A friend of mine who represented some on death row because they did not have a fair trial told me there have been some who were poorly represented and found not guilty. He also told me about those who try to get convictions for political power. Keeping someone in prison for life is cheaper than a death row case because of all the appeals. Some may remember all the people who were released from prison due to DNA testing but had been placed on death row.

And that because he used the word die, I thought that would be an eternal death as well. I would have never thought that Jesus was affirming death for death. Quite the opposite.

God is the author of life. He gives life, *only He* is entitled to take it away. No-one else. All people are created in the image of God. When one person is killed, the one who did it, and the one who made the decision, are guilty of killing the image of God, regardless of the reasons. When God decides to take someone's life, He will do it either directly (eg illness, accident) or through evil people. A Christian must never resort to violence, and show mercy at all times and towards everyone, even if their own lives are in danger (remember Jesus, Stephen, and all of the martyrs of the early Church). Christians must walk in the footsteps of their Lord, Jesus Christ (see the woman caught in the act of adultery).

The death penalty in the west is largely an American concept. Both Canada and the UK have done away with it. It is an old and outdated process that is still in place by people who have exhausted the notion that there are other forms of justice that don’t involve utterly destroying a human and what they could potentially become. Personally, I think it’s absolutely barbaric.
While I agree with most of what John MacArthur has to say; on this subject I have to disagree. He talks about God’s mercy - well if God can be merciful so should we. We are told in the 10 commandments that we must not commit murder, but executing someone is essentially state sponsored murder and I believe the perpetrators will face the eternal consequences in Hell. Here in Europe we realised this truth many years ago and no country can become a member of the EU while it still has capital punishment on its statute book. Ultimately we will have to face God on Judgement Day and it is at that point that our sins will be finally judged.

If he affirms the death penalty does he affirm that the death penalty (according to the Old Testament, which he referenced in his answer) applied to adulterers and children who disrespected their parents, et al?
