“”The question “are Catholics saved?” cannot be answered with a universal “yes” or “no.” In the same way, neither can the questions “are Baptists saved?” or “are Presbyterians saved?” or “are Methodists saved?” be answered in a universal sense. One is not saved by being Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian, or Methodist. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone (John 14:6; Ephesians 2:8-9). There is likely no denomination or division of the Christian faith in which every member truly has personally trusted in Christ as Savior.
Further, there are well over one billion Roman Catholics in the world. Among those adherents, there is a significant amount of latitude in beliefs and practices. Roman Catholics in the United States do not have identical beliefs and practices as Roman Catholics in Italy. Catholics in Latin America are not the mirror images of Catholics in Africa. While the Roman Catholic hierarchy advances the notion that all Roman Catholics hold to the same beliefs and observe the same practices, this is definitely not the case. The diversity within Catholicism is another reason why the question “are Catholics saved?” cannot be answered absolutely.
If we change the question to be more specific, however, we can have a definite answer: “are Catholics who adhere to official Roman Catholic beliefs and practices saved?” The answer to this question is “no.” Why? Because the official teaching of Roman Catholicism is that salvation is not by faith alone, through grace alone, in Christ alone. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that one must have good works and observe the rituals of Roman Catholicism in order to be saved.
Summarizing the Catholic understanding of salvation is difficult because it is extensive. Here is a summary of the official Roman Catholic teaching on salvation: to be saved, a person must receive Christ as Savior by faith, be baptized in the Trinitarian formula, be infused with additional grace by observing the Catholic sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and then die without any unconfessed mortal sins. If one accomplishes the above, he or she will be saved and granted entrance into heaven, likely after an extensive time of further cleansing in purgatory.
The Roman Catholic process is significantly different from the apostle Paul’s teaching on how salvation is received: “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). John 3:16 ascribes salvation to everyone who believes in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 explicitly teaches that salvation is not by works, with verse 10 then clarifying that works are the result of salvation. Simply put, the Catholic teaching on salvation is very different from what the Bible teaches.
So, no, if a person holds to the official Roman Catholic understanding of salvation, he or she is not saved. Despite their vigorous affirmations, Roman Catholicism does not truly hold to salvation by grace through faith.
With that said, it is important to remember that not all Catholics hold to the Roman Catholic understanding of salvation. There are Catholics who truly and fully believe that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone. There are Catholics who observe the sacraments as an aspect of spiritual growth and intimacy with God, not in an attempt to earn salvation. There are many Catholics who believe in the biblical doctrine of salvation and do not understand that the official teaching of the Roman Catholic Church is something very different.
Are Catholics saved? Do Catholics go to heaven? It depends. If the question is “are there saved Catholics?” then the answer is “yes.” If the question is “will a person go to heaven if he or she holds to the official Roman Catholic doctrine of salvation?” the answer is “no.””

This one has always been a struggle for me because there were other capital punishment laws in place in the Old T, for example, adultery was also the death penalty. Why would we carry some laws forward and not others?
I do believe that even in the New Covenant age under Christ, we should look at sin with a lot more accountability, but now that we have been taught of the Spirit and we understand that "if not for the grace of God, there go I", the circumstances in any sin must be heavily weighed out. For example, a battered woman kills her batterer. Is she guilty-yes, but does her circumstance also warrant death? Perhaps, but each case would have to be considered.
There are Christians who support the death penalty, but think adultery is a slap on the wrist. Yet, ask most people who have experienced it and a divorce following and they would tell you its worse than death. Now the divorce rate in our churches is very high, we can't hardly tell the difference between it and the world and that should not be.
I feel there is a middle ground where we get back to tough laws on all sins like stealing, adultery, and so forth, but always have in mind when passing such judgments our own sin, our own ability to fall into such sins, and judge each case righteously in love and not by the letter of the law. Consider the circumstances, the repentance, all things and not be swift to act fast, but also not be too soft and end up right where we are now.
Just thinking out loud here, I waffle back and forth on this one...

Appreciate your candid honesty and struggle wit this issue. One thought that came to my mind when you talked about us passing judgment, was that in such cases as murder, we are not "passing judgment" on the murderer, that judgment was already pronounced (Gen. 9:5-6) by God. I mean in that sense we are not deciding what is sin/evil but God is the Judge and spoken to it already. I know that does not begin to address the other issues you bring up and I don't pretend to have all the answers. Those other sins are serious and maybe we have become too accustomed and comfortable with sin that we struggle to appreciate the seriousness of it as God does (just looking at Jesus on the cross should remind us of that). In any event, what all of us need to receive is God's mercy, since we all are under the same condemnation as any murder, adulterer, etc. since in the eyes of a holy and perfectly righteous God we all are guilty from the start. But mercy, like grace, is not something earned or owed in the least (otherwise it would not be mercy or grace). I think that is both terrifying and comforting -- comforting at least to those of us who have received it (as in 'Him' -- John 1:12). Like you I still am working this all through though I believe it seems pretty clear on the capital punishment issue ought to be on a governmental / societal level...

