I was a single mom till my oldest was 10 yrs old. I took pictures of their clothes, that I had big memories of, and donated them to a shelter for moms and their children getting out of abusive homes. It made me feel so good...❤

I don't know if you've seen her, but there's a lady here on UA-cam that teaches declutering and she's got several books about it, but her name is Dana k.White and she came up with a method of getting her house under control while having an overwhelming amount of stuff and four kids. And even though I don't have kids a lot of her methods have helped me deal with my home when it gets overwhelming.

Use it or lose it ! It’s the only way if you truly want to declutter. The memories are not in the clothing, they are in your head. You won’t lose them. If you don’t let go of the past how do you make room for the future ?

Making room for new memories and for you and your child to grow in a clutter free home will be so great! Children do thrive with less. I hope that you're able to be able to look forward to new memories and let go of the old ones. Sending nothing but love and prayers. ❤

Libby, you are not alone! Especially with the kid’s clothes. I didn’t get rid of my son’s clothes until he was 16. I didn’t get rid of his stroller and high chair until he was 16. 16!!!! I moved all of that stuff through 4 houses! We wanted more kids but couldn’t have any more. What helped me get rid of stuff was giving things to friends and family that were expecting. Knowing his stuff was going to people I cared about really helped me. I kept a few key things like the outfit he wore when we brought him home, his baptism clothes, a favorite shirt….My son is 19 now and I realize I was holding on to the memory of his childhood, but seeing him grow into a young man is exciting too. Hugs to you! You are doing so awesome and take it one day at a time! 💗

Oh my word I'm so proud of you !!!
You did such an exceptional job at that hallway.
You will develop your own decluttering strategy by trial and error. You are already honing in on that strategy.
    My advice is:
    1. Do whatever is irritating you the most. An area you use all the time. Your hallway was the perfect choice like you said you woke up to all those unmade decisions, waiting to be made, greeting you multiple times every day. Great choice. Looking forward to what spot you choose next 👍 keep it achievable. One shelf, one corner at a time.
    2. Don't throw/give away any containers, baskets, boxes (unless broken) that you empty while you declutter. Stack them up. You may find them useful for other things you CHOOSE to keep. (Like the nail products). Plus you are looking to move and need to pack eventually.
    3. The marie kondo method. I use as my last resort when going through my things. Its a process of elimination. Use the easy questions first. Are you broken? Do you work? Are you expired? Do i like you ? Am I still using it? Can I store it away appropriately? Is it easy to clean ?
If i still havent decided after all those questions i will geniuinely take a moment and ask myself ... Do you bring me joy ? Yes ok 👌 No - thank you and move on now. That is the only part of the kondo method i use and i use it as my final card. Although the ... Are you easy to clean ... And... Can i store you away properly... Usually seal the deal 🤝
With regards to your son's clothes. You did an excellent job on that box ❤ keep what you love most and donate the rest xxx let the emotions flow and thank them. But keep what you love the MOST. Items that bring good memories back to you.
    4. Toothpaste, toilet paper, soaps, shampoos all the bathing showering toiletries should go in the cupboard with your towels. You will be able to see what you have and USE what you have. I love having a toiletry pantry.
Then everything you use outside of the bathroom, like moisturizer , deodorant, facial products, make-up should be contained in your room where you get dry and dressed.
I hope this is not bombarding you, I guess what I am trying to say is now that you have decluttered your beauty products SO WELL, the next step is to organise them. I find it easy to decide how to organise by asking... Where do I use you? Or where else do I already store products of a similar purpose? Or where do I always go to look for you and why are you not being stored there ?
    5. Take out the trash from the project you are tackling, just like you did in this video. Don't let the trash and charity bags pile up for days that turn into weeks. And eventually just return back into your house for you to have to remake all those decisions you've already made.
    6. Make running to the charity drop off point a habit. Just get used to driving there . This is often the most difficult part. Actually getting rid of it. Make that charity trip a habit.
Simply Libby ONE DAY at a time. As you can see, all my points of advice are things you are already doing. Keep pulling different techniques at different times through the project and you will develop your own style of decluttering and looking after and loving all the things you have deliberately chosen to keep in your home and your life. You are doing brilliantly. I am so inspired by you and your journey. Decluttering is therapy and the weightlessness it brings is addictive. Don't rush it and do make the most of it to get the most out of it xxx so excited to see another video from you. Well done you should be super proud of yourself ❤ Emma

I am stopping the video 6 minutes in to add something you may soon address having a solution for, but when I felt I needed to let go of my kids' things (currently 16 and 19) when they were little, I found small roller suitcases helped a lot. I bought 2 cheap ones from 2nd hand stores and decided I could keep whatever I wanted as long as it fit in their suitcase. It so helped me find my absolute favorites because I couldn't keep everything. Their baby journals, the outfits they came home from the hospital in, favorite books I read to them, mementos from family, a favorite toy or two... That kind of thing. You are doing a great job! Much love and support. My weakness was their art. I have 3 ring binders filled with all the things they painted or colored. Just do what feels good to you and eases your Mama heart in this declutter process.

