Hi Squatchs. I seem to remember my Dad showing me decades ago how different threads were used here back then on each end of head studs. Coarser ones where they went into the cast iron of course, finer for the nuts. I think they were Whitworth and BSF respectively. Both used a 55° thread form unlike the UNC and UNF series. One effect was that when undoing the nuts the studs tended to stay in place.BobUK
Looking forward to the wiring . I love doing wiring back in the day. I have wired race cars from scratch. Calculating current draw from each device, and use proper wiring and fuse value. I was very meticulous I'm dressing the wiring and how the wire ran. if you're wearing looks anything like what you've done to the Tractor it will be excellent 👍👍
I love that look on your face when you go around the other equipment showing off the generators. My child has that look occasionally. You two are a great team. The proof is in that even if you disagree on somethings you still work together to achieve a good goal. Our top leaders and maybe half the nation could learn from you two.
Tractor is looking great! Hope you start it up the first time on video. I want to hear it purring! The only people who don't make mistakes are the ones who don't do anything! You should have that alternator twitch looked at by an auto parts store tech! Lol!
If you don't like the appearance of the alternator. You can get one built in a generator housing. Relatively easily lots or antique cars are so equipped.
Thomas LeMay Hi, yup, alternators put out more current at lower revs so Senior is right (again!) - for this application they are a better bet. Anyway, Toby happily messed with the original fly screen so why is he rolling his eyes? BobUK.
Outstanding work on this project! Definitely makes me motivated to tear into and start the rebuild on my super c this winter. She will be staying 6 volt though. Alternators in place of generators makes my eye twitch too! Lol
I share your aversion to alternators. At antique tractor shows I peek under every hood, if the Farmall has an alternator I give it a C-minus, if it has a non-standard generator I give it a B-minus, if it has the original three-brush generator I know that everything in the universe is as it should be and I give her an A-plus.
Ha! That comment by Squatch, "I can't make it stop!" made me bust out laughing. 🤣 It sounds like Pop doesn't care if his eye twitches about the nylock nut.
SENIOR, I REALLY LIKE YOUR fender/ADJUSTER WASHER Mounting piece.! If this does not work, Boesch makes a, I hear a dependable, smaller diameter alternator...
Fantastic fun visit! I was rolling "if every pork chop we're perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs". I was eating crescent dogs for dinner while watching this video LOL! So much fun, thank you.
Oh what fun it could be to cut a hunk out of an old hood..(like I've seen cut out on some farmall alternator conversions) ...paint it shiny red and just leave it on the floor next to the tractor when he's not lookin! Be more than an eye twitchin! Lol... Seriously guys...you keep fixing your stuff like this and you're gonna have to get a whole new fleet of used runners you don't mind scratching! Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing
Alternators vs. Generators... I kept my Generator on my Cub when I rebuilt it. Bought a Solar battery charger, which act's like a battery maintainer... I have a positive and negative 12 Gauge lead coming out of the battery box, which it plugs into. I set the panel on the foot board or hood, for about an hour. Even after a year tractor starts right up! Solar battery charger panels cost about 15.00 online. The other thing I did, is for lights, I went to Napa and spent some time in the parts books... and came away with a 12V lamp that fit right into the IH Light housing. I think the lamp was for an old willies style jeep? anyways... your work is awesome. Enjoying watching the progress.
You're like me. Nothing wrong with a generator. At least Senior is getting the alternator under the hood. Nothing bugs me more than a Farmall with a hole in the hood and an alternator hanging out the side.
As I was tearing down my newly acquired Ford 8N I could not believe all the mismatched hardware on this tractor. Mainly the bolts that hold the fenders on and the bots and nuts for the front axle adjustable beams together. I guess what ever they had available. I have never seen so many makeshift spacers to be able to use bolts too long for the job. Luckily there are a ton of period correct parts for the Ford 8N not that it matters...but, it matters!
@@squatch253 I know you commented on this very subject in one of your videos. I was trying to find the video but couldn't so I landed on this Super M video and left my comment.
would be nice if they would come out with a direct replacement alternator that would mount up directly in place of an alternator using the existing brackets
I converted my 45 Farmall A to 12 volt but I used the original 6 volt generator housing. Swapped out all the 6 volt internals for 12 volt ones. If you don't look at the battery you can not even tell. It will peg the 30 amp gauge if you adjust the light switch more than needed. It's got a mag so not much charging is needed.

Question and not a criticism. why such a big alternator? surely a smaller alternator like you would find on a wee kubota or bobcat would run the couple of lights and charge the battery on that tractor , its not like you need 130A for your bumpin' sound system.
