You are correct about that clutch being a weak link, my cousin had one on his father's early super M , HE WAS GOING UP HILL WITH HEAVY LOAD Of GREEN CORN AND IT LET GO, he went down backwards, he bailed, he survived but banged up pretty good

@Farmall Fanatic In the 70s there were a lot of older farmers in our area who (even though they had newer nicer tractors) continued using their M or Super M more than the others. Last time I volunteered to rake hay for a guy was with his raggedy old M. That was a great day since I was deployed to the middle east a few weeks later.

Yes I've used an m & w hand clutch. I purchased a Farmall m about 25 years that had an m&w hand clutch. I had never seen one before. And you have to realize this is way before I knew anything at all about the internet. I just this year sold that tractor with the hand clutch because I don't use it and all it does is sit. But I really enjoy your channel for the simple fact that you are a common man.

I noticed the hand clutch a few years ago but didn't say anything because the handle wasn't there. I figured it didn't work anymore, and you didn't ever bring it up in one of your videos. So I figured you weren't happy about it,and didn't want to talk about it. Sometimes something like that can be a soar subject for some tractor owners. I was hoping you would do a video on it.
I knew two people who had the hand clutch and it didn't work anymore or it slipped. They said the same thing "can't find parts anymore".
I love the sound of your M !! It sounds like it has the M and W rebuilt kit in it also. 👍

My Dad rebuilt one for a neighbor in the late 70's and he had a hard time getting the parts for the hand clutch and it was expensive. I've got a couple tractors with the m&w clutch. A couple parts tractors with it. I've got a completely restored 1950 with a working hand clutch. You are supposed to use the clutch to only disengage. You push the regular clutch in and re engage the hand clutch and release the foot clutch. It's handy to have. I would just jump on a 400 or 450 if i really needed a live pto . If your M is overheating you may need the plate that runs down the side of the block and diverts coolant around the cylinders. Had an m that would run warm and changed the thermostat, radiator cleaned, water pump, etc. The plate had worn smooth and wasn't pushing coolant around the cylinders. Changed it and boom it!! ran cool.

I was looking for a project and saw this m advertised on an auction. It was sold as a non-runner. An old Farmall mechanic told me you might as well buy an old runner because there's no going halfway when it comes to tearing them down and replacing seals and gaskets. It had a 12-volt with alternator, The Cornhusker 3 point hitch, M&W throttle kit and a M & W live PTO which I had never seen before. A guy in New York state made a copy of his manual and sent me and I found all the clutch plates from a guy in Columbus Nebraska and the new thrust bearing in Carroll Iowa. I spent 10 years collecting more parts and three years ago completely tore it down front to back with the correct wide front end, power steering, M&W governor, and 9-speed transmission. I plow with a little genius 314 and if it's dry and hard with a little genius 216, cultivate, plant corn, potatoes, spray and mow. Plus a handful of tractor rides and a couple of plow days. Even my wife is happy!

Ok ive never payed attention to this m that much but now i realize about that hand clutch its more that any normal m. We also have a 1941 m with not just one but 2 interesting things. Ours has a m&w hand clutch and heistler 9 speed transmission. The heistler is jankety in some gears so we dont drive it much. Ive drove it once but it was the first farmall tractor i worked on getting running. Bc of its wackyness we just dont drive it much bc some gears arent the best, it does over heat but again it hasn't been restored but its a runner and a good driver for our few mile drives we take it on once or twice a year. The hand clutch works good though and it was from what dad told me grandpas hay tractor until they got the smta. I drove the m for the first time a little bit ago it was fun. This spring in order to get our camper out i pulled the m using our other smta 61680. Probably the most fun ive had on a farmall in 3rd gear just so dad could pull start the 41.
Update: Another thing I forgot to add to the 41m it has a thing on the clutch which uses leverage so it's easier to push in the clutch petal. That was after starting all 4 of are farmalls today I remembered it.

Dad never had an M&W hand clutch on any of his Farmalls, 4-5 M's, 2 H's, 3 Super M's, SM-TA, Super H and a 450. But friends who did have them said it was hard to keep them adjusted so the could pull heavy drawbar loads. Dad's comment was the M&W hand clutch was the quickest way to turn an M into a 2-bottom tractor.
Your M running warm, even hot pulling a 14 ft IH #370 disk in plowed ground, in 4th gear? I'd think 3rd would be fast enough. Dad had a 14 ft Krause disk he pulled with the SM-TA, bought M&W direct axle duals so he could pull it, 3rd gear was all the faster the SM-TA could handle. I disked some with that disk, with the Deere R diesel, it only had 5 forward speeds, 5th was a 11 mph road gear, I pulled the disk in 3rd. Disking corn stalks. Dad traded disks the following spring, got a 12 ft 4 inch Kewanee disk. I pulled it some in 4th gear with the 450 gas Dad traded the SM-TA for. I really wish he'd kept that SM-TA.
I'd recommend looking for dual rear wheels for your M if you pull that 14 ft disk much. Your rear wheel slippage has to be crazy high. Wastes a lot of gas. A 756 diesel or 806 diesel would be a great tractor to hook on that disk.

Dad had both an H and am M when I was growing up. I put quite a few hours on the M mostly pulling a disc. Fourth gear with a disc that big? Even with flat ground and sandy soil I have a hard time believing that. We had soil with quite a few rocks and clay.plus some hillside. Second gear most of the time. For some reason that tractor liked to pop out of third gear. That M was a hard steering beast. One of the biggest mistakes that Dad made was trading the M off for a B414 diesel. That thing was not made for our kind of farming at all. Besides, it was bought as a basket case project tractor. It was our third project tractor and Dad never get some of the bugs out.

Excellent video Gino :) also I know when childhood days from 1983 to 1997 on home farm my late dad & his brother my uncle for Handmill they do light work make chop feed with 1950 Cockshutt 40 gas fuel tractor only had 550 RPM PTO and for when need 1000 RPM PTO put 1968 International 624 A Desiel on plus get recharge battery up full too! But Cockshutt was running okay use 1963 McCormick International B414 Loader tractor Desiel fuel tractor had 550 RPM PTO ! Then for 1984 to 1996 on Handmill the 1968 624 because 550 and 1000 PTO speeds when got in 1989 the International 724 B loader Desiel fuel use swap both one week each tractor doing chop feed both had 550 & 1000 RPM PTO speeds plus recharge battery to and get ready to oil change plus fuel filters or hydraulics fluid plus transmission! My dad say at Breakfast time get the 624 or 724 fire up in 8:00am for day work chop feed on Saturday and Sunday Lol ! Yes Gino teach me new things on Farmall did not know about plus something help you with too but hand Clutch didn't know M though say you changed front end of Row crop to wide end type ? I wondered when you would get around to telling the story on that M&W. Can't blame ya for doing what you did to make the tractor work. I might have done the same. Or, maybe I would pull the parts and sell em off, IF I had access to a donor tractor with all of the original M parts. (to fully delete the hand clutch) But heck, it runs as-is. I never saw that on that tractor before. Just never saw a good shot of it. It's really unfortunate that I didn't know about this before. A friend of mine had a parts W-6 with a M&W live PTO. He passed away and it went to scrap. I might have been able to get you parts for that for cheap if I would have known you were looking for parts a few months ago. It was no use to us as we never had a tractor with that attachment.
