In todays video I'm going to list my top ten thrash metal EP's of all time and I have also polled my discord server for your ten best thrash EP's. EP stands for extended play and it's albums that are shorter than a full-length album but longer than a single, so it's often between three to seven songs long. So expect some Slayer, Destruction, Sodom, Celtic Frost and Kreator to name a few. This video is about the best thrash metal EP's. Enjoy!!

Back when I was in college, I was listening to Surf Nicaragua and my friend, who was a big Pink Floyd guy, said, "Thrash Metal is just punk rockers who know how to play their instruments." Gave me a good laugh since I figured maybe there was a small grain of truth to that.
That's actually a great way to describe the genre.
I had Surf Nicaragua, and I thought that aside from the production values (which made it sound kind of metallic in a literal sense), it really could have been a hardcore punk song.

I didn't see it anywhere on your list and I know it's more modern metal than most on your list but Havok's Point of No Return is a strong effort and they're very thrashy for a newer school band.

This may sound crazy but I consider Bestial Devastation a death metal EP . You know why? The feel of the drums and the vocals. Good choice on Haunting The Chapel.
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 Not crazy at all, Bestial Devastation is still rooted in thrash but may be the first death metal record, even more than Possessed. The voice, the way of playing and the overall sound make definitely this thrash metal enter another dimension.
Slayer is always number 1 in my book

chemical warfare is the first slayer song I listened, many years ago, it really got me into thrash and extreme metal

Haunting the Chapel is probably the best Slayer release imo. If it was a full album, it'd be the best Thrash album.
Chemical Warfare is almost a Death Metal song
it's definitely ahead of it's time.

In my opinion Destruction's Mad Butcher is the best EP ever; it's got everything: a Re-recorded track, a new song, an instrumental and a cover. The pure essence of an EP right there!

Wonderful listening through these selected EP excerpts and nice to discover more honorable titles mentioned afterwards (among which, one of my favourites, 'Freaks' by Rigor Mortis).
However, would like to contribute two other thrash metal EPs, from bands I've always loved, that I wasn't able to spot in the video:

when i was 16 back in 88 there are 3 EP's i remember me and all my friends were always playing and that was "Surf Nicaragua" which is on your list, as well as "Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare" and "Powermad - the madness begins" which were the best things both of those bands ever did. im pushing 50 now and so far out of the loop. back then we just sort of called it all Thrash Metal, but now i will have people argue with me about everything "thats not thrash thats power metal, no its speed metal, no its crossover" so if i named the wrong bands for the genre im sorry, but i dont know what the hell is going on with all these nitpicking micro genres bullshit these days.
Eternal Nightmare was an LP, Vio-lences EP was called Torture Tactics 🤘

Celtic Frost's "Nocturnal Fear" could easily be classified hardcore punk except for the vocals and the guitar solo (which are definitely more metal). Which just further confirms my long held belief that thrash metal is simply the perfect blend of the best elements of heavy metal and the best elements of hardcore punk.

Man, Schmier's vocals sounded totally different in those days! "Flag of Hate" is one of my favorite Kreator releases, for sure, and that hellish Celtic Frost guitar sound still remains one of the greatest ever recorded. I totally agree with your choice of #1, because Slayer's guitar sound was right up there with Celtic Frost in terms of chunk and crunch and darkness. Some excellent choices here, sir!

Hell yeah!!! Great top ten, brother! Haunting the chapel had to be #1, there's simply no way around it. I was glad to see Sacred Reich on the list as well, Surf Nicaragua is a thrash metal classic. I remember hearing it for the 1st time in a friend's car before a show and we kept letting the tape deck just reverse the cassette to play the entire E.P. all over again, it was that good. Amazing guitar work and phenomenal drumming on that one to say the least. I, of course, went out and secured my own copy a.s.a.p. after hearing that thrash metal masterpiece. 🤘🏻☠️🤘🏻

this is a great list, however you guys may call me crazy, but one truly totally underrated Thrash EP that should be on this list is "English Dogs - Metalmorphisis" they had more influence than you know, and the album that followed next, Where Legend Began, is one of the best concept metal albums of all time.

I rarely listen to demos, I prefer albums since they are properly recorded, it would just be an impossible task.
Sentence of Death , Emperor's Return & Morbid Tales are some of my all-time favorites.

Now, there's a quite encompassing sample of mid 80s Metal ep's; i happen to have 8/10 - i never heard of Have Mercy and that Flag of Hate has always escaped from all my vinyl hunting, these last 3 decades and a half. So what do i suggest as personal choice to replace those two ... the Overkill ep (''have not'') and another one i got as it came out, the great ''The Plague'' by Danny Lilker's Nuclear Assault. But we could speak of an almost endless honorable mention list.

@@johnbush5347 I own a Noise Records vinyl European copy of Morbid Tales, has 6 tracks. I believe the US (Metal Blade) vinyl version added 2 extra tracks from Emperor's Return. The cd copy you have may be a later re-release w Emperor's Return (and Hellhammer ep?)tracks added. I have that CD too!
One thing I'd add to this list is the first release by Prong - the Primitive Origins EP from 1987. Back then Prong were a crossover thrash band, and stood out from a lot of similar bands with their strong songwriting ability. Their first full-length album, Force Fed (1989) is a truly underrated crossover thrash classic. Beg to Differ (1990) is also a solid thrash metal album, though they'd go in a different direction by 1991.

Since you mentioned the Sepultura release being on a split originally, I'd be interested in a best splits of all time list as well.

I remember having very high expectations when buying the Flag of Hate-EP, after Pleasure to Kill.
And also the major disappointment when listening to it the 1st time.
Until I realized the speed was still on 33, instead of 45 (because it's an EP of course). 🤔
Hence, retroactively all expectations where fulfilled, including liking the EP version of (the song) Flage of Hate more than the original album version. 😉👍
(It probably was a good move after all, for Pleasure to Kill still being one of my absolute favorite thrash albums, so there was a change of being a little bit disappointed.)

You're not wrong about the production being 'muddy' on Emporers Return. You can barely make out Tom's vocals sometimes - and it's no better on the original vinyl (which I have). I also think Flag of Hate should be up a little higher (even though it was only 3 tracks). And I seriously thought Morbid Tales would be #1- it's almost an album, and no track is poor (well, maybe Danse Macabre isn't the best Frost track in the world). I respect Haunting the Chapel though.
