Crazy how the MCU isn't that old in reality but the amount of nostalgia from these early movies i get is crazy with little hints to an expanding universe. Seeing the introduction of both Cap's shield and Thor's hammer was massive at the time but now there are films with 20 comic characters sharing the screen they seem quite small now

    • @SofaandChill

I love watching you react to these movies with your son. My youngest son and I were in the theater opening night for Iron Man and we were in the theater together for Endgame 11 years later. He was your boys age when we started and now has his own son. These movies are perceived by some as just action, super hero in tights movies and nothing more. But by the time Endgame happened the MCU had brought together whole cultures and brought families together under one tent. The reason Endgame is the biggest movie in cinema history isn't only because of fun action but mostly the heart and soul and realism of the human condition. Just as Stan Lee wanted from the beginning all those long years ago.

Nat said this shouldn't be possible to just take Tony suit and use it. To quote from the movie scene (the one where they where in a donut shop with Nick Fury):
    Nick: Is that even possible?
Nat: Well, according to Mr. Stark's database security guidelines, there are redundancies to prevent unauthorized usage.
The simple answer is that at some point in the past, Tony had given Rhodey clearance to use the Mk.II armour. The "unauthorised usage" protocol would therefore not have prevented him from using it, even if that specific usage was unauthorised. Recall Tony learning how to use the suit in Iron Man? There's none of that here...this all lends weight to Rhodey having used the suit before and, thus, being authorized to use it.
As for why Tony would have given Rhodey that clearance, recall that for most of Iron Man 2, he is secretly dying of palladium poisoning and worrying about who will continue his legacy. He gives Pepper control of Stark Industries, and it seems his intention was for Rhodey to be his successor as Iron Man. Rhodey is his oldest and closest friends and a skilled military pilot, would have been the ideal candidate for the job.

Terrence Howard was replaced because he wanted more money. He was paid more than RDJ in the first movie but RDJ was getting more for this one and that caused issues.

Robert Downey Jr. was actually a huge gamble for Marvel (which at that point had not yet been baught by Disney and was banking a lot on the first Iron Man to succeed).
He was basically himself a recovering drug addict who had his fair share of Hollywood scandals and didn't land any big roles in years.
But Kevin Feige clearly had a good eye and matched the complex and very flawed character of the genius Tony Stark with an actor that was just as flawed but brilliant himself!
And it worked out perfectly, creating one of the most memorable superheroes on screen while turning Robert Downey Jr. into a household name and one of the MCU's biggest celebrities.

What do we do with technology? We upgrade it. Computers, gaming consoles, cars, everything. So does Tony with his suits. He made mark 1 in a cave and followed up with a better design. Now he has a portable one in a case and where might he go in the future? I wont spoil it but it is just pure eyecandy how his suits evolve. You probably know that all the mcu movies lead up to infinity war & endgame. I just say this: in cinema when tony suit up for the first time with his final suit design, the whole crowd cheered and fliped out. It is amazing how they made his suit in every movie better and better.

I don't think anyone else mentioned this, but part of the reason why Elon Musk makes a cameo is because he allowed the studio to use his SpaceX facility to film part of it in. Did Ivan do anything wrong? Well, let's see, he murdered some race car drivers, or at least tried to, he put the crowd in danger of losing their lives, if he didn't injure anyone, he attempted to murder Tony Start on live television and then also at least endangered Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan by slicing apart the car Happy was driving.
By the end of the film, Ivan had done his best to engage in a mass murder of several thousand, or at least many hundreds, of random people at the Stark Expo.
There's also that jail guard whose neck he personally snapped, and the substitute prisoner who was blown up in Ivan's prison escape.

Terence Howard left because when the original deal for the Iron Man movies was put together, years before the first was made, Howard was a bigger star than Downey, who had been in jail and uninsurable in then-recent-years before he became sober again, and was paid more money than Downey was for IRON MAN 1.
Howard understandably thought that he should continue to get a huge multi-million-dollar salary for IRON MAN 2 and 3 (and possible other films). Marvel felt that whether Howard came back or replaced was really going to make zero difference to the success of IRON MAN 2 & 3 -- and obviously were correct -- so Marvel offered Howard reportedly no more than $1 million. Howard refused to work for what was offered, and thus was fired/quit, depending on which way you look at it.
God knows that in the long run, Cheadle has made a fortune being put in Marvel film after Marvel film and that's still going on and will be for the forseeable future.

    • @NoHandleGrr

@@SofaandChill: Don Cheadle seems happy enough. At least, he keeps coming back for more.
News reports say he's been paid "$6 or $7 million" per film, which seems like a lot until one considers that Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson reported got over $50 million each for ENDGAME. But, then, his Iron Man was the heart of the past four Marvel "Phases," and Cheadle is a good actor doing a good job, but isn''t essential to any of the films being hits.
But all these people live on a different planet than we do when we're talking about getting $50 million dollars per film or "only" $7 million.
Cheadle is next coming up in the forthcoming Disney + series "Armor Wars," obviously playing Rhodey again, presumably trying to chase down bad guys who have stolen some of Tony's designs. They're film it later this year so we won't be seeing it for another year or two. Endless MCU material keeps coming!
But all the Disney Plus series have been fantastic so far, and the used-to-be-Netflix series were mostly great (particularly JESSICA JONES, DAREDEVIL, LUKE CAGE, and THE DEFENDERS, in my opinion), as was the seven seasons of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. (only the first season is slow to get going).
I'm enjoying your videos; keep going! Just please stick to the order-as-released and don't let anyone talk you into "internal chronological order," please please please.

