- Short line industrial branch line using a red caboose complete with cupola! Indiana & Ohio Railway switching customers in Mason, Ohio using a caboose for a unique exempt railroad crossing. The unusual railroad crossing is explained in my previous video and This Is The Rest Of The Story! • Strangest Railroad Cro... First I catch the train heading towards a few customers at the end of the branch that needed switched. The caboose was cut off after the last crossing while the crew did the switching. When the train returned, the caboose was leading until they got to a siding in downtown Mason, Ohio. Here we see the caboose set off on the siding and the locomotive runs around the train to continue with the locomotive leading. This run was the last revenue freight run for the caboose. It was shipped to Lebanon, Ohio for its new private owner. I will update this video with info on the future use of the caboose when I learn it. The branch line in this video use to continue on into Cincinnati but years ago a few miles were removed and it is now 2 separate branches owned by I&O. In the 90s there was an effort to reinstall the track. I went to the public hearings and the public outrage was over whelming. In the end the railroad lost and the tracks will never be reinstalled. Homeowners complained that their new homes were built next to an unknown right of way and school buses would be in danger at the numerous crossings. Also, check out how old some of the sections of rail are. It is lighter stick rail dated 1898 in some areas! See the close ups in the video. Trains use 161.385 and sometimes 161.220 and 161.430. The caboose is on a spur in Lebanon decorated for the North Pole Express. That’s where we think Santa hangs out when the trains are running.

That was too cool, just like the old days when they used cabooses on a regular basis. Shine up those rails son !!
Love these shorelines and the caboose was an added bonus! How could any rail fan give this a thumbs down?? Great job Jawtooth!
They must be trolls and not rail fans!
Fuck the haters!
The conductor seems to really enjoy his job. Just his voice, and the spring in his step.
Man, I could watch your videos all day, and sometimes I do. Never thought I was so fascinated by trains. I can understand your passion.
That's an old rail! What a bit of history!
121 year old rails in service! Nothing like American made steel.
Ex-Pennsylvania Railroad line that ran through Blue Ash and on out to Mason. The biggest mistake ever made was removing the track from Brecon in Symmes Township out to the South side of Mason. That 4 mile section being removed causes a ton of extra miles for the I&O since they have to go to almost Middletown to get on the other end of the line and backtrack back to Mason. Last time I was able to catch a train on this line was about 2 years ago and they were using the genset locomotive. My grandparents lived in Mason back in the day when this line was still very busy until Penn Central went belly up in 1974. Used to see long freight trains on it all the time when I was a kid.
Your videos are so REAL. I feel like I'm right next to the trains. The engine, 5014, looks like it just rolled off the assembly line--or like a model right out of the box!! Thank you for making and sharing these videos. U R D Man!!!!
I've never seen a Yield sign mean so much
You really know how to pick em' Jaw Tooth, those rails haven't been used in years and it looks like you caught the first use of that track, with a little red caboose. You can't beat that.
Yep I don't live far from the Snider Road Crossing they get a train through there every Monday and Tuesday
J.T., I really appreciate your willingness to share the passion you have for railroading. We hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Thank you!
Those tracks might be old but they sure look a hell of a lot better than some of the newer trucks that have deferred maintenance on them that I've seen....Love Cabooses......Miss Cabooses. ......
Great Videos as always Jaw Tooth
You got that right!
This is just great, exempt short line trains are fun to watch, thanks jaw tooth 👍
I love the red caboose.
This is a sad ending for "The Little Red Caboose". But wait, there's more! Thank you, Jaw Tooth.
21st century. Railroads got rid of the caboose but you still have to jump off &throw switches.
@@williamschlenger1518 , Cabooses were replaced by a F.R.E.D. (Flashing Rear End Device) It denotes the end of the train and is cheaper than a caboose.
Very well done and interesting video, Brian!
I got to see the Big Boy in person just this past month. I have videos of it but I have no computer right now. As soon as I can get my laptop fixed, I will upload them.
🤔 Thanks for showing us the Carnegie 1898 rolled rail parallel with Snider Road, City of Mason, Ohio, great spotting with that Caboose & train.
Thanks Jaw Tooth.
