to” and i hope when we move they don’t take away our deposit because of it :(

Unfortunately, when there is a leak, only vinyl doesn't warp. The worst is hardwood flooring, followed by eng. wood and laminate that warp in the core. However you can get laminate that is waterproof now, quite expensive, but is sealed in the groove. If you need a bomb proof flooring then luxury vinyl is the way, there are some very realistic wood effects available. (E.g. Amtico)
@@valentinatodero6748 You can get porcelain tile now that is stamped to resemble wood and it conducts heat and is quite durable and not cold, my friend has some in her kitchen and it's gorgeous! As well as waterproof and scratch resistant. I would worry about dropping things on it but she said she's dropped dishes on it and it's held up (the dishes bit the dust though!)

I am an american residential architect and watching your journey has been fascinating. Such a different process, but i think "builder" homes in America have similar issues of it being "semi-custom" meaning they only have a catalog of options to choose from. I have it in my kitchen. It can "dent" (retain impressions). For example, where my fridge is, there are dents where the feet of it sit. It can also "snag". When I was redoing the kitchen, the fridge was sitting in the middle of the floor. When we slid the fridge into place it caught the floor. It did not rip, but the snag is still there.
same experience! except mine actually did rip unfortunately while replacing the fridge. however objects that are that heavy won't get moved usually so it shouldn't matter too much.

@@edana42 Oh no haha, don't worry too much. I believe we dragged the fridge a bit since it was so hard to lift, so that was probably the cause!
By the sounds of it it will be in the bathroom - so hopefully shouldn't be a problem as most bathroom furniture is fixed in place and very unlikely to move. We had cushioned vinyl in our old rented property too and it dented so easily.

I have a child and 1 cat and let me tell you, I absolutely cannot stand the carpet in my home as a result. Potty training, upset tummy’s, food on the carpet, the cat being sick, the cat having a wet bum, muddy paws, bringing a dead bird inside. All this happened on my carpet. No amount of cleaning makes me forget. I’m changing it as soon as possible to a washable floor 😅
YES My house only has a few carpeted rooms but they're so gross and matted from 1 yours of use by little kids, dags w/ bladder issues, and cats+kittens. It doesn't help that we're all sensitive or allergic to dust and animals. We've been meaning to pull up the carpet for close to ten years now haha
Irk we thinking buying a house with light carpet 2013 glad we didn't get it now. We got a house with laminate so much easier to clean.

We’ve taken out all the carpet in our home due to allergies and sinus trouble. I find it so much easier to keep the floor clean. Luckily the carpet we had covered hard wood flooring so we were able to just sand and refinish the wood floors. Only place that we’ll need to install flooring is in the room that started life as the garage since that has a concrete floor. We’re going to be installing sustainable bamboo flooring in there.
The first thing my mom did when we bought our house like 8 years ago was rip off the carpet and change the floors to laminate 😂 and while I miss the soft feeling of carpet, spills that happen makes me thank laminate flooring 😂
I'm in America and never thought I'd use anything your channel has ever taught me but within the last 3 months I've wound up with a feral cat and a house I need to decorate from the ground up so guess what suddenly has been super relevant???
It can actually put a lot of pressure on anyone to make important decisions like these, since you more or less only get to make them once. Especially if you intend to live in the house for the rest of your lives.
I remember having a sort of decision-fatigue after a couple of months set in.

Oh man, it's genuinely been one of the most stressful times we've had together! Especially when the options are both more expensive and lower quality than we'd like. We've had to take a couple week or so long breaks here and there from thinking about our house because we just couldn't handle trying to make any more decisions.
@@RachelandJunAdventures It is good to just completely take yourselves out of that headspace from time to time. Not to mention, it'll help you look at things with a fresh eye once you get back to it.
It’s also worth acknowledging that some decisions won’t work out the way you want no matter how hard you try, there’s no way to anticipate everything perfectly ahead of time. You just gotta remember it’s not the end of the world, things can be tweaked and altered as you get to living with stuff!
It is the same with even pre-fab homes like trailer homes.

