This was such a lovely and thoughtful breakdown of what you did and how you planned to do it. I think too often artists throw their hands up and get mad at social media (I have, but there’s ways to make it work) and sometimes we learn it’s not always worth the energy. I think though at the end of this you weren’t just making art for IG, but you did it for you. You made more stuff for your portfolio and honed your skills more 👏
I've been posting on instagram every day for months and my reach is almost zero. Almost nobody sees any of my posts and I really mean just a handful of people. Also, zero engagement, no matter how hard I try to be engaging. And I've been trying to post reels and nothing happens. I've been very discouraged to say the least because I just opened my online shop and I have no customers. So I don't know what is the problem with my posts or with instagram but this is where I'm at. I'm still gonna post every day because I really make art every day.
Unfortunately it just seems like instagram is making it harder and harder to get noticed by smaller artists, so I doubt it's you. Maybe participate in some dtiys or other challenges that are relevant to your art and don't forget to comment on other artists posts to build up a community. You got this!!!
i am vzery sorry its happening to you algorithm and reach and stuff can suck a lot because talented ppl can just not be seen at all from what i seen on your channel your very talented
don’t give up, i like what you draw:) maybe take a step back and rethink your strategy about how/where you put your art out there and what is the outcome you want to get, from whom. usually distancing yourself from what you do to gain objectivity, keeping it simple and looking for ways to change our perception just to experiment how it feels, can bring you the right solutions for what you need when you want different results you need to also do things differently good luck and hope you enjoy the art making process regardless of the struggles🤗
This was really interesting to watch - thank you for putting it all together for us. I started a 365 Illustration project on January 1st and I'm on Day 202 today and honestly, I'm worn out. I realized very quickly that I had to do this for me and not for the Instagram results or I'd go crazy - I have months where the algorithm likes me and I get great results and then the next month my reach sinks like a stone and it's hard not to take it personally. Doing different DTIYS and daily drawing challenges put on by other artists has kept me going and given me inspiration when I was feeling tapped out. I will say this though - one of my most popular posts so far is the DTIYS of yours with the little mouse that I did! Only 163 more days to go 🤣😂
This is so inspirational 🥹❤ I love how everything is broken down and we see each step! It makes it seem so much more feasible and MUCH less daunting. Thank you, thank you!! 🙌🏼💕
These are interesting insights! 👏 Your conclusion following the 30 day challenge is great, posting daily is wholly unsustainable. For me, I asked myself what my focus would be on Instagram. I enjoy engaging with other illustrators asking questions and, if I enjoy a particular work I offer SPECIFIC compliments. I emphasize specific because simple platitudes can ring hollow from time to time which can make engagement feel like a grind. So, to that end I find posting a few times a week is sufficient and for the other days commenting specifics create quality over quantity and form a stronger community with other artists. BTW, I got this idea from an earlier video of yours discussing strategies.😃 As far as growth, I think Pinterest is the better option.🤔 Thanks for all of your hard work!
Mimi this was so interesting to watch!❤️ It can be so disheartening when you put so much energy into posting/creating art for it reach very little engagement😢 but this has helped so much, so thank you!❤ ~ Rachel x
I really love your videos. You are so inspiring and so much of your advice is helping me in my current situation. Just want to let your know you are making the world a better place!
I really want to set myself a similar challenge, mostly to really get back into drawing and especially drawing new things. Things I currently feel are out of my comfort zone. Thanks for this encouraging video
I want to start a new Instagram account for my art and was thinking of "kickstarting" it by posting doodling Reels every day for a month before winding down to a more sustainable posting frequency, but I don't know if the experiment you did would work with a super fresh account or if it would be wiser to wait for a bit. But thank you for doing this challenge and breakdown, it was very insightful!
Hi Mimi, I really enjoy your planning process, the simplicity and efficiency of your questions/ goals/actions. It’s a very good skill to have, both for business and for mental health:))
I love this video and seeing the results of a 30 day challenge. I love reading the comments here too, this community is awesome. I too have difficulty growing my account, most of what I post are mockups of my art and nothing moves even after 30 days, so I dont’ see the results similar to this video. I only have about 700 followers, 500 of those are from my art course. I am curious to know about what it was like at the beginning of trying to grow your account for the first year and how long it took to grow it to where it is today - ie what you did
Seems like a very cool art challenge and congrats for pulling through! But most of all, thank you for the insight into your analytics! I'm sure that will be very helpful to a lot of people ✨ (me included, lol)
this is really interesting! I definitely need to post more on instagram, I pretty much stopped once they only pushed reels and I started doing them instead, I should really get back to it ❤
I loved seeing your plan for the posts. Winging it day by day is bound to be really hard and unsuccessful! It's really interesting and encouraging to see. Thank you:)
I just appreciate you Mimi, for doing so much hardwork just to show artists like us! I definitely used to post daily and had growth, but now I don't seem to have the energy! But looking at this video, I think I might do this on August😌❤ Great editing, graphics and video, as always ❤
Your artwork looks amazing! I really appreciate that you did this experiment and showed us the results and shared your experience. Thank you. ❤ Btw, i noticed you use a 2-in-1 laptop and also an ipad for your digital illustrations. May I ask which one you prefer? Right now, I have an ipad but was considering a 2-in-1 drawing laptop. Anyway, thank you again for always sharing your art journey. Have a lovely day!
