I like the signal because of its ingenious multipurpose utility function. I agree it's, it's own stand alone kit. However, no one will just go out into the wild with just this tool in hand imho. You will always go out with a complete bushcrafting kit, where this tool will shine is if you loose any of your primary bushcraft tools. The Signal has the necessary tools to get you out of a jam. And then there's each person's individual preferences on which multipurpose tool is the most significant to them. So I enjoyed reading through the comments because I'm 1 for options. So, thank you gents. I've personally own several Leatherman and Gerber multi tools, as a handyman they have earned a place in my tool bag as in my bug out bag and bushcraft bag. Blessings to all. The Rebar belongs in a kit. The Signal is the kit. The Signal is the ultimate survival ready stand alone belt tool you wear as an edc to be ready when you do not have your backpack.
Good point but the Rebar is pocketable, or can be easily carried on a belt pouch. It's a shame it's not designed to have a pocket clip, like they did with the Bond.
@@simonh6371 the Signal has a belt clip and it was very easy for me to carry in my pocket. There is no way I would want to carry the Rebar in my pocket.
@@SubUrbanNinja-EDC I haven't got a Signal to compare with my Rebar but my Rebar is surprisingly compact, it actually sits fine in the 5th pocket of my jeans although it does stick out above it a bit. If I am in the outdoors I put it in a belt pouch though.
To answer both, I think rebar is compact enough for the compact (easier to carry than a Swiss Champ?). While i agree the signal is a kit in itself, I still think it is not the best for everyday bushcraft but great for emergency situations.
I love my Leatherman Signal, I use it for ADC. I also own the Rebar, Super Tool 300 and the Wave. I also have 2 Swiss Victorinox knifes (Huntsman & Explorer). Those are the Multitools that I will ever need. By the way great video Urban Knife Guy :).
Personally, I think the Wave Plus is the best all around tool for everyday carry. I think it's also a close second to the Free P4 for bushcraft due to it's similarity in tools, minus the one hand useability. The toughness of both is phenominal. Also, the Wave Plus is currently 2/3rds the price of the Free P4
Yeah its an EDC tool, I would still take it to my bushcraft camp, although not use it primerily, but its good in case one of my main dedicated tools fail.
The signal is my edc multitool mainly because there’s a ferro rod. I only really use the pliers, drjver, and bottle opener anyways, so carrying a way to make fire on me is a no brainer.
For the average outdoorsman I do think this doesn’t hit the mark. For me this niche fits me perfect for SAR. I can fix search equipment with it, grab canteen cups from the fire, process wood, and it’s nice to know I have a backup ferro rod and whistle tied to me. Even the hammer is nice if you had to break a window to get someone from a vehicle!
I don’t have the rebar but I have the wave plus, and I can see your point of view far as it not being bushcraft I have dedicated ferro rod for a dedicated purpose, I wouldn’t be shocked if leatherman wants to add a compass on the signal lol
For camping I stick with my Wave+ and I have a separate 2-in-1 Ferro Rod/Emergency Whistle. With that combo the only things I am missing from the Signal are an awl and the hammer which I can survive without either of those. I think the Signal would be handy to have just in case you lose your primary knife or ferro rod. I just may get one for that reason
For me its an everyday carry. It has the tools I need in a pinch to save time everyday and incase there is an emergency where I would need to light a fire or something else more bushcrafty stuff.
I don't think I would be interested in a multi tool for bushcraft (depending on definition), let alone survival. IMHO it is a backup camping tool at best. Maybe a tool for a farmer or other outdoor jobs, but you don't really need a screwdriver for survival for example, but might for camping if carrying more technical gear like stoves etc.
I think that the Signal and maybe the Skeletool are essentially just toys. The latter might be a decent starter tool for a pre-teen, but that's about it.