Come to think of it, I don't know if you have access to Disney Plus or not, but if you do, to be really completist, watch there in the queue that includes the Marvel Shorts, which are all hilarious and more or less canon. Some actually become important past developments years later.

Hey, Kev and Lewis! The second Iron Man entry is a total blast that ups the ante of the first film by having Tony ride high on the celebrity of his public declaration as well as suffer privately from deadly blood poisoning caused by his arc reactor, create a new element as well as a new suit, contend with a vengeful technical genius as well as a corporate antagonist and engage in a colossal three-way armored battle for the climax! The Hammer-Vanko storyline is clearly a tribute to one of Iron Man's signature arcs -- "Armor Wars" -- wherein Tony has to shut down every operation that's appropriated stolen StarkTech including SHIELD! This is also the only film to touch on Tony's alcoholism which should have been the subject of a whole movie as it is CENTRAL to the character. The legendary "Demon in a Bottle" arc has Tony hit rock bottom and turn over his Iron Man duties to James Rhodes which would have been some great material for both Robert Downey, Jr. and Don Cheadle as the new 'Rhodey' replacing Terrence Howard.
The film boasts an incredible cast with RDJ portraying Tony Stark in full manic mode as a man keenly aware of his imminent mortality yet in simultaneous aggressive denial. He is supported by a nakedly envious Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, a menacingly bemused Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash, a lusciously lethal Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow and an earnest, exasperated Don Cheadle as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes aka War Machine. Garry Shandling even shows up in a small role he reprises elsewhere in the MCU as Senator Stern. The "His Girl Friday"-like romantic banter between Tony and Gwyneth Paltrow's Virginia 'Pepper' Potts remains a comic highlight with Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson serving as a great straight man. I also really like John Slattery's contribution as elder Howard Stark who looms so large in Tony's life. Slattery's portrayal in Stark's promotional recordings is a hybrid of a young Howard Hughes and a middle-aged Walt Disney. Of course, director Jon Favreau as Harold 'Happy' Hogan and Paul Bettany as JARVIS return. Perpetually p***ed-off Sam Jackson as Col. Nick Fury swings by to drop some dark Stark legacy in Tony's lap as well as drop a hint of Asgardian doings in the Southwest. Leslie Bibb returns as journalist Christine Everhart as does Tim Guinee as USAF Major Allen. Kate Mara has a bit part as a process server and Elon Musk appears as himself!
    TRIVIA:
    1. Natasha's belt buckle carries her sigil which is the red angular hourglass shape that is found on the actual backs of black widow spiders.
    2. The events of "Iron Man 2", "The Incredible Hulk" and "Thor" all occur during one week in MCU-time called Fury's Big Week!
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. The half-finished, star-spangled convex object Tony uses to balance his makeshift particle accelerator is a prototype of Captain America's shield!
    2. While Tony reads his psych evaluation by Natasha, one of the holo-screens shows a field reporter covering the aftermath of Hulk's Culver University rampage indicating that Hulk's adventure is still in progress while Tony has just completed his which places "Iron Man 2" earlier in the chronology than "Incredible Hulk".
    3. Tony's status as a SHIELD consultant sets up the One-Shot "The Consultant" which accompanies "Incredible Hulk" recontextualizing its barroom end-credit scene with Ross.
    4. The kid in the Iron Man helmet Tony saves from the drone at the Expo is a pre-Spider-Man Peter Parker!
    CAMEO:
    1. Stan Lee shows up as Larry King complete with suspenders as Tony descends the escalator from the opening Stark Expo!
    END-CREDIT SCENE:
    1. The end-credit scene is actually an excerpt from "Thor" which shows Coulson arriving in New Mexico at the crater made by the impact of Thor's fallen hammer, Mjolnir.
The next chronological stop in the MCU is a featurette called a One-Shot that occurs at the end of "Iron Man 2" prior to the end-credit scene which is actually a clip from "Thor". "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" serves as a little prelude to "Thor" as Coulson travels to New Mexico and stumbles onto some unexpected action. It is found on the "Captain America: The First Avenger" blu-ray and DPlus.

This is a nice film, and the only one I have seen out of the Iron Man films. Apparently Hulk was a big flop. Also, how are you watching this? On Disney+? If so, you should watch the Marvel One-shot that coincides with each film, they were originally extra content you would get with CDs, so yeah

Yeah the Hulk was a flop but I didn't mind it :)

Hulk might have been a commercial flop, but that's irrelevent to the larger MCU narrative. It's also unfair to compare one Marvel movie to another, lol! This is storytelling that makes Star Wars look like a Sunday comic strip.

@@SofaandChill Ok, there is one related to Iron Man 2 and Hulk called 'The Consultant', and it released 2011, so around the time of Thor, we can assume it happened before Thor. There is another one made for thor in 2011, I won't give the name away but it has 'thor' in the name, I suggest you watch it straight after for context, since it technically happens during the movie but goes unseen

As always I liked your reaction but I won’t lie to you, on my personal ranking of the MCU this is towards the bottom or the bottom entry. It’s not horrible but I think it’s not too memorable there’s just so many better films in the series. That said it is entertaining and has parts I like (Natasha’s hallway scene, the suitcase armor and the post credit tease for Thor).

Terrence Howard was fired because he wanted to hold Marvel to his contract. Marvel wanted to pay him less than his contract.