Listen in on 161.430. ( Tylersville Rd, Mason, Ohio )
Great video! Very, VERY rare to see a caboose on a freighter anymore. I worked for a company that shuttled engineers and conductors around for CP, UP, and some other brands a couple years back and only once saw a caboose at the end of a freighter. And it was only there because it was being moved to a museum after refurb. I miss that job. Hours on the road chasing trains, in back area crossings watching those guys work, and getting to know those men who rustle the heavy iron as they move product across the continent. I'd be working right along side them if I wasn't so over the hill and worn out. It always impressed me as a very satisfying line of work.
JT, you are without a doubt the luckiest guy at seeing trains that I know of. It's a good thing too as I really enjoy your videos son.
I had a golden chance a week ago to finally film a train. I was 20 feet away from it and my camera malfunctioned.
That's the kind of luck I have.
Wow Carnegie Steel. One of the precursors of US Steel.
Thanks for posting. I live in Cincinnati so I went to see this one in person. Very cool. Did not catch a train but maybe next time.
This was pretty neat. Old tracks and rail lines are super interesting to me!
Awesome video J.T.,Kitty is getting big,Sure enjoy seeing the caboose on the local, brings bk.memories of Conrail near my home doing switching work they always had a flat roof caboose..Safe travels safe day!!!!!
That is so cool. If you don’t have a backup camera in the cab. You got eyes on the caboose. Track switch business is so cool. I don’t see many cab forward locomotives. Nice catch.
Jawtooth....
You ever get up to Michigan look me up. I'm one of the older crew members from the 1225 Polar Express. I'll show you some good places up here for railfaning
Love That DT& I Caboose Sure Do Miss that Rail Road
Very nice my friend ! That's one the most interesting and best videos I think you've done so far! 👍👍👍👍
You are grat JAW thank lovely videos from Australia,!!!
This was awesome. 1898. Live action! 🤜🤛🤘
Wow! Haven't seen a caboose in years. We had one, an old NYC painted dark blue used so part of our wreck crew train. Then one day it was gone. No idea what ever happened to it. But hey! Thanks for the memories. Great as always.
I once lived in Blue Ash and watched many a trains run on the CL&N a shame they cut the Line at Breacon. , brings back memories . Cool Video . Dave in Tn.
@6:38 with the WLW Blaw Knox in the background.
Another great Jaw Tooth video! Love the caboose.
Pretty cool video lucky lucky catch I really like cabooses
That is neat to see a caboose used in action. Old school lol
That caboose was awesome...I saw a CSX train with caboose today...couldn’t believe it...it had a few Feromex cars and then CSX auto cars, definitely not so something you see everyday
Best use of the caboose in places the get stuck
That was so cool seeing that caboose. You don’t hardly see that anymore. Back when I started railroading in 1970 we always had cabooses, and we had 5 man crews on the SP and NWP RR. I ran for the CKR and the KSW in the 90’s and we only had 2 man crews with no caboose. Anyway thanks and I enjoyed the video. 👍👍👍❤️
LIVE ACTION!!!! LOVE IT!!!!
Nice video . And thanks for posting . 🇨🇮
I love these shortline videos
Definitely pretty cool, Brian.
I cannot believe that the conductor did not get out and flag that crossing at Snider Rd, their is no law that says they have to but with the idiot drivers out on the road these days it would have been the safe thing to do.
Cool live action, with a red caboose. Love it!!!
Nice job Brian! I think at one time there were some cars that rolled through one of those crossings on their own.
Yes, I remember that. It was at night. The rail cars collided with an automobile. I think there were injuries. There was video from a camera at the UDF.
Very nice patriot God Bless you good work with the camera keep up the good work
12:04 I like that the conductor does seem to like his job, you can tell in his voice throughout the vid. And his response to "Your head's on a swivel with that...!"
And a nice wave at 14:18. Love this!
Do they still use the old tracks from 1898? Thanks for making this special video! I hope the caboose will still be of great use & service to the new owner. If not... Well, They can always either use it as a party tour caboose OR just simply park it in my backyard! I'll take it Haha! 😍😜😉 Sorry to hear about the public hearing against reinstalling the tracks! But i know it's for good cause. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Jawtooth you just have to much FUN I LOVE IT ! you mention your SON but never see him? Nice Catch 🚂 C&O guy!
thanks for sharing
Great catch sir!
Wow! Amazing video JawTooth! I've never seen a train on this line before because i thought it was abandoned! Glad you caught the line in action!
