I have a big pieces of land in Hurungwe and want to go and live kumusha full time. But this will depend witg water availability.
From my experience of researching theres no machine which can tell you if there’s water under the surface. Yes some machines and geo satellites can give you a rough idea.
Finding underground water is a gamble.
My plan is im going to involve all the “machines”, technology, satellites imagery, maporofita, n’anga and mhondoro. Hopefully hopefully i will be lucky.

I wish I could actually talk to you. I went through exactly the same thing. From your first story to this one, I drilled to 100m and I only got household type water, can’t fill up a 5000L tank per day. All I will say now is land ownership is overrated. I now rent multiple plots with minimum infrastructure investment, my criteria is I need to see water that I can walk into and actually touch before I start investment. Only after this did I start making money from farming

I really admire people like you who, even though you might be risk-averse, still take the leap and put yourself out there. It’s because of pioneers like you that people like me-who are afraid of failing and losing money-can learn, grow, and do things differently. You may feel like you’ve faced setbacks, but honestly, you’ve succeeded in teaching me (and many others) invaluable lessons. Thank you for being an inspiration and helping us all navigate this journey

My brother, since your land is of granite from 10 metres downwards, I'll advise you research more into granite quarry as granite can be used for kitchen worktops, tiles, tombstones and many more.

Granite quarry mining is a super-intensive operation that requires heavy machinery. Commercial operations can cost up to around US$100 000 to start the project and very capital intensive. A small farm/plot is not commercially viable. That's why this sector has largely been taken over by Chinese investors, who are given large tracts of land to mine.

I am not an expert on farming and anything water, but I have seen very successful farms use rain water harvesting. When you mentioned water harvesting I was really happy you know about this. If you do more research on how much on average your farms receives rain water, you can calculate how much you can capture and store. 1. Dig large well lined ponds. 2. Use gutters on your structures to capture rain water, and divert the water in tanks or to the ponds. 3. Dig swales on contour that stops surface runoff and allows water to percolate in the soil. 4. Use check dams on ‘dry’ streams so when it rains, the water is allowed to seek through your land. And lastly don’t allow your soil to be bare.always plant a cover crop to protect the soil from the sun. All the best in your project. As a side -note, I have a 15,000 litre concrete water tank that is already full just from the roof of my house in Malawi, after just over a month of rain. You got this!

Sounds like u got a granite quarry. Maybe it's a worth it to do that and maybe you'll find other precious minerals in the process .or diamonds etc. as far as water harvesting goes that can be incorporated into it bcuz you have a hard bottom. You need to direct ground water passively into ponds . So you use your total sqft to gather the rain

I don't think you should give up your farming dreams yet just because of this setback. You can still do smallstock (sheep or goats) or poultry projects on your land but you will have to bowse water from someplace and store it in jojo tanks on the farm, for example a 10 000litre jojo tank could suffice for such a project. Just checkout how expensive it could be on you, but there are several such projects where I live and they are doing well.

  • @rendanimahada1875
    @rendanimahada1875 5 днів тому

Your next options are, rainwater harvesting. Or paying local municipality to install a pipeline to your farm. Those are the cheap options.
Expensive options is building a mini dam/pond and get atleast two trucks to fill it up from water from nearby river maybe.
This one would require you to do more than just chicken farming. Maybe have cattle n sheep's. They can atleast try to make up for the cost after couple years.
You can balance harvesting with this one to cut costs.
Just a suggestion brother wish you success on the farm.

I feel for you, but do not give up on your dreams. Focus on solutions for the water problem.
I drilled to dry two wells at my farm, and I am now planning on rainwater harvesting ponds to solve the water problems. If you have natural drainage features like seasonal streams/ gullies, they can be utilized to capture and store water in lined/ unlined ponds.
As long as your area receives any kind of rain it is very feasible to harvest the water for later use. Also look into making landscape features like level swales, zai pits etc on your land that passively harvest water and encourage it to stay rather than runoff from your property. This will help recharge your shallow wells.

