- Trumpet Voluntary (from Ten Voluntaries, Op. 6, No. 5 in D minor) by John Stanley, arranged by David Willcocks performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church on Tuesday 2nd July 2024.
John Stanley was a blind organist who studied with Maurice Greene, the organist at St Paul's Cathedral. A prodigious talent, he was the youngest person ever to obtain a Bachelor degree in Music (B. Mus) from the University of Oxford. Later he was organist to the Society of the Inner Temple in London, where George Frederic Handel regularly would go to hear him perform.
Stanley wrote three sets of ten voluntaries for the organ, all of which are multi-movement works of high-quality craft and infectious tunefulness.
The trumpet tune from the fifth voluntary of the second set has enjoyed a firm place in the repertoire, and is a popular favourite for wedding processionals.

Fabulous beaut beautifully executed, thank you very much, Ben
Bravo! Beautifully played with an understanding light but precise touch that imparted the joy of this piece. Very cheering Ben.
This is one of your finest examples to showcast your great talent. Ben congratulations.
Great arrangement! Thanks for uploading, Ben.
Lovely playing Ben: looking forward to your CD in Oct. I would not mind some lessons from you at some point. I’ve not had any in 20 odd years.
You can't beat a bit of John Stanley, especially in a David Willcocks arrangement. A sparkling performance, Ben, on this glorious instrument: bravo! (I have long moved past being irritated to now being amused by how certain organists/musicians are obsessed with 'grading' music from the excellent and erudite to the mediocre and unscholarly. All that really matters, in the end, is the pleasure any individual gets from a composition . . . and John Stanley still delivers plenty of pleasure to both the seeing and musically blind.)
Poor old Stanley. He deserves more respect.