We still have a caboose that's in some live action in Lafayette, indiana
Running long nose forward and a caboose in action. What a great day.
That is a great catch. Good to see a caboose on that train.
Just noticed at the end, after the actual footage of this story, we do see the caboose with DT & I markings . Cool !!
Great stuff jaw tooth. Regards from the uk 👍🙂
How did Kenny know that was a ex-DT & I caboose ? Great video J.T. keep 'em comin' !!
Great Live Action as always!!
All of your train videos are really nice..I am also a train lover
Nice to see a Caboose on the back there .
Another great video! Thanks. Interesting caboose, not even a road number on it.
That Caboose needs to be with the Red Loco's nice Orange Loco too.
I would have thought that a locomotive with four cars in a caboose would have shining the rails completely but it only shine them a little bit
A most enjoyable video. Thanks as per JT.
That was a great catch. Amazing they had a caboose.
I have never seen a train out there before! Man your lucky!
Andrew Carnegi made a heck of a lot of money out of that steel. Happy Holidays
@Ronald Mitch And I completely agree with that. That's why they were called the Robber Barons"! Life was never fair!
Wow that rail will be 122 years old in 2020
Happy Thanksgiving J.T. ! Well look there...them fellers done left that there caboose abandoned on that there sidin'. I'm gonna have to come up there and hook it to my pickumup and giver a good home....
Nice job on the video...Stay safe.
✌😂😉
C31-P, looking good👍
As a kid, I always thought the caboose was the best part of a train!
I still dont know how you manage to be there just in time !!! Do you have telepathy ?? Yet another Jawtooth special -lots of timber on the move ! You are the master of these unusual live action videos ! Long may hou reign !!
Regards
Awesome upload. like👏👏
Awesome Video Jaw Tooth
🇮🇳👍👍👍🚂🚂🚂🚂
And now its sits in our rail yard in Lebanon. Update: Recently moved to the siding where we store some of our passenger cars.
Commander Omega Tau's Trackside Tuesdays And it’s decorated for the North Pole Express. 👍👍👍
Awesome video!
That’s a very dangerous crossing
You should do a video in Minnesota
You would think that the Rail Road owner would remove that unused spur but that's also a 1/2 mile of storage track they could use (which is why I believe they don't remove it)….
Looks like it's in really good condition for being 121 year old track. A whole lot better than Pioneer's track up on the Napoleon, Defiance & Western.
wish you a nice 1. Advent
Great video
friendly regards Frank
What an awesome catch
That line ends just behind Prasco Park. I believe that this line connected to the line over by Cornell Road in Blue Ash at one point.
Even better
The second time around
Thanks for watching my videos Michael!
super video bro
Great video, Awesome when I see a caboose.
Great catch Brian! I would have been tempted to check the caboose out once the train crew left.
Are you going to do a Christmas special like you did last year?
JT nice video as usual. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving
Good Stuff JT
Awesome video liked so this train will never use a caboose again ?
Good video, always enjoy 😊 viewing them J.T. 😎👍👍👍🛤🚂
Lovely caboose
An "Exempt" crossing that sees one or two trains per week? That seems a little bit busy to be "Exempt"... I was expecting you to say "one or two trains per YEAR" if the crossing's exempt... Sad to read the description about that branch line. There's always the possibility of doing a horn restriction if the train's going through neighborhoods, etc, and you can easily plan bus routes to handle opposite sides of the tracks... And having visited relatives who live 10 ft from the final whistle blast point for the grade crossing in Terra Alta, WV, I can attest to the fact that you get used to the train after a week or two and stop noticing it. :) (Their house used to be a hardware store that would get deliveries directly from the railroad, WAAAAY back in the day). I work at a public shipyard which has tons of old rail embedded in the pavement, and am constantly at odds with all of the other employees who want to see it all torn up because it's a tripping and biking hazard (which it most certainly is, and I've fallen victim to it, myself). I'm of the opposite camp, though, that thinks the ability to move equipment by rail is really cool, and think we should reinstall and reconnect the track that's been ripped out, and return the shipyard to its WWII operating functionality. :) That's about as likely to happen as that spur being reconnected, but it's fun to dream. :)
but the old rail, great and best regards!
Caboose/Cabeese! ...wonder how much a decently reconditioned one costs...
Today i saw a cn 3832 train
Your videos are always great. Question, what are Caboose used for?
