The Fall of Khartoum | VPRO Documentary

Despite clear signals, the Dutch embassy in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum was not prepared for the war that broke out there in mid-April 2023. This left dozens of Sudanese in life-threatening situations.
Journalist Bram Vermeulen travels to Cairo, London and Bristol to speak with family members of people who were forced to stay behind in the violence of war. He also interviews Ambassador Irma van Dueren about the embassy's chaotic evacuation. 'My colleagues just did a good job,' Van Dueren says.

I lived 3 minutes away from the Dutch Embassy in Khartoum 2. Some of my colleagues from the UN were sheltered there. That morning of 15 April and the days that followed until evacuation have been the most devastating and painful I have ever experienced, and sadly almost 8 months into the conflict, it hasn’t ended. I am so heartbroken Sudan is not even on the headlines anymore, a forgotten conflict, in which mass atrocities continue to take place. I miss you Khartoum, despite all, you were such an amazing place to live and experience. ❤️ And the Sudanese people will always have a big place in my heart.
