Beth Howland was a true class act. She took all those totally inappropriate question from that nut-case of an interviewer in stride, and answered them honestly, yet never sank to the level that I'm sure the interviewer wanted her to. An incredibly talented actress and a lovely human being. much missed. Rest in peace to rise in glory, Beth Howland.
I watched Alice because of Beth. I always thought she was so pretty, and such a gentle character. A great interview, and it shows how wonderful she was. God bless for bringing this gem 💎 to us.
I bought the first two seasons on dvd. Wasnt born til 1980 so didnt watch it new. Love the show. A shame Beth was a very beautiful woman but cigarettes killed her . Wish there was more on Vic Tyback but not a lot. All that is left is Alice and Flo. Do you belive Linda was jealous of Polly since Flo‘s character was more popular than Alice
If your referring to eliminating cable tv? Your not missing much. Maybe tv land or 2-3 other channels that aren't bullshit. Good for you. Cable is extremely overpriced and overrated.
What a strange interview. She spent the first two minutes praising her former co-star and asking about her, then grilling her about her personal life. Beth Howland really was gracious throughout the whole thing. She was a terrific actress.
Hey ya know I'd agree Beth is a very pretty but also underrated celebrity and so was Joyce dewitt from Three's company and may they both lived on Happy trails and so do Alice and Polli
I say Vera's character was the most interesting - I feel because you needed to go deeper to "get" her. Not just an on-the-surface type of person regarding looks or blatant sex appeal or talent; she was uncanny in her observations. I liked her writing numbers in the air when she did math :) And she wasn't stupid- I'd say "dumb as a fox." Flo was a riot, no doubt, but Vera had her own dimension as a character. Would have been a much more creative and unusual series if Vera had a spin off. Vera interacting with all type of people and situations/issues and offering her own perspectives. Better than the sort of bland/silly story lines many of the early 80s sitcoms had.
She played that role so well. Vic's nickname for her was Bones, and he actually called her that on the last episode. I found this show on Antenna tv and I love it. Also a lot of those questions this interviewer was asking was out of order.
Wow, the questions that the interviewer was asking are kind of personal and a little invasive; I mean, she even asked if Michael J. Pollard was paying child support and alimony! That question must have been so unsettling for Beth Howland.
Alfred Bloomingdale well in the interviewers defense back then journalist were actually journalists today you have Talking Heads that just read script from the network bosses also back then it was like kind of like everyone wanted to dig deep into the subject life and now everything is sugar-coated crap
@@oiyabastard7275 ... Very true, every interviewer nowadays has a political agenda.... Today, this interview would be all about who she voted for and how she feels about a particular social cause.
It's different because interviewing an actress or celebrity back then wasn't the a$$ kissing session it is today. "Your hair looks fabulous. Who are you wearing?" Also the actress doesn't launch into her soap box issues just because she has the forum. None of that nonsense. Good for this interviewer.

I just saw Michael in an old Andy Griffith show and looked him up. Of course, I knew he was in Bonnie and Clyde. I saw he was married to Beth from 61-69, but I didn’t know who she was until I saw she was in “Alice” and other shows I used to watch. RIP, Beth..
The "Flo" episodes are streaming and there are a few on UA-cam!!! I liked "Flo"! Even though it's VERY honky-tonk, it just proves how good Polly Holliday was, she made that show good. I heard that Linda Lavin didn't like that Polly Holliday got so many jokes on "Alice," and wanted her off the show. Diane Ladd was getting a lot of attention, too, and it just so happens she disappeared after a short time. And then the final waitress ended up being very hum-drum.... I don't think that's a coincidence!
What a disappointment. But Ms. Howland tolerated this dreadful interviewer and her awful questions with such grace. I'm an even bigger fan than before.
I never knew Beth had a child. The interviewer was a bit too nosy. I would have told her to mind her own business. I loved the show Alice and I think we all loved Vera! The original cast was the greatest.
I’d prefer someone asking me about what I should be getting, alimony, instead of being fake and asking who I was wearing. This was the 70’s, not 2020. Wendy Williams is far worse.
Beth should have told the interviewer what she already knew. It was Linda Lavin that sent Flo packing. See the character Flo was getting all the raves not the Alice character. Lavin didn't get along with Diane Ladd either. To me Polly Holiday was the show her and Mel. It should have been called ''MEL'S DINER''. Lavin reminded me of a ''want to be'' Judy Garland with Vegas throat.

sure, heard lot of sources say 'Alice' was Lavin's show, but, in any event I think people will always remember fondly the other characters on the show over Lavin's- -
I believe they got it from the network's wardrobe department..... It was the nightgown previously worn by Caroline 'Ma' Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie....
She was married twice. First to actor Michael J. Pollard and the second to actor Charles Kimbrough. The first ended in divorce and the second lasted until Beth's passing.
Sweet woman. I couldn't stand her character "Vera" on Alice though. Her character made this sitcom unwatchable for me. I have to agree and I am a huge Alice fan. Stuff like "Leaping Lollipops!" is just dumb. Not clever. Not funny. Just stupid. Also the constant crying and freaking out. I know the original Vera in the movie did that but for the next 9 years too...got old.
Oh, bull. Beth Howland as vera sure as hell delivered her share of funny lines throughout the series' run. Case in point: Alice, vera, flo, mel and marie (mel's on and off again girlfriend) are trapped in a mountain cabin with a tornado heading straight towards them. Anyway, they all seek refuge in a bathtub that's been turned upside down and has been being used as a supper table. While they're all huddled together inside the tub, vera mentions to everyone how it reminds her of when she was a little girl and she'd take bubble baths with her cousin melanie. Alice trying to be pleasant during a tense situation replies "that's sweet, vera." Then, here it comes, vera says "Actually it was weird. Melanie was 38." The audience ROARED with laughter. Vera was sweet, ditzy and on many, many occasions, very amusing as well.

Verrrrry underrated.....she's a natural
Only underrated if you weren’t aware of her stage career.
I never realized how beautiful Beth Howland was out of her character's drab waitress uniform.

Now that I cut the cord, I'm glad I found Antenna TV that airs the reruns of Alice. Good memories watching it now, and a kid in the late 70's.

died of cancer. weird thing is her family didn't advise the public she died until five months later!
I recall reading that her husband stated it was her wish not to have her death disclosed until six months after her passing.
