Hi there and thanks for picking one of my videos! This is however perhaps the oddest choice to get to know Pain of Salvation’s music and I’d recommend to check songs like WAIT for instance, there’s a playthrough out there too. Now for the chorus section that you were wondering, it’s a 5/4 with accents every 5th 16th notes on the bass drum. The entire song is in 5/4 actually, and there’s a whole thing with triplets, quintuplets, sextuplets and 4 against 3’s going on throughout the songs, but it’s fairly subtle and almost hard to perceive :)
Hey Andrew, love the channel! Finally one I can help on: the section at 03:10 is ten bars of 4/4, but with a strong 5 against 4 modulation. The crash is keeping 4/4 quarter notes while the kick, snare and vocal heavily emphasise every fifth 16th note. You can hear the high piano part that comes in during the second half (03:22) emphasising this 5/16ths cycle. Pain Of Salvation play with 5s and 7s in a 16th note 4/4 context quite a lot. Check out On A Tuesday, the opening track from the album In The Passing Light Of Day, for a cool example using 7s. Keep up the great work and cheers from London!
I've seen it transcribed as the opposite: 5/4 but with four cycles of 5 16th notes... so I guess that would be a 4 against 5? Otherwise, you're having to do a tempo modulation for it to be in 4/4. But yeah, Daniel Gildenlow likes to compose these pieces with what he likes to call "three-dimensional rhythms" all the time. It's one of their defining features, if you ask me. Another great example would be "Handful of Nothing" with what I like to call the "reducing" rhythm... it's... intricate! :P
@@lauscho Yeah, that's a very good point! With your perspective and another listen, I would add to my previous comment that if we assume counting quarter notes at 130bpm all the way through probably makes the most sense (totally agree with you there!), it's a 5/16ths ostinato within 5/4. I still feel it as 5 against 4 though, because the 5/16s are happening against a really strong quarter note pulse. It would have the same effect in 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 7/4...whatever, because that quarter note feels really grounded and the 16th notes are going by pretty quickly. Very cool effect regardless of what the mathematics say :-)
PAIN OF SALVATION is one of the most genious prog formations! No Record can compare to each other, its Just ICONIC! This song is one of that anthem for the fans, but they have more options to admire the craft of margarit. Even "restless boy" ia better...
I found his double pedal patterns a refreshing change from the barrage of continuous bass drum rolls so often heard. To me it had the same effect as ghost notes on the snare in propelling the groove. It wasn't in your face, which may be why some people aren't keen on it. But I found it to be a very musical way of playing. And the polyrhythmic sections are just long enough to create tension and end up with a satisfying release on the return to the original groove. It's also interesting how he achieves a heavier feel by subtracting notes on the bass drum, reducing it to the basic rhythm. Usually one associates intensity with denser playing but here he shows how the reverse can achieve the same effect. A real drum lesson for me. Thanks Andrew.
Leo is fucking great. I'm lucky enough to have seen them live three times so far and he's phenomenal. Pain of Salvation really like their syncopated and odd drums. I've listened to their song Rope Ends maybe a few hundred times by now and I still can't pinpoint what the hell is going on with the drums during the intro riff.
Pain of Salvation is my absolute favorite band. Leo is a wonderful drummer. I would not have picked this song. I would have picked one of Leo’s original compositions like Restless Boy or Reasons. 🤷🏼♂️
The "Live that you might find the answers..." section is in 5/4. But the vocal and musical accents happen every 5 16th notes. So the ride is keeping the beat every 4 eighth notes 5 times, and the vocals are every 5 eights notes 4 times, and it syncopates on top of each other.
ACCELERATOR off their new record is also a bear as far as "wait, where's the 1" (and it's probably like several of their songs in the answer depends on what instrument you're asking). Of course if you want some really outside polymeter/rhythms, check out Panzerballet's cover of "take five"
Leo is very underrated, and Pain of Salvation is one of the best progmetal bands in the world. But i more prefer his work on The passing light of a day album, he deserved mention in a top list of modern drummers for this
Exceptional band and a phenomenal drummer, but Fandango is perhaps a bit weird as a starting point, even though the Remedy Lane album is fantastic as a whole. You should really check out his playthrough of WAIT and ACCELERATOR from their latest album PANTHER. Realy enjoying the channel! Keep up the good work!!!
Yeah a few of these picks are literally the opposite of what you’d want to start him on. Bobby Jarzombek’s song selection was another. Then again, I’m not doing any patreons right now so I guess I can’t complain too much. 🤣
i always thought Remedy Lane was their absolute high point and nothing else of them could even compare to it. maybe because it seemed to be a very personal record. Those usually are the best. haven't been following them for the past couple of years, the band seemed to hire and fire a lot of members
@@hazardeur I actually prefer The Perfect Element. So many great albums, and even Scarsick has grown on me over the years. Also hearing them play The Passing Light of Day live and meeting the band after the show in NYC is one of my cherished musical memories.
@@steve.hoffman Also my favorite band. And one of my favorite memories was finally seeing them live, and I had a VIP pass for a meet and greet. But it was a rough show. One of the openers had a bunch of technical difficulties, and Daniel was performing while sick, and wouldn't be at the meet and greet. The show ran long, and the venue cut the power to their amps. But Daniel, even while sick, stayed on stage to finish the encore without amps. He just turned himself up to 11 and finished the show.
Don't think you've done Mark Zonder. I don't know how much live material there is on youtube, but he had a very singular style in his days with prob band Fates Warning. Traditional grip, intricate parts with his cymbals.
I love Mark Zonder. I'd say he's another underrated drummer, but people who know his music generally appreciate it. So... maybe not underrated, but underappreciated. Even Fates Warning is underappreciated, I think.
Someone please request that he review Leo Margarit doing "Handful of Nothing." I love Fandango. It's an amazing song. But from the perspective of drumming, it's a bit of a snooze. Leo's new video jamming to Handful of Nothing is perfection. And if that isn't good enough, he also has "On a Tuesday" out. ...I'd request them, but I'm a poor schlub.
My all time favorite band. each (concept) album takes you on a completely different journey. From multi-layered distortion-heavy technical tracks to stripped down 70's style bluesy rock, to fully orchestrated rock opera, to experimental industrial-infused electronic effects - These guys do it all. And unlike some bands, the extreme technical prowess always takes a back seat to the melody and the amazing lyrics (Daniel Gildenlow is probably the best song lyrics writer alive today in any genre, I mean it). This specific song choice is unfortunate in my taste, one of the weirder experimental tracks in my opinion. You should check out the new fantastic WAIT from the PANTHER album, also available in this playthrough format - a perfect blend of heart-scathing ballade and quiet technical mastery. ua-cam.com/video/zDzrglYYVvM/v-deo.html
Well, the people have already said it but I'm saying ut again. Pain if salvation is one if the absolutely best progmetalbands ever. Not a good song to start whit but anywho. I love remedy Lane and the perfect element pt 1, these are two good albums to start whit Keep up the entertaining work 🤘💪 Ps. Loved your reaction on jinjer 😁
Im a non drummer too.. I started with drums a long time ago but I picked up a guitar and switched. I'd love to play drums again tho Im obsessed with watching all these guys play. There's just something about the drums. They're so complex and mesmerizing.
I personally preferred Johan. The singer Daniel Gildenlow writes most of the music and parts. Do Nightmist from their live dvd, such a great drum part and Johan kills it! I've seen them and met them 3 times with the main lineup on their first albums. Saw them once with Leo. I personally thought they were better with Johan on drums and Daniel's brother Kristoffer on bass. I was glad Johan came back on guitars.
Definitely some interesting drumming. It had some pretty neat phrasings. Cant really say I'm a fan of the actual sound. The snare was kinda loud and the rest of the kit just sounds kinda flat. Even the ride was just kinda, there. Still neat.
I can categorically state that I’m not down with this style. I’m also bemused at why he’d bother reversing his left stick when he’s not hitting the snare with any power. Each to their own.

