Hi outstanding review I am planning to get this camera it’s been out for about 9 months or more for me it’s the price tag savings up one? Is are you going to start using it your self. It not only the camera but the lens that makes a vary useful tool in creating media still or video I am planning to pairing it with the atmos ninjaV+ I want to use everything this has to offer but it’s going to be a big investment for me. As a older student several teachers have made comments as to the death of high power cameras fie to the high quality of cell phone cameras and that there’s no big need to R and D of better big cameras after the a1 I may invest in a older Red 6-or 8K
      Thank you

Absolutely. I purchased my dream camera in the a7Riii back in October and it's everything I hoped it would be. Camera these days are so incredibly advanced that for anyone less than the very highest level of professionals. getting a model a few years old is actually the much better choice. I paid £1,600 for my a7Riii. The new a1 is £6,500. The amount of high quality glass you can get with that insane difference will elevate the resultant photos orders of magnitude more than the higher specs of the newer model. Plus for 110mb uncompressed RAW files at 30 FPS... you'd better have $$$ to spend on additional storage...

The full frame backside illuminated stacked sensor is a technological breakthrough that advanced the state of photography. This latest 50 megapixel design is by far the best sensor available and in fact that it makes the mechanical shutter redundant. Future medium priced cameras using this sensor or a derivative thereof, sans mechanical shutter and other features will become common and affordable.

This was a really good review. Pixel binning has been a huge issue with Sony cameras. Your demo footage wouldn’t likely show the issue. Try shooting a metal clad building with a pattern or shingles on a roof. Cameras that pixel bin cannot be used for broadcast. The S Cine tone made your face too magenta and your lips were very red. What can I say? I’m a colorist by profession. Anxious to get my A1 and see how it performs.

Jack of all trades .. Master of none .. Some day a manufacturer will make a full-frame camera for stills only .. "buy one our video cameras for video " .. I'm saving for a Phase One with two backs Mono and colour .. maybe I'll win the lottery .. meanwhile my EOS 5D Mk. II is a great camera .. even for shooting burlesque shows .. with the proper lighting .. my setup .. photography is all about light .. I know .. I'm Greek .. everyone steals our words .. My prediction: no one will ever make a stills camera without video ever again. Why? Simply because the processors and sensors can do video, and the software doesn’t cost any extra. A stills only camera would be a niche product and more expensive than one that does video. Just ignore that little red button :)

Its amazing how many photographers think higher megapixels means more noise. They view things at 100 % when they judge the noise which , because of the different megapixel counts, isn't comparing apples with apples. If you compare the global images of the full sensor, there's no significant difference in visible noise. Its when you crop and compare a 20 megapixel crop to a 20 megapixel full frame camera, that's when you see a noise difference because you're comparing 20 small megapixels to 20 much larger megapixels. Higher mpx cameras have a finer, smaller grain size which is hard to see if you're looking at the full Image. Both full sensors receive the same amount of light, that's why there's no difference in noise levels on the global image.

At 1:35 time of the video, according to the official Sony website the base ISO of Sony a7R IV and a1 is 100 expanded to 50 and certainly not ISO 64.
Only the Sony a7S III from the e-mount series has a base ISO lower than 100 at 80 expanded to 40.
The recent full frame mirrorless Leica SL2-S has a base ISO 50 but that's a different camera with a price between the Sony a1 and Sony a7R IV and a7S III.

I just got mine in the mail. Big surprise after the 400mm f/2.8 fiasco. I'm not a video shooter, so my needs perhaps aren't typical. I was blown away several years ago by the A9's stacked sensor and it's been a long wait for Gen II. Having a substantially improved sensor with two powerful processors makes this a configuration that I think will last. I frankly don't need 50 megapixels, but a 33 megapixel square format is sweeeeet. Never had a 'Blad, but I find myself so often these days cropping to 1:1 aspect ratio.
I don't think that I am alone in wanting to be able to make ALL mode changes by feel while looking through the EVF. All those fiddly analog dials on the top are an annoyance. Just give me a bunch of programmable buttons and the fewest possible arbitrary restrictions on what can be programmed through buttons.
That said, I am glad that Canon is over the long run trying to give Sony some real competition.

I love my Sony A1 with the 35-150. I also have the 150-600 and a couple others.
Sony a1 i think will be the top camera for a while still. I think it is so advanced that there's no need to upgrade. The af alone is far more superior and now with the new af and steady firmware update I'd say its extremely hard to beat. If your pictures are not turning out with either camera it's the photographers error. Even in most literature and real world reviews sony af among other things keep coming up on top. With unbiased reviewers ofcourse. I think the Sony is a little power house and if you need that extra grip you can put it on. You don't have to carry that extra weight especially when your hiking taking pics of wildlife and you have one of those huge lenses to capture your subjects. Plus with it's compact size it's more versatile so you can use it with most gimbals. If we're talking about serious videography that's huge plus. You dont have to spend more money for a larger gimbal plus all the add-ons you would use with a cage. This compact size would help keep the weight down which people dont realize how cumbersome these all that can be. So that compact body is perfect. The Sony a1 body alone is extremely versatile. And don't forget Sony makes sensors for most of these cameras including Nikon. So where would Nikon be without Sony tech. As for working in the dark i don't need gimmicks to get the job done. It's called muscle memory. It's not hard to memorize the buttons. Plus all the third-party lenses. Nikon to call this it's flagship i think is a huge error considering the z8 is rumored to come out.I just think people like to jump on the next new not necessarily the best thing. No loyalty imo. Although you can't go wrong with either in the end.