@@w.m.woodward2833 It can be hard at times, consider even the Apostle Paul had Christians killed, yet when he got saved, all was forgiven and no one sought the death penalty.
As to your point that God has already made the judgment, that can be applied to the other sins I mentioned as well, since the punishment for these sins are clearly laid out in the Old T.
Agree on the civil authorities, but its obvious that without a Christian background to law, that gets really messed up as well.
We see darkly on this side of heaven. I do believe regardless of position, our first instinct should be love, mercy, grace, as much as reasonable, but we must have law in a sinful world.

You made many good points in your post. One is not considered in due of penalty in the OT and that is self/defense. As Christians we need to fetter this out so that we do not sin either by act nor by lack of action. I would love to hear how Dr Sproul would apply his teaching here to all murder scenarios. Especially capital punishment of innocent babes.

    • @w.m.woodward2833

L.A. but self-defense is not in the same category as murder. Ga'ul (I don't remember how I actually write it in English) for 'kill' in the ten commandments for example has several different uses, affected by context, as to whether referring to murder or killing otherwise (i.e. not with murderous intent). Even in the Law there is provision made killing in self defense. None of it of course is good but God in His wisdom made provisions for the inevitable in a fallen world, and for that we can be humbly grateful. 🤔

Definitely food for thought there. I’m thinking the ultimate responsibility lay on the person who chose to kill the child (mother and/or father). They’re ultimately culpable. Now as for the person(s) hired to do the killing, I’m not sure to what level they should be held accountable. Likely, same as mother/father.
Now for the bigger question, parents find out that either mom or child will die if pregnancy is allowed to go full term. What, ask God then cast lots (flip a coin)? Tough situation, very tough!

For man to avenge the death with another or more deaths? Or to punish but forgive? In the USA we are not handling all murder equally and especially not the murder of the innocent in abortions.

What about if you get the wrong person? Here, In England there have been a number of cases where innocent people have been convicted of murder and would have been hanged, if the death penalty were still in place. Examples of this being the Birmingham six and the Guildford four - (do your research). In both of these cases, it took years before the truth finally came out, and they were proved innocent.

The law given to Noah is based on an objective fact, that if in fact someone does shed the blood of man, his blood is to be shed by man. It doesn’t here say anything about how we figure that out. But in the Law of Moses, God states plainly that no one is ever to be put to death on account of only one witness; two or three are required. So God likewise would rather a murderer get away than that the innocent be condemned. Yet He still prescribed it, and the same objections could’ve been raised back then. The multiple witnesses safeguards against that. Likewise, if the judges judged wrongly, they were said to have blood guilt on them. Additionally, false accusations were deferred by God’s Law, which said that if one was caught bearing false witness, it shall be done to him as he intended to do to his brother. I.e. lying about a capital crime (essentially attempted murder through the legal system) would put one’s own life in jeopardy as well. But if we want to make this argument, we should apply it consistently. No innocent party should *ever* have to suffer for what they did not do. We should be as certain in our judgments in minor matters as in major matters, because injustice is injustice. So should we thereby abolish all laws and punishments whatsoever to avoid the possibility of an innocent party taking the punishment for a crime they did not commit?

@@reuben8328 Thank you for your well reasoned answer. However, even with safeguards in place people have still been wrongly convicted of murder. For example, I read a book about Michael Morton, a US citizen who spent many years in prison for murdering his wife before being pronounced innocent. It is a tragedy that he lost so many years of his life, but it would have been an even worse tragedy if he had been executed.

Punishment is actually not a very effective teacher! It may teach people not to do something, but at a great cost to their spiritual progress and ability to Love themselves, to Love life and to Love others; which is the ultimate lesson.
Those who receive punishment are full of shame, anger and resentment; and this is a hell they must learn to release themselves from.
Because punishment leads to further sinful entrenchment and misery, it's ultimately counterproductive to spiritual progress.
Punishment is man's way to remedy crimes and mistakes! And humankind has yet to recognize its ineffectiveness.
Punishment perpetuates pain and negativity, and does nothing to heal it.
All crimes, mistakes and suffering are caused by our "sinful nature."
So the solution is not to entrench people further into their sin by punishing them, but to give them what might help them see that they are not sinners.
Love is what heals and brings people out of their "sinful nature," and nothing else.
Love, acceptance, kindness, compassion and attention; these are the balms that heal.

