- Arthur Fraser is in the headlines a lot these days - for two reasons specifically - he’s the former spy boss who granted former President Jacob Zuma his medical parole, and also the man who laid charges against Cyril Ramaphosa over the February 2020 Phala Phala theft saga. The fifth instalment of the Zondo Report makes damning findings against Fraser and a dubious cast of characters in the intelligence world. Michael Appel takes a look at the man instrumental in shaping South Africa from the shadows.
The hate I have for the ANC can only be matched by the love I have for oxygen.

Michael, I knew Arthur from my early days in WP athletics and administration. If you gave me odds of $1B to $1 that the bumbling fool would amount to anything but a bum I would have put the $1 safely back in my pocket. They grew up in a middle class suburb of Glenhaven, a somewhat classier Cape Flats suburb of 'coloured' small business people through to teachers etc of which his dad was one.
They were 'political' in a quiet , hush hush way as we crammed into a bedroom to hold some of our earlier club (Titans AAC) meetings for a very short while, the Mum always in the kitchen, Dad extremely quiet, the stuttering younger brother Barry quite good at school, but Arthur had left school and was somewhat of a drifter who couldn't put two sentences together. I , and others, regarded him as a 'bit slow'. [As an aside, prior to this, I recall his dad had been reported in The Argus, for a fire started on the slopes of Devils Peak that went out of control. I haven't been able to track that article, perhaps you have the means.]
We moved our meetings out of their home. but at every occasion where we organised club time trials, fun runs etc, Arthur was one of the most hopeless at organising, or even taking instructions. My $1 would have really looked very safe at that time. He had no job, and was in and out of college/tech courses, and spent a lot of time a couple of streets away at his girlfriend, Natasha's home. He occasionally rocked up to a 5km time trial (my little black book of Cape Times results still have those recordings) and last noted presence was on 3rd April '84 and Barry 17th July 84. Geraldine had disappeared to Lesotho by then, and a few years later ('87) when I visited the UWS library I bumped into Barry who informed me he was 'doing Law', but was evasive about Arthur's whereabouts and what he was doing with his life.

Thank you for this incredible personal insight Colin. It's vital to trying to piece the man together as there's honestly very little known about him besides a few stand-out dodgy happenings.

...and genuinely, every time I see him, the power he holds, and the positions he has held, I scratch my head thinking how it can be the same person, but alas, it is not a dream. I mean the title 'spy chief' is so crazy I pinch myself that it I'm not dreaming. How ...is ...it ...possible?
But this is an example of exactly what has contributed to SA's demise over the last 30 yrs, a bunch of nincompoops like Fraser, useful idiots in the true sense of the words, that have been foisted on society to enable politicians and fatten their pockets at the same time. I was a SACOS affiliated worker in the athletics scene, but never trusted the ANC , left in 1990, and they proved me right. The whole lot of them should be tried for treason.
@@colinj5099 ,you have to admit he was a superb 800 and 1500 middle distance runner but a complete non entity at school with one classmate not remebering who he was.Dont know if he finoished matric.
Also mention that Ramaphosa (BizNews's favorite😄) put Fraser in charge of correctional services knowing his past.
I dislike all politicians equally Siya. CR is no favourite of mine.

Arthur Frazer may not be a nun but if it was not for him we would never have kown about Ramaphosa's shady Phala Phala deal, even if Ramaphosa is the cleanest shirt in the dirty laundry basket that is not good enough there are better candidates out there. The fact is Ramaphosa did not declare the funds in his couch to SARS or customs and did not pay the taxes on these monies, which is a crime. SARS is putting out messages that they are going after tax payers that don't pay their taxes. Well, why don't they set an example with the president? Otherwise, they are a joke and have double standards.
He was a student at Livingstone high school(Claremont, western cape ). Roughly the same time as Dr. Iqbal Survé and the Rasool brothers
Fraser knew Zondo was going to recommend the reopen of the treasonous charges dropped by former SS Minister Siyabonga Twele hence he felt threatened and decide to take on CR with evidence that is already questionable and disputed because the amount of money he spoke about can't be confirmed. His days are coming and he saw that already 😂 of course he is not a reliable or credible whittle blower that's a fact at least

For the first time black people were involve in 10% supply of coal to Eskom and we had no load shedding during the last term of JZs term. Is that part of wasted years???
@Nicky Klue yes I did sir, hence my question. That Zondo commission ignored a whole lot of facts that emanated from the enquiry. For example Glencore own by Shanduka charged way more for a tonne of coal more than stipulated by energy regulator. They still got the tender and the question is how? Tageta own by the Guptas only supplied 10% of coal and the other 90% who supplies are they all fully compliant? Or those questions should not be asked?