Hello, Interior Designer here! Make sure with the vinyl flooring in wet areas like the bathroom that you have a water resistant adhesive! The current apartment I'm living in did not use a water resistant adhesive to adhere the vinyl planks (like the wood-look one) to the floor and now they are peeling up, warped, and a falling off/sliding all over the place. I would personally never put vinyl in bathrooms for this reason but I really do love vinyl because it is affordable and can look like literally anything. If you have the planks that interlock or use an adhesive that is resistant to water, you should be fine!
The cushion flooring for the bathrooms (including the one in our apartment now) is actually all one solid sheet so we don't have to worry about interlocking tiles! And it is waterproof. Each specific flooring option notes whether it's okay to use in a bathroom or not.
In any case, our builder is installing it and we get a really good warranty on everything they install, which is one of the reasons they're so strict about what products we can buy. One of the bathroom companies we were looking at earlier on our builder refused to install since that company didn't have the documentation or test data or something to prove it could meet a certain standard.
But I will still keep this in mind about vinyl planks AND adhesives! Thank you! I'll make sure everyone in the house knows not to ignore puddles or spills on the vinyl flooring in other rooms just in case...
@@RachelandJunAdventures That's really interesting! In the US almost all vinyl flooring is in planks like the samples you showed so making it into a single sheet would definitely fix that issue. I'm glad that Japanese builders seem to be a lot more transparent about the specifics around materials. In the US they aren't as forthcoming about these details, hence my bathroom flooring disaster.
I'm glad y'all are doing your research and also trying to build sustainably or for longevity! That's something that's really important to consider that a lot of people don't.

I'm in the US, and my family used sheet vinyl for our bathroom, so it is available here! We love it - it's so easy to clean and we don't have to worry about any seams, except at the edges of the room.
@@DemonFromMel That sounds like a first time DIY job or a bad contractor. Almost all states require a vapor barrier before you put down vinyl (or tile) and obviously the correct adhesive.
While an inspector couldn't check after the job is done, depending on the state there are stages of inspection for everything before the final install, even for remodels.
I had a friend who got a leak under her refrigerator that completely ruined all her kitchen floor in no time. Something about that foam layer is not waterproof and water gets in there and rots and you can see that on the surface of the floor. I don't like it. There is a stuff in the states I think made by Congoleum that water will never harm. Popular with the mid Century Modern crowd
A tip from when hubby and I had a house built, take photos or video every time something is done especially behind the walls stuff. It has come in handy when we needed to change things inside.
Also if the contractor messes something up.
University housing professional who designed a few residence halls in the States here: when Jun scratched his fingers on the flooring around @22:00 it reminded me of a tip: with any textured wood grain vinyl, check what furniture scuffs look like. On mid-to-darker colors they can be very noticeable, especially if it removes any shine or coating. For that reason I look for wood grain appearance that is flat to the touch when I need that color or tone of wood. All this said, LOVE your aesthetics!!

Ah yes. Her frustration with laminate is exactly why my parents replaced theirs with the vinyl planks and vinyl tiles. Sawdust and glue is a bad idea though. You don't want to do the water and swell method, there are lots you can get that have different color waxes you can melt into place.
Our apartment came with the wax for filling dents in the laminate flooring but it looks awful, lol. I think a big part of that is the hole being such a darker color than the print, though...
@@RachelandJunAdventures yeah. I can see that being the case. Hated selling laminate for that reason too. Much preferred the vinyl plank personally since it looked better. Not sure what brands you have available over there but the options look interesting
Waxes are very hit-or-miss. My husband and I own an art gallery and have to repair frames pretty regularly. For dark wood or flat finishes, wax is fine. Light wood is SO unforgiving when it comes to repairs, however, and matching the woodgrain pattern is impossible with wax. Try the water swell thing first, worst thing that happens is you try something else 🤷♀️ Each scratch is a precious memory, right? 😅😅
Last year, I replaced carpet with wood floor for the entire house mainly because my older cat was vomiting in anticipation of food in the morning routine. I spent $8,500 for the material and labor plus $1,600 for leveling. Leveling is done by pasting concrete on the floor to cover up dips and smooth out bumps. Leveling prep was clearly needed, but I just didn’t mentally prepare to pay extra and that hurt my feeling at the end. I would advise that you communicate to your home builder to make sure they level the floor as best they can in preparation to hand over to your floor company.
I'm hoping that's standard practice when building a new house.
Some advice: rethink of the carpet choice, it collects a lot dust and dirt and is very high maintenance. We used to have it in our home but we replaced it due to the maintenance. Also, the cushion flooring actually dents! Claw marks will penetrate it and heavy furniture will also make it dent.
Rachel and Jun got so much samples, they could use them to build a second house....

