After many years in the diaspora and starting to think of retirement back home ,we ,(my wife and I) started to brainstorm different ideas.
We settled on free range organic chicken farming! 🥚🐣🐓😍. We will also grow organic vegetables.
We have lived in the United Kingdom for just over 20 years with our five children who were all home educated.
While living in the U.K we became very aware of food standards because food was not the same as what we had left behind.
Very early on we started buying organic food and wild fish. We would like to continue on this path of healthy eating and growing our own food.
The chickens will be pasture raised. We are implementing a permaculture farming method.
We will also be using the regenerative agriculture approach to help the soils get all the necessary nutrients.
We bought the land which had lots of gum trees which took a lot of nutrients out of the soil. We need to add these back using the regenerative agriculture approach.
We will use this platform to share information we learn along the way.
There was a pond on the farm which has dried out but we need to revive it as part of permaculture farming.
    What is regenerative agriculture?
Soil health and the regeneration of topsoil (the surface layer of soil) are the main priorities of regenerative agriculture. Going well beyond organic farming, regenerative agriculture is a system of agricultural practices and principles that increases ecosystem health, improving nutrients in foods, which almost become a by-product of the planet’s restoration. Soil Heroes
    What is permaculture?
It involves taking care of the earth and working with it. We will be using systems like rain capture and solar systems. Trying to be off grid as much as possible.

As for the Land Rover Discovery, it's a show pony. An older ex military Defender is designed to be more repairable while in the field. Maybe to the point you can do it yourself if you have tools.

In africa if you don't buy your farm land, if you rent for example when you start making progress on your farm one day the owner will ask to live

    • @saint_shaun
      @saint_shaun 7 днів тому +6

It's not your land, so yes the owner can ask you to leave this true of renting anything anywhere in the world. The trick is to not invest anything into rented land that you're not willing leave behind, so when the owner want's the land back you just pick-up and leave and by that point you'll probably have enough experience that its worth considering buying your own land.

A few more things to consider when you try to invest whilst you are away:
    1. Never use or rely on family or friends for your investments.
    2. It's difficult for your investments to flourish if you're not on the ground.
    3. Let people on the ground have the same level of thinking as you are on your investments, so they see value in it.
Ignoring these things will give you a heart attack.

This is why you need to be good with numbers or employ someone who is good in numbers to run any business. If you cannot measure it then you are in big Trouble. Metrics matter.
You just said you were spending $400 a week which is $5,600 in 14 weeks so if you had 1400 chicks that is exactly $4 without touching a calculator. Now assuming a dollar cost for each chick then each chick cost $5 to raise. Now you have not added any labor costs or other overheads. The question becomes how much was the market price for a fully grown chicken at the time.
Guys for any business plan, try to model what your costs and revenue outlooks look like. If you have a few extra dollars you hire someone like myself with a finance and business school background to crunch the numbers.

Mechanics having completely damaged it beyond repair. One mechanic actually told me he had fixed the engine but I shouldn't drive over 100km/h only for another mechanic to show me what he had done to my car and tell me it doesn't make sense to say he's fixed a car but limits your speed.

I think that you should post on youtube or your own platform to get advice regarding your plans before you proceed. Other people would then be able to advise you accordingly. Trust your instincts and intuition. If in doubt you are probably missing something. Plus Zim requires advice from than 1 professional before progressing. Obtain any business contracts and read in advance as you cannot really rely on verbal contracts in court.

  • @normanmusimwa2058

I see your point, but l believe you have "over simplified" the land issue. Land in Zimbabwe IS NOT EASY TO GET. Not the affordable and secure type anywhere. "Sabhuku deals will explode someday. We have already seen that. Land is "easy" to get when you know people..... the right people, and that is not always true for most of us.
I bought my land , with a tittle deed and l do agree that once l spent my money on the land, l (am) struggled to get cash to capitalise the project. I am still struggling with that. The beauty with my situation is that l can afford to look at everything LONGTERM. I bought land exactly where l wanted (next to a major highway) ..... and that is not always possible with "allocated land."
Leasing land is another option which l looked into but the challenge is that our people have no respect for lease agreements. Leasing a farm is not like Leasing an apartment were with 3 months notice.... a person can move out. Also half the farms available for lease have ABSOLUTELY ZERO INFRASTRUCTURE.
MY opinion is that if you are taking a long term view of Zimbabwe....... l suggest buy your land WITH TITTLE DEEDS. IF the goal is to retire here..... don't start with farming. Rather, while you work in the UK, work on the infrastructure you will need, particularly the infrastructure that is immune from theft (boreholes,Internet, water storage, electricity connection, farm house, underground piping and if you have someone at sight, fencing even. )
On the farm house never build fancy but rather basic (focus on views, lanscaping etc) . Put real money on fittings, esp internal fittings. What you want is a feeling of satisfaction when you are in that house.
The other GOOD option if you are not looking for a large piece of land is to use your ancestral land. That land (usually were your grand parents & parents are burried) actually has pretty good tenure. If you can survive or manage family politics l would take that option too.

If you're looking to buy from the UK, just make sure you get a car that has parts readily available in Zim or South Africa. I would recommend Japanese makes (Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi etc) sold in UK over the European ones (Renault, Volvo, Jaguar, Fiat etc). At least with the Japanese ones, some of the parts are interchangeable between models that are already there in Zim. You may get away with the German makes because they're popular with high end population, but parts will be very expensive.

Free land in ZIMBABWE I don't think you can get it. The demand for land is high however RENTING is the best option.
There are factors considered when starting agribusiness( farmers as a business)
    ie
    1. proximity to main road and market for perishables
2.Water and the means of harnessing it to use
    3. CAPITALinclude human ,seeds,fertilisers ,chemicals,money etc.
    4. Farming equipments
    5. Infrastructure
Farming as a business when renting. You need to be clever enough and you must be smart.
Construct an agreement of lease that fevers yourself. Most farmers they just do it verbally rental agreement and by the end of successful project they change the goal post. To avoid this you need to engage the lawyers to draft an agreement be able to explain to the owner of the land that its not Agreement of sale.
Can be constructed in local language however in Roman in italics on other conditions especially the things like breach of contract which favours yourself.
The land owner will keep the other duplicate
When you got into conflict you will refer to the documentation and take the matter to the courts.