As another single mom I am sobbing right along with you when you talked about nobody else having the memories of all the stages of your child. I so recognize that, thank you for giving me the words for those feelings. Also totally with you about the depression/joy thing. A lot of declutter coaches want to say "when in doubt, throw it out" BUT for me, when in doubt, I keep it (for now). Because I can't trust my own feelings half the time. I definitely declutter in layers so maybe next time it will go. Or the time after that. I refuse to put more stress on myself by making decisions that can't be reversed. Once I started being gentle with myself about that, decluttering actually got easier for some reason. 💕

I get it with the baby and kid clothes but I have to say that I finally jumped in and got rid of most of them. I saved a few favorites. I brought most of them to a kid’s clothing resale shop. They give “credit” on new (used) clothes in my kid’s current sizes. I have also sold some on Marketplace and donated a bunch. It FEELS SOOO good to have the space! I know it’s SO easy to buy clothes really inexpensively at the resale shops, garage sales, or on Marketplace. I even got to test this out three years ago. My youngest two children, out of five, are adopted. When my youngest was 10 years old, we got a call that her newborn baby sister needed a foster home. We took her in and she was with us for three months. We had nothing left for a baby and my adult daughter put out the word that we needed baby stuff, and it absolutely poured in! Between that, and picking up some things at the resale shop, and on marketplace, I had no problem clothing that sweet baby girl. And it didn’t cost very much!! So, as far as saving clothes for another child, consider the space that you’re saving, essentially space that you’re having to pay rent on. You’ll be much better off in the long run to be able to have a smaller space and not store all the clothes and buy things in the future for a new baby. Your kitties are adorable!!

You don't have to donate the broom because it doesn't make you want to dance with joy - but she would like us to respect the items we do have and treat them well. I find when you have too much it's difficult to care properly for all you have - especially when it gets to a place where you have so much you don't know what you have. Personally, I think you ought to just hold on to the fabulous job you did in your hall and keep on telling yourself how wonderful and capable you are 😊

i don't do "bring joy". especially not for bathroom items. for me it's do I use it, do I like it (fits well, like the scent etc)? that takes care of most choices. clothes don't bring me joy. they are necessary. the things that bring me the least joy are the things I have to keep - dress clothes or work clothes. whereas I need to keep basic everyday stuff, so I go for how does it fit? have i grabbed it recently or never do. I also found that it helps to have a bin near by for donation throughout the year. then when I'm getting dressed and I see something and think "i hate that", in the bin it goes! no extra thought needed.
i heard someone say "if I get rid of it and regret it, can it be replaced in 5 minutes for $5?" so inexpensive easy to replace things can be gotten rid of more easily. Something your child wore or made, can't be replaced, so it needs more thought.
my kids have save boxes, i have saved a few clothing items from each stage. I eventually valued the space more than the need to keep the clothes, so I consigned them. but I have pictures of them in the clothes I like. and one baby dress does hang on my 11 year old's wall :).

I felt you when you were talking about letting go of your sons baby clothes. I went through the same feelings, hanging on to a lot of newborn clothes because my mother had knitted so much for her grandchild. Love in every stitch. At the age of 40 I was loathe to let them go but realised I would not now be having another child. I eventually donated the items to a friend who worked for a charity sending baby clothing to Belarus. I thought they were made with love, I let them go with love and hopefully the mother who receives them will feel that love too. It was a huge step. However I did it. I am now at another phase. It took me ages to let go of my daughters clothing when she died some years later aged 16. My husband died two years ago now and I am just starting the declutter and removing his clothing and items bit by tiny bit. My life is starting a new chapter, me and my dogs. We all experience so many changes in life, it takes courage to let go, but we must to help ourselves thrive in new environment. Clothing holds so much attachment and memories. Great job and video. Thank you for sharing.

Keep one baby outfit and donate the rest he has grown out of. Okay, when I was in the midst of a move from America to Australia, I had a year to go through all of my household goods, books and more. I ended up giving away ninety five percent of everything away to my daughters, a former sister in law and a dear friend. The books and a few things I was keeping were shipped overseas where my husband paid for the customs. The last three percent was donated, recycled or trashed with two percent coming with me in my luggage. It was not an easy task but I found it helped to lay everything from my various rooms on the living room floor to sort through. Being able to see it all was a huge help. And after eight years of living down here, my husband and I are prepping to move to a new apartment home. I am going through all our stuff and asking my husband's opinion on what he wants to keep from his things.