I love the way the house is turning out. I particularly love that glow in the dark wallpaper. The only thing I personally wouldn't do is fully carpet the upstairs with 4 cats. I feel like it will get so dirty so easily.
Yeah I winced when I heard them say they’re carpeting anything. Carpets collect a lot of dirt and allergens. For air quality I go with area rugs that I can more easily thoroughly clean and replace for places I need more cushion.
I think 1 carpeted room in the bedroom is all I would want because that's the cleanest room in my house
Yes, I can't understand why they want to use carpet. We have a carpeted staircase and it's hell to clean, especially when we still had a dog (even though she wasn't allowed up the stairs her hair was everywhere). Carpet collects dirt like a magnet collects metal dust and it's just as terrible to clean. That's why I'm such a big fan of tiles, they are cold in the summer and with heating they are really cozy (even without they aren't terribly cold) and they are easy to clean.
Yeah i wouldn't recommend carpet either. I don't think it would be hygienic and aesthetic
Tiles are a popular option where I live, but in Japan I think there are earthquake concerns to take into account. Maybe wooden floors are safer or easier to replace in case an earthquake happens.
I have lived in homes with and without carpet. I 100% preferred my homes without carpet. Having hardwood house wide makes cleaning so much easier. Even with an amazing vacuum carpets hold onto so much and with cats I really wouldn't recommend carpet since the cats can pee on it, scratch it and hair builds up in it. And if you decide you can't live without carpet just purchase individual carpets that can be much easier cleaned, moved around and aired out.
We put in engineered hardwood floors in our condo and it is still holding up nicely after 15 years. Good choice!
Oh, if you go for wallpaper, which it seems you'll do, make sure it is something you can clean. Very roughly textured wallpaper can collect dust like whoa.
I had not considered wallpaper catching dust... At the very least we've been making sure to only select wallpaper that can get wet, so I'm guessing we'd be able to clean that. I'll make sure to ask next time we visit the showroom!
@@RachelandJunAdventures When I was at uni I took odd jobs, one of them being that of a house cleaner. I loved it, and gained experience like the one I just told you about.
Before, I never would've guessed that textured wallpaper needs regular dusting.

Yeah my friend had walls with finishing that had a lot of texture (like millimeters deep grooves) and they absolutely hated it. Dust was impossible to clear completely. None of your wallpaper looks deep as that though.
@@emmaatkinson7379 my parents have a statement wall with flocking on it. That stuff is a dust magnet. Looks and feels nice, but I wouldn't recommend it.
@@RachelandJunAdventures Same rule applies for ceilings! Make sure it's super, super smoothed. No popcorn ceilings, or textured paints! Especially in a kitchen, holy smokes is it a pain to clean with all that texture

My knowledge of things that soak up smells is that usually, those things eventually end up just eventually smelling bad themselves. D: Are you certain that doesn't happen with this?
Also because I don't know if you saw my comment on one of the last videos, since I made it pretty late, I want to say this again: You spoke of having a window in your closet. Be careful about this! I don't know the orientation of that window or the amount of sunlight that spot might get, but sunlight has a bad habit of sun-bleaching things, especially reds. Speaking from experience. And I guess if the sun gets too hot in there, if you have anything like like a faux leather or something then it could get tacky in the heat.