What a nice camera! What I would like to see is a few more upgrades to older cameras through software. It seems the way technology is going the electronics is getting smaller yet more powerful. Those of us who think we are techno-geeks and want the latest and greatest, but can’t afford it, just need to use what we have.

Thanks for sharing, From a usability perspective the menu system of the A1 appears to be one of its biggest disappointments where users really shouldn’t be left struggling to find settings without spending an inordinate amount of time in doing so. I know it’s been improved but sadly that’s not saying much where the sub standard menu system appears to have been a secondary consideration to Sony. From what I’ve seen you can’t even scroll through a video using the touchscreen which doesn’t rotate and falls well behind the quality of LCD displays offered by rival manufacturers. As a Nikon d850 owner looking to change systems I would have bought the A1 had it not been for the crappy UI which would leave me pulling my hair out.

Canon's standard 4K (not the 4K HQ) is really unsharp by comparison with their 4K HQ (and unusable in my opinion). I was concerned that the A1 might have the same problem. Yes Yes, great spec's, but when will technology advance to the camera anticipating when and where I want a photo and capture it while the camera is sitting on a shelf a week before I initially see the scene ?

You touched on this a little, in order for me to buy the A1 I will have to sell my A9 and my A7R4. I'm good with departing with the A9, but will I miss the A7R4? I shoot mostly wildlife and nature photography and a fair amount of video. Oh-and BTW I'll still have to come out of pocket. Although I'm hoping to recoup some of that out of pocket cost once the freelance world opens back up.

4:40 ... I actually don't want the camera to automatically choose human/animal/bird, I want to keep control and if I choose animal, I don't want the camera to suddenly start focusing on humans.

I think he's asking for a setting where it automatically chooses the best AF setting depending on what subject is being focused on. A pretty tall order as it's basically subject recognition.

Ted, can we look forward to a review of the Fujifilm GFX 100S? It doesn't come close to the Sony A1 specs for video, sports or wildlife photography - but for landscape, architectural, street, still-life and fine-art portrait work, I think it might just have the edge. I'm thinking about selling a kidney and buying both... What do you think?

  • @techtt6213

The A1 actually downsamples 8,6k, that is why it is so sharp compared to the R5

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 3 роки тому

But it’s just 4:2:0 so that’s a big downside for many who need something higher. And there is a crop too. With less Bitrate it’s no Wonder that it has a higher running time. On the other hand default mode is 15minuted which is less then r5 25-30 minutes. You can deactivate the overheating limit but at your own risk of course. Not sure if in this case people wouldn’t been better with a dedicated video camera

I would like to have all 3 of them, bc then i will be recording music studio sessions, using 3 cameras gives you almost a 3 D effect bc you film the same scene out of different angles. I just think that we will have to wait for the new M chip based Apple Mac Pro, would be surprised if the new 16 inch Macbook Pro M1X or the i 10 Razer Book Studio Edition can render and upload the footage of such 3 powerful and codex heavy cameras ?

Nice vid as always. Just a thought & I'm sure you & all your viewers know, when comparing the A1 to the R5, you have to think about the price point. If I could afford to make the switch I would pre order the A1 & all the Sony lens that I would need for it also. Let me go check my lottery tickets. Is it true on Sony cameras there is no option to turn off noise reduction? I thought I heard another reviewer mention that they wish they provided the choice with this camera.

I wish Ted and other UA-camrs would make it clear whether or not they are being paid by the camera manufactures to do these reviews. Paid as in a fee or free equipment. Also, although new technology can be quite interesting I much preferred Teds' series on the great photographers. Cartier-Bresson used very modest equipment compared to today but his pictures were wonderful and have stood the test of time.

I’ll make it real clear. Sony doesn’t pay anyone for reviews. We got loaner cameras which will be returned. I paid regular price for all my personal Sony gear. When a video is paid for I disclose it in the description and with UA-cam as required by law. If this were a sponsored video I would have said so. Glad you like the old videos.

Ted , i need your help ! A few years ago i was looking into quadrant framing and i found (probably in one of your videos) a catalog of the works of a famous film director(or a producer or something). He took photos of events and stuff, but the framing was odd. It looked like 35 mm vertical shot with people in the lower half of the frame and empty space in the upped half. But i forgot the name and now i can't find it. Does it ring a bell ?

Super impressive, but I can't help but feel like it's just crippled enough to make me prefer the A7S3 for video and the A7R4 for stills. It's sort of "jack of all trades, king of none" for me. But by all means a mean technological feat. Makes the Canon R5 look like a bit of a bargain, though. I wonder what the Canon R1 will be like.
