It’s not the cooling system that causes these headgaskets to go bad, it’s actually a design flaws in the head bolts where they slowly back themselves out and thus creates a headgasket leak.
Car Wizard or Hoovie did a feature about this issue... Apparently later ones have the modified head bolts/studs from the factory. Given the age, it should be safe enough. 😉
97-99 are the worst years of the northstar longevity. They started using Dexcool which becomes acidic overtime. GM rates the coolant at 100k miles and doesn't follow a calendar schedule.. Causes almost 100% failure. 2000-2003 cars will last if maintained but have been known for blowing up without flushing coolant. 2004+ is really solid If you flush the coolant enough it reduces the chance of having corrosion build up on the head bolts. typically is fine if electrolysis took its place with no corrosion from the coolant to reverse the effects. They will last damn near forever. I've seen a funeral home hearse with 19k miles that had blown head gaskets. some make it 180k some make it 15k. depends on how often the coolant is changed Randy is 100% right. Awesome purchase. If the head gaskets ever go bad try using thermalweld its significantly more effective than bluedevil.. Unless you want to fix it the correct way with head studs.
that northstar motor is a highly underestimated engine. It wasn't a bad engine, just a bad design. I currently have an '02 Deville DTS with 183k miles, and still going strong on the original headgaskets and headbolts(which are the real issue). the check coolant light is a common issue on these, and only way to fix it, is with a new coolant resivoir(about $60 on amazon here in nc). don't worry about others knocking you for buying it, you want it and can afford it? buy it and enjoy it!
Keep doing what you do I got I got the same one but mine's black I know people talk about the North Stars but at the end of the day it is on how you maintain your engine keeping the oil change keeping a radiator thermostat change and water pump change I haven't had any problems out of mines and being running it for a while and people still would love to ride in a Cadillac limousine just my opinion
You are my hero now you got my dream car not really so much into six-door limos but I love limousine came close to getting one before I got paralyzed can't help it I've always been fascinated with big vehicles and a limousine is number one on the list number two is a bus LOL great job can't wait to see the next video
I have a 2004 Cadillac Deville and the battery is under the back seat. Oh and by the way i got my DeVille at 28,000 miles and i put 120,000 miles on it in the last 5 years and she is still running strong as long as you take good care of them they will last a long time.
I have a 2000 cadillac deville. If your car is not overheating and running fine, you're gonna need a new coolant resevoir. The coolant level sensor is built into the coolant resevoir and is the only way to replace it. Luckily they range between 50-70 bucks. Once replaced that "check Coolant level" should disapear. Congrats.
I've had 5 northstar powered cadillacs, a 96 Eldorado, 99 Deville, 98 Seville STS, 2001 Seville SLS, 2005 Deville, never had the headgasket issue. One odd issue, 4 of them had ignition switch problems which caused a number of ancillary issues. I have several Lexuses and a Mercedes, but definitely miss that era of Cadillac.
Amazing what you can buy for under $5K in America, I live in Germany and everything costs a mint. Nice deal Randy, somebody could make themselves a nice little business picking up from and dropping off at airports and the like.
Those lights on the side of the car are called Coach lights. Honestly, for as cheap as they are I would just upgrade them with an LED one. Can find them on Amazon,, different prices depending on your tastes.
They always take good care of their cars. Their reputation would not survive a breakdown or dirty car. I pass a funeral home on the way home from work and they are always cleaning their cars
I did the same thing I bought a $700 Salvage SUV sight unseen with minimal damage and replaced the battery and drove it 400 miles home was nervous the whole time especially because the cluster wasn’t lit up the whole time luckily it was just a simple fuse
I don’t know much about the north star engine, but I know what overheating is… seeings how our family vehicle is a Detroit 6.5 suburban, but thank god that’s over with now. Soooooo, keep that cooling system maintained well and it shouldn’t give you problems. Sick deal man git er dun.
If those pillar light covers aren’t broken, stick them in a clear container with hydrogen peroxide and put them out in the sun for a couple of days and they should turn white again. That bulb is a Sylvania #74, get them LED on Amazon, a pack of 10 for like $8.00
Those yellowed light covers can be brought back by submerging them in hydrogen peroxide, while under a strong UV light. It might take a few days, but it should make them white again.
Engine Swap it for a ls from a Monte Carlo ss mid 2000s. I had one the flaw is the engine design the heads would warp, cylinder walls will crack. It was a nice car I had a 2000 dhs model and I loved the ride quality
U got yourself a fairly nice old ride with low mileage, it just needs some TLC, vaccum it out real good, and have it washed, put some new tires on it, and in general, give it a little attention.