Honestly, if you're using the Signal as your go to "Bush Craft" tool, you're probably an idiot. A multi-tool to me is a must have when out in the woods, but it will always exist as a backup for my primary tools.
And because it's the backup, it'll go in your pack, and if it's in your pack why not go with the better Leathermans? I don't see how people justify paying more than a Wave for less tools and more gimmicks
I prefer an SAK to any Leatherman for bushcraft. I tend not to need pliers and screwdrivers out in the woods. I love the SAK saws. I also like the corkscrew, which comes in handy for untying knots. I’ve also made several modifications to my edc SAKs that provide a ferro rod, needle and thread, a pen and a pin all on top of all the tools. The SAKs are also lighter.
I've personally found pliers to be incredibly useful when camping, for example for pulling out splinters or pulling tiny threads or fishing line tight, picking hot stuff out of the fire and loosening tight knots. Being able to cut or manipulate any tin or metal you find can also be very useful
But how do you get into the bush? Do you drive a truck? A quad? A dirt bike? ...the pliers and screwdriver might be more handy out there than ya think.
You are trying REALLY HARD to make it sound like the shortcomings of the rebar are features instead of bugs… Fail one - Drivers. You’re stuck with ONLY what the rebar offers and have no ability to change it out like on the signal. “You might lose it…” is bullshit. I’ve had bits for multi tools for decades and haven’t lost them in the field. I call bullshit… Fail two - No external tools. You have to open the rebar to access anything. Fail three - No ferro rod or sharpener. Yes, the rebar has a file in it, how in the hell am I going to use that to sharpen the blade in the rebar… that’s right, I’m not… Fail four - Smaller, slimmer, more compact… Yes, the rebar IS these things, and they have nothing to do with bushcraft. If you are trying to gram weenie go visit the ultralight backpackers… Fail five - Serrated blade. In decades I’ve never benefitted from a serrated blade. At least in the form that I am practising bushcraft, the multitool is a secondary tool beyond my parang, folding saw and fixed blade. As such, the features of the Rebar serve me better for bushcraft than the Signal, which is an excellent emergency kit (one) tool due to its features. In typical Bushcraft outings, I will never use the Signal ferro rod or whistle as I already carry them with redundancies. The compact nature lends itself better in my survival pouch. The internal tools provide a sightly higher protection against grim and dirt. I tend to agree about the Signal being more of an emergency tool. I usually use a Leatherman Surge in a pack if I’m in the outdoors. The only issue is weight. For some people it’s much too heavy. Lately however, I’ve been carry a Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X. For outdoors it works for me since I’ll have another knife anyway.
for me its perfect for bushcraft. imagine your pack got lost.. a lot of the tools you need are on the signal and you’ll survive longer with the signal than any other multitool. only thing i dont like is it doesnt have scissors (i know its not essential for buschcraft) so i use a swisscard . but it will always come down to personal prefference of course. :)
A very nitty-gritty reason why the Signal's not the best for bushcraft is that the straight edge of the blade is so short. To take an example I ran into, I was hiking in a wet environment and wanted to make shavings from the inside of some wood to get dry tinder to get a fire going. I was definitely able to use the Signal to do so, but the short straight edge made it more tedious than it would have been if I had a full-tang blade with me. Definitely doable - so for survival, no gripes - but if you're looking to process quickly, a larger straight-edged blade would be my preference.
I completely agree. I had been considering different models of leathermans , you may have sold me on the Rebar. I’m also considering the curve. I really like the idea of the Diamond file, but don’t want to pay the price for the other models that have it. I’m considering trying to modify one by replacing the knife blade with the woodsaw ( I’m not sure its a straight swap yet). I carry enough knives that I wouldn’t miss the knife blade on the curve.
I've owned alot of leathermans but just can't bring myself to buy the signal my reasons are the half serrated blade, the weight,removeable plastic parts, gimmicks like the hammer and tiny ferro rod and hammer and ergonomics and considering those flaws i also have to add the price to my list of reasons
It is not supposed to be a bushcraft tool. You are trying to stuff it into a role it wasn't designed for. It is for someone proficient in bushcraft that wants a multi-tool that could save their ass if caught without their kit. ie tipping a canoe and swimming to shore. Why do so few understand this!?
Thanks for your thoughts. It is definitely reasonable infer it can be used for bushcraft purposes based on the marketing copy of Leatherman's own product page, as well as for camping and any outdoor adventure activities.
Thanks for the comment. Going by Leatherman's own product description, it is "designed for the outdoors" and "A perfect fit for any adventure....". So Bushcraft would fall under that, and many consumers do use it for bushcraft and camping too.
I fully agree, I do not see it as functional in practice for outdoor activities. My vision is as follows, leatherman clamp and victorinox knife, together they work wonders outdoors, where rebar or supertool are my favorites in leatherman and Outrider in Victorinox always talking about rural areas. To be honest I also like to wear a swiss champ (it brings a wide variety of uses), and I like knives like "JOKER TS1" or CUDEMAN MINI BOINA VERDE"
Not sure what you mean by urban survival. Do you mean an EDC tool for the everyday things that require a tool? If you mean a tool for an urban SHTF scenario a multitool is down on the list after pepper spray and a Glock.