Just for this very video it was very well worth it! Thank you so much for sharing this experiment/challenge! It was very insightful. Your art, work flow, and aesthetics are also very inspiring.
Thank you so much for tracking & sharing the time it needed to post 1 illu per day! 💜 Due to a foot injury, I was trying to do a 1 post per day too as of late and even though, I can't do much besides sitting around in my spare time - drawing and trying to posting so much, felt qiet overwhelming to me. I felt like, I was particularly slow and kinda weak 🙈 Hearing from your experience and numbers, helps ☺ I also wanna thank you for inspiring me to adopt another mindset - that it's about the process & enhancing my art skills vs. perfection💜🌸💜 Each time, when I get frustrated or feel decision fatigue while creating, I remind myself of the approach you had when you started! Thank you for teaching me so much :) It's valuable support for me🌸🌸🌸 Sending best wishes!!
Mimi this is so nice❤ i also love the entire edit made in this video. Is this something that you can share in one of your videos? Interested to know the process! Thank you
Thank you for making this video!! Out of curiosity though, did you use hashtags at all when making the posts, or was this an experiment secluded to just posting once a day?

Loved the creative and logical approach to this challenge and yes it was very great to see that even if you have already so many followers it still takes time. Do you have any tips when it comes to the topic or style of art to post? Like i love a lot...digital collage, digital painting, acrylic painting, stickman doodles, etc. but atm I just post randomly cause posting something is better than nothing imho...but yeah do you have that issue as well and if you do, how do you work with it?
hmm interesting outcome 🙂 I've thought about doing a 100 day challenge for practice and posting the result on Instagram, might be worth it since i would be drawing anyway 🙃
I always learn so much from your videos! They’re always so well made, thoughtful and engaging. They have been a super awesome resource for my own art business- so thank you 😊
it actually does.. it may be slow. but yes. it does. and i don't even do it every day. i post my sketchdaily stuff only so far...and it has increased the reach.. also i found that certain type of art will have more reach. for example my hyperrealism has the least number...while my ugly sketches actually have more. dunno why. but it is what it is. and have to thank you all for all the bots that followed me 😂
For someone starting now, is IG really worth it ? Can a new account grow (even quite slowly) without playing the game of constant posting ? I feel like I'll never be able to post daily nor that I would want to. Even by working a lot doing one artwork per week is really hard for me. Nonetheless, thank you for your content, your journey inspires me a lot and helps me fight self doubt. Wish you the best !
I think if you enjoy having somewhere to share the art that you make, then it can be worth it because you can grow a community of art friends. But if you want to grow a social media account without posting very often then perhaps a different platform would be a good fit? You could always try a couple of different platforms and see what feels good for you (Twitter, TikTok, Facebook etc)
I enjoyed your video and took account of what you did, but the only thing I see that can be discouraging to alot of people is that you already have an established account with an huge following. It makes it a whole lot easier for you (no offense)....I honestly do not think this will work for newbies or those trying to revive old accounts :/ Not trying to sound negative but ive seen new people struggle even with posting every day. I know with my situation I am getting viewers but no followers. I am not going to give up because I am doing my art for me and if people want to follow and support I would obviously love that but alot of people want to see growth and start their own art business.
Maybe you have a piece of advice. I would love to post much more often than I currently do but my drawings take around 6-8hrs/piece instead of 1-2 hours. How could I post more often when I can maybe do a full drawing 1x/week. As I have a full time job too, which is not art related. I can't just post wips all throughout the week. But if I post once/twice a week that's definitely not enough for growth.
post progress shots of the work. I do that when I'm working on a bigger one. Sometimes in my feed, sometimes in stories and sometimes as a reel. People like to see the behind the scenes and they're always interested to see how an idea started and what it looked like when it's all done and the phases in between.
Reveal the piece bit by bit. So if it's like a big canvas post that can be four posts. The upper and lower right side one day and the upper and lower left another. This does depend on your subject matter, this would work for florals and pieces with a lot of intricate details.
Thanks so much for this insightful video. I actually wanted to do a similar challenge for this month, however because of having a demanding family and a chronic illness where my energy levels change from day to day, it was not possible for me to be as consistent. Instagram will only help you if you post a lot and post consistantly. So I don't have any hope that I'll grow as fast, but I'm still looking for a strategy that will work for my circumstances. Keep up the good work!
This was really helpful and insightful, so thank you for sharing your 30 day challenge. For me, it feels like for the past year, my Instagram account has gone nowhere. Even participating in Inktober last year barely reached any new people. I did DTIYS challanges every week last year and got likes, but its becoming harder for me to participate in DTIYS challenges AND posting my own art at the same time. I've been thinking of doing a 30 day challenge of some kind, but it has to be something very simple and that I want to do. I know I'm gonna do Inktober again this year and MAYBE I'll do DTIYS challenges again. I just need re-evaluate my strategy and this video inspired me to get started!