Well done for trying in any business venture, you will guaranteed at different growth levels suffer many tough draining challenges.
The resilience, you will develop is what makes you a winner ,an over comer.
      Buying land for business
      Essential, even for a home.
      Get surveys done.
Make sure land sales agent is aware this is essentially.
      Do due diligence
Observe the area, the checks you did later, next time local knowledge of everything and anything is essential.
      Speak to neighbours, local people
      Before you buy.
      If you want to farm
You need capital or are prepared to star very small even with water.
      What about mining the Granite.
      I suggest you stop
Go and rent a small 10
      5 hectare plot with water.
You only put up move able ,things buildings ,irrigation to meet your needs.
      And learn all about farming
Then you know and would gain valuable experience. whether you are a farmer or not
And if you have a business mind you will find the business that you will make flourish.
      Europeans, Arabs, Indians Chinese
Are able to run most of the business make billions despite huge challenges in the economy and governance.
You need a lot of money to succeed and black people at home and the diaspora.
We need an extra budget for family and the odd scammer.
Also any costly or small, with companies, best to get recommendations.
Even in the Diaspora Europe, USA, UK
      The building, construction, mechanics, taxi
      Drivers have too many scammer,
Who are not qualified and con people bringing disrepute to skilled honest workmen.
It only less because, customers will take it to court.
      If customers refused this nonsense
      They would stop.
      Make aware
Take it to court, go see your M P
      If it is legal.
Then The your local M P,consumer Council, send emails push, highlight, other peoples experiences .
That's the process in USA, EU, uk etc
If people just complain amongst ourselves and the Internet
But don't partake in our democracy by using the lawful normal way to get issues and violations of peoples rights.
      Even in the Diaspora
      People campaign for years,petitions,lobby politicians.
That what councillors, MPs are for.
      It's called basic civic duties.
We are all partcof of the changes we want to see
      It's not just governments responsibility
      We are responsible too.
For ensuring they do there job,and we contribute to them doing there job.
Only we can build the nation and continent we want .

If you can’t irrigate you have to relly on rain if you don’t catch it when it falls you wount be farming. Pretty basic

Standard here for drilling is $100 per metre if they don’t strike water and $150 if they do. After thinking a bore was my answer . 3 years on I don’t think my bore was needed at all. It’s a lovely security net having water.
Wish I knew stuff about your land. There’s a lot of different things I did which has made our farm to thrive. Our farm gets an average of 800mm of rain per year, plus we have extremely hot temperatures. For 7-8 months per year we constantly sit at between 30-40 degrees Celsius. We grow thousands of fruit trees very successfully.
Most people are clueless. Send me some information and I’m sure I will have some suggestions. Also how much land do you have . Important description of land and climate or location and I will do some research.

You need to start recording the conversations you have with these people during negotiation. Id also recommend that you do have a contract and maybe it might be useful to pay a consultant in that field to go with people that are going to do a service for you so that you dont cheated because im guessing the surveyor knew there wasnt water but if they didnt come to dig they wouldnt get paid so he convinced you there was

I was sold a similar story too, but ended up paying for a 125m depth. Not sure what water quantity there is since after that there have been issues with the solar pumps not having capacity to push the water up to the tank. If the same company supplies an alternative they need to be paid for the pump, cables, transport and labour.

Borehole water in sandy soils is tricky and farming in general is at minimum a 5 year venture but overally failure is all part of the process

I think the best thing you should do is to sell that land and secure a piece of land around a water source like a stream or a river. Even if the river/stream dries up during dry seasons, you are sure if you dig a borehole in such an area you can get water. Do a manual borehole with 2-3 people digging. once you get the water, pump it to tanks and use it from there for irrigation. This way, you save a lot of costs. As a new farmer, you should always try your best to save on some costs.

Borehole drilling always made me anxious because a large portion of your money could literally go down the hole. I was drilling 2 weeks ago, fortunately found lots of water at 25m deep.
My first borehole at my previous homestead went 60 meters deep and nothing. Mt heart sank, I didn't have money

When you get land. Study the type of farming being done in the area. Check their sources of water. Are there boreholes or wells near you. Remember Zimbabwe we have farming regions and the white farmers did the research and they left the worst areas for rural areas except a few. You mentioned Epworth I know the area. There is not much farming done there except cattle ranching and they put up a game park

The land is not useless... Just agriculturally not viable. Could be a mine for some precious rocks so perhaps consider at having a mining viability survey to establish the rock formations, there maybe something wothwhile there. Zim has a lot of precious stones.... All the same what a journey bro

Yah, borehole drilling is massive gumbling.
Its a good investment for the owner because they are guaranteed to go back with full pockets whether water is found or not.
But for the farmer or customer its a sad defeat.
However dont give up, one day you will smile.

It's not that u failed. I was in Zim in November and I drilled a borehole at my place in Bindura, and another one at our rural place in Murehwa. What I realised is for the most part these drillers don't know where the water is it's pure gambling plus luck. While I was lucky to strike water at both these sites it wasn't anywhere close to the amount I anticipated. Don't give up look for another farm or another plan

    • @KlaBoi-qj8oh

Yes. The drillers don't know. The water surveyors know.