Really out of the two I see the rebar being more useful. Personally I would rather have a set of plyers and a knife with a file, awl, saw, can opener. Mainly because the knife tools come with better knives. I have a small screwdriver that holds its own bits and that plyers are easier to pack. There is a new company that makes a amazing knife tool set Roxon ks elite d2 or even the gerber pry bar. I prefer a knipex plyer or Wiha . Wiha makes the best bits I’ve ever used. I’m a mechanic so tools are something I made my life with. Going into the woods I’m not gonna start scrimping then. I’ve had leatherman since the 1980s. They either get lost or the tools fail. I know they claim a warranty. I’ve never used it . But back then they weren’t as expensive. My most favorite was the leatherman that had vise grips. I found many uses for that but it disappeared. I no longer wanna spend that kind of money on something I can get for $30. The new companies are more that enough. All my bags have knives and plyers.
Have you tried the Leathermean Free P4? It's my favorite multitool for multiple reasons: - As tough as the wave (pliers are actually beefier). - True one hand opening, which feels like a balisong. I thikn this alone already put's it at the top in emergency situations, where you may have a compromised hand. - Good combination of tools: plain edge blade, serrated blade with chisel in tip, wood saw, small file, screwdrivers are fixed. I also have the Wave+, and I think that's better for a home-use multitool, given the replaceable bit drivers. But in bushcraft or survival situations, I think the Free P4 is the best multitool. Now, Imagine if we could get Magnacut steel blades on our Leathermans. A man can dream...
No I have no experience with it or handled. But I am intrigued and looked in up. I agree that it seems the best of all combinations. So the only compromise is weight. I will get one in the near future. Thanks!
One handed opening is fine and all(almost like a fidget spinner), but I can open ANY multitool with 1 hand and so can anyone older than 5. If I’m 1 handed I’d rather have spring loaded pliers. I also love having the carabiner, tool lock so it doesn’t just pop open, and the bit driver
Victorinox saw is better I will not argue that save you the time iv tested them multiple times on different woods and different models voctorinox saw just runs better.

It’s nice kit, just a bit overpriced. Definitely not worth more than $99.99 to $109.99 USD tops. Leatherman has gone and lost the plot with their pricing structure.

Far as for bushcrafting, I think Signal is better than Rebar as the tools on the Signal lock and have a hammer.

@@FactFinderGeneral mine hangs from a D-ring on my belt, doesn't do any good if it's in your main pack and a mile away at camp.

I still wouldn’t have a firesteel (none of those is one), I still wouldn’t have an ability to sharpen my multitool (none of those is a sharpening stone), and the fact that the rebar is “smaller and slimmer” is irrelevant because you’re bringing bigger, heavier, larger eqpt to add to the tool…
YOU are the one that indicated “smaller, lighter and more compact” matters, and then you destroyed that argument with all the extra kit you’re bringing….
There is NO extra protection provided internal tools from grime or dirt… That’s just nonsense… Who are you kidding here? Do you really think I don’t have decades of using tools/multi tools to draw from?

Please show you building a fire with a rebar and nothing additional. Please show you sharpening the rebar blade with only the file in the rebar… Show me that your opinion has more substantive argument than the facts do. I’ll wait. @EverettVinzant I have already stressed that I don't see the Rebar as a survival one-tool option so I am not sure why you are being so agreesive and defensive. No one has suggested you don't have decades of experience using tools. You sound like someone who knows what works for them but also wants to ensure everyone agrees with you. think it is pointless continuing this conversation. I tend to agree about the Signal being more of an emergency tool. I usually use a Leatherman Surge in a pack if I’m in the outdoors. The only issue is weight. For some people it’s much too heavy. Lately however, I’ve been carry a Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X. For outdoors it works for me since I’ll have another knife anyway.

for me its perfect for bushcraft. imagine your pack got lost.. a lot of the tools you need are on the signal and you’ll survive longer with the signal than any other multitool. only thing i dont like is it doesnt have scissors (i know its not essential for buschcraft) so i use a swisscard . but it will always come down to personal prefference of course. :)

A very nitty-gritty reason why the Signal's not the best for bushcraft is that the straight edge of the blade is so short. To take an example I ran into, I was hiking in a wet environment and wanted to make shavings from the inside of some wood to get dry tinder to get a fire going. I was definitely able to use the Signal to do so, but the short straight edge made it more tedious than it would have been if I had a full-tang blade with me. Definitely doable - so for survival, no gripes - but if you're looking to process quickly, a larger straight-edged blade would be my preference.

I completely agree. I had been considering different models of leathermans , you may have sold me on the Rebar.
I’m also considering the curve. I really like the idea of the Diamond file, but don’t want to pay the price for the other models that have it.
I’m considering trying to modify one by replacing the knife blade with the woodsaw ( I’m not sure its a straight swap yet). I carry enough knives that I wouldn’t miss the knife blade on the curve.