What a boss! Thank you for the countless hours of soul-quenching music you helped create!
I too had just suggested WAIT, what a masterpiece :-)
@@Mrdardas99 🙏😊
You make this crazy song look so easy to play, Léo!
Almost like you could do it in your sleep!
Can't wait to see you perform live again :)
you’re definitely the most amazing POS has has. so relaxed playing these songs. one of my inspirations right now for sure.

i guess Im quite randomly asking but do anyone know a good site to watch new movies online ?
@Khalil Diego Flixportal :)
@Kenzo Tristen thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it !!
Leo is a very underrated drummer, the original drummer was awesome too (and from what we see it is a tough band too be in).
Such an odd choice of theirs to start him with- hahaha. I hope eventually he gets a more Leo track (like off one of the last two albums).
Good to finally get some Pain of Salvation on the channel, fantastic group!
How just love how it sounds complex and natural at the same time... POS are fantastic...

Woa didn't expect you to react to POS. These guys are obsessed with polymetres.

My favourite video of Leo's is his solo song called "Atlantis". Incredible drumming on that one
Love Leo and Pain of Salvation! ❤️

Pain of Salvation (1996 - 2004)
Best prog. metal band in the universe.

Honnestly, I was not that into it the first 1min or two but after a while I kinda dig it...
EXCELLENT!

Mesmerizing!
I wonder if I'm one of the few non-drummers sub'd to your channel, Andy. I love it.

No there's plenty of non drummers here Michael!
Drums is such a fun instrument to watch. Very physical
Awesome Tyler. I'm sure you will get back to drums. The guitaring will help how you think about music/drums!
Reminds me of something Forgotten Silence would put out 🤘 sick stuff
It's good to see that Liam Neeson grew out his hair and found his peace in another art form than acting
Try "Used" as a first up song for this band.
Very different, very cool
that quote about china just laughed mao :D
HAHA!
this song is something beyond progressive rock ... i haven't found any good name for it ... but it's more

Mike Patton rules👿👍
Yup he's a boss!
Nice!
Раскоординация по полной)) аритмия в чистом виде
More PoS, pleeease!
Think playing this is tough you should try dancing to it...haha
Everything seems to be anchored by the quarter notes on the cymbals. Very relaxed and odd.
Definitely some interesting drumming. It had some pretty neat phrasings. Cant really say I'm a fan of the actual sound. The snare was kinda loud and the rest of the kit just sounds kinda flat. Even the ride was just kinda, there. Still neat.
On genre: anything this weird *has* to be some sort of prog
This band must have been signed by Serj Tankian.
Right on Brian!
I can categorically state that I’m not down with this style. I’m also bemused at why he’d bother reversing his left stick when he’s not hitting the snare with any power. Each to their own.
Well that was weird music
Yeah welcome to pain of salvation. Some of their stuff doesn't hit the mark, but when it does it is very good
Increeeeedible song from an incredible band, but this isn't a great drumming song to digest. Fairly basic, albeit fun to play.
your right, what is this
The choice in drumming was very strange with the music.