Aw, you don't have to explain that feeling of wanting to hold onto every precious memory/moment. I'm the same way 💙 I might not need to keep these clothes because I have my beautiful boy but, my heart runs on the lyrics to Don't Throw Out My Legos 😢 Would you consider, maybe, getting the items turned into a beautiful quilt? It could be yours until he's grown up and then you can gift it to him. That's what I'm thinking of doing 🥰

I also have depression and instead of thinking if sth brings me joy I usually ask myself if it makes me feel a little better. For example, I have candles in my room , and I light them when I want to make my room feel cozy. Of course those candles don’t bring me enough happiness to cure depression but they make life suck a little less so I keep them and use them

  • @karenpage9383
    @karenpage9383 2 місяці тому

Instead of asking if something brings you joy, consider more if it gives you negative feelings. There is no reason to keep things that remind you of times you hated, people you no longer like, or make you feel fat, ugly, uncomfortable, or guilty... even if its a thought like "this would be great if I were... neater/thinner/younger/smarter/whatever". I struggle with knowing how much I spent on something that I don't want to keep. But then I think of it as I'm paying rent to store that thing I don't even want and I would rather something else in the space it occupies. In my opinion, the only good thing about the Marie Kondo way is gathering like items together before deciding what to keep and what to purge. Its much easier to declutter is you see you have 3 of something that 1 would be sufficient. Big decluttering like this is hard, but it teaches you so much about acquiring things and helps you make better decisions about what comes into your home going forward.

Also! Re: baby and kid clothes, consider keeping one or two things you or he really loved from that size. I do this with clothes for my girls. The rest I sent to a local baby and mom cafe, so I knew all of it was going to good homes. That helps the process of letting go.
The Marie Kondo method really helped me grapple with my emotional connection to my stuff. In terms of toiletries and products, it's less of a 'spark joy' thing than a 'will this get used' thing. Doing KonMari forced me to confront whether or not I would use something. If the answer was no, it was simple to toss. If the answer was yes, I had new incentive to use it more often, which frequently did end up sparking joy. I hope this helps? I know you're going through such a tough time. Blessings and good vibes.

WELL DONE YOU ON DECLUTTERING YOUR SON'S CLOTHES!!! I'm seriously meaning that from the bottom of my heart, well done.
I'm not a single mam, so I can't fully understand your difficulty but there was a time in my life when I kept all my kids clothes (I have a now 9 year old boy and a 8 year old girl). But one day I just thought to myself if I keep it all nothing is really special. I worked through it, it took a long time, not because of how much there was but having to deal with the emotion to go along with it. I ended up keeping just the really special, their first outfit, first shoes, their christening outfits and the outfits that they wore when they were page boy and flower girl to my brother's wedding.

Yes I struggle with all of the above so I can tend to horde. I moved from a large house to a small flat and had to get rid of half of my stuff. Started by getting rid of duplicate items, items that you no longer use or ware donate. Keep items you love then when you are about to move relook at the items to see if there is anything else you can do without. It worked for me a cleared a huge amount but like you I have not tackled the toiletries this has given me the nudge to get on with it. Good luck with your new move xxx 📦📦

I don't think about the item giving me joy anymore. I get too emotional about stuff! I think about the space. If I get rid of this will I have space to line things up or will it be easier to find things. That gives me joy. Having a place for everything now gives me joy now. Feeling less anxiety about the clutter and mess, create space for joy. I felt your sons clothes tho, it's so hard!

My son And daughter are 15 and 12 and I’m just going through and getting rid of baby clothes. It is so emotional. I completely understand where you’re coming from. It’s hard to separate the memories from the actual items. My best advice is to go at a pace that’s comfortable for you. Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel or what time frame you need to follow. For me as I starting letting go some items it got easier. I’ve paired it down to my my favorite pieces and still have way too many bins! At least for my own goals. Good luck and stay strong ❤️

Baby clothes, any clothes to a women’s shelter. I ended up in one with my 2 youngest children. Leaving somewhere quickly means you may be short on clothing. Good cause. I also suffered in the process to empty nesting, then realized he didn’t go too far away, and now next generation is coming on. Having something bring me JOY is questionable, I’m more of a practical person nowadays. I still buy stuff, and feel a bit deflated after having it for a while. I look at a lot of things I have and break it down to "want" vs. "need". It is easier for me to donate items when I remember there is someone who needs things I am no longer using. (For example, I donated a huge amount of beloved clothes and shoes that didn't fit or I no longer needed since I retired and were impossible for me to wear - shoes- dues to physical issues.) It is hard but many of your belongings are "things" that are cluttering your life and stopping you from moving forward. Good luck!

I don’t do the ”bring joy”method. If i use it or know I will use it in the coming year I’ll keep it. I don’t have to love the item for it to be useful to me. I try to declutter small spaces continually, like one drawer a week or a shelf in my closet etc. For my closet I turn my hangers around when decluttering and then turn them the right way when I use the item. If I’ve not used it when the next declutter comes around I’ll declutter it. I usually do my closet 3-4 times a year. Everything stained, ripped or washed out is trashed (I’ve really struggled with thrasing clothes because I didn’t have a lot when I grew up)
