    About Spectre Sound Studios:
    I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
    We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
    Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
    I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

    Worth noting: EQ causes phase shift!
    Pass filters are the most notorious for it since each 6dB/oct increase of slope rotates the phase by 90° (e.g. 6dB/Oct is 90°, 12dB/Oct is 180°, etc). It's worth keeping in mind for multi-miked drums and for anything you do band limited processing on like a bass guitar.

      Dude, that's old school.
      Of course there may still be plenty of analog EQs out there,
      but none of the modern digital stuff causes phase shift.
      Multiple mics are a much bigger problem, unless you are TRYING to create a mechanical chorus effect
      to "thicken" the "tone".

      Kudos to Glenn for calling it what it is......a polarity reversal! Phase and polarity are quite different things.
      Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) - A change in amplitude yields a shift in phase. Most filters are this type. They are also called minimum phase as pointed out earlier.
      Finite Impulse Response (FIR) - Amplitude and phase can be adjusted independently of each other. These are more difficult to implement. They have latency at lower frequencies. They are being used more and more as processing speeds get faster. Meyer was recently awarded a patent for technology that they are using to obtain a flat phase response in a studio monitor. Pretty awesome stuff to us "propellerheads"!
      Whether using IIR or FIR, the bottom line is "does it sound good?" If the answer is "no", then keep moving mics, flipping switches, and fiddling with those knobs until it sounds good! :)

    • @davidfuller581

    There are some fun little psycho-acoustic tricks you can achieve in your mixes by placing some elements out of phase. I was reminded of such when I had to put a likewise effected track off our CD onto my drummer's sampler for our live set. Some voices that appear in the stereo mix and fly through 3D space disappeared when the entire track was summed to mono. I had to go back to the basic mix and sum all channels to mono and check that the phase settings were all congruent, then save a mono copy to the sampler. Love the tutorials Glenn!

    I would love to see a guitar mixing series, but not just the basics. I mean when you are quad tracking, and quad tracking harmonies or different guitars, ending up with a pile of layers. How to properly pan all those layers, keeping all the Guitar A to the L, and all guitar B to the R, or mix and match the layers, stuff like that. And how to deal with all those layers. I have some songs that have at least 10 layers of guitars because there are a few different layers to the song, and all the layers being quad tracked.... driving me insane! Haha

    One thing I've done before, bc I've worked on multi tracks where the snare mics are JUST off enough to where they're about halfway in between completely in and completely out of phase, is turn off the "magnetic snapping" on the DAW and slide one of the tracks until they're all in phase. Just make sure to check with multiple snare hits and don't try to get bit by bit precision (bc you won't) and you'll be golden.

    It's nice the way the 57's work in that clip. I got one. I like to do the Fredman with my blue encore100i's which obviously takes more work and stands, but they sound great. Because of the screens on them though, if you have it set up right, you'll always have to invert one because the capsules can't be as close as with the 57's. Long story short, you can use your favorite mics, or whatever you can afford, but that phase stuff needs to be kept in mind always.

    i think phase cancellation (intentional, as in phase flip button) can yield good results if you combine 2 radically different mics, like, say, one mic for that purpose, and another mic that, let's say, capture the sound you don't want from that certain parts (not only for guitars, it can work on kick drum too, basically you have a normal kick mic and another mic that capture its boxiness).

    Wouldn't phase inverting be useful for finding those nasty frequencies? I used the trick of boosting a mid-filter all the way up to find frequencies that doesn't sound well, and then cut them as much as needed.

Because when I mix in mono they just disappear into the mix. all the other things, drums, bass, vocals etc. I can reach a good mono compatibility, but on heavy distorted guitars I just lose.

    With the Friedman technique, I often will use an MD421 as my "bright" mic. Since its presence peak sits a bit lower in frequency than the 57, I find that it gives me a "more desirable brightness" (IMO) than a 57.

    I see how this works. Hypothetically, if a singer has two or more microphones that are out of phase, it will either clip the bottom, middle, top end or a combination of the three, making the singer sound too sharp, uneven or too flat etc, which of course typically affects instruments this way, that have a multiple microphone setup as well. I wonder if the arrangement and placement of instruments can typically affect one another and cause phases to drop periodically or constantly and just the microphones? Cool, thankyou.