The dealer mentioned on the key ring may have the light covers you're looking for, if not might be able to source them for you through the conversion manufacturer. In addition, I'll suggest you put that fan back on it more reliable by assisting the cooling system.
Love the video randy, love all off them. The extra fan is probably added (factory or after) because of the fact that at the funeral home they don't drive at regular speed and the engine gets hot fast, so maybe therfore the extra fan.
I own a non limo 2001 Deville. Love the car. My battery is located under the rear seat, not sure on a limo though. Pull bottom cushion forward then up. These cars are known for the level censor in the coolant bottle to malfunction.
Engine swap might I suggest the engine from the C7 Zr1 Corvette. for the battery check the engine compartment front corners down low second location under the back seat.
i had a 98 hurst (based off the Deville) like this, and i loved it. mine was funeral retiree, too. the biggest issue i had, is popping the coolant hose going to the back heater going over railroad track that i would bottom out. i ended up just bypassing the rear heater system. i had that thing for like 3 years. by the end of its life, i had no ac, no heat at all, but i drove it until it died. i would love to get another one. the good thing about funeral retirees, they were normally taken care of properly, as they do want the bereaving families to be in a nice comfortable car. having to buy premium gas does suck, but at least when i had mine, it was to bad. i did put 87 in it one time, it out of habit right after buying it, and i knew pretty instantly, not to do that again. it ran so rough. of course my kids loved it. i ran IT service calls in it, and the conversation you have with the customers were great.
Hey Randy that gas cap issue is a evap issue..something between the tank and the front of the car..my 07 Pontiac grand prix says the exact same thing..got to remember these were parts bin cars so alot of sensors and parts you can find on just about any gm car of the same category. Mine happens to be the fuel tank sensor it sits on top of the gas tank in the back. Should be the same on that cadi you just got. But those are great cars if like you said maintained regularly . I'm super familiar with all gms and I been watching you for a long time like I had mentioned way back not to long ago about the Tahoe you had back at the farm and then you only had I think 40 k subs. But yeah man check out the gas tank sensor and check your fuel filler neck make sure it's not leaking from around the tank and anything associated with that..otherwise that light will come and go ..usually will go out after you drive it down to about three qaurters of a tank of gas and comes back on at half or a little below..just saying it's nothing to worry about just the sensor freaking out lol..great purchases my guy happy to see how far you have come.
people hate on the northstar but the headgasket/headstud issue happens when the car is run hard. constant high rpms a northstar limo is the safest northstar to buy until 2003 when they fixed the problem
The bulb socket is called W2x4,6d for the sidemarker light. Mostly they are only 1,2w , but you can find them upwards to 4w. Philips number is 12516cp 😉 love that limmo😊
Also, who was the Coach Builder. check their quality control. Some did not have that good of reputation. Check the frame stretch underneath it. I had a Lincoln Stretch and Brea did not do that well of a job. be careful of putting on a lift. IT HAS TO BE FLAT LIFTED. The stretch may bend
The yellow discoloring on the paint is from iron in water from irrigation system that was spraying on the limo. TIP: Use one part toilet bowl cleaner and one part water and spray on the stain and wash off the limo. Wipe off with cloth. The best toilet bowl cleaner is to get “The Works” from Wal-Mart. Hope this helps Randy. I had the same issue with my truck.
I enjoy enjoy driving cars I know nothing about home. The '93 Cutless Supreme I bought had been sitting so it had a low tire and needed gas. I didn't have an ignition so I had to learn how to start and turn off the engine. I had to drive that car on the highway. But I paid $300 plus tax, and registration. I've had good luck with cheap '90s cars.
Hey Randy. A cool car. You are asking a decent price for it. I'm sure you will get it. I like Caddilacs owned many for drivers demo derbied a bunch of them. Thanks for the video. Hey where is TKs Cheifton.
I not look at comments but discolored in paint is from parking next to sprinkler system using well water pretty sure that's the issue on left rear side of stretchy

What a nice limo! Awesome Randy!
The pusher fan was added by the builders for the back ac because it has to work 2 times as hard I'd wire it into the ac so it's only on when ac is on
If you turn off the rear a/c the pusher fan should shut off
Agree. Having it running constantly while idling alone at funerals is probably contributing to a dead battery.

In Estonia, a tire change costs from 25 dollars per set, up to 75 dollars per set, with balancing. 16 inch wheels are 30 dollars per set
And 17inch wheels are 40 dollars per set
Woahhh an amazing video i guess i missed.
It was a funeral car, thus the low mileage. The setup even presents as a lead vehicle for the family of the hearse car.

Definite bend. Speed bumps too
The yellow discoloring on the paint is from iron in water from irrigation system that was spraying on the limo.
You will need #73 bulbs for the opera lights. Readily available as they were used in dash clusters for years. Keep up the great work Randy.