I've owned alot of leathermans but just can't bring myself to buy the signal my reasons are the half serrated blade, the weight,removeable plastic parts, gimmicks like the hammer and tiny ferro rod and hammer and ergonomics and considering those flaws i also have to add the price to my list of reasons

It is not supposed to be a bushcraft tool. You are trying to stuff it into a role it wasn't designed for.
It is for someone proficient in bushcraft that wants a multi-tool that could save their ass if caught without their kit. ie tipping a canoe and swimming to shore.

Thanks for your thoughts. It is definitely reasonable infer it can be used for bushcraft purposes based on the marketing copy of Leatherman's own product page, as well as for camping and any outdoor adventure activities.
Love my Leatherman Signal. It's not a bushcraft item but more like a tool to have just in case SHITF. I carry mine daily.

Thanks for the comment. Going by Leatherman's own product description, it is "designed for the outdoors" and "A perfect fit for any adventure....". So Bushcraft would fall under that, and many consumers do use it for bushcraft and camping too.

dude just take off the fero rod, I wouldn't keep the fero rod on it if I'm just carrying it around town

I fully agree, I do not see it as functional in practice for outdoor activities. My vision is as follows, leatherman clamp and victorinox knife, together they work wonders outdoors, where rebar or supertool are my favorites in leatherman and Outrider in Victorinox always talking about rural areas. To be honest I also like to wear a swiss champ (it brings a wide variety of uses), and I like knives like "JOKER TS1" or CUDEMAN MINI BOINA VERDE"

Not sure what you mean by urban survival. Do you mean an EDC tool for the everyday things that require a tool? If you mean a tool for an urban SHTF scenario a multitool is down on the list after pepper spray and a Glock.
@johnshepherd9676 it means whatever is applicable to one in an urban environment in their geographical location. We would not have pepper spray or a Glock here since it is comparatively safe and also not legal to own and use. Thanks!
@urbanknifeguy I appreciate that. I currently carry a SOG PowerPint for the first meaning. We have had black bears in town where I live so both bear spray and a G20 are a useful thing to have.

Really out of the two I see the rebar being more useful. Personally I would rather have a set of plyers and a knife with a file, awl, saw, can opener. Mainly because the knife tools come with better knives. I have a small screwdriver that holds its own bits and that plyers are easier to pack. There is a new company that makes a amazing knife tool set Roxon ks elite d2 or even the gerber pry bar.
I prefer a knipex plyer or Wiha . Wiha makes the best bits I’ve ever used. I’m a mechanic so tools are something I made my life with. Going into the woods I’m not gonna start scrimping then. I’ve had leatherman since the 1980s. They either get lost or the tools fail. I know they claim a warranty. I’ve never used it . But back then they weren’t as expensive. My most favorite was the leatherman that had vise grips. I found many uses for that but it disappeared. I no longer wanna spend that kind of money on something I can get for $30. The new companies are more that enough. All my bags have knives and plyers.

I didn’t read all of the comments, but you’re missing the bit driver slot on the signal that isn’t in the rebar.
Yes I think I mentioned it. I don't really like the driver for Bushcraft as I prefer the fixed tools of the Rebar so I don't lose any bits outfield.
Have you tried the Leathermean Free P4? It's my favorite multitool for multiple reasons:
- As tough as the wave (pliers are actually beefier).
- True one hand opening, which feels like a balisong. I thikn this alone already put's it at the top in emergency situations, where you may have a compromised hand.
- Good combination of tools: plain edge blade, serrated blade with chisel in tip, wood saw, small file, screwdrivers are fixed.
I also have the Wave+, and I think that's better for a home-use multitool, given the replaceable bit drivers. But in bushcraft or survival situations, I think the Free P4 is the best multitool.
Now, Imagine if we could get Magnacut steel blades on our Leathermans. A man can dream...
No I have no experience with it or handled. But I am intrigued and looked in up. I agree that it seems the best of all combinations. So the only compromise is weight. I will get one in the near future. Thanks!
One handed opening is fine and all(almost like a fidget spinner), but I can open ANY multitool with 1 hand and so can anyone older than 5.
If I’m 1 handed I’d rather have spring loaded pliers. I also love having the carabiner, tool lock so it doesn’t just pop open, and the bit driver
Victorinox saw is better I will not argue that save you the time iv tested them multiple times on different woods and different models voctorinox saw just runs better.
Thanks for your comment. I do believe that the Victorinox saw is generally superior. However, I was surprised when I did a field test comparison with the Rebar and it outperformed the Victorinox 111mm Saw.

Agreed. The price does sting but it is a great tool.