If this stance were followed by civil govt so as to align with biblical teaching then all takers of human life would need to be avenged by man unto death, even upon all those involved with abortions. But, as we know, Moses, David and others were not put to death and, as some point out they suffered other consequences of sinful actions, but God chose them to live (His right). How then do believing men, to whom this literal life for a life instruction applies, carry this out unless we know with His authority which persons ✨Holy Heavenly Father✨ commands to be either killed or spared? If we instead forgive and turn the other cheek, must that not also be applied evenly? And what if we believers, if we err on either side, sin in doing so? Does genuine repentance cover us?

God is the One who instituted capital punishment: “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man” (Genesis 9:6). Jesus would support capital punishment in some instances. Jesus also demonstrated grace when capital punishment was due (John 8:1-11). The apostle Paul definitely recognized the power of the government to institute capital punishment where appropriate (Romans 13:1-7).
God has given government the authority to determine when capital punishment is due (Genesis 9:6; Romans 13:1-7). It is unbiblical to claim that God opposes the death penalty in all instances.

The passage in John 8 reguarding the woman taken in adultery is not about grace, nor is jesus making an exception to the law. There were to be no exceptions. Jesus cannot invoke the capital punishment due because had he done so he would have been in violation of the command/law given in Deu. 22:22 which requires that both the man and the woman be brought forward and publicly executed. The irony of the passage and the reason that the religious leaders slink away in shame and cannot cast a stone, is that they by not bringing the man as well had broken the very commandment that they were using to condem the woman. Mistrial.

About one in five people on death row have been found innocent. Many who are guilty have been overcharged, in that they have been found guilty of a crime that calls for capital punishment, but because of poor defense, they are found guilty of a more severe crime. Your reasoning seems very “Old Testament.” The New Testament calls for a higher degree of mercy and love than an “eye for an eye.” It is hard to imagine Jesus agreeing with this opinion. For those non-Christians and those deciding if you should become a Christian (I hope you do) reading this, the opinion illustrated in this video is not the opinion of many, if not most, Christians. There are “tons” of Biblical and common sense arguments against capital punishment. There is not a limit to God’s mercy. We should protect society (e.g., life in prison) not see retribution or a life-for-life.

But there are crimes, murders that are so hideous that the doer forfeits all human rights. He/she does not deserve to live. Yes, they should be put to death. And I am sure you can come up with examples of such crimes yourself.

Thank you for a voice of reason in the midst of vengeful comments that I see here. In England, where I live, we have had many cases of people jailed for murder who turned out to be innocent. Do your research on the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four. If hanging was in place they would have been executed. Thankfully, this barbarity was abolished in the 1960s, and not before time. Albert Pierrepoint was a hangman who executed hundreds of people but later admitted that it was no deterrent and he turned against the death penalty.

All life is sacred in the eyes of God and deserve the right to repent.
If you support capital punishment, you're supporting satans power in this world, and turn away from God.
Jesus is Lord, God and Saviour.

*THE DEATH PENALTY was part of THE OLD COVENANT (that ENDED over 2000 years ago)*
*JESUS came to ESTABLISH the NEW COVENANT which REMOVED THOSE PUNISHMENTS*
    *Read more for the scriptures:*
    Romans 12:14, 17, 19
[14] Bless those who persecute you; bless and *do not curse.*
[17] *Do not repay anyone evil for evil.* Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
[19] *Do not take revenge,* my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
    1 Peter 3:9
*Do not repay evil with evil* or insult with insult. On the contrary, *repay evil with blessing,* because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
    Luke 6:31
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
    Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the *merciful,* for they will be shown *mercy.*
    Romans 13:10
*Love does no harm* to a neighbor. Therefore *love* is the fulfillment of the law.
    1 Peter 2:21, 23
[21] To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
[23] When they hurled their insults at him, *he did not retaliate;* when he suffered, *he made no threats.* Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.
*Jesus declaring the NEW TESTAMENT law:* Matthew 5:38-39, 43-46
[38] “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
[39] But I tell you, *do not resist an evil person.* If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
*THIS WAS OLD TESTAMENT:* Exodus 21:12
[12] “Anyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death.
[24] eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

Jesus asked the Father to forgive His murderers. Mr rc sproul, obviously a sinner, would say otherwise.