    Hey, Glenn! Noob here. Talking about phase cancellation, is it possible to turn a *single* guitar track into quad tracks? Would that 1) just end up sounding like a regular centered track, therefore being pointless, or 2) cause phase issues if you edited the duplicated tracks to make them sound slightly different from each other? (Like changing the amp sim settings, adding a VST of some sort, etc.) I'm having a difficult time making sticato rhythms sound synced together and wondered if this would maybe be a simple solution.

    What would you do, if the floor tom is totally out of phase in left and right OH, while the snare's phase matches perfectly? Is it a big issue or is the tom's tone more about the close mics?

    • @haha71687
      @haha71687 5 років тому +1

      This is due to the tom being off to the side. Its sound hits the closer mic first. I wouldn't worry about it. A big part of stereo width is subtle phase differences.
      You can try put your overheads in XY configuration to minimise this if you want. You lose some perceived stereo width but gain cleaner phase across the drum set.

    I once had an instructor in college who said that the chances of phase problems between 2 mics increases with the distance between the mics. Because of that, he would insist on setting up the overheads for a drum kit in an xy configuration directly over the drummer's head. The auditorium had a pair of mics permanently installed up above the stage. There was at least 20 ft between the mics, and yet we never had any phase problems with them. Have you had phase problems with overhead mics, and do you think that keeping the mics close together helps?

    • @davidfuller581
      @davidfuller581 5 років тому

      A spaced pair setup can cause weird phasing issues. The further away the mics are from the source the less it's an issue, though.

    • @soundman1402
      @soundman1402 5 років тому +1

      You probably did have phasing issues. If you didn't do a mono sum on these mics, you wouldn't necessarily hear the problem. (I can hear it without summing to mono, but most people claim they can't tell. I think they do hear it, but don't know what they're hearing.) The phase issue is caused by a sound arriving at one mic at a different time from another mic. The farther apart the mics, the longer the delay can be, and the more you can be affected. If you were using the stereo pair of mics to record in stereo e.g. a choir concert, the sound is enough of a melange that you wouldn't hear the problems of missing bass; likely, you'd hear other phase issues in the midrange that don't manifest as obviously as the bass going missing.

    Thanks for recommending this video on this week's VC episode (last comment of the episode). Out of curiosity, I'm gonna ask my guitar player (who runs the DAW) if there's a "mono" option (probably is) and a "phase" option. I'd like to see if there's any difference in what I've been listening to (which I think is a fantastic job of mic-ing the drums.. don't get me wrong) and what it COULD be. Might be fun to fuck around with. I've never run a DAW, so I know only enough to be a dangerous jerk with stupid questions... all in the name of having fun and enjoying my hobby -- and perhaps leaving to my kids and grandkids something to remember me by. We (I ponied up the cash) bought a Focusrite 18i20 based on your video which replaced a Delta 1010 that ran only on Windows 98 and that machine took a shit. I had my son cobble together a new top of the line computer for mixing audio (Thanks a lot, Alex.. a thousand dollars? WTF. But, okay... as long as it's gonna work, go for it...). We're having fun with the set up. And thanks for the tip about the Grinelli SM57-90. It's a blessing.
    So, for the record: Based on your videos, I've purchased a Drum Dial tuner (analog version), The Focusrite interface, the Grinelli version of the SM57 and some merch. Go tell your potential sponsors that you can move gear and get them them to contribute to the channel. I've not been disappointed with anything I mentioned above.

    Oh yeah, when things get out of phase and the frequencies intermingle, they’ll lose their sound and cancel each other out... it sucks.

    How far do you have to go with editing guitars due to phase? I have projects with quad tracked guitars and every now and again the phase will be a little off between 1 or 2 of the takes. It's almost inaudible to the human ear. Do I really need to go in and snip and slide/invert every spot where it looks like the phase is slightly off?

      i get a good laugh about the over obsessing about treated spaces. cause its very much a preference + knowledge problem. someone with alot of experience and knowledge can make almost any room record well. in fact we see plenty of studios make use of untreated spaces for micing atmospheric's/reveb. the last thing you want is a room and recording thats is so sterile it sounds like your playing in a box.

    Question about the using a cheap mixer to buss the guitar sound. I used this technique on a small and cheap board that does not have a polarity invert feature. I can't seem to get a sound that has the guitars from two speakers in phase. I can move the mics slightly to try and compensate, but that doesn't work in all volume blending possibilities. It always goes out of phase at some point when mixing the volumes together. Any ideas on how to correct this? Thanks for all the tips btw! It's helped me step up my home recording game a ton.