The answer is UV cling film. Added it to all the windows and has an added bonus as a privacy tint. Blocks uv and heat and now I can buy normal furniture,clothes, and picture frames again. (I have a few antique paintings that CAN'T be matted under glass, nothing fancy but they're sentimental pieces from an antique store). Even bigger bonus, the window films prevent glass from getting all over the floor if a window breaks as well.
My Dad worked summers building homes, he actually built his own home. Mudding is not an easy job. When I had my kitchen redone, I hired a professional for that. lol. We didn't need that stress.
Glow in the dark constillation ceililing wallpaper is the only thing I miss about the house I grew up in as a child. It's amazing .100,000,000 % recommend
I could never design my own home IRL, so I do it on House Flipper instead. Also that glow in the dark wallpaper, I love it and I need it.

My father is a craftsman when it comes to tiles, some advice I would give for the few tiles areas: Make sure to avoid acidic cleaners because those can slowly desolve the grout line material or even damage whole tiles if they are made out of natural material instead of ceramic. So check what tiles you are using to not damage them when cleaning. Apart from that tiles are super easy to clean and will look nice for a long time.

Just a warning when it comes to vinyl flooring, the quality varies greatly depending on what kind of vinyl flooring you get. It can end up looking really warn in 10 years. If you're doing a high traffic area porcelain tiles will last.
For example, my house is 20 years old and my porcelain tiles in my bathrooms still look brand new. My mom got her kitchen renovated when I was a teenager and now her vinyl flooring in her kitchen is really worn looking and now need to be replaced. The workers at Home depot kept reassuring her how durable vinyl flooring is.(She's not happy) So I'm currently helping her pick out her new flooring throughout her house. She's going with hardwood throughout the entire house and porcelain in the kitchen and bathrooms.
I'm not sure how pricey porcelain tiles are in Japan though. They're quite cheap in the west.
They're not cheap. I'm currently redoing my kitchen flooring coincidentally too cos of vinyl tiles that were already in. Over time it's definitely more value though to go with porcelain
I had similar experience with vinyl flooring. Bought ones that were not cheap and with pretty good declared hardness, and they turned out to be easily scratchable :( Good job by R&J for choosing so carefully!
In my country it's difficult to get hardwood floors (really expensive), so tiles are almost the default. So much easier to clean and maintain.
Gotta go with flooring professionals over the big retail stores when you're doing a project that big. The big box stores only have the cheap stuff. :)
with vinyl the important thing to look at is the wear layer, essentially a protective layer that determines how easily it'll scratch. for commercial you'd typically have a 20-30 mil layer. residential obviously doesnt need to be as durable, but it'll make a big difference whether you go with one that's 5 mil vs one that's 12 mil! it's not the only factor, and some manufacturers have rly good coatings that let them have thinner wear layers that are more durable, but it's a good starting point when you're looking for products. even if something is expensive, if it has a low wear layer, it'll more likely scratch easier.
In case you hadn't already thought about this, it might be worth getting some extra carpet/flooring and store some (if there's not already a warranty on your flooring). This way, in the off chance something really damages the floor, or you stain some carpet, you can replace it with a new piece. Otherwise you might have a hard time finding similar patterns or colours in the future. Just a thought.

Save the end cuts when they install the wood flooring, then you can save it and use it to make the sawdust glue mixture or use them to replace small sections. We did this when we had our flooring installed and it has saved our butts a few times.
The wood you chose sounds sooo good. Friends of mine had light wood floors without good protective varnish and they had to basically run around with a cloth and wood cleaner to avoid staining (even from water!!!), it was so unfortunate especially at parties!
@8:44 - the soundproofing layer and wall-to-wall carpet for the second floor sounds like a good idea, but any messes the cats make will likely leave a strain. I'd suggest a solid floor with rugs.
The difficult thing about mudding drywall is just how tedious it can be, especially if you're trying to be 'perfect' or if there are a lot of imperfections in the drywall. It's not worth it to do your entire house yourself because of how long it would take you, especially since I'm assuming neither your or Jun have experience mudding. When it's just one room, mudding can be almost fun, but an entire house would be miserable
I thought all walls need to be plastered/ mudded? In the UK a house would be classed as unfinished or bodged if the wall had been wallpapered straight on the drywall. Is wallpapering over drywall a standard outside of Europe?

