    However, new research shows that Sodium batteries will swiftly replace lithium batteries in the future. Lithium batteries have a range of disadvantages, most of which can easily be mitigated by using sodium-ion batteries.
    And even though sodium-ion batteries still have a long way to go before they can fully be commercialized, the benefits already outweigh the disadvantages posed by lithium-ion batteries economically and environmentally.

    I think Aluminium, Sodium and Sulphur chemistry seems to have produced a winner. But in any case I do not think Lithium is truly safe enough. Plenty of fires being caused by consumer lithium batteries. I'd be happier with a larger battery to eliminate the risks.

    If sodium batteries don't last for as many cycles, but are much cheaper, then maybe they also need to be easily replaceable, or even swapable, so maybe those EV companies touting swapable batteries are onto something?

      This video must be based on old data: Natron claims >50k cycles endurance for its 1.2kWh Blue Pack energy storage Na-ion batteries. The energy density is horrible at only 16Wh/kg, though this is likely due to how thick current-collecting electrodes need to be for the 26Ah cells to accommodate its 800A charge/discharge current rating. If they made a 200A-rated version, they could probably bump density to 70-100Wh/kg.

    It's shocking this video didn't mention that Australia produces over 1/2 the world's lithium.
    It's also shocking that the narrator didn't mention that cobalt isn't used in over half the world's EVs, such as those in Chinese made Tesla's & BYDs.

      Pretty sure there is cobalt and tantalum in the low voltage electronics

    We'll see, with Toyota's hydrogen cars on the horizon - but will those be good in sub-zero temperatures???
    There's a place for both, depending on how people use their cars - sodium-Ion for city runs, hydrogen for long hauls perhaps 🤔🤔

    I wish you had addressed the risk of fire with Li-Ion Batteries. Once an EV with Li-Ion batteries, it's a massive problem. Na-Ion (Sodium-Ion) batteries do not appear to have this issue. From a safety standpoint, Na-Ion is the better technology.

      True, but the reality is that lithium ion battery fires are ten to thirty times less common than ICE vehicle fires. Any fire is bad news, but let's not overstate the problem.

    If lithium recycling is handled so poorly, should we expect sodium to be recycled any more effectively? Indeed, since sodium is so cheap, isn't it likely to be recycled even less? And while the economic impact of wasting sodium may not be that bad, the environmental footprint could be a real problem. Right?
    Long term, recycling will need to improve a lot, whatever the metal is.

    Battery is not only about EVs.
    There is a multiple times larger, Stationary energy storage requirement. (Grid scale storage ).
    There Li-ion doesn't make any sense, as battery weight or volume is not the concern.
    Na is already better option for that.
    I still don't get it why people use Li-ion battery in home if they install solar panel.

    Sodium or lithium batteries... Both are totally inefficient, energy-wise. One liter of gas contains 200 times the energy of 1 kg of batteries.
    I'll stick to ICE cars for the next 2 decades. Until they find a true revolutionary battery, build dozens of needed powerplants, add millions of charging stations and increase the autonomy to an acceptable level. No need to say, it won't happen soon.

      I have a 2003 hyunday gets with no rust that i drive in the winter. And a 2003 BMW 330i conv in the summer. Both have aboute 200 000 km / 125 000 miles and i take care of them and buy new stuf if something is wrong. I know what new parts for new car cost. It is cracy! A tail lamp to a vw +1000 dollar? And there is no to be found at scrap yards. I changed the rear shocks on the bmw this summer. It takes 30-40 min to change both of them, so i just bougt some cheaper ones when they are so easy to change. 2033 i dont have to pay road tax for them. Sweden.

      Where the F' did you get that figure of 200 times more energy in oil than Lithium batteries? also did you know ICE's are less than 20% efficient, over 80% is wasted as heat and friction, steam engines aren't much worse than that. You are as much of a fossil as your fuel.

    Sodium batteries are already available - been available for decades. You just go to the local supermarket to buy them. Lithium batteries have high density and last longer. That has always been the case. Lithium batteries was developed to do something Sodium batteries couldn't do. If Sodium could do what Lithium could do, they would have sold them decades ago to fit into watches and laptops, and later cars.

      EVs are nothing like small consumer electronics that just plug in AA/AAA batteries and be ready to use. The battery integration changes involves systematic changes on the vehicle hardware/software designs as well as infrastructures. Sodium battery does have much less energy density than lithium-ion which means less milage/single charge on the vehicle, which also means they need to build more charging stations. It is risky for EV manufacturer to implement this type of batteries right now since there ant many charging stations yet.

      in my understanding, solid state is mainly research into reducing the growth of dendrites and consequently the chance of thermal runaway in lithium batteries

      whichever chemistry forms a safe, cheap enough (not necessarily cheapest) and accessible sourcing will win out.

    There is NOT a shortage of Lithium in the world. Where do you get that from ? Lithium car batteries are recycled as proved by VW group in Germany. Again you are wrong.

    It doesn't matter a lick whether LiFePO4 is better or not, there isn't enough component materials to support the widespread implementation of storage enough to supplant petroleum energy. Perhaps Sodium or another of the non-lithium contenders is enough but, until they are proven to be reliable, safe and cheaply produced, petroleum is still the answer for energy.

      Lithium is everywhere. Refinement is the bottleneck, and they just figured out how to pump and direct extract it, instead of pumping and letting water evaporate in a series of pools that takes months and months