    What ya think about this Glenn? Mr. I know everything because I have a college degree and have been doing this for 20 years. Well I don't have a college degree and I've been doing this for 50 years. I'm too smart to get a stupid college degree. I trumped the electrical engineers. I trumped the acoustic engineers. I trumped the college professors. I trumped other chief engineers. And that's no joke.
    In fact the greatest compliment I have received. Is from a musician in a rock band I had previously recorded live. Who came into my control room to listen to the playback. Absolutely freaked as to the sound. But of course. It's because it's my control room, my design, my audio engineering expertise. And this guy tells me..." Remy, I'm a highly accomplished musician. I tour the country. I tour the world. I've recorded that some of the finest studios in the world. Their control rooms. Don't sound like your control room." So he heard my Positive Pressure Wave Design, control room philosophy. And without knowing why? Until I told him.
    Then he ran home to try it out for himself. On his crappy system. And he couldn't believe the sonic improvement? Especially in a room he knew not to be anywhere near ideal in its acoustics. This changes lives! This is a game changer!
    And so I have now turned everyone here onto my little secret. That only about 1% of studios out there get. They either get it on their own by listening and experimenting. Are they got turned on to this by a friend. From another friend. That got turned onto this from me. Including API Audio Inc. One of the most highly respected console manufacturers in the world. And owned and operated by a colleague and friend of mine for 13 years, Paul Wolff. And it absolutely blew their minds.
    Now the only reason why I am here? Is because I like Glenn Fricker. He is 99% right on with everything he has told you folks. Except for my 1% contribution here.
    So wow I'm really nothing more than a very talented electronic technician, recording engineer and producer. I am the Mother God of all audio. And most of the great and famous engineers. They never went to school for audio engineering. As there were no college degrees for this. Providing college degrees in this field. Is just a moneymaking plan for those academic institutions. Be they commercial for-profit universities or state-funded colleges. They all need to make a buck. On you and you and you and even you. And now Glenn is preaching the same inept clueless blather.
    So let this be a lesson to Glenn. And for everyone else here. As I have just given you all, my secret. The 99% of those out there. Have no idea about? I've even had some moron electrical engineers that I worshiped for many years. Give me every mathematical reason and textbooks reference to, that I'm wrong. But I know I'm not. And so do others. Who have greatly benefited from this enlightenment and actual real solid certifiable and demonstratable, example of mine. And because if you are an idiot? And you simply invert the phase, into your power audio amplifiers or powered speakers. That makes for a subtle difference. That is audible. But the speakers are still moving in the wrong direction. I mean this is the most idiotic thing ever in Pro Audio History. And it's all because of academic idiots.
    And so why did I turn everybody here onto this? It's simple really. I want people to be able to make recordings. That they can be proud of. So I give a lot of my self to others. And expect nothing back in return. Except for an occasional thank you. Of which I am flattered by.

      @@Stefan- oh great. Thanks. So, quad tracking guitars, four different takes, will never cause phase cancellation, right?

    • @Stefan-
      @Stefan- 5 років тому

      No, not really, although they may sound and be close to having an inverted phase, in reality they will pretty much never really be exactly inverted. Regarding quad tracking, i would personally not use it unless you play 4 different things since in my opinion there is a risk of getting a messy untight sound image if used for regular rythm tracking. You can get massive guitars with just using single left and right tracked guitars, most classic metal albums are done this way, its easy to get lost with the almost unlimited resources we have today, but often less is actually more.

      @@Stefan- that's really a great advice, thank you again so much Stefan. Recording just two tracks, would you just pan one hard left and one hard right or instead would you do a blend somehow around one 75% left and one 75% right?

    • @Stefan-
      @Stefan- 5 років тому

      Alessandro Arzilli Im glad if i can help :-) Personally i have never panned hard right/left and i am not likely to, but there are really no rules, in my opinion although the soundstage can sound nicely wide panning hard left/right it also can make it sound thin. I think 75% is a very good starting point at least and you could test what works for you by gradually changeing the panning between 75 and 100% and have a good listen at different settings both on headphones and monitors/speakers. Its a big difference between headphones and speakers since the sound from speakers are mixed in and otherwise affected by the room while left and right channels are completely isolated from each other in headphones and unaffeted by the room (obviously).
      I can have a listen later on maybe tomorrow at the songs you are refering to and tell you what i think about the sound.