I can second this. We decided to mud and texture our entire house ourselves. I am glad we did it but, it's so much work,it takes a ton of muscle, and we learned by the last room of the house, less is more. The first room it took a whole day to sand down the texture because we used too much.
I know for our house my mom made sure she researched the tile she got. Apparently some tiles have chemicals that will seep up into your feet, and your animals feet. We have cats, and my mom didn't want the cats to be licking their paws when there would be chemicals on them. I dont know exactly the term she used, but she said she got good tile for our house 😂🤷♀️
If you guys aren't sold on wallpaper yet and are still unsure if you want to do mudding and paint, mudding is really easy! You just have to go slow and check your spots as you do them. I find it very relaxing :] Good luck!
my sister is doing mudding herself- she just watered down the plaster a bit more than recommended and used a paint roller. Took a little longer to dry, but it made the painting part itself pretty easy
Even if they go with wallpaper, they should finish the drywall and prime. Without a smooth surface they'll see all of the joints and screws and if just a few dents in her flooring drive Rachel crazy, I really think she'll hate her walls if they decide to cut corners there.

Rachel telling the kitchen story is such a mood. I have totally told people stories in that manner, where the problems just keep adding up and it just feels like a train riding straight towards a cliff with no brakes and at the end I'm just like "*exhausted sigh*... they're figuring it out."
There will still need to be taping/mudding of the drywall/gypsum, otherwise you're going to have all of the joints and fasteners (nails) telegraphing through to the wallpaper. Definitely one of the things you should have a professional do. They'll get it done so much better and faster. My dad built houses and drywall was always something he subbed out.

I think you will find you’ll still need to do the muddying, even with wallpaper as you’ll see all the lines (where the chip rock meets) and bumps where there are screws. Muddying will make it all smooth.

1:00 i really like it when companies use the hidden side to put a full sized printed sticker that has a top down view of the finite lay for that particular sample. Not many do it (mostly high end, so far), but it's a nice thing to see, kinda hoping the trend catches on with other companies too.
Some showrooms had images like that available, but in a lot of situations I just had to google the product and hope someone had posted an image somewhere. If we couldn't find any overall image at all we stayed away...
Architect here, I have to say you guys are taking this to a level that most clients do not and in a very good way. I especially like that you are digging into the pros and cons of every finish material. I still would enjoy hearing more about Jun's kitchen troubles, discoveries, and ultimate success - as I am of similar height and love to cook too. What is interesting is that a house design is analogous to an animal, with a skeleton, circulation, nervous, reparation, etc. Most of your building/body is now set and you are essentially picking out the skin and make-up. So glad you are going with a hardwood full-depth top layer laminate. (More of Jun's kitchen please)

About the mudding of the drywall, my father did that in our basement recently and I can confirm that it is no easy task. Wallpaper is a good choice.
I've never thought of the cold tile feeling as a downside of tile floors - I love it! But maybe it's nicer in a hot climate than in Japan

I am struggling to locate it first off because desktop/phone wallpapers dominate the search terms and secondly I just keep finding at on of those glow in the dark star wall stickers and stuff instead of the actual type they showed here.

I feel like in a lot of English speaking countries wallpapers are associated with really big floral or just funky patterns, but there's so many just neutral options! Luckily I'm German and we always had a very big variety of wallpapers here so my family could always just wallpaper the places we live in really easily (we've gotten to a point were we not only own two foldable wallpaper tables, but a wallpaper glue machine that you clamp to the table and feed the wallpaper through and it's perfectly coated, no need to brush glue on every sheet of wallpaper anymore).
Too late now, but maybe for the future, there's a type of floor which is made by lifting a print off natural stone. Some of the stone comes with the epoxy (or fiberglass) base and thus gives a natural stone finish. It's still new, but it has a very natural feel, certainly for side panels, it would more than resist time. I expect the technology behind it to improve. One cool thing about it is the fact that you can curve it.

We made over our family dining room and living room and we had someone wallpaper it in white and then painted it ☺️ worked pretty well

As someone whose husband had to learn how to to mudding (because Pandemic and no one was available) and I tried to learn how to do it, it was a wise decision to go with wallpaper if the walls were unfinished. We did our best and it still doesn't look good, but we have walls now haha!
